"After a series of complications and setbacks, the Large Hadron Collider sees its first particle-particle collisions after a weekend of furious activity. While these weren't at any significant energy, the milestone marks an important step in getting the mammoth machine up and running and filling in the last space on the particle bingo card."

"Talk about embarrassing. Steve Ballmer guest hosted on NBC's Today Show yesterday to talk about the Windows 7 launch. Sadly for Steverino, Matt Lauer talked a lot about Apple and the iPhone. Even worse, sharp eyes noticed an NBC-produced graphic in the background with a Windows 7 logo appearing on the screen of what clearly is a Mac laptop."

am I odd for thinking this isn't embarassing? They could spin it as "look, we can even turn your mac into a useful PC" or something. Why should they care what badge is on the machine as long as someone has spent their cash on a license for their OS? </devils advocate>

the more I see pics of Mr Chair Chucker, the more I think he'd be perfect for a guest spot on WWE Smackdown!
- alphaxion
alphaxion, I agree 100%, they need to embrace that and run with it. How many people using a Mac don't have a copy of windows running in a VM at the very least.
- Joshua Schnell
I should offer to run the MS marketing department and shake it up. ;)
- alphaxion
I Agree with you all, I am planning on buying Windows 7 for my MBP to run in a VM. I don't really think there is a war between Apple and Microsoft. They both need each other.

My school requires me to run Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro to takes exams. I know the Bootcamp utility is on my Mac, and I have a copy of XP. Should I try doing this myself? Anything I need to be aware of before trying?
Note: While I'm not a developer, I know my way around my Mac. UNTIL I have to get into partitioning drives and such. I'm not sure how involved this process will be. Would appreciate suggestions!
- Jess
BootCamp makes the whole partitioning process pretty simple. I think if you are comfortably knowledgeable you would be fine doing it yourself.
- Brandon Titus
from iPhone
ElStewie- No. We have to run Examsoft on the specific computer we're using. It's law school and one, they're not technically innovative, two, they're paranoid about cheating. Examsoft will lock down my machine and save every keystroke to their server. They'll only let us run Bootcamp (I tried getting them to let me use Parallels)
- Jess
Brandon - have you heard of any fatal mistakes? Something users have done that destroys their machine? Files they replace causing harm? That's what I'm afraid of!
- Jess
There's not much you can do to screw it up. Bootcamp Assistant takes care of partitioning for you-- non-destructively. Then you install XP and away you go. Be sure to burn the Bootcamp drivers disc so you can install them in XP for full hardware support.
- Jason Huebel
from iPhone
If you have your MBP backed up there's nothing to worry about. You do have a backup, don'tcha, Jess. :)
- Drew
Should be simple. Working in comp forensics for a living I *SHOULD* have known better but instead I rushed through the bootcamp setup deal, didn't partition correctly and wiped out the mac os. It was only a week old so I wasn't too worried, but just make sure you actually read the screen instead of saying "yeah, sure, next" and getting click happy like I did :) past that warning, it's super easy. I am surprised they'd be able to tell if you were running Parallels in full screen however.
- Robert DeBord
In addition to the XP disc that you have you will need a Leopard/Snow Leopard install disc or Install Disc 1 if your MBP came preinstalled with Leopard. Complete instructions here: http://www.apple.com/support...
- Drew
YES! I have two backups to a Maxtor external drive and a Seagate one...I hope this is enough. But wait! I thought I needed to put in the XP disk, then Bootcamp runs? I should run the assistant first, then install XP?
- Jess
Download the pdf from the above link. It will explain all. It's easy as long as you have all the discs. Don't worry at all!
- Drew
It's really easy. Don't be stressed about it at all.
- Aaron Hood
Very simple process. Just open Boot Camp Assistant in Utilities Folder. And follow the procedures. You just need to decide the size of the Windows' partision's hdd size, that's all. The Bootcamp Assistant guides very well.
- Ozkan Altuner
I've installed Bootcamp a couple of times and didn't have any problems. The process is very straightforward. I'd just advise you to: 1. Free as much space on you Mac's HD to make partitioning quicker and easier. 2. Make a backup of ALL of your important data.
- Paul Grav
Print out and follow the installation guide. As long as you don't try to "wing it" you'll be fine.
- Kevin Crader
Boot camp assistant helps with the partition. As always, back up before beginning.
- Jay Colingham
Thank you for the help (and confidence), everyone! After reading these manuals, I think I need to get a new version of Windows. My copy of XP isn't the latest and the manuals suggests this may cause problems. I'm thinking with 7 coming out, I may get a good deal on XP or Vista (I don't plan on running Windows except during the exam, so why wait for the newest).
- Jess
Jess, if you feel up to it or have a geeky friend you should be able to incorporate the latest Service Pack (SP3) onto a disc with your XP install disc - it's called slipstreaming. How to do it is here: http://bit.ly/1bo9h7

"A proposed bill has Internet companies and civil liberty groups in a huff, as it would grant the US President the power to cut off private-sector users from the Internet during cyber security emergencies. The 55-page S. 773 bill (pdf), months in the making behind closed doors, is vague in its wording, but does suggest private Internet networks could be taken over by specially licensed individuals in the government."

And similarly there been complete silence from Apple employees on the ZFS mailing list. I think the last post was sometime in March. Back in December last year, they clearly believed that ZFS would be shipping in Snow Leopard. It would have been nice if Apple were to confirm whether it's killing ZFS or just putting it on hold while it ships Snow Leopard.

According to Doherty, the 6-inch Apple tablet, which we have been hearing about for the past month, will be aimed mainly at watching videos, playing games and reading e-books. The second model will have a larger screen and will be able to run all Mac applications, including audio/video editing and graphic animation, he said."

"Those who bought an iPhone 3GS are much more likely to be very happy than those who bought the Palm Pre, a study by ChangeWave and RBC Capital Markets shows. At 99 percent, nearly all Apple smartphone buyers are satisfied on at least a basic level with what they bought. Of those, an extremely high 82 percent are "very" satisfied. By comparison, 87 percent of all Pre buyers are satisfied, but only 45 percent of those are very satisfied."
