Wonderful. The Media Temple database server just crashed and screwed up my site (AGAIN). Is there any web hosting company out there that knows what they're doing?
Slicehost. But then again, you need to know what you're doing to use them. If you are comfortable setting up your own server then I'd highly recommend them. There are plenty of instructions on http://articles.slicehost.com/ for everything
- Benjamin Golub
It really depends on what type of hosting you're looking for (and how much you're willing to pay). For VPSes, I've been using Byetmark in the UK for years. For dedicated, colo, and other hardcore things, I use Rackspace. Both are really stellar.
- Mark Trapp
Ben, I need to keep Slicehost in mind. It sounds really good. Only a couple of things that keep me away from signing up right now: time, because of the extra layer of overhead that comes with managing the server myself, and bandwidth, which isn't that much. Mark, I heard great things about Rackspace, but they're beyond my price point right now. I've been resisting the jump to $50/month for hosting (for a VPS), but I may need to make it at some point in the near future.

Yahoo killed my database. No defaults for automatic backup.

Raoul: there is some overhead (basically I just subscribe to the Ubuntu security mailing list and whenever I get an email I update my server). But bandwidth is included in the price so that shouldn't be a concern. Slicehost is only $20 which gets you a VPS that is more than capable of handling the Digg effect.
- Benjamin Golub
Benjamin, your pitch has got me reconsidering some of my VPS choices. Have you had any issues with downtime (caused by Slicehost, not your VPS)? How long have you been using Slicehost?
- Mark Trapp
Ben, that's true, but there'd be the setup and config of Apache as well, not to mention that Ubuntu can be a pain in the rear when it comes to networking.
- Raoul Pop
For VPS I love Johncompanies.com... If you want a more managed environment check out Contegix, who provides excellent service.
- Jason Carreira
Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone!

Yes. And I agree with @briansullivan but also because it's less wasteful. There is generally no benefit to bottled water, only plastic waste and money spent.

I do not agree with Brian Sullivan(?) There has been poisin reports of nuts throwing it into the water. But thats just some of the cleanest water in the U.S.

Penn and Teller did a whole show about this on Showtime. Tap water is regulated by thousands of EPA agents. Bottled, FDA one guy.
- Bob Hires
Just got back from camping in Italy - they have taps all over the place in towns to get water. Why don't more countries do this?
- Rich
Bottled water costs more than gasoline. That's a bit screwed up...
- Andrew Leyden
for sure, and drink it only if you are in the desert with no other water source to choose from. Drinker beware!
- Jeremy Campbell
from twhirl
Yes. I do. But I go ahead and drink it. Beat back the dark gremlins in your head Kevin!
- AJ Kohn
yes in india, my face turned white and the host noticed. He then shouted something to the "boy" standing in the corner and the water bottles in the room were replaced with ones that went 'click'

Do what The Queen does, use a British Berkefeld water filter. It can filter out just about anything evil. http://www.jamesfilter.com/
- klaatu
Yeah. Just click the Hide link and then you can set the options to always hide posts of friends-of-friends
- Grant Gochnauer
It only show you things that your friends liked or commented on. This is the core function of ff so you don't want to turn it off. If you're seeing too much junk, you have the wrong friends :)
- Doug Brooks
Next question -- does Friend Feed have a way to respond directly to someone or start a conversation with a specific person?
- Grant Gochnauer
@Grant, you can always comment. There's no "direct message", though.
- Paul Reynolds
@Paul Reynolds I thought that was the case. However if you comment or post something, the person you want to contact might not ever know if they aren't your friend yet :D.. @Paul Buchheit -- maybe a new feature? :D
- Grant Gochnauer
I like the friends-of-friends, my issue is that certain friends add all their followers, then I end up with huge list of random people that my friends don't actually know (making FF less useful as a utility for me).. does that make sense?
- Kevin Rose
the whole point is that you are only seeing posts that your current friends are liking or commenting on. The logic being that your friends are only recommending items of interest for you. It's also a great way to discover other interesting feeds. If you are consistently seeing bad articles try unsubscribing or hiding specific people that are providing the bad content.
- Doug Brooks
Noob! Click hide. It works for me. Welcome to the dark side, Mr.Rose.
- Mike Lewis
Took me a little digging to figure it out too... Robert Scoble has way to many friends who like to post.
- Keith Rowland
I'm a victim of Scoble's friends flooding my FriendFeed. Going to take awhile to get used to this site.
- Sam Houston
Kevin we are only separated by 6 or 7 degrees. But as the above posters suggest, dump some of the big time emitters of material.
- iSteeve
Nice clicked on hide and that did it for me. That sht was bugging me.
- nick
I unsub'd Scoble for precisely that reason, and F became much more usable. Subscribing to someone on Friendfeed isn't a matter of establishing a contact... it's picking an information editor and peer.
- Roger Benningfield
I wouldn't mind seeing this wither Kevin - Think a reshare to the Feedback group would be good. It's not the friends of friends that really bugs me. It's the feeds that are being attached to them (IE: If I want 'NewsJunk', I'll subscribe.)
- Charlie Anzman
You can always view someone's home page & discussion page (even if you don't subscribe), so subscribing on FriendFeed is more of a "if you need to see stuff as-soon-as-it-happens..."
- Mitchell Tsai
It'd be amusing to be able to see 'blocked-by-a-friend' posts. It'd be full of people in Scoble's timeout. Oh, and plenty of IgorTheTroll.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I was getting to the point of wanting this turned off. Thanks for asking the questions as I was getting fed up with Friend of Friends.
