Small Basic is a project that's aimed at bringing "fun" back to programming. By providing a small and easy to learn programming language in a friendly and inviting development environment, Small Basic makes programming a breeze. Ideal for kids and adults alike, Small Basic helps beginners take the first step into the wonderful world of programming. - Leo Laporte
maybe a good idea - Thierry R. Andriamirado
what the hell, no, we really don't need YET ANOTHER microsoftian way of learning to think the way microsoft does. ruby and python are two languages that actually try to do something interesting and are readable by nonprogrammers. - Michael J. Cohen (mjc)
*sigh* here's a prediction.. in 5 years we'll alll be "fixing" applications written by non-programmers in this language - Sean Reiser
Cute! - Rochelle
I'll take a look into it. I'm open for all, if it brings back that "weekend programming" feeling from the C64/Amiga. @Michael J. Cohen: Yes Python is nice. I use it, too. BUT the GUI is awful. And way, way too complicated to just write a little tool very quick. And there is no GUI (integrated). So not suitable for non-geeks. And I'm one :) - Ryo
@Michael my first reaction was the same as yours.. but after all, why not? guys can begin programming with such a 'nasty' programming language, and quickly evolve to 'better' ones which are supported by better (=Free) communities - Thierry R. Andriamirado

Indeed, XMPP is built to federate, so multiple identi.ca's, or for that matter, any clone speaking xmpp and supporting the twitter protocols, can be used to create a scaleable 'ring of servers' each with multiple clients. When the million people folowing scoble nee to be notified, only one message each would nead to go to the multiple servers in this ring, which then need to figure to send it to a fraction of the million users. So scaling is still important, but less so. - Rahul Dave
Ah... that makes sense to me... hopefully they do it this way... - Mike Wills

“identi.ca gets a Replies tab and becomes a billion percent less shitty”
July 7 at 1:58 am - Link
Totally agree. - Robert Scoble
Friend import next please and then it might be useful - sam sethi via Alert Thingy
sam, I think the point is that if Twitter et al implement Open Microblogging, importing won't be necessary - klecu
It needs some "recommended friends" to avoid looking really lame to newbies. - Robert Scoble
Robert, you just want to get recommended there too. Come on, admit it. - klecu
klecu: nice try, but I've been talking about this before I was on recommended systems here: http://thenextweb.org/2008/04/... - Robert Scoble
I'm still trying to figure out a reason to use identi.ca. Playing around with it. We'll see. - Dennis Jackson
I don't understand why it was launched WITHOUT a Replies tab in the first place... - Mark Douglass
I agree with Dennis Jackson, minus the "playing around with it" part. - ChaCha Fance
Yes, it lacks some basic features, especially if people are looking at it who are coming from twitter. Not having replies really annoys me, enough not to use it. - jjprojects
GOOD, that is an essential feature... neat to see it growing so quickly - not only with users, but also features - Susan Beebe
big feature - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Yep - looks like identi.ca has been built correctly so far too. It *appears* to be scaleing up nicely after a few slow days early on. - Jonathan Beckett
@critics: Identi.ca is worth supporting, because it is open source. The very reason means that it has the potential of attracting third-party developers that create plug-ins, improve the platform or simply host their own Identi.ca-installations. That's a huge thing. Think about Firefox: It is based on Mozilla/Netscape's code, which was created. AOL didn't do anything with it, but others came and created Firefox (and Flock, Sunbird, Songbird, etc.) because it is open. That's Identi.ca's biggest feature. - sebmos
Next step must be API. - Sergey Petrenko
sebmos: I'm still learning about Identi.ca. Your comment kind of pushed me back on the site to research it a bit. I can see this going somewhere. :) - Dennis Jackson
Replies tab on Indenti.ca is big. I'd also like to be able to export my subscription lists. Edit/delete would be nice too. - Jeff Evans
Nice to see this feature already. I was talking to the dev yesterday and was asking if I can jump in and provide a solution for it. Cool to see that the guy already did it himself :-). - Alex Popescu via feedalizr
Mark Douglass - Twitter launched without a replies function as well, you know. And it took a lot longer than a few days for it to arrive. - Earle Martin
So if we wildly extrapolate identi.ca's usability increase, it could potentially surpass Twitter in 3 months and Friendfeed in 6. The question then is: will users migrate and become critical mass on the new service? By now we know that critical mass is more important than QoS, as evidenced by the bird and the whale. - micronauta
http://identi.ca/your_nickname... --- for output of your identi.ca subscriptions -- thanks evan - Jeff Evans
this is so effing awesome! - Sarah Perez
(s_dance) - Hao Chen
identi.ca is irrelevant. It's a step backwards from FriendFeed. - Thomas Hawk
Whoa, that must of been some seriously shitty software before now, but still shitty I see? - Andrew Baron
This still is not the distributed version you wanted Dave. And I -with all the respect I owe to its makers- don't think that it will success if all the twitter crowd come in. I hope I'm wrong - directeur via NoiseRiver
I think Replies is a setup in the right direction. In fact. it might be the main step. Awesome. - Andrew Ruess via twhirl
For me, it's still just idont.ca.re - Alan Le
Agree with Alan Le. identi.ca doesn't seem like much of an upgrade. It's a distraction from a better solution - getting everyone over to FriendFeed. - Jon Galloway
Yep, i'm with Jon there... I really don't see the fuss Identi.ca . Why are we getting excited over replies...ridiculous. - Zee from WeDoCreative
These products are all so new. There's plenty or room for experimentation. - Harry Myhre
Thanks, Dave! And thanks to everyone who had comments and critiques. I know that people have a choice in which service to use. I'd like to make sure that a) the software has features equal or better to other µblog sites b) the architecture is truly scalable -- from small commodity web hosting to >1M user megaservices. - Evan Prodromou

Comet Between Fireworks and Lightning

This will be a photograph in the top 10 of many future lists. - Andrew Baron
Explanation: "In January 2007, people from Perth, Australia gathered on a local beach to watch a sky light up with delights near and far. Nearby, fireworks exploded as part of Australia Day celebrations. On the far right, lightning from a thunderstorm flashed in the distance. Near the image center, though, seen through clouds, was the most unusual sight of all: Comet McNaught. The photogenic comet was so bright that it even remained visible though the din of Earthly flashes. Comet McNaught has now returned to the outer Solar System and is now only visible with a large telescope. The above image is actually a three photograph panorama digitally processed to reduce red reflections from the exploding firework." - Andrew Baron

I'm enamored with that lightning. - Jason Toney
ahhh good one - Dobromir Hadzhiev
I'm going to side with Brian here. What is right: Comet McNaught was that bright in WA (I use to live there), but I checked my attempted pics, they predate this by over a week. I'm sure the comet was only that bright for less than a week. Second, the main Australia Day fireworks occur in Perth City...which isn't near a beach . Maybe it's Leighton Beach with Fremantle to the left...but it doesn't seem right. I did check the weather records though, there was a storm that night, and it's in the right direction - Duncan Riley
I do hope it is real though...and I forgot how wonderful the environment there is - Duncan Riley
Now the wallpaper on my iMac - Adam Helweh
Duncan, last year both Fremantle and I believe Hillarys held their own fireworks for Australia Day. I myself was trying to guess the location this morning. Being a regular on Leighton beach though it doesn't look familiar so I was thinking it may have been taken to the north of Hillarys. It also made me very nostalgic for Perth :) - Penny

These kids today with their blargs! Off my lawn, ya darn kids! - Leon
Bjorn - so? in this day and age where anything a candidate says can be used against them or taken out of context, they need to watch what they say. - Veronica
One short clip taken out of context. Good fuel for the haters in the world. - William Beem
I don't hate McCain, actually. There are worse options out there than McCain. But saying you hate an extremely vocal community isn't good campaigning. - Veronica
Veronica, true, but still I think it's an important thing for us to look at things critically and not be mislead by headlines that don't tell the whole story - ♜ Bjorn Tipling
Why would he, even jokingly, say he "hates the bloggers" if he didn't in some way believe that to be true? It's like an offhand comment, like he thinks no one would even care enough to be bothered by it. So flippant. - Veronica
@Veronica It's impossible to "watch what you say". Everything and anything can be taken out of context to be used against you. - Shey
"I hate such and such" is not a statement that can be taken out of context, imho. - Veronica
It's a short clip designed to highlight ONE comment. What was the context for the conversation? It doesn't matter to the people who are trying to find ways to hate on a man. My guess it's people who do stuff like that who were the topic of his conversation. - William Beem
It was definitely a joke, but bloggers are very easily irritated, so maybe it wasn't the best move. I don't think it will hurt him too bad though. - Harrison Hoffman
We're ornery like that. - Veronica
Just being a devils advocate here, but what if I was recorded saying "I am about to say something I don't mean: 'I hate such and such" and the only thing you saw was the last part of the statement. Don't get me wrong, I am going to vote for Obama, but it seems like he said something trying to be funny that was meant to be taken lighthearted. No reason to see everything the guy says as pure evil. - ♜ Bjorn Tipling
@Veronica ??? What? It doesn't matter what he said. They took it out of the original context. Even then it was obvious he was making a joke. - Shey
the head of the library association said this like 2 years ago and it did not go well for him. - Stefan Hayden
ty shey - it was a joke people - I realize that given his previous regrettable statements about his tech illiteracy that this is the worst joke he could have made in the eyes of this community but for goodness sakes. Between rising energy costs, our economy, the war, Iran, N Korea - we have PLENTY of things that need serious debate right now - do we really need to take a joke and accuse McCain (as I saw on another thread) of jking this way bcause he is agnst the rights of indviuals to freely exprss thmslvs? - Marco (aureliusmaximus)
Stefan, I remember that and I haven't renewed my ALA membership since (I have a library science degree). - ♜ Bjorn Tipling
[Posted this in the parallel conversation over on Scoble's link to the same story. Sigh. I hate FriendFeed] Just dug up this from his Liberty University commencement address back in 2006. Summary: He really does hate bloggers ;-) http://kshep.posterous.com/mcc... - Ken Sheppardson
Well, do you expect anything less from John McCain? Does he know what a blog or blogger is? I mean, he doesn't use a computer much (but then again neither does Richard Branson - so maybe we should not hold that against McCain).... hmm ... But then ... Richard Branson isn't running for US President.... it's OK if he doesn't use a computer - he prob doesn't need to ... but McCain ... he doesn't need a computer either .. but he does need to understand people who do - because a lot of people do. - Marshall Sponder
I'm not particularly fond of McCain, but it sounds like he was just making a joke. He did the melodramatic, exasperated sign when he said it. I'm sure there's some grain of truth to it, but people are acting he's brought out legislation to ban blogging or something. Blogging is protected speech. McCain can't do anything about that. - Jason Huebel
It's a rotten thing to say, but he seemed to connect with those people when he said it. There's a large group of people who are actively shunning new media. Afraid of change, as usual. - David
Has he started up an enemies list yet? - Harry Myhre
He probably thinks bloggers are people from Holland who wear wodden shoes. - Harry Myhre
McCain hates bloggers and Obama hates America. It's lose-lose. - Jim the Tolerable
I had forgotten - Paul Newman was on Nixon's enemies list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N... - Harry Myhre
Does John McCain even know what a blogger is or does? - Soso Sazesh
i hate to defend the old man, but doesn't it seem like he was trying to get a laugh? albeit a cheap one. - robert steburg
thats ok, I hate McCain so we're equal - Danilo da Silva via twhirl
I imagine the majority of the population saying "bloggers, is that some new kind of terrorist?" so I don't think it will hurt him much. That, and from my informal online research, most bloggers hated the GOP nominee before McCain's name filled in the blank. - Robert Hafer
He was looking for a laugh since he was acknowledging that bloggers are usually good at holding people's feet to the fire... I mean seriously people? - Matthew Beck
