"On July 17, Yao Ming created a profile on LinkedIn and asked users how playing sports has made a difference in their professional life. Through LinkedIn, he also hoped to promote the Yao Ming Foundation, which he established to help rebuild schools for the children devastated in China's earthquake. So far, he has received over 700 thoughtful answers. You still have a chance to respond, his question will be open until this Thursday, July 24th." - Oliver Ding

Yao Ming's question:Has participating in sports made an important difference in your professional life? "Playing basketball has allowed me to realize my dream of playing in the Olympics. It has also given me the ability to establish a foundation that can help people in need. Has participating in sports made an important difference in your professional life? To thank you for sharing your answers with me, five people who answer by midnight Saturday July 19 will be selected to win 20 raffle tickets each from The Yao Ming Foundation. The raffle winner and his/her guest get an all-expenses paid trip to the Beijing Olympics to see Team China play Team U.S.A.. They will also get to see a Houston Rockets game and meet with me afterwards. For more information on my foundation and the raffle go to http://www.theyaomingfoundatio...." - Oliver Ding

(1) Iridescent Clouds - When the sun is positioned at precisely the correct angle behind clouds water droplets in them diffract light away, creating an intense streaking effect. The colouring is, like a rainbow, caused by the differing wavelengths of the light – different wavelengths are diffracted to different degrees, altering the angle of diffraction and consequently the colour of the light as it is perceived. In this image cloud iridescence is accompanied by a sharply coloured ranbow. - Mitchell Tsai via Bookmarklet
(2) Moonbow - The combination of a low moon and dark sky often creates moonbows, essentially rainbows produced by the moon’s light. Appearing in the opposite end of the sky to the moon itself, they usually are seen as completely white due to their weak colouring, however long-exposure photography can capture the true colours, as in this example taken at Yosemite National Park, California. - Mitchell Tsai
(3) Circumhorizontal Arc - Also known as a ‘fire rainbow’ these streaks of colour are created when light is refracted through ice crystals in cirrus clouds. The phenomenon is especially rare as both the ice crystals and sun must be oriented in exact horizontal alignment to create the effect. This particularly dramatic example was captured in the sky over Spokane, WA, in 2006. - Mitchell Tsai
Woah - Awesome!! *great* - Ronald

(the last question at the end is over whether to just launch next week when the product is *ready* or hold the launch for a month to launch at the TechCrunch50 conference....if they want us that is which is still tbd. we're discussing. - Jason Goldberg
socialmedian is great fun - been a pretty smooth alpha too :) - Kate
definitely launch when you are ready. if there are issues, you can fix them before TC50. - Rob Diana
The tough part is that they (TC50) have this rule that you cannot have launched prior to their event. We're probably just going to go out next week when the product is ready as what we really need right now is to get more users touching it and giving us more feedback. Waiting is not a great idea. - Jason Goldberg
Thanks Kate! glad you are enjoying - Jason Goldberg
Well, you are going into public beta. That is not against the rules right? Technically, you already launched as a private alpha. I thought Twitter was a public beta when this happened to them, but I could be wrong. - Rob Diana
No, their rules forbid public betas. You must be private invite-only before their event. Which means we would have to keep it closed for another 6 weeks. - Jason Goldberg
You don't need TechCrunch50. Let them need you. - Louis Gray
Thanks Louis. My gut says we go next week as planned. - Jason Goldberg
Do it! If you beta, they will come. - Sarah Crisman
What is your biggest concern? Server load? The functionality from the user end seems very good. No problems for me yet. I am still exploring but i love it. Great work! - Scott Schang
How do i get an invite to socialmedian ? - ric johnson
Hey ric. You can go to http://www.socialmedian.com, click on "create an account" and use the alpha invite code "nearlybeta" to get going. There are about 40 invite codes avail. Feedback appreciated. Louis also has invites as he's noted. - Jason Goldberg
I will invite anybody to socialmedian who wants in. Just e-mail me at louisgray@mac.com. Same goes for Toluu. Bring on the e-mail. - Louis Gray
Jason - Social Median looks GREAT! I have been WAITING for this! - ric johnson
I say go for it when you're ready Jason. The alpha has been great, from my perspective and I think things will really take off w/more users. Go for it! - Sean Sharp
Loius - dun! - ric johnson
wow ric, that's awfully kind. work in progress. - Jason Goldberg
Assuming you can get your .mac email, right Louis? - Jason Carreira
Louis is Right: Make sure you do not need TC50, BUT my advice is to wait till then to launch it! TechCrunch IS powerful! - ric johnson
Historically these early-stage events (like Demo) have mostly been for benefit of startups that wouldn't otherwise have easy access to capital -- it gets them on the map with VC's. We don't really have that problem as we've turned away many VC offers thus far and have built socialmedian on a shoestring budget funded by myself, the washington post, and some leading angels. So, we'll probably just go beta next week and focus on the product and the userbase as we have been vs. the marketing events. - Jason Goldberg
TechCrunch is not just about VC! http://www.techmeme.com/lb - ric johnson
Hey ric, to be clear, not referring to whether to "launch" our beta on techcrunch, referring to whether to wait to launch it at their event in september for pre-launch co's. - Jason Goldberg
Josh Stein (Draper Fischer), a great all-around guy once told me to: put a stake in the ground as soon as you *can* so that you have something to move forward from (and look back on). - samantha
@samantha exactly. the product will be ready next week so we gotta go. product and users matters most. all this stuff takes time and you need to get going to learn and improve from. - Jason Goldberg
Jaoson, It's been a pleasure to watch Social Median develop. I've taken lots of notes and learned ton "watching" you work. GREAT communications throughout. I hope it's a hit for you and your investors. - JonathanGoodman
We've decided to go public beta next week. Will let everyone know when we nail down the exact date. Gotta get the product fully ready first. - Jason Goldberg

I gave up a long time ago. I hate the way it is packaged and presented. If ESPN controlled coverage and did it all live that would be a different story - RAPatton
Actually I am kind of interested in the technology of the presentation this year, what with NBC doing all that bleeding edge stuff by letting people watch online, watch multiple events using picture-in-picture, etc. Hoping they can pull it off and it won't be full of fail whale. - Karim
other than watching China jumping through hoops to make this thing work, Nope not a single damn has been offered. - Earl E Morningwood
We're big into the Olympics in this house and by 'we' I mean my wife. I do like gymnastics though so we've been watching the pre-qualifiers for the girls' team. Shawn Johnson is unbelievable. - Akiva Moskovitz
NBC online coverage is doing a high dive into a glass of water in center ring. Very brave. I wish them success. - Michael Markman
I am a supporter of the people of Tibet and reject China as an appropriate host for the Olympics on environmental and human rights grounds. The Olympics is an important event, especially to runners like me, but the organisation is deeply corrupt. - melmcbride
Yeah I could care less about the Olympics and i didn't even care about the trails which i could have gone too - Cecil Sandus
Agreed. The time difference doesn't help, but I couldn't care less about the Beijing Olympics. The IOC's "influence" has not forced the Chinese government to change anything important in that country. - Bill Sodeman
I'm giving a shit because that just means more HD content for me to watch. - Andrew Fielding via twhirl
The Olympics lost me years ago. My childhood fascination has given way to time-delayed, over-hyped, over commercialized apathy. - Douglas E. Welch via twhirl
did they start already? totally not on my radar. probably in large part because I now live beyond the grasp of NBC's hype machine. I've even given up spoofing my IP address so I can watch their shows on Hulu. - Jon Price
