On reflection I don't think i've really utilised my extra time wisely. I didn't do as much revision as I had hoped but i'm still optimistic. This week was quite busy for me as I had to campaign for the role of ACS treasurer. I enjoyed the #BS1006 and #BS1008 practicals this week. I'm going to make a revision plan today, for the forthcoming week. I also had a blast at the BSS Ball, which helped me end my week on a much lighter note :)

Hi guys remember to vote for me as you Welfare Secretary, your vote will go a long way! :)
It has been a very long week. The lesson I learnt this week is learn to use your time WISELY! So I had 3 essays, 2 practical reports and a practical booklet to complete in 3 days. They all got done in the end, but with MUCH pain. I became very ill and couldn't even go to uni on thruday or Friday and I think this is because I overworked myself. I felt very fulfilled when I had finished all the tasks and i've just rested for most of the weekend. On a much lighter note, I was very happy to see that from week 19 which is WB - 7 March, my timetable becomes a lot less hectic meaning I have more time to do work and start revision. I'm now feeling very optimistic about the coming weeks :)
- Emmanuelle
Not liking the illness! Just agreeing haha.

In BS-1005, we have been learning about DNA repair i.e. the repair of damage by pyrimidine dimers. This article suggests a possible link between such damaged DNA and cancer.
- Emmanuelle
Still battling with these essays. As challenging as this week has been i've really enjoyed getting stuck in with the work! :)
I've found the last couple of slides of the 'Experiment 2' powerpoint on Blackboard helpful, and also Lecture 6 :) I think I've got my head around it now, but was finding it really hard before! :)
- Evelyn O'Carroll
Last day of term tomorrow, can't say i'm disappointed! I can't wait to get the #BS1015 exam and last #BS1012 practical over and done with. It has been an interesting first semester though :)
I just realised the importance of the #CH1070 module. "The hydrolysis of phosphoanhydride bonds releases alot of energy". This is from the #BS1015 lecture slides on ATP. When I first read that statement I didn't fully understand it however, after reviewing my #CH1070 notes on carbonyl compounds, I found out what phosphoanhydrides are. This may be...
I'm doing some revision and have implemented the tips from #BS1020, I do 30 mins of solid work and then have a little break. I think it's quite helpful :)
Yes it is a good tip. However, it can be tempting to get carried away with breaks and lose focus of the task at hand. I guess it's all about finding the right balance :)
- Emmanuelle
Yeah, but maybe you should plan what you're going to do in the break as well?
- Yewande O
Ahhh, I didn't think of that actually. Yeah, I think i'll try that.
- Emmanuelle
I keep neglecting my textbooks and just reading lecture notes. I need to start reading my textbooks e.g. the suggested 'Stryer' in the #BS1015 module, especially because it wasn't cheap!
Yea, it's easy to forget about them! :)
- Emmanuelle
Today has definitely not been a great day. I didn't deliver a very effective presentation for my #BS1012 tutorial, I battled with revision and I am still trying to complete the #BS1015 practical write up. Well hopefully tomorrow will be a better day :)
After a second attempt I really feel like the notes for the #BS1010 assessment are inadequate, could just be me, but hey I guess i'm DEFINITELY attending the help session.
The help sessions are really useful if you are struggling with something so I would recommend that you make the time to go :) The staff are really helpful and are willing to go that extra mile to help you understand :)
- Lyndsey Wright
I think I will go as well after dropping marks on the conversions test I cant afford t frop anymore if help is just sitting their!
- Benjamin Tanner
Take a deep breath, don't panic, and realise that you can do it. You're not alone in feeling stressed, but you'll cope brilliantly, I'm sure!
- Joshua Bower
Don't worry :) Just work slow and steady and make sure you take frequent breaks to keep you motivated :) e.g. work an hour, have a 20 min break!
- Lyndsey Wright
Actually, it's just life. Plan. Set SMART targets. BiteSize your tasks.
- Dr Alan Cann
This article just caught my eye. In #BS1012, alot of things we learn about, are based on the assumption of evolution. For example in taxonomy, we can classify animals according to synapomorphies (shared derived features). Alot of these derived features are said to enable the organism they have arisen in to adapt to its surrounding environment better. So I thought it would be interesting to read about the evolution of the world's largest mammal :)

#FridayReflection Bookmarking - how are you saving online resources so you can find and access them in the future when you need them?
Good thing I saw this post. To be honest i haven't consciously book-marked anything. When I need to find something again I check the webpage history on my laptop. That isn't always ideal, as I don't always have access to my laptop and anything could go wrong, whereby the history could be wiped out. I guess I need to start bookmarking. If anyone has any tips feel free to comment! :)
- Emmanuelle
Hmm ...I add them in the favourites bar so as to find them ... later when i finish working with them and do not need them any more i remove them from favourites bar :)) ... The other thing you can do is copying the url address in a word document save it so as to find it later :)) .... Hope I was helpfull :)
- Persefoni Ioannou
Take a look at how some other people are working by searching on #fridayreflection. Dr Cann, Dr Willmott and I all use an onlIne bookmarking system called delicious.
- Dr Jo Badge
from iPod
Thanks Persefoni, I think i"m going to try adding them in the favourites bar!! And Thanks Dr Badge, delicious seems to be popping up alot, I'll give it a try.

Would like to know when i'm going to my write up back from the #BS1015 practical 2! I also feel that it would be helpful if the marks awarded for each question were on the sheet before we complete the questions, I find that it gives guidance as to how much one should write!
Yeah, same! I think the whole system for #BS1015 marking is confusing!
- Jalpan Patel
Really enjoying the #BS1012 lectures so far, i'm finding it especially interesting as I believe in creationism and most of what we're learning is based on theories that oppose creationism (i.e. evolution). Let's see what the rest of the course has in store!
I would really like to hear a biology lecturer walk into a room, say "God did it" and walk away.. that would be awesome.
- Adam
It would be! But I'd be slightly stuck in the exam :P.
- Aneeka Ul-Haq
Yeh, I'm a creationist as well - I became one about 4 years ago. The lectures have been very interesting so far. I'm not afraid to learn about theories I disagree with, as long as we are allowed to take a critical approach. It's interesting that so far, lectures from all modules have confirmed my belief in a Designer rather than shaken it.
- Joe Bailey
I am not a creationist, however I don't believe in the big-bang either, I think the universe is infinite in both time and space. There was never a start, there will be no end, it will just continue being. (I don't know what that makes me in terms of belief lol)
- Adam
I'm a creationist too. Like Joe, everything I've learnt so far in Biology, including natural selection, has confirmed my belief in a Designer. It will be good to learn and understand more about the theories that people have proposed for the origin of life and the relationships between different animals, but I am going to be wary about basing my beliefs on people's imaginations.

I hope I get my marks for my #BS1015 and #BS1003 essays back in time before I have to write another essay, if not i will not be a happy bunny. I understand there are alot of us, but I really don't want to keep repeating the same mistakes in numerous pieces of work!!!
I totally agree with you. With the feedback on essays we can get improved. I think mark for the #BS1015 essay will be given on the 30th of this month:/
- Constantinos Lipsos
I came across this article and decided to share it. It has a connection with the work we did on the agrobacterium in practicals 1 and 4 of the #bs1003 module. It talks about some of the mechanisms mammals have evolved to prevent cancer, one of which is senescence. This was a characteristic feature of the control explants used in these practicals.
- Emmanuelle
Would have been useful for the write up! :)
- Aneeka Ul-Haq
Still doing the #BS1015 practical write up and stuck on question 3 on page 52! Is there an equation we should use for this question?? Any thoughts? Would be MUCH appreciated!
Hmm i need some management too :)) I did neither deal with the #BS1010 essay and got little stressed :P
- Persefoni Ioannou
Yea, it's so easy to forget things. I got quite stressed today as well about the #CH1070 exam and handing in the essay! I then got even more stressed when I realised I had not really contributed to my group's #BS1010 essay. I think it's good to do a bit of everything and assign equal amounts to each module and then pay more attention to specific modules closer to their deadlines!
