“Water” hopefully gave Stargate fans what they wanted this week: SGU’s first stand-alone episode. - Eoghann Irving from Bookmarklet
I'm still pretty 'meh' about SGU. I find all of the characters unsympathetic and so far the story lines have been boring or predictable. The last episode "Water" was a step in the right direction but was absolutely forgettable. I'm hoping things get more interesting. - veo
I haven't watched this weeks episode (which kind of tells you I'm not blown away so far). It almost feels like it's trying too hard to be BSG and Stargate shouldn't be BSG. - Eoghann Irving
The most recent SGU was easily the best so far. I think the prospects for the show are increasing as far as I'm concerned. - veo

"Are there any [comic book movies] you've seen floating around in Hollywood that you'd like to see made? Yeah, I can, there was one or two that I heard of that sounded really cool. One of them was about, I think... it's a vampire and a killer, and they're on the road, and it's this really strange story. I thought that sounded pretty cool. Also some of the obscure ones, I don't know if there are any more superheroes left. That sounds a little bit like Preacher? I think it might have been Preacher. You should get involved with that! I'm trying to. I heard about that one, I like that." - RAPatton from Bookmarklet

"No, really, it’s true. Look at Marvel’s moves after he left the book. The very first thing they did was launch X-Men: Reload, a branding and soft-relaunch initiative that saw Chris Claremont put on Uncanny X-Men, Chuck Austen placed on the last two issues of New X-Men (where he cleaned up plots that were already perfectly clean), and Joss Whedon hired to write what turned out to be one long love letter to the glory days of Claremont/Byrne Uncanny X-Men." - Derek Coward from Bookmarklet
Is it just me or does the author spend the entire time contradicting his headline? - Eoghann Irving
I think he was trying to be a little too sensational. he should have called it 'Grant Morrison ruined the x-men by being too awesome' but that wouldn't have gotten as many people to check out what he was saying. - Derek Coward from fftogo

Is it worth getting a netbook to use while commuting? If so, what one? I'd like it to run Windows 7 if possible.
I tend to go with whatever PC Pro says: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/alist... and they've recommended a Samsung netbook (which doesn't appear to be available now but there are newer versions). I don't want to spend more than £300 machine (in fact a lot less would be good) but I would like to use it on the train and train station to work. - Kol Tregaskes
most netbooks are atom powered and i don't think they can run 7 well, XP runs slowly get one with higher processor - ffcode

I'm tempted to pick up a netbook this year due to portability factor. If the netbook can run XP it ought to run at least as well or better on Windows 7. - Eoghann Irving
I'm wondering though (since I plan on keeping the laptop, desktop and N800) about putting linux on the netbook so I can play around a bit. - Eoghann Irving

Just got a call from an IT recruiter. Call me crazy, but I've decided to be as upfront and honest with them as possible - Recruiter "How are you at HTML and CSS?" Me "I can get the job done, but I'm not going to be the fastest and probably not the best." Last thing I want is to fudge my way into a job and fail miserably at it as a result.
Honesty, FTW. - Derrick
My checking account might not agree with it, but oh wells... I did mention to him that I'm spot on a spec gathering and user training, so who knows, maybe he'll find something. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
If you know what you are not good at, it makes it easier to determine what you are good at, so a better match is possible. I once went on an interview for a PeopleSoft consulting job. Turned out they were looking for a DBA, not a business analyst/trainer/implementer. That's when I started being bluntly honest. Actually walked out of two interviews. - Rene Wirtz

it'd be nice if they stopped deflating the compensation, too. - Joe Silence is not dead
At this point I see deflating compensation as an unavoidable side effect of the current job market. But hell, expecting to get a degreed, certified, 7-10 year experienced tech genius for $12 an hour stateside is absurd regardless of where in the US you are. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I remember back when the web was young (mid 90s) seeing adverts looking for people with 5+ years experience in web development and wondering what the HR guys were smoking that day. - Eoghann Irving
Is there a way to assert what you have accomplished with HTML and CSS, w/o comparing to the fastest or best? - T. Brent, technopeasant
I'm sure there is. Thing is, coding is something I can do, not necessarily something I *want* to do. I don't enjoy it enough to want to take a job doing it and I'm not good enough at it to truly serve a company's needs for it. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Some of those recruiters are a little ruthless (of course, not all). Tread carefully before driving 50 miles T - Charlie Anzman
+++Ken Tina have you kept an ePortfolio of your work? That will help. I agree with your response: be honest and at the right moment tactfully bring up the discrepancy of the economy and the pay as an advantage to the company. I would rather hire a loyal dependable employee I can train and would accept a slower pace from than all the talent with an attitude. - Melanie Reed
Not really, Melanie, because I don't really do a lot with actual design. I've done way more reverse engineering in order to maintain sites and software that was already in existance. It's definitely a skill, but a hard skill to exhibit. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
By "reverse engineering" Am I understanding correctly that you have planning and analysis skills? Do you have hard UML skills? Can you create Use Case Scenarios for site planning, architecture, and upgrade? It sounds like you already do some of that. If you had an ePortfolio you could demonstrate that with B/A scrnshts. And Business proposals for site upgrades using UML - Melanie Reed
I'm all for honesty. I got my current job by interviewing for a different position in the company, finding out more about it and telling the hiring manager that I probably wasn't the candidate best suited to the job. About an hour later he called me back to arrange an interview with a different hiring manager for a different position. -- Can you provide case studies of business improvements from reverse engineering...this project saved the company $x and increased sales by x%? - Sally Robinson
@Sally that's what i was driving at... - T. Brent, technopeasant
Melanie, I'm trying to think of the best way to describe my last job and failing miserably. Long story short it was a small company that had some big clients, way bigger than our resources would indicate. If it needed to be done I found a way to get it done, whether that was hardware upgrades, server admin, server migrations, planning/spec'ing/designing software enhancements, data... more... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
+++Sally yes quantifying that with value to the company in terms of money saved/made - Melanie Reed
Tina, that's a helpful break down. As you are talking with us you are getting the terminology to use. Do ask your older employer what he/she feels you did in helping the company with your skills. Ask them if they wouldn't mind giving you a number for your resume. They can only tell you no. :) They would have to be pretty hard-hearted to refuse you in this economy - Melanie Reed
Tina, it sounds as if you are an IT "free safety" and that is a very valuable skillset to have. You have the capability of wearing a number of "hats" it appears. You have crossover skills and are a quick study when it comes to existing applications. - Melanie Reed
That sounds about right. Like I said, it's very useful when needed but hard to communicate on paper. Combine that with the fact that the job before last was customer service training and you get a veritable jane of all trades. Again, hard to communicate on paper. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Often, your cover letter or personal connections are a better introduction than your c.v. itself. Have you thought of going on informal interviews at places you might like to work? Don't forget that you're interviewing potential employers as much as they interview you. - Sally Robinson
That's where the job market is biting me in the butt, Sally. We're cruising at about 11-12% unemployment right now, no one is doing informal anythings right now. If they were they'd be flooded with people. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I know. I don't envy anyone in your position. I used to think that everyone's mantra should be "why can't we all just get along?" I'm thinking I should change that to "why can't we all just get a job?" - Sally Robinson
I relocated. Is that an option for you? (easier said than done, I know) - T. Brent, technopeasant
I'll have an unpaid internship open for a ghost Friendfeeder soon. - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF) from iPod
Not really T.Brent. I won't say 'no' flat out because I will do stupid things for stupid money, but it's 99% out of the question: we own a house here, my husband has a job, our families are here. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
at least hubby has a job :) - T. Brent, technopeasant

"Just over twenty years ago, one of Alan Moore’s seminal works finally concluded, starting off in relative obscurity and — aided by the runaway success of Watchmen, completed three years earlier in 1986 — made Moore into a legend. It was subversive. It was brutal. It was a love letter to truth, justice, and the Anarchist way — it was violent and vicarious, volatile and visionary." - Eoghann Irving from Bookmarklet

'V' review: Resistance is (mostly) futile - #tv #V
"The remake of "V" that lands amid heavy promotion by ABC on Tuesday gets a lot of things right. It sets up its story quickly, draws at least a few of its characters in more than one dimension and looks very good" - Eoghann Irving from Bookmarklet
Oh snap, is that on tomorrow? - Derrick
Yes. Tomorrow at 8 EST - Alan Simpson
Whoever wrote this should turn in their keyboard. it looks terrible, and there aren't any characters with more than one dimension. "idiot kid" "workaholic mom" "conflicted by faith priest" "conflicted by fame reporter" are not multidimensional characters - Richard Lawler
I'm actually not surprised it's written by someone who worked on the 4400, it's like everything that wasn't good about that show (which I loved) but with a bigger budget. - Richard Lawler
...but it's TV, not HBO, .LOLz! lowest common denomintor in order to appeal to the widest audience can only beget stereotypes, imho. I caught Ep. 1, and I think the acting, while not great, provided a bit of relief. i tweeted about this before the show: saw the first V when I was a kid, thought it was cheesy, expected cheese in Hi-Def tonight...and got it. I'll continue watching a bit more to confirm... - .LAG liked that
but a cheesy by-the-numbers remake? It's a recreation of other stuff that wasn't that good and isn't as good as any of them. - Richard Lawler
But the ORIGINAL was cheeesy and by the numbers... I mean I love it, but honestly let's not pretend it was great writing. - Eoghann Irving
That's my point, it's not even as good as that, so why do it? There's nothing about it good or redeeming. - Richard Lawler
Don't watch it? *shrug* That's how I feel about FlashForward. I liked the pilot, kinda, but I don't know what happened after that. - Derrick
Oh, I won't be watching it long, but now that I've suffered an hour of that shit, I've earned the right to call it as it is. - Richard Lawler
To each their own. I liked it. It needed two hours for the setup, which hurt it, but it has potential. - Eoghann Irving
where do you see it? The actors are bad, the writing is bad and to describe the plot as "uninspired" besmirches the name of other much more worthwhile uninspired plots. - Richard Lawler
I don't want to get in a sniping match with you, but I'm just not watching the same show. The acting was adequate to good in my view. The writing was imperfect but my issues were entirely with the speed they introduced stuff, and visually I really liked it. I really don't get the vitriol. There have been far worse network sci-fi shows in the last 5 years. - Eoghann Irving
I liked it as well. The writing and acting was just fine with me. Of course I've always had a very high suspension of disbelief. Which is fine by me as it allows me to be able to enjoy a lot of programming that others don't seem to be able to. The only downside is dealing with the cancellations of a lot of shows I liked. - Tony, Paradox of FF
Which actor was good? Emotionless juliet? the most generic rebellious teenager ever or his idiot friend? Ice queen alien lady? Firefly pilot guy wasn't terrible but he had what, 4 lines? Morris Chestnut is a professor emeritus of the bad acting school, I don't know who I could have missed. - Richard Lawler
Your criticisms there don't really go to acting, but to scripting. The acting isn't Oscar worthy but by the standards of prime time network drama, it's up to par. - Eoghann Irving
No, they go to the acting, all those people are always bad in their roles, and they had the same problems here. Maybe they measure up to dreck like Heroes or a Sci Fi network saturday night special, but your average CSI episode has better acting, and that's not a good thing. - Richard Lawler
And again I say to each their own. I simply disagree with the majority of what you're saying. - Eoghann Irving
Richard ...all great points. I really enjoy your takes on TV, a medium of which I'm a lifelong fan. The best point you bring up in this thread is that it was cheesy when it first aired, so why do it again now when the source material was weak to begin with. I have two hunches: 1) if I remember correctly, the original V miniseries was a huge ratings winner (so try to emulate that success) and 2) perhaps it was the pet project of an influential exec at the network... speculating. - .LAG liked that
Oh I get why they would make it, this has gotta be the easiest to write show ever. I just don't get why anyone should watch it. - Richard Lawler
...and not to mention: if it's easy to write -- like hardly at all, let's say -- then it's cheap to write. they probably looked at their development slate, and figured this one was already made, just warm it up. like taking a frozen dinner out of the fridge and sticking it in the microwave. People watch because it's new... to a new generation. .LOLz! - .LAG liked that
But I mean shit...just watch the old one. This one isn't even completely updated. Graffiti and pamphlets? How about a twitter feed and a google wave? - Richard Lawler
Graffiti hasn't gone away and the show used computers and online videos. - Eoghann Irving
It was painfully dated. Everything about the scene "YOU'RE V TAGGING?" felt 80s with the exception of it being in an online video. it just didn't make sense. - Richard Lawler
Louis Gray
Social Media Influencers are not Traditional Influencers - http://www.briansolis.com/2009...
I think this is why i don't like people who "network". Everything becomes so calculated it's fake. Connecting to connect may be aimless I suppose, but at least it's genuine. He's right in many ways, but it assumes the purpose of all interactions is to sell something. - Eoghann Irving
Relationships are not always calculated, they can just happen....the article lends itself to saying you need an agenda for every relationship online / offline. And really, measuring Influence by digital means is also misleading. I feel better now : ) - Owen Greaves
hmmm ... there's nothing fake about me and I "network" the world over online and face to face. Networking is my life. Is that wrong? - Thomas Power
Thomas Power, I don't think it's wrong. I mean, I don't think you're hurting anyone. But I don't care to deal with people who have an agenda every time they talk to someone which is basically what this article advocates doing. - Eoghann Irving

@Kenton: That usually gives an edge. Though if Apple announced that their iTablet is available for pre-order with only some teaser-logo to show and an one-liner that bashes Microsoft, it would probably outsell due to the dedicated fan-base. ;) - Jemm

I'm much more intrigued at Courier than the rumor of what Apple's Tablet will look like. Depends; if I'm not crunched for time (i.e., trying to get through as many shows as possible, or only have 45 minutes to watch a show), I'll often let them roll because it's less hassle than grabbing the remote and fastforwarding. Especially if I'm also doing stuff on the computer (which is most of the time), because then I can use the commercial break to give full attention to the computer briefly. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF

WTF? Novell is implementing Wave for the Enterprise? @mgloerich says. You think enterprise guys will get THAT? Hahahahah!
wonder what microsoft thinks of that given the novell microsoft alliance. - Dan Morrill AKA Techwag
Well, it took a while for enterprises to 'get' wikis to. - James Kuypers
Makes perfect sense. Wave is a technology that's still in development. If the bugs and quirks can be ironed out it's very suitable for Enterprise situations. A company like Novell is well placed to steer that development. - Eoghann Irving
I think enterprises will "get" Wave. As far as business is concerned (other than marketing) Twitter, FF are toys. Wave is a potential business tool that can solve real problems. That is why most Twitter and FF fan boys don't get it. - Brian Sullivan
I agree with Brian. They'll be plenty of front ends to help ease usage. - Mark Essel from iPhone
i think that small groups collaborating is probably going to be the sweet spot for wave - Chris Heath
great! - Владимир
I wonder what they'll discuss at the Enterprise 2.0 conference: http://bit.ly/2o7uqN - Melle Gloerich

About to watch V with the wee pandas
Mrs The Santa Claus is looking good - RAPatton from iPod
Effective start so far - RAPatton from iPod
I hope the lizards eat Tyler; he bugs me and I'd Luke to see his mom have an axe to grind - RAPatton from iPod
The Rio visual is beautiful - RAPatton from iPod
Supergirl's name is in the credits - RAPatton from iPod
Alpha! Yeah - RAPatton from iPod
I like the inside of the ship a lot; that type of visual is enough to keep me watching - RAPatton from iPod
Supergirl V looks kind of odd - RAPatton from iPod
Alpha? Crisscrossing of fandoms is not allowed. - Araceli
Oh, we are cross crossing, we have Alpha, Supergirl, Mrs Santa Claus/Juliet and that kid from party of 5 not to mention everyone's favorite space companion - RAPatton from iPod
We need a V room. - Jason from iPhone
I really should not be paying attention to this as much as I am. I should wait for when I get to watch it. And then I think I may have to make a post like this as well. Yup, I think this is how I will review tv from now on. lol. - Araceli
This isn't a review so much as watching it with the ff community - RAPatton from iPod
Right, but when I write my reviews in my blog I do a commentary like you're doing. That's my review. ;) - Araceli
Ok; the men V's are creepy. The female ones are like hot vulcans - RAPatton from iPod
"I know the real reason why they are here" - RAPatton from iPod
Borrowing more from independence day, but also from Fringe - RAPatton from iPod
They have expanded the back story in a good way, but Juliet should require more proof - RAPatton from iPod
Yeah, I knew he was one - RAPatton from iPod
Oh, snap! - Jason from iPhone
Luke never knew how dangerous that trainer was - RAPatton from iPod
Fifth column has been introduced - RAPatton from iPod
The V's jackets are ugly, but the supreme leader dresses well - RAPatton from iPod
Liked the preview, and I think I saw Tori from BSG in it. So much better than flash forward so far, but it needs to have endings like the miniseries or lost and not sprawl forever like most tv - RAPatton from iPod
Just watched it. had never seen it before. I liked it. would watch it again. - Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
Not bad. I found it rushed and a little dull for the first half, but the last 10-15 minutes totally turned me around on it. Eager to see the next episode now. - Eoghann Irving
I think the sleeper cell angle is a good modernization of the Nazi references in the original V. - Eoghann Irving
it had a few of its emo moments, especially with respect to the annoying kid who will be joining the V's Hitler Youth, but we can hope that it may pay off one day. The larger conspiracy is interesting and has a lot of potential for storytelling and deus ex machinas - RAPatton

Marvel's Q3 Earnings Drop 60%: Enough To Make Mickey Sweat? - http://io9.com/5396255...
Marvel's Q3 Earnings Drop 60%: Enough To Make Mickey Sweat? - http://io9.com/5396255/marvels-q3-earnings-enough-to-make-mickey-sweat
This isn't that uncommon for Marvel. Part of it is just down to the cyclical movie revenue. The other part is that comics sales are in a decline at least partially due to the economic climate. People have less disposable income and monthly comics are expensive. A more regular movie release schedule and increased merchandising would address most of this. - Eoghann Irving
I must be single-handedly propping up Marvel's comic book sales then. Because I've never spent more money on comic books in my life. - Jason Huebel

Marvel's Q3 Earnings Drop 60%: Enough To Make Mickey Sweat?
"The company's net income dropped from $50.6 million to (a still impressive, let's face it) $20.4 million in Q3 of 2009, and it's not just down to the lack of a movie in theaters; earnings in every department, surprisingly including publishing, were down compared with the same period last year." - Eoghann Irving from Bookmarklet

Big V shakeup: Former Chuck producer takes over. - http://scifiwire.com/2009...
Big V shakeup: Former Chuck producer takes over.
What does this mean for V? A shakeup before it's even aired. And a hiatus after the first 4 episodes. Makes you wonder a bit. - Eoghann Irving from Bookmarklet
Sometimes those quick hiatuses work. I seem to recall ABC made Dirty Sexy Money take a hiatus after 4-5 episodes in its first season and I remember reading at the time that that was SOP at the network, to help them to focus. OTOH, ABC then substantially retooled DSM again between the first and second season, to the immense detriment of the show, so... - Andrew C
And early exec producer shakeups are usually a bad sign IMO. - Andrew C
Uh oh. And what does that mean for Chuck? Or has this guy been gone a while? - Jason Huebel
I always thought Josh Schwartz was the Chuck showrunner. - Andrew C
I think this guy was "an" executive producer on Chuck, not "the" producer. As far as I can tell Chuck is looking quite strong simply because of NBC's poor lineup this year. - Eoghann Irving

"We absolutely love the Motorola DROID. It’s a perfect storm between awesome hardware, great software, and a great network" - Louis Gray from Bookmarklet
My wife has already kinda resigned herself to the likelyhood that there will be a DROID being purchased in the near future. - Wirehead
Go Google go. - Mahmood Padura
Louis, Did you get your wife that new phone yet? This might be the one!! - Chris Myles
Chris, she just got a new MacBook and new printer. She's spoiled enough for now. - Louis Gray
I'm going to wait & see. I'd like to see one with multitouch, Snapdragon processor, and a better keyboard, preferably made by HTC - Rodfather
I was really looking to this handset... until I read the reviews; nothing positive has been about the camera, and for me, that's a deal breaker. The good news is, the problems *seem* to be software related rather than hardware, so maybe a fix will appear soon. - Andrew Terry
Sooner or later someone will release a smartphone that makes me want to buy it. I keep waiting. - Eoghann Irving
The same here Rodfather, I'm addicted to multitouch, no reason to go. - jcunwired
no multitouch... really. i'll try it out, but that could break the deal for me. still, my Pre may be getting nervous... - .LAG liked that
Louis, a wife spoiled with a Droid means husbands gets to help/play/review .. at least that's the logic I'm trying to use to justify OUR purchase. Although your wife does sound sufficiently spoiled.. for now !! - Chris Myles
There is a demo video floating around that shows a version of droid with multitouch. If they release that, and it's GSM, i'm probably buying. - dthree
The Droid in Europe has multitouch. - Rodfather
I /will/ be buying one on Friday. I /will/ pay the exorbitant disconnect fees from AT&T to get off of their network. I <3 Verizon Wireless and Google for giving me something to move to. - Jason Huebel
