My problem with all the coaches being fired is the assumption that with the exact same group of players, another coach would achieve a higher result. If that's the case, and the coach is the lynch pin, why aren't they the highest paid individual in the organisation?
I see it the other way, it shows a coach on a professional team in most sports is an overhyped peon who can be replaced at any time with almost anyone and that new person will have a good shot at a better record. - Steve C, Team Marina
That actually proves my case. Getting rid of the coach is the cop out. You can't fire the high paid star so appear to do 'something' without doing anything - Johnny from iPhone
You can't practically fire/waive/trade all the players or even a big fraction of them, or at least not quickly, so sometimes you fire the coach to send a message to the players (and no, that's not exactly fair to the coach). But that said, outside of strategy and tactics, there's also the intangible question: do the players listen to this coach? Cause if not, if the coach has irretrievably lost this group, then the coach has to go. - Andrew C (✔) from Android
How can a coach ever have any authority if all the people the coach 'leads' know that if they suck, their job is safe and they just have to 'withdraw their support'. - Johnny from iPhone
I guess the coach needs to persuade without the backup of conferred authority. - Andrew C (✔) from Android
The threat of losing your job has a bit more bite in American football because there are no guaranteed contracts. These teams can cut players at any time for any reason. The rosters of a lot of the teams that fired coaches today will likely look quite different on opening day of next season. Admittedly the teams are unlikely to cut their most expensive players outright but they may be... more... - DB, Lil LB's Dad
If you look at mid-season firings like the Cowboys 2010 season where they went 1-7 with Wade Phillips who was fired mid season and replaced with Jason Garrett who went 5-3 for the remainder of the season, or Jim Harbaugh's 13-3 season last year with essentially the same team that was 6-10 the year before under Mike Singletary, you can certainly see examples where the coach seems to make a big difference.... - Ken Sheppardson
I think what it comes down to in terms of salary, however, is a supply/demand thing. You can look at a player and get a pretty good idea what their individual contribution will be, and judge them against all the other players available in that position. The pool of available coaches is much larger, and how well they'll perform with a particular set of players isn't something you can predict before hand. They end up cycling through lots of coaches looking for the best fit, not necessarily the best on paper. - Ken Sheppardson
If you sit down at the end of a season and say "who could be our starting QB next year?" that list is pretty short. The "who could be our head coach next year?" list is much, much longer: coaches from poorly performing NFL team who you think might be a better fit for your team than their existing team, all the offensive or defensive coordinators around the league, the pool of college coaches... any of them might be an option... so that starting QB is a little more rare and will make more $$$. - Ken Sheppardson
Does the coach not manage recruiting in professional football, like they do in college? Sometimes it's required to ditch the coach in hopes that the new guy can change the organization eventually (2-3 years out), normally. - OCoG of FF, Jimminy
I don't think college really has positions corresponding to the NFL general manager or team ownership, who on some (most?) teams have a larger role than the coach in hiring players and putting together a team under the salary cap. That tends to be a pretty big point in NFL coach contract negotiations, i.e. how much say the coach will really have in putting together the team. - Ken Sheppardson
Usually firing of a coach is accompanied by player turnover, especially when a team is really bad. The new coach will want players that fit his preferred offensive and defensive systems. Since contracts in the NFL usually aren't fully guaranteed, it's easy to jettison players without too much financial impact to the team. Plus coaches are responsible for developing strategies to counter... more... - John (bird whisperer)
What a year, 2012. Graduation, new job, transcontinental flights, Italian pickpockets, but most of all great, loving, supportive friends. <3

Well put, Greg. - Stephen Mack
So happy that G+ has groups now. :-) Even happy to see so many FFers over there already. - Kol Tregaskes
It's a shame that they didn't do this from the start. It looks a reasonably good implementation but coming this late it looks to me as if one of the impacts will be to fragment some of the groups that have already formed over there. Time will tell, of course. - Mark H
Can you find your discussions? - Todd Hoff
Yes, sort of, via notifications -- depending on how you have things set up. - Christopher Carr
Google has the search thing down pretty well. ;-) - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Eeew, i hate notifications. I just want to see my discussions simply within the interface without gettin an email and a little red box. Oh, and issues like to see my likes too. Thanx Santa. - Todd Hoff
Turn off emails and notifications: problems solved. :-) - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
The I get the red box, which is just as annoying - Todd Hoff
The red notification can be disabled from inside the community page. The little Bell thingy on the left beneath the FF logo. - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)

Our cat. Everyday a new live present. He brings them through the window which we have rigged like a cat door. Luckily it is the window to the downstairs half bath, so when I open that door and see a critter, I quickly shut the door.

What motivates a cat to bring these items to a home? Why doesn't the cat just take care of the animal where he/she found it? - John E. Bredehoft
I'm really not sure he even eats them. Brings them in, plays with them, then takes them outside when we yell at him or (unfortunately with the squirrel), just splits and leaves us to deal with them. - Laura Norvig from iPhone
Here we go again. He has been hanging out in the kitchen a lot today and all night. Very uncharacteristic for him. I assume there is a mouse hiding behind something in there. - Laura Norvig

"Have you ever wanted to live the life of an Argentinean soccer player? Is your main complaint about Sweeney Todd the fact that you can’t find reviews for that restaurant on Yelp? Did you find that one horrifying episode of Mythbusters intriguing, but in the end, insufficiently delicious? Then get your rump roast to Wesker and Son butchers at London’s Smithfield Market, where they’re selling everything you need to host a Donner party. Human hands for the equivalent of $8? So cheap! Kids, we’re having ladyfingers tonight!" - Big Joe Silenced from Bookmarklet
"Of course, this is actually just animal meat dressed up to look like human meat, but some of it is … pretty convincing. Photos below this point are a bit more graphic, fair warning. I’d tell you to just keep repeating to yourself “it’s only normal meat that someone has lovingly sculpted into the shape of human body parts,” but I could see how that wouldn’t help much. Also, there are penises." - Big Joe Silenced
"I think we should all be eating less meat anyway, and come to think of it, this is probably a good way to achieve that. But then again, wouldn’t this prosciutto hand be nice grilled and wrapped around some figs? Tasty AND suggestive!" - Big Joe Silenced
"If you’re not thoroughly grossed out yet, evaluate your life, but also you can go see more photos at The Picky Glutton." - Big Joe Silenced

Living in San Francisco I know friends and family with a post-quake meet-up plan: when all the phone lines/internet are down and you can't get anywhere in the city, everybody's going to meet at X. There's also somebody outside the area who's the designated point of contact: you let them know you're alright and where you are as soon as you can, and everybody else just gets in touch with that person if/when they can.... - Ken Sheppardson

Still don't understand the fascination with football (American). They spend 4x the amount of time NOT playing as they do playing.

John, I don't care for watching baseball on TV, no. I used to go to a game live once in a while, and that's fun, but it's the atmosphere and wandering around and getting hot dogs and hanging with friends and stuff more than the game. - Jandy from iPhone
I'm a sports fan, but don't watch a lot of baseball or football on TV. Going to a live game is so much better. The whole atmosphere is what makes it great. It gets you more involved. - Rodfather

soccer? - sofarsoShawn from iPhone
I think ice hockey was the most exciting sport I've watched live. It's so fast and you're right up in there. - Rodfather
I don't mind watching soccer, hockey, or basketball, though I don't follow any of them. If I watch sports, I prefer stuff like skiing or figure skating, or more unusual stuff (I was fascinated by the biathlon last Olympics - cross-country skiing and rifle shooting? What?). - Jandy from iPhone
But also, something like biathlon makes sense to me - those are skills you would've needed to survive if you lived in, like rural Norway back whenever and skiing was the main method of getting around and hunting was how you got food. I like that sense of an actual historic purpose to the skillset. - Jandy from iPhone
It's a cold weather thing. It's the perfect way to kill a few hours when it's too cold to do anything else. Granted, watching the game on the tube is not nearly as much fun as going to the game (or playing the game, which is awesome no matter how many teeth you get loosened, especially in sub-zero weather), but the game was always a staple of our home when I was young, because it was nice to disengage one's brain and melt into the couch. - Steven Perez
