Toast that comes out of the toaster was clearly destined to become toast because that is what it has become. We cannot look at a piece of bread and know that it was meant to be toast until it has become toast but once it has become toast we can say, 'Ah, yes, this slice of bread has become toast and thus it clearly has existed in a pre-toasted state up until now.' And thus: toast goes in the toaster.

This flies in the face of Schroedinger's Toast Theory which suggests that bread placed into a toaster exists both in a toasted and untoasted state that can not be determined until the damn thing pops up. It's one of the most delicious smelling theory in all of science.

:-D But Akiva, if I'm following you correctly, you might as well say excrement comes out of the toaster, because the toast "was clearly destined" to be eaten and subsequently excreted. You could go a step farther and say the nitrogen from the excrement goes into the ground, where it is taken up by more wheat, to make more toast, to become more excrement. Thus the universe is excrement in a constant state of becoming itself.

It doesn't matter when the videos were made - much like it doesn't matter when a scandal arises over someone else's past behavior - like Obama's pastor & McCain's association w/ Gov. Williams. The behavior may be in the past - but the "guilt by association" is always in the present. Verizon clearly decided not to get behind Loren in this. Sometimes, your past does come back to haunt you. Even if it's not 'fair'.

Don't be so flip about this! It is a serious challenge for me to change the toilet paper roll. a) They seal those things in carbonite b) I can never tell which is the right or left side and c) I am inept at spring-loaded wall accessories. I have dents in my wall from unintended dowel launches.

Seriuosly, not picking up a cigarette is SO hard. I'm looking into aides. I know studies show after three days, or seven days, or whatever, means you're no longer addicted, but it is SO not. I've been smoking 10+ years and now that I stopped, I realized how much of my daily routine, as well as emotions were tied into nicotine....

I haven't had a ciggie in almost a year and i still get the cravings, but nowhere near as bad. The gum does help a bit, but it's mostly pure stubborness that does it. If you can talk yourself into having a ciggie, you can talk yourself out of it.

This sounds kind of weird but I find it much easier to "maintain friendships" online than off, simply because of the lack of available time to meet with people in meatspace. FF (and other networks) gives me the ability to socialize when it's convenient for me. And the fact that I can participate in a conversation not in real time is also convenient. I am only anti-meatspace-social for lack of free time.

Just rants... iPhone is still way more usable than Windows Mobile and I've used both.

I have had days where I can no longer send emails from my iphone. Reboots don't make it better. Email is the most important thing on my phone , if that doesn't work I could just go back to SMS.

was this the case with the first iphone? is it due to all the new apps that have been released, which may be causing bugs? if it is, then it's not really the operating system, but the software developer

I have the same original iphone and this started happening when I upgraded to the 2.0 OS. Even if the apps are at fault in someway, which I kinda doubt, it is Apple's responsibility to make sure that the core functionality continues to be reliable.

the issue seems to be a little of both - the new firmware, and 3rd party apps.. the article mentions problems even with the built in Safari browser crashing.

My iPhone 3G is stable, but the Safari browser crashes sometimes with to many pages open at the same time.

Tim: For me stability = usability. If it crashes (i.e. is unstable) then you can't use it. I had a problem when email didn't come in at all over night one night. I shut the iPhone off and turned it on -- problem solved. Granted apps didn't crash as he describes in Windows Mobile, but you also can't do the same kind of web browsing using Pocket IE in Windows Mobile that you can do in Safari on an iPHone. It's not an apples to apples comparison :)
