Get some colour and come graphics in there. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Does that case come with the Kindle? Looks nice.
- Benjamin Golub
Pure pleather-like goodness: http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-.... The case has a clever little hook mechanism that makes it easy to pop the Kindle in and out, but you can definitely use the Kindle with the case on. Feels and looks more like a book with the case on, plus it protects the screen. They say it is real leather, which is a shame, as it feels like pleather and frankly I'd rather it was fake.
- DeWitt Clinton
Can you please check if it shows UTF-8 characters? Like my name?
- Vinay | विनय
I am starting to get pretty excited about those... was pretty skeptical at first, but that is going to be a game changer.
- Susan Beebe
@Michael - I had never heard of it. But I'll admit that, off all the things I wished my Kindle could do, fold in half was not one of them. And this may sound like heresy, but I'm not sure the high-level OS stack is the limiting factor in of ebook readers. Give me more surface area (Kindle DX size), a thinner bezel, higher resolution and maybe color, ditch the keyboard (okay, so maybe an touchscreen IME would help), a brushed aluminum body, and keep the thickness and weight constant, and you have an upgrade.
- DeWitt Clinton
Ugh. It's like 1993 all over again. Whoever can figure out how to make high resolution, eInk screens in color, not necessarily with a rapid refresh rate, will pretty much own this device space for a while.
- Bill Strathearn
This is clearly not my cat. If this was my cat he's have one arm shoved down into the printer trying to tear up all the internal whirling bits with his bare claws.
- Soup
Too Funny! Reminds me of the San Mateo Cat Shelter where one of the cats loves to sleep on top of the laster printer where the paper comes out...
- Greg Lato
1600+ to beat the FFundercats live chat thread. I think with this real time now on all threads we're going to see some truly epic comment numbers.
- Simon Wicks
Ivan, no the picture speaks for itself. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Petr, I have no idea what you mean, but thank you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..
- Petr Buben
there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]
- Petr Buben
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Bloody marvelous, Kol. Wish I could like it again... too cute (and help u to 500 likes).
- Roberto Bonini
I couldn't believe it when I logged on from the morning over posting it and saw it was at something 200 likes! You all have a strange fetish with cats and fax machines, hehe. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Am I the only one who saw this and their first thought was - My goodness did someone break that cats neck? It still freaks me out a little
- Steve C
Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
They fax much better if you flatten them first. What?
- Kevin Pedraja
So we can put this post to rest now. :-) 505 likes final count, wow! :-D Good night all!
- Kol Tregaskes
My like is the last one so far :) - 509 afaik
- getalifejerk
did 3 people really un-like this? now at 506. wtf (edit: uh, oh, yeah, me and 2 + 506 others makes 509. dammit, jim, i'm an artist, not a mathematician)
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
One of the best funny cat pictures I've seen! :-)

Kristian, it appears to be. Hehe, John.

It's really only social convention which regards it as inappropriate, same with Xeroxing it, like one does with their b__tocks. Wait are we still talking about cats cats here or...
- sofarsoShawn
OMGosh 700+ likes now!! LOL. Thank you all 702 of you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
That picture of me is unfair. I was demonstrating how NOT to do a pushup!
- Paul Buchheit
It appears as though everything was funny to me. Also, in the videos, my response time seems a little slow. I must have been tired, which is exactly why I ordered the espresso martini :)
- Ross Miller
You should've taken pictures of the longer-term affects of the 3 martini lunch (e.g. Paul passed out on the couch).
- April Buchheit
Ahh, there it is! I guess Friendfeed has made me lazy -- 9 out of 10 times I don't bother to click on links anymore, I figured that all I need to know is right on the post or in the comments. :)
- April Buchheit
Yeah, it's annoying how SmugMug doesn't send along all the images. The pictures at the end of Paul "sleeping productively" are some of the best :)

so...you have a shrink-ray and you're all gonna fit in there?!? 'Cos I would hold out for something a little more likely to pass building regs if I were you!

"There is so much hugging at Pascack Hills High School in Montvale, N.J., that students have broken down the hugs by type: There is the basic friend hug, probably the most popular, and the bear hug, of course. But now there is also the bear claw, when a boy embraces a girl awkwardly with his elbows poking out. There is the hug that starts with a high-five, then moves into a fist bump, followed by a slap on the back and an embrace. There’s the shake and lean; the hug from behind; and, the newest addition, the triple — any combination of three girls and boys hugging at once... A measure of how rapidly the ritual is spreading is that some students complain of peer pressure to hug to fit in. And schools from Hillsdale, N.J., to Bend, Ore., wary in a litigious era about sexual harassment or improper touching — or citing hallway clogging and late arrivals to class — have banned hugging or imposed a three-second rule."

Hugs are awesome. Unless they are coming from creepy people. Generally, though, they are awesome.
- Type Micah
Only in America it occurs to schools to ban hugging or impose an N-second rule. "“Touching and physical contact is very dangerous territory,” said Noreen Hajinlian, the principal of George G. White School, a junior high school in Hillsdale, N.J., who banned hugging two years ago. “It was needless hugging — they are in the hallways before they go to class. It wasn’t a greeting. It was happening all day.”
- ana
People are more physical nowadays. I appreciate this. Especially with the LADIES.
- Mike Nayyar
This hugging is a good thing, with electronic communication being the norm.
- Rick Cogley
the breakdown is very interesting. for us, growing up, it was kisses. affection amongst hard rocks was common too, this still exists today, involving complicated handshakes and hugs.
- Carlos Ayala
I am going to hug the entire FriendFeed team tomorrow. Bret can monitor the second counts.
- Louis Gray
Growing up in Japan, hugging didn't come natural to me. I can't remember my first hug, but I did like a girl's bosoms pressing against me. Those were the days!
- Hiro Asari
@Hiro, lol. :-) Now in Japan, there's even groups that offer "free hugs" on the streetcorner. Japan has changed a lot in the 22 years since I came...
- Rick Cogley
@ana, yeah, only in America. I am American, but I always wonder why people are so uptight about that sort of thing. 3-seconds... jeez.
- Rick Cogley
@Rick I believe you, but I want to see the pics of these people (and the reaction of the passersby).
- Hiro Asari
@Hiro - yeah, I've only seen them once for real, and a couple times in the paper. Peoples' reaction would be interesting yes.
- Rick Cogley
God, only in an American public high school could they turn a perfectly reasonable and healthy interaction into a cause for alarm. We Americans *need* a little more contact, if you ask me.
- Joel Webber
This was pretty common amongst a subset of people when I was in high school in Australia (mid-90s), along with cheek-kissing. It was great.
- Glen Murphy
Hugging is a good thing. It should be encouraged. You know, humans that touch one another, speak to one another, and that generally have social interaction, are happy humans. Deal with issues on a case by case basis and don't make these knee jerk blanket policies
- Chris Gardner
OK, so this is an interesting phenomenon but I found it mighty weird that this story was on the front page, below the fold, of the print edition. The jump? It was to page A3. I'm all for quirky stories on the front page; it diversifies the page and reaches a broader audience. But....
- Christopher Chung
So we are conservative, don't we? To me, only the most friendly will I give my hugs. I could expect the gap between us and our children.

"Last Monday, May 25th, the annual Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake was held near Gloucester, England. In a tradition that dates back at least 200 years, possibly much longer, groups of fearless competitors chase an 8 pound (3.5 kg) round of Double Gloucester Cheese down an extremely steep and uneven hill, with a 1:1 gradient in some parts. Thousands of spectators gather to watch the five downhill and four uphill races, and to celebrate the winners and console the losers afterward. Injuries such as broken bones and concussions are commonplace, but the event continues to grow in popularity. The winner of each race is awarded the delicious round of cheese they were chasing. Thanks for the link Steve! Can we say insanity? I do like a lot of the costumes, and others scare me a lot!!!! I say just go buy the cheese!

Is that guy naked?! I hope the ground is smooth, for his sake
- Chris Lamprecht
Chris, other photos/video show that he might have a g-string type thing on. However I don't see that as enough cover or something like this. If I was ever crazy enough to attempt this I would be going down in full hockey goalie gear!!
- Rachel Lea Fox
In ancient Rome, the men used to chase cheese rolls down from the Acropolis wearing only a thin coating of olive oil. OK, not really, but now it's on the Internet so it's half way to being true.

"When geologists were drilling for gas, 35 years ago, they suddenly found an underground cavern [...] None dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas, so they ignited it so that no poisonous gas could come out of the hole, and since then, it has been burning."

"A large, almost perfectly circular hole approximately one quarter of a mile (0.4 km) across, it’s one of the most astounding dive sites to be found anywhere on earth. Inside this hole, the water is 480 feet (145 m) deep"
- Steven Bryden
Incredible dive. My husband and son did the dive with sharks swimming around them between the stalagmites and stalactites. I snorkeled on the rim with Kaianne. We had sharks swim under us as the guides threw chum in the water 20 feet away. A dive and snorkel that is well recommended.

We were in Belize for a day; not enough time to visit the Great Blue Hole but I really wanted to see it.

A comparison of freeway ramp rendering on various online mapping sites shows that it's a tricky problem, and at least at the time of this post (2006), Google had the best rendering. I looked at Live and Yahoo again today and it still doesn't match what Google had in 2006.

His own company's map demo (http://maps.cartifact.com/) is pretty slick, with the labelled building outlines. No way to link to a particular view, but zooming in on that 10-110 intersection is nice.

It's always kind of surprised me to not see much commentary on the quality of map rendering in these apps. It was the first thing that struck me about Google Maps when they released (especially compared to MapQuest, which at the time looked like it had been rendered on my old C64).
- Joel Webber
He fails to mention this, but Google's is the only one on that list that shows the ramp directionality. I would think that might be good information to have :)
