i posted this photo a couple of weeks back, but the place i got it from didn't describe where it was. i wonder how much that piece of property is worth. looks lovely - Cee Bee
yeah... now we have a stronger dollar, both islands and the better side of the falls - Stewart Rogers
Wikipedia denies it: A popular tale among local guides is that the bigger part of Zavikon is in Canada, while the smaller part is in the United States, and the foot bridge between them is the "shortest international bridge in the world". However, this is not true as both islands are Canadian Territory. So, Citation needed :) - Nikhil Dandekar
Great example Ross, I'm so stoked for this terminal! - D rek
Me too! It is definitely going to change the SF skyline... should be exciting! - Ross Miller
And with it being the endpoint of the California bullet train, this place really might become SF's Grand Central Station. It's almost a shame that they no longer have train tracks on the lower deck of the Bay Bridge. (Yep, until 1963 when they turned the lower deck into more car lanes.) - Kevin Fox
Whoa. Our office is adjacent to that. So are some huge new fancy condo towers that are going up. Quite a revitalization of downtown SF. - DeWitt Clinton
Haha... He must have missed it... It's pretty cool though... FriendFeed is going to the midnight showing of Dark Knight tonight... can't wait! - Ross Miller
Hmn... sounds like if you wake up to coffee and white bread and eat baked beans with a Guinness and glass of red wine for dinner you'll be healthy as can be... - Ross Miller
@Ross...I think I have failed you in the nutritional knowledge dept. - Skye Miller
In other words...your suggestion above is a nutritional fail! - Skye Miller
Coming to a Hot Topic near you. Better wear Sunscreen with that. Absolutely useless in public for 3-9 months out of the year depending on where you live. - Jacob
"...and in the future, people pay good money for clothes with holes cut in them!" - Karim
Karim, don't you remember the stupid pre-torn jeans you could buy for $100 back in the 90s? - Tad Donaghe
Those are kinda cool, but will probably only survive washing maybe once?? In the close-up on the site it doesn't look like the edges are finished in any way. - Shannon Jiménez
I saw a young woman in the DB ticket station with these. They looked kind of funny, but they looked good on her (she had a body that could show them off) --- and yes, the holes were in the front. - Piaw Na
"This dork, James, however, is someone neither of us speak to. Why bother? Look at him. Lights are on, but no one is home, as our friend Ethan says." - Jim Norris via Bookmarklet
@Jini: 2020. The system should be in service in 2020, and become "commercially self-sustainable" in 2030, when it would cross 100M passengers/year. From the text of proposition 1 (which you should vote for in November): "At a minimum, the entire 700-mile system described in the
High-Speed Rail Authority’s Business Plan should be constructed and
in revenue service by 2020." See http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/... - Tudor Bosman
Construction should start in 2010, and 10 years to build a California-wide train system is a long time, but not unreasonable. Of course, judging by how long it took for BART service to be extended to the San Francisco airport after the project was approved, I'd say 2050 is a more realistic opening date... - Tudor Bosman
I'd pay extra to not have to go through Fresno. - Jim Norris
Sonoma County votes "Yes", Marin County votes "No". Marin is delaying me from accessing SF via smart public transport. Get your "Yes" vote on, Marin! - Andrew Meyer
i just really like the site! great visualization at work here. - Nice Fish Films
Nothing good ever starts from Fresno. - Steve Craft
"According to a life cycle analysis by Franklin Associates, Ltd, plastic bags create fewer airborne emissions and require less energy during the life cycle of both types of bags per 10,000 equivalent uses -- plastic creates 9.1 cubic pounds of solid waste vs. 45.8 cubic pounds for paper; plastic creates 17.9 pounds of atmospheric emissions vs. 64.2 pounds for paper; plastic creates 1.8 pounds of waterborne waste vs. 31.2 pounds for paper." So... Plastic wins by a long shot, but if you're really trying to save the planet you have to go canvas... - Ross Miller via Bookmarklet
Using reusable bags like cloth or recycled material is the way to go. If you shop in Europe, you can end up paying for each bag as a deterrent for creating waste. Like many things in the US, companies have not tried it because the pushback is considered bad for business. I hope that one of them will take the chance and do it. At least some of the chains are selling reusable bags to people who think of recycling at this point, not only Whole Foods but a few mainstream chains as well. - Aron Michalski
Yeah, I've noticed a big push toward store branded reusable bags, but it would definitely help motivate people if stores charged for plastic/paper bags... - Ross Miller
I thought the problem with plastic was that they would blow away and become litter, eventually strangling wildlife in the ocean or whatever. - ⓞnor
in most hotels in Hong Kong, they provide a cloth shopping bag; and the shopkeepers are quite happy when you use it. Noting also, that China has banned the plastic bag; though that's probably more of litter issue which was politically shifted into a 'green' solution as well - clarke thomas
Some stores like Whole Foods give you $0.10 for each bag that you bring in. It isn't much, but shows somewhat of a commitment. It would be interesting to see if you raised that to $0.50 or a $1.00 what effect it would have considering the higher grocery bills... - Derek Coatney
I just bought a ton of poop-bags for my dog. They're 100% degradable and you'll find them in any dog store. The best part is the cute fire hydrant that attaches to the leash that holds the bags. No more scrounging around for bags or taking the SF examiner wrapping :) - Ivan Kirigin
I've a friend who manufactures plastic bags and he told me to watch out when using them. A bag contains harmful chemicals both in the manufacturing process and in the product itself. Best to wash your hands or any items in it after usage least you consume any of the color dye or calcium carbonate specks. - Jason
I use reusable cloth bags. Wegman's sells them for $1, they help the environment and are dead useful. - Benjamin Golub
I'm becoming a fan of the cloth bags. Not only are they reusable, they're stronger than both paper and plastic. I just need to remember to bring them. - Robert Konigsberg
I only use shopping bags made out of hemp, they're three times stronger than normal cloth bags, and you can smoke them once you get home with your munchies. - Jim Norris

An "owl" is someone who wakes up at 8 or 9am? I guess Paul is a bat :). - Sanjeev Singh
I'm just trying to convert myself being a morning person. I really don't get it. After being in bed (sleeping!) from 9PM, at 7AM I STILL won't wake up... - Claudio Cicali
At 3:30pm every day, I'm a sleepy monkey - Ginger Makela
I have tried to take naps in the past and have always ended up feeling awful for the rest of the day. I've tried both short naps (~20 minutes) and longer naps but either way I end up suffering from "sleep inertia" for hours (ie: until I get a night's sleep). - Laurence Gonsalves
I often have the craziest dreams when I nap. Awsome. - Marianne Lenox
