Aspiring authors routinely ask me to recommend an agent. This is more difficult than you might think. For starters, I have to be careful about playing favorites. Second, it’s often just as difficult to find an agent as a publisher. Many agents are not accepting clients.
- Ed Healy
Are we talking mission statements here?
- Kristian
Nope. I'm thinking conceptually about websites and what is important vs what is nice to have. Are analytics and SEO and optimization important? Or is content king? Or is something else a better foundation? Is 'what you do' more important than 'how you do it'?
- Ed Healy
Content is king, but optimization is important if you want people to get to your content. With regards to 'how I do it' vs. 'what I do', neither is more important than the other. They both play important parts and for different objectives toward the same goal: put out good content and reach out to the right audience. Analytics are nice as a measurement of reach, but not the driving factor.

"British troops are being encouraged by the Ministry of Defence to use Twitter and Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends." Paradox: last week the US Marine Corps banned troops' use of Twitter and other social networks.

I took my website down when I deployed to Iraq the first time. I was concerned I'd bee too tempted to share something that would break OPSEC. When I got there, though, every third soldier was on MySpace. During my second tour, Facebook was the outlet of choice. The internet is, indeed, one more front that every military has to consider.
- Ed Healy
"You probably use Google Analytics on a regular basis, for basic stats tracking the performance of your site. And, just like most GA users, you probably very rarely venture far from the comfort of the reports shown on the dashboard. That’s all the analytical information you need, you may be thinking … or is it?"

Thanks, Neville. There are tons of things about Google's services I know I don't know - but wish I did.

Wolfgang Baur, Ed Healy and Rone Barton discuss game design and dungeon mastering, with regular contributions from Skip Williams and Monte Cook.
- Ed Healy
Ed I agree these are 3 fantastic marketing podcasts! Have you tried out Ten Golden Rules Podcast? It is similar to the three you mentioned I'd appreciate your feedback. http://podcast.tengoldenrules.com
- Jay Berkowitz
Jay, I'm curious... Have you ever considered structuring your show so that you can syndicate it on radio stations?
- Ed Healy
Interesting. I wonder if the 1.4 million SL residents agree...
- Ed Healy
I love how these people dismiss things. Just bookmark their predictions, get back to them in a few years, then laugh at their face (or piss on their graves).
- Opensource Obscure
Thanks for sharing this - important to track. I was in a meeting with a venture capitalist who said the same. But in education, SL is GREAT!!
- Patricia F. Anderson
Thinking further, and reading the article, the claim on which the comment is based lacks research to back it up. Psych researchers in VW have noted that the more realistic the VW is, the creepier it seems to people - there seems to need to be a certain amount of distortion to aid in engagement in acceptance.

feedburner for podcast, wordpress.com stats for blog, google analytics for everything else
- David Van Vickle
The Feedburner plug-in for WordPress, combined with a CNAME change on the server level, seems to give me a fairly decent read on subscriptions. It's picking up everything - including iTunes.
- Ed Healy
I've been eyeballing the Seesmic WordPress plug-in. How's it working for you?
- Ed Healy
I'm using Seesmic via Disqus at 1FPS. Didn't realize there were even any other video commenting services. Are there?
- David Chartier
Dunno, David. That's part of the reason for my question. I'd love to offer video comments on a blog, but don't want to choose... "unwisely." How's Seesmic working for you?
- Ed Healy
I haven't had anyone use it on my blog yet, but I've loved using it on other's blogs. And it was super easy to install.
- Summer
video comments on other people's blog have been known to freeze my browser so I wouldn't implement this on my own yet.
- Andy Roberts
Video comments? I haven't even heard of them outside YouTube.
- Daniel Schildt
No i do not because i use disqus which supports seesmic which is terrible
- Mike Martin
Is there a method/plug-in for Blogger? I'd guess that Google would find a way, since they own both Blogger and Youtube...
- Joseph Z.
You'd think so but no. I hardly ever comment on Blogger blogs because the commenting mechanism and defaults are so useless.
- Andy Roberts
The thing that would put me off is the sheer amount of time it would take to review and respond to video feedback. Has anyone who uses it found this to be a problem?
- Winston
I allow for video replies through Disqus but I rarely get comments so it doesn't get much love!
- Joe Dawson
In the last year or two, has your email usage increased or decreased? I'm wondering if use of Social Media really does have an impact on email use. Does it?
My use of email is declining - and I certainly rely less on Google Alerts and other email feeds of information. I've moved virtually all of my project management work off of email now onto other platforms. http://tinyurl.com/64b3bv
- David Sim
Unchanged - most people I deal with professionally still use email - so I have no option.
- Craig Thomler
I use it a lot for business- it's about who you're talking to and how private it has to be and if you need attachments,etc- I network with industry peers via SM, but also some email- but my day to day biz and client interaction is still phone and email. So it's about who's using the comm channel and what functionality you need. I probably comm more overall tho, with SM, so the % of my comm that's email has probably decreased.
- Brian Carter
My email has vastly increased, and mostly just a lot more spam. I do a lot of real business via email, as not everything works on Twitter, Facebook, and other socnets. I am not sure how much of the spam increase is directly related to my getting accounts on so many socnets, but it seems like to some degree, it is.
- Cathryn Hrudicka
I think not only has email increased, so has the number of email accounts and other tools for inbound messages. At this point it continues to just push all limits of information overload.
- Tony
Email is my method of last resort. Synchronous communication, twitter / FF, phone, chat, etc is first in my book.
- Dean Terry
Decreased for communication with general people, work communication has stayed about same
- Justin Yost
I hate email, but it's still a necessary evil. If you asked me whether my attention of email has declined, the answer is yes. It still keeps coming in though..if anything it's worse than ever.
- Duncan Riley
SM hasn't killed my email. It has, though, killed my use of AIM/YIM/MSN/etc...
- Ed Healy
Could Friendfeed or Twitter ever become mainstream alternatives to email? A lot of the email I get is targetted at groups. We certainly have a mission - should we choose to accept it - to educate our clients, businesses and friends on the potential benefits of social media over email.
- David Sim
Technically it has increased, because of bacn. But in terms of actual use, it's probably decreased a little bit.
- Rubin Sfadj
Actually, I use email MORE now than before this social media phenomenon.
- ChaCha Fance
from Alert Thingy
i use email more because all the social networks require it for authentication and the services send me email when there's activity on my account (a peeve.) it's a flaw to have to know someone's email to invite them to a service
- rob zand
email is more equivalent to things like memos and faxes. SM is more like IM, but only for broad open conversations, maybe more of a replacement for group chat like IRC. as for my email consumption it has decreased, but it has been replaced by the phone and not SM, the growing trend in the market is to talk to others in the office not email, especially now that email is 'permanent' as is most of what is said in SM
- nick carrasco
decreased for keeping in touch increased for everything else!
- Darren Daz Cox
Declining for me and I love it. In fact, I'm in a bit of a spot now because all my friends use e-mail and I just can't stand reading email :) So now it's more of an intrusion than before.
- Daniele Rossi
the Creative Commons Attrib 3.0 license is intriguing... does that mean that it will attribute to me explicitly in replies?
- Glenn Batuyong
from twhirl
I blogged about it here: http://www.bwana.org/2008... Summary: It's open source, and creates a possible federated twitter. Two big reasons to keep it on the radar

Thanks for posting. It seems like this product launch is going to get some negative criticism from Apple fans that are accustomed to a very simple purchasing process. I don't think Apple has ever done a launch that had a downloadable PDF on "how to get ready", but I might be wrong. I wish they were not subsidizing the new iPhone so I could just walk in and buy it.

Other podcasts... listen to the promos and their recommendations. Especially their recommendations.
- Mike Wills
It depends on what genre you're looking for. There are sites that aggregate feeds on niche topics – http://www.boardgamepodcasts.com/ for example. If no such site exists, or is too hard to find… Go with Mike’s advice (promo’s on other shows) or ask around.
