I'm still pretty 'meh' about SGU. I find all of the characters unsympathetic and so far the story lines have been boring or predictable. The last episode "Water" was a step in the right direction but was absolutely forgettable. I'm hoping things get more interesting.

I tend to go with whatever PC Pro says: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/alist... and they've recommended a Samsung netbook (which doesn't appear to be available now but there are newer versions). I don't want to spend more than £300 machine (in fact a lot less would be good) but I would like to use it on the train and train station to work.

most netbooks are atom powered and i don't think they can run 7 well, XP runs slowly get one with higher processor

I'm tempted to pick up a netbook this year due to portability factor. If the netbook can run XP it ought to run at least as well or better on Windows 7.

Foursquare just started in Paris. I loaded it onto my iPhone on my way to Charles de Gaulle airport this morning, and managed to add Terminal 2 as a location (Terminal 1 existed already), but couldn't sign in there, probably because I hadn't uploaded a photo. Just got a call from an IT recruiter. Call me crazy, but I've decided to be as upfront and honest with them as possible - Recruiter "How are you at HTML and CSS?" Me "I can get the job done, but I'm not going to be the fastest and probably not the best." Last thing I want is to fudge my way into a job and fail miserably at it as a result.

If you know what you are not good at, it makes it easier to determine what you are good at, so a better match is possible. I once went on an interview for a PeopleSoft consulting job. Turned out they were looking for a DBA, not a business analyst/trainer/implementer. That's when I started being bluntly honest. Actually walked out of two interviews.

At this point I see deflating compensation as an unavoidable side effect of the current job market. But hell, expecting to get a degreed, certified, 7-10 year experienced tech genius for $12 an hour stateside is absurd regardless of where in the US you are.

I agree with your response: be honest and at the right moment tactfully bring up the discrepancy of the economy and the pay as an advantage to the company. I would rather hire a loyal dependable employee I can train and would accept a slower pace from than all the talent with an attitude.

Not really, Melanie, because I don't really do a lot with actual design. I've done way more reverse engineering in order to maintain sites and software that was already in existance. It's definitely a skill, but a hard skill to exhibit.

By "reverse engineering" Am I understanding correctly that you have planning and analysis skills? Do you have hard UML skills? Can you create Use Case Scenarios for site planning, architecture, and upgrade? It sounds like you already do some of that. If you had an ePortfolio you could demonstrate that with B/A scrnshts. And Business proposals for site upgrades using UML

I got my current job by interviewing for a different position in the company, finding out more about it and telling the hiring manager that I probably wasn't the candidate best suited to the job. About an hour later he called me back to arrange an interview with a different hiring manager for a different position. -- Can you provide case studies of business improvements from reverse engineering...this project saved the company $x and increased sales by x%?

Tina, that's a helpful break down. As you are talking with us you are getting the terminology to use. Do ask your older employer what he/she feels you did in helping the company with your skills. Ask them if they wouldn't mind giving you a number for your resume. They can only tell you no. :) They would have to be pretty hard-hearted to refuse you in this economy

Tina, it sounds as if you are an IT "free safety" and that is a very valuable skillset to have. You have the capability of wearing a number of "hats" it appears. You have crossover skills and are a quick study when it comes to existing applications.

That sounds about right. Like I said, it's very useful when needed but hard to communicate on paper. Combine that with the fact that the job before last was customer service training and you get a veritable jane of all trades. Again, hard to communicate on paper.

Often, your cover letter or personal connections are a better introduction than your c.v. itself. Have you thought of going on informal interviews at places you might like to work? Don't forget that you're interviewing potential employers as much as they interview you.

I caught Ep. 1, and I think the acting, while not great, provided a bit of relief. i tweeted about this before the show: saw the first V when I was a kid, thought it was cheesy, expected cheese in Hi-Def tonight...and got it. I'll continue watching a bit more to confirm...

I don't want to get in a sniping match with you, but I'm just not watching the same show. The acting was adequate to good in my view. The writing was imperfect but my issues were entirely with the speed they introduced stuff, and visually I really liked it. I really don't get the vitriol. There have been far worse network sci-fi shows in the last 5 years.

I liked it as well. The writing and acting was just fine with me. Of course I've always had a very high suspension of disbelief. Which is fine by me as it allows me to be able to enjoy a lot of programming that others don't seem to be able to. The only downside is dealing with the cancellations of a lot of shows I liked.

Your criticisms there don't really go to acting, but to scripting. The acting isn't Oscar worthy but by the standards of prime time network drama, it's up to par.

No, they go to the acting, all those people are always bad in their roles, and they had the same problems here. Maybe they measure up to dreck like Heroes or a Sci Fi network saturday night special, but your average CSI episode has better acting, and that's not a good thing.

Richard ...all great points. I really enjoy your takes on TV, a medium of which I'm a lifelong fan. The best point you bring up in this thread is that it was cheesy when it first aired, so why do it again now when the source material was weak to begin with. I have two hunches: 1) if I remember correctly, the original V miniseries was a huge ratings winner (so try to emulate that success) and 2) perhaps it was the pet project of an influential exec at the network... speculating.

I think this is why i don't like people who "network". Everything becomes so calculated it's fake. Connecting to connect may be aimless I suppose, but at least it's genuine. He's right in many ways, but it assumes the purpose of all interactions is to sell something.

I'm much more intrigued at Courier than the rumor of what Apple's Tablet will look like. Not least of which because I think that pen+fingers is an awesome input paradigm (and I can use it -- among other things -- as an infinite sketchbook). I hope that it's got good pressure sensitivity. And Stephen, they might be naming it after the more traditional meaning of courier as in messenger.

I have TiVo so I skip. Once in a while a commercial will catch my eye and we'll watch it but ... 90% of the time, 30 second skip mania.

Depends; if I'm not crunched for time (i.e., trying to get through as many shows as possible, or only have 45 minutes to watch a show), I'll often let them roll because it's less hassle than grabbing the remote and fastforwarding. Especially if I'm also doing stuff on the computer (which is most of the time), because then I can use the commercial break to give full attention to the computer briefly.

If a commercial seems interesting, I'll watch it once. If it's really compelling/funny/whatever, I may watch it multiple times. (I actually recorded one of those Vertigo Crime spots on BBC America to show my wife.) But once I've seen it, and I'm done with it, I never want to see it again. I have no interest in being brand-beaten.

Ha ha Ken, good point. I'm mostly a skipper, but some do catch my eye. I'll start shows late even if my schedule lines up with the broadcast just so I can skip. Some stations are making it more challenging by varying lengths of breaks, and putting short snippets within the breaks and after the credits.

Makes perfect sense. Wave is a technology that's still in development. If the bugs and quirks can be ironed out it's very suitable for Enterprise situations. A company like Novell is well placed to steer that development.

I think enterprises will "get" Wave. As far as business is concerned (other than marketing) Twitter, FF are toys. Wave is a potential business tool that can solve real problems. That is why most Twitter and FF fan boys don't get it.

it had a few of its emo moments, especially with respect to the annoying kid who will be joining the V's Hitler Youth, but we can hope that it may pay off one day. The larger conspiracy is interesting and has a lot of potential for storytelling and deus ex machinas

This isn't that uncommon for Marvel. Part of it is just down to the cyclical movie revenue. The other part is that comics sales are in a decline at least partially due to the economic climate. People have less disposable income and monthly comics are expensive. A more regular movie release schedule and increased merchandising would address most of this.

Sometimes those quick hiatuses work. I seem to recall ABC made Dirty Sexy Money take a hiatus after 4-5 episodes in its first season and I remember reading at the time that that was SOP at the network, to help them to focus. OTOH, ABC then substantially retooled DSM again between the first and second season, to the immense detriment of the show, so...

I think this guy was "an" executive producer on Chuck, not "the" producer. As far as I can tell Chuck is looking quite strong simply because of NBC's poor lineup this year.
