Scoble, Alex Scoble
These people who think that Twitter, blogging, friendfeed, etc. are hard should stay away from blank pieces of paper. Talk about bad UI!
Now going to bed...that's hard...seriously. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Blank pieces of paper aren't intuitive enough. :-| - Matthew Horton
Ansel Adams turned a blank piece of paper into a masterpiece. I find that what he does is hard. So shoot me. - Robert Scoble
Cristo: yes. And he printed that photography on paper, that until it got into his hands, was blank. - Robert Scoble
When you are in Yosemite with a blank piece of paper and a camera that weighs almost as much as you do, there really aren't sufficient affordances for what to do next. - Jason Wehmhoener
They have improved the situation somewhat since Ansel's time with lots of brown signs, roads and parking lots, but it's still a problem. - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: you are absolutely 100% wrong and that's not me talking. It's Ansel Adams' son. He claims most of the art is in the darkroom and he showed me contact prints to prove it. - Robert Scoble
Cristo: watch my interviews with Ansel Adams' son. - Robert Scoble
Cristo: I'm sure there's something. ;-) Here's me sitting in Ansel's sink in his darkroom: http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Robert Scoble
Matthew: do you have a URL to back that up? I've never heard that story about Ansel and I have a few of his best pictures at home to look at (reproductions, I can't afford the real prints he made). - Robert Scoble
Here's Ansel's son showing how he worked his enlarger: http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Robert Scoble
Blank paper can not adequately illustrate bewbs. - Mike Nayyar
Cristo: I won't get in the sink if you don't let me. His son let me in there after removing some wine, if I remember right. His darkroom has been left the way it was back when Ansel used it (Ansel's dodging/burning tool was still there -- that should be in the Smithsonian). - Robert Scoble
Matthew: it sounds like the kind of story that was made up. - Robert Scoble
Mike, you clearly never went to art school. - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: here's Michael's son showing us around some of Ansel's work in his house: http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Robert Scoble
Here's Adams' son showing us around Yosemite. One of the highlights of my life. http://scobleizer.com/2008... And no trees were cut down there. :-) - Robert Scoble
More of a visit to Ansel Adams' home/darkroom: http://frederickvan.com/blog... - Robert Scoble
Glacier Point is an incredibly photogenic spot http://www.flickr.com/photos... http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: wrong. Wrong. Wrong. I can tell you've never worked in a darkroom. There are infinite techniques and outcomes. You can even use different chemicals to turn the same photo brown, for instance. Or flash it with light which creates a wild effect. Or dodge and burn. Or use multiple exposures to add things to the photo that weren't there in the single negative. - Robert Scoble
In Adams case (and I am still looking for the video) he took things out of the photo by burning or added them back in or made them more contrasty or toned down highlights or brought up shadow detail. Adams' son showed me the original of Moon Rise over Hernandez. The final print looked NOTHING like the contact print. - Robert Scoble
Is it a social media person thing, or really just a Scoble thing? This need to be right all the time and prove everyone else wrong? - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: heheh. Here's Marc Silber's report from Ansel's house: http://www.silberstudios.tv/previou... - Robert Scoble
I try to laugh it off. Usually I succeed, but it does get irritating because folks follow the example that is set. - Jason Wehmhoener
On the other hand, I do enjoy listening to Robert talk endlessly about Ansel Adams. - Jason Wehmhoener
Jason: I care about the truth. I don't have to be right all the time and admit easily when I'm wrong. In this case Cristo is overstating the truth. I've made prints in the dark room that look NOTHING like the original photo I shot. In fact, in photo class we've used photographic paper to make images WITHOUT EVEN HAVING A PHOTO. I guess you've never heard of pinhole photography? - Robert Scoble
Not so much on video though. I rarely watch the videos. - Jason Wehmhoener
It's true that the darkroom is a place of art. - Jason Wehmhoener
It's that hyperbolic discourse that I take issue with as well. We're all just talking here. Nobody "wins". - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: your statement was 100% wrong and provably so. And I will point it out when it is. Jason: you should watch the videos with Ansel's son. They were awesome. I won't have many moments in my life like that. If you can't stand me, watch the one Marc Silber made. - Robert Scoble
It's not you Robert, I'm just not a big fan of interview video. - Jason Wehmhoener
Thread is degrading. It was pretty silly to begin with. - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: you said the art occurred when it was captured on film. That is wrong. 100% wrong. The art occurred when Ansel Adams printed it. How do I know that? Because one of his prints costs $20,000 or more. One of my reproductions (which is almost exact, by the way) costs a couple of hundred bucks, most of which is for the frame and reproduction costs. So, every museum in the world would... more... - Robert Scoble
I'm going with Robert on this one. I can capture moments all day long, but I'm not nearly talented enough to turn it into real art. - Matthew Horton
By the way, Cristo, if you were right, his negatives are open source. You can use them to print your own photos (they are in a school down in New Mexico, if I remember right). Go ahead, try to recreate his "art." His art is the COMBINATION of camera work and darkroom work. It is an all-or-nothing thing. - Robert Scoble
Matthew: many many people stood right next to Ansel while he made photos. They didn't even come close. I've stood next to Thomas Hawk while he made some great photos. Mine didn't even come close. Why? Technique, with Ansel, both in camera AND in darkroom. With Thomas? Technique, both in camera AND in Photoshop. I can't match the skill of either. No matter how good the equipment. - Robert Scoble
I had no idea a person could access Ansel's negatives. That's fascinating. OK, I was wrong about the thread. - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: more than one famous photographer has done EXACTLY that. Have someone else shoot the picture and they print it and put their name on it and collect the cash. - Robert Scoble
And now I very much would like to try making some prints from those negatives. - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: great art is always rare and there's lots of photographers that, even today, make images worth millions. See Annie Leibowitz. - Robert Scoble
I've looked at a lot of Yosemite photography. Very little of it is as interesting as Adams' photography. - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: money is how we judge art. Name one piece of great original art that you can buy. Go ahead, I'll wait. :-) - Robert Scoble
It's an incredibly forgiving place to make photos though. Even if you don't come close to Adams, you're pretty likely to make some nice images there. - Jason Wehmhoener
Great art is rare, hangs in museums, has people awe and ooh over it, and costs lots of money. It's not the money that decides great art, it's an artifact. - Robert Scoble
Anyway, this has sidetracked me enough. For everyone else, beyond the pointless arguing there's some great Ansel Adams stuff stuck in this thread somewhere. :-) - Robert Scoble
Robert: I disagree that money equates to quality in art. Damien Hirst is a genius with manipulating that fallacy. - Jason Wehmhoener
Hell, I was enjoying this in it's own tab. Now to do a /bunch/ of googling. :-) - Matthew Horton
Jason: that might be true, but I can't think of a recognized great piece of art that I can afford to hang in my house. I have a few reproductions, though, of Adams' stuff that are damn nice in my eyes and that's all that matters. Here's an additional video on how they are digitizing his work so you can afford an almost exact copy: http://scobleizer.blip.tv/file... - Robert Scoble
Having spent a great deal of time in the darkroom, I can say that easily 75-80% of the "art" of a photo is made in the darkroom. Composition and shooting under optimal conditions (which, actually, is part of the composition) is important, but the darkroom is where the real action is. To get the right print, you make several sample prints, making detailed notes of exposure time, contrast... more... - vicster.
vicster: Some of the exercises in my photo classes were based on that, doing the best in the darkroom with meh negatives. - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo, the point was sort of cogent the first couple dozen times you made it. I know we're dealing with some thick skulls here, but seriously. - Jason Wehmhoener
Oh, that's what you meant by the Paris Hilton remark. I totally didn't get that. Hmm, yah. Paris from Robert would definitely be a feat of darkroom magic. And Yosemite is awfully darn photogenic. - Jason Wehmhoener
this thread is making me really miss being in a darkroom! I should look into setting up a dry one in my garage/studio. - vicster.
vicster: totally. something that has nothing to do with Ansel: I always wanted to try color in the darkroom. Everyone said "ew! too toxic!" and I never tried it, but I still have that curiousity. - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: every image I made started with a blank piece of paper. By the way, some of which were made in pinhole cameras. In that case 100% of the image was made on the paper. Jason: color photography in darkroom is fun, but you have to be exacting and have a very good thermometer. I sill remember my $100 Kodak thermometer with great fondness. All the kids wanted to borrow it (I was one of the only ones who tried color in high school). Takes me back. Love that Cibachrome look off of Kodachrome. Awesome! - Robert Scoble
Tanath just posted this and I'm nodding in agreement: http://friendfeed.com/funny-p... - Jason Wehmhoener
Color in high school, nice. Ahead of your time there. - Jason Wehmhoener
Cristo: I made images in the darkroom that did NOT start in a camera. But to get back to the point of this, I can draw a picture but I can't do what http://www.gapingvoid.com does. So, if you asked me to recreate what he did it would be HARD. So would recreating an Ansel Adams print, even if you DID give me his negatives (which he did, because he put them into a public trust). - Robert Scoble
Robert, where can I find out more about that public trust? - Jason Wehmhoener
Also, I believe the point of the thread was that paper lacks affordances, but I suppose I digress. ;-) - Jason Wehmhoener
I think we need more charts and tables if we're going to be talking percentages here. - Jason Wehmhoener
Also, I really dug this one from Johnny Worthington: http://friendfeed.com/jworthi... - Jason Wehmhoener
Jason: his negatives and prints are here: http://www.creativephotography.org/ I think his son said that some are also stored at other schools, but I can't find out where using some simple Google searches. I'll ask his grandson and see what comes up. I'm sure it's hard to get access to them. Sort of like there's six million photos stored at the Library of Congress but most normal people... more... - Robert Scoble
Ah, nice. Another reason to visit family in Arizona. Thanks Robert! - Jason Wehmhoener

I'll be sad when the Shuttle flies its final mission. Watching these guys repair stuff in orbit serves to remind me once in a while that mankind can still do amazing feats of engineering and we're not all couch potatoes. My son will be ~5-6 when the final mission happens, I'm hoping I can attend the launch with him as I think it will leave an unforgettable impression. We once landed on the moon, and flew people into space, maybe we'll continue to do so through China and India, who knows. - Ray Cromwell
Of course, others object to the expense and favor spending money on nothing but robot missions. I'm all for robots too, but nothing captures the imagination more than building vehicles that can fly actual people there. - Ray Cromwell

Megen and I just came up with an awesome business plan: Rent-a-dad. In case you don't have someone to teach you how to buy a car, do your taxes, start a grill, go camping, etc just come to Rent-a-dad. Repeat customers get incentives like a game of catch or a free ice cream cone.

Economic Update (Monoscope) - http://www.monoscope.com/2008...
"If you had purchased $1,000 of Delta Air Lines stock one year ago, you would have $49 left. With Fannie Mae, you would have $2.50 left of the original $1,000. With AIG, you would have less than $15 left. But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drunk all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling REFUND, you would have $214 cash. Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle..."" - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
I'll be the buzzkill: recycling refunds are based on the deposit fee that is built into the price of the beer. So, based on the numbers above, you are simply returned the $214 that you gave as a deposit on the cans and, on the $786 you spent on the beer, you get a 0% financial return, though you get tons of beer. Also, at 5 cents per can, $214 in refunds equates to 4,280 cans...and with a $1,000 purchase price, that translates to 23 cents per can. Barring wholesale costs, WTF beer costs 23 cents/can? - Chester
you can call it your 401-keg...or in Chester's example above...a 401 - keg fail... - Skye Miller
A more damning "investment" comparison is that: you could have bought a Hummer last year and it would have retained more value than the stocks listed above. For that matter, one-year-old beer would probably have retained more of its original value than those stocks. - Chester
+1 @Skye :-) 401(k)(e)(g) - Doug Bloebaum
Chester, not a very effective buzzkill. ~2000, I had a friend who used to joke that he had outinvested everyone else with his "*non-interesting-bearing* checking account" - j1m
Well, anyone with a non-interest-bearing mattress is looking pretty good for 2008. - Chester
I went 100% into cash Apr 2007. The lousy 4% interest is looking pretty good now. Waiting to cost-average back in... Since I was in private equity in Feb 2000, I saw the loss of traction in deals, and also exited the market except for $20,000 ($2,000 in 10 stocks). Missed the internet crash also... - Mitchell Tsai
Since I started investing just after graduating college in 1986, I saw the 1987 crash first-hand and have a healthy respect for economic downturns. When I feel the market is too risky, I exit... Maybe I'll miss some gains. That's ok by me. - Mitchell Tsai
