"Just to play Devil's Advocate: Isn't the real problem our over-consumption of, well, everything? Those large ships are only there because we, as consumers, are demanding them. I'm not giving government/corps a free pass but we, as individuals, must accept part of the blame and act accordingly. I think there is an implicit assumption that we can just go on living the same way and somehow expect government to save us."

"> According to "proper" traditions, there are very few reasons for raping a prisoner: lodging information against other inmates to authorities, theft of other prisoners' property, failure to pay debt in time. Did you happen to miss that? Granted, I don't know much about prison rape culture in the US but it seems like the rape in Russian prisons is punishment, not just your average part of prison life."

"I have been trying to use Midori more frequently but it has gotten really slow on both computers I use it on. One is an old computer so I expect it to not be as snappy as I want but it feels even slower than Firefox. However, on my Core2Duo with 2GB, it should not have noticeable lag but it does (e.g. there is nearly a second delay when clicking to change tabs). Sadly, chromium hasn't made it past the testing repository in Arch and many of the AUR chromium builds don't work on my older CPU. So for now I'm stuck with Firefox."

"I'm sure this sort of thing is fairly common but the news has a propensity for ONLY reporting on negative stories like this. These tragic stories are the type that sell so don't expect to see a lot of reporting on normal kids getting on with their rather uninteresting lives. Twitter is full of average people saying/doing uninteresting things and people continually mock it because of that."

"Interesting. I guess the problem with using terms such as "sustainable" is that they are not regulated and can thus be manipulated to mean whatever you want. For example, I found [this article](http://www.localforage.com/local_f...) explaining some possible differences between organic and sustainable but the general gist is that you don't really know unless you interrogate the farmer."

"Actually, I've seen the label "sustainable" applied to some produce at my local food co-op and it is used to mean that it is produced using organic practices but isn't organically certified. This usually happens when a producer is switching over to organic but must wait a few years before actually gaining the USDA organic certification. I'm actually interested to know what your view of "sustainable" vs "organic" is though."

"While I think that organic meat is a giant crock of shit, organic foods are not necessarily a marketing gimmick. Sure, you probably aren't hurt yourself by eating conventional produce but think of the difference of the people who live next to conventional farms. They are exposed to pesticides and other disgusting things that almost definitely impact their quality of life. The bigger marketing problem is so called "natural" food products. They are exactly the same as conventional products but have a marked up price and fancy marketing to make it seem like you are doing something nice for the environment. Sadly, most large companies who are buying up smaller organic-oriented companies are introducing more "natural" products while reducing or even eliminating organic products. People who are used to some organic brands end up getting duped into paying more money and these companies get to spread nonsense about being "green.""

Next thing you know, Microsoft releases Bing, the first cherry-inspired search... err... decision engine. I'm not saying Microsoft stole my idea or anything but just look at the name: Bing.
