This is a very true point of view on the unnatural and even materialistic lengths undertaken for the "proper" burial of a beloved relative. The commercial implications of even dying are troubling as keeping up with the Joneses continues past our life. However, as a physical anthropologist, my entire career revolves and relies on the preservation of the dead … BUT I agree with this author. If preservation truly holds a cultural sentiment behind it, following your belief set is essential to surviving the grief (and guilt if you didn't)… But if you just want a fancy tombstone to keep up your appearance… I think we need to actually think and ask, do the dead care?
