As a scrounger, saver and maker myself (albeit on a much smaller scale) the realization of transforming other people’s trash into experiential art resonates so hard. Love what they do. Can’t wait to see this installation in the flesh.

Doc, my sailing coach at CofC was a lover of jazz so eight hour drives to regattas (South to Florida and North to Annapolis) were regularly accompanied by the excessive volume of Thelonious Monk.

As passengers listening to more than our fair share of jazz, our response was comparable to those shown in this audience. How much fun do these people look like they’re having?! Nice shades though!

This clip, funny enough, is also sprinkled with scenes from the 1958 America’s Cup in Newport. And at the 2:00 mark there’s a shot of an outboard engine, identical to the one we use on our skiff today!

Describe your style.
Adaptable. I can wear the dirtiest work gear, the fanciest party dress, and everything in between. My favorite is getting all dressed up. I have a collection of vintage party dresses that I need more reasons and occasions to bust out!

Maine is…
Everything I never knew I wanted.

This month Maine Magazine offers a strangely refreshing look at the contrasted reality of living in Maine. Beautiful and romantic just like this picture, yet there’s an acknowledgment of Batchelor’s not so romantic job - a tiny glimpse of what people do to call this place home.

By turns comical and wistful, the work offers the viewer an opportunity to look backward and forward in time. What happens to the earth? What happens to our homes? What becomes of the people who live and work in specific places? What do we leave behind for the future?

PopTech is known for its yearly conference overflowing high caliber speakers and performers, but what you might not know is that 2009 marks the completion of year two of the PopTech Social Innovation Fellows program. A program dedicated to supporting and accelerating the efforts of the movers and shakers of tomorrow.

Each year, 10-20 promising innovators are chosen to participate in an all-expenses-paid education and mentoring program during the week leading up to PopTech. The Fellows then participate and briefly present during the conference. Read more about the Fellows Program here.

The video above is an introduction to the 2009 Fellows. Impressive stuff.

What is it that makes it so hard sometimes to determine whither we will walk? I believe that there is a subtle magnetism in Nature, which, if we unconsciously yield to it, will direct us aright. It is not indifferent to us which way we walk. There is a right way; but we are very liable from heedlessness and stupidity to take the wrong one. We... - http://emilyqualey.tumblr.com/post...
