Robert. Maybe you know, but there is a company in Washington building a space elevator. They calculate that 10 square miles of solar pannels in unshilded space will provide the 5 petawatts that the planet uses right now. And the space elevator will make it so we can get that much into orbit. The future looks bright.

I feel like alternative fuels and electric vehicles aren't the way to go yet. They are just as polluting to the environment (if not more so) to build as gas vehicles. There are technologies now that make gasoline engines near-zero emissions. If we could just break the US of our obsession with oversized, gas guzzling vehicles, we may just turn things around. - Jason Huebel

We're going to need a lot of effort across the variety of ways to replace oil as it wanes as our cheap solution to nearly every problem. We'll have to find ways to create limited portable energy for transportation, ways to generate lots of power at fixed sites (power plants, personal power), ways to fertilize our crops, ways to create cheap plastic-like objects. - Eric Skiff
