Japan's new professional seducers - Times Online
September 1 at 7:46 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Kyoko, of course, is not the girl’s real name. She did not meet Mr A by chance and does not work for a design company, as he thinks. She is an agent paid to seduce him. She regularly texts the team from her mobile and has a couple of GPS devices in case they lose her. Shimizu is her bodyguard and will move in if there are problems. And the whole operation is paid for by Mr A’s wife, who gets an amply illustrated report every time an encounter takes place. The aim is to have Mr A fall so completely for Kyoko that he wants to marry her and asks for a divorce. Failing that, his wife will have a sizable dossier with evidence of infidelity to confront him with." - Dan Hsiao via Bookmarklet

Geeze, how screwed up is this? Can you not just serve divorce papers in Japan? The process must be a lot more complicated to justify all that... - Lindsay Donaghe
One word: entrapment. - Timothy Griffin
I don't know which way to go on this... I just don't know. - Michael W. May
They used to have these in America, too, before the days of no-fault divorce. They were called "co-respondents." The goal wasn't love, but sex, or at least the appearance of sex. The co-respondent would seduce a husband, take him off somewhere to have sex, a private investigator working for the wife would take pictures, and the co-respondent would testify in court. A key witness against Fatty Arbuckle was a professional co-respondent. - Mitch Wagner
the end of marriages in japan for sure. - krz9000
In Japan to get a divorce both partners just need to their seal on the papers. If one party disagrees it's a lengthy legal trudge through the system. There was a TV series like this once (starring London Boots) where they arranged a sting where a girl would try and pick up a guy and take him to a series of places with hidden cameras. When she finally got him home to "her apartment" the camera team and his girlfriend and the stars of the show would be waiting there. It was pretty amusing.. - Stuart Woodward
There's a bit more to the first case: "Mr A, who has been married for 20 years and has a son of 19 at university, is prone to violence and beats his wife. She confided in a male friend, whom she then fell for, but when she suggested divorce to Mr A, he simply hit her." - Alex Power

I, in turn, should have given credit to John Gruber of Daring Fireball, but his quick link didn't have the images in it, so I went to the original source. It'd be interesting if there was an 'attribution' or 'via' field in FF so people could give such credit without interrupting the flow. - Kevin Fox

"With a principle focus of creating a balance between maintaining a fragile habitat for wildlife and using natural resources wisely, Finca Bellavista aims to implement sustainable energy practices such as hydroelectric and solar power, while operating a full-fledged recycling center and a common garden area for the community. This might make it an eco-utopia for some, but for others it’s a possible solution for dovetailing conservation with development. As per Finca Bellavista’s guidelines on their website, treehouses in the community must be low-impact, stilt-built or arboreal dwellings that utilize a rainwater catch system to provide water for each unit. Waste that is generated is to be treated with “a cutting-edge technology found in biodigestors”. A “hydroelectric turbine system” will power the entire community. The power grid will run via a system of transformers and underground power cables installed along the horseshoe-shaped main access road that runs throughout the community, producing peak power o - Karen Padham Taylor via Bookmarklet

this is a phenomenon often lost on technical/science grad students for whom there is extensive scholarship and grant support. The burdens of school debt, and the ways in which young people's hands are then forced, is an embarrassing trend that is unique to our country. After 4 years of undergrad and 3 years of law school, I had no choice but to go work for the man in a big firm.
