i can do that too. don't anger the access services librarian.

are you talking about the CIA, FBI, NSA, HLS consultants trying to social engineer society a la Amerika? ;-) they have to make sure information is apple pie and chevrolet compliant. <wink>

This is my favorite book from one of my favorite authors. I also recommend Wild Sheep Chase and the Wind Up Bird Chronicles from Murakami as well.

"Though gelato, that smooth and flavorful Italian ice cream, is not a novelty in the United States, it has struggled to gain a foothold. Many consumers were turned off by too many bad Americanized versions and that, in turn, turned off many would-be entrepreneurs.Lately, however, gelato seems to be catching on, joining artisanal coffee, cheese and wine in catching the fancy of food lovers. With less than half the butterfat of regular ice cream, gelato is less fattening and healthier, and its dense, rich flavor and smooth texture can be highly addictive."

I tend to bump into their seat A LOT, and make excessive use of the tray table; up, down, up, down, up, down, etc.
- Dave Roth
As much as I would LOVE to use this... I never could. I also can't recline my seat. Being 6'4", I'm kinda sensitive to the banged knees and crushed laptop results. I usually just lean forward and ask them not to recline. But I secretly wish I could just be passive aggressive. Damn manners!

"According to the study, the average person is now connected by just three degrees within a shared “interest” or social group instead of six. In fact, it found that people are usually a part of three main networks: family, friendship, and work."

"The swimming pool was their first real request, Mr. Trainor said, and since they were into competitive swimming and he “knew it wouldn’t have to be a suburban-style pool for people to lounge around all day,” he embraced it as a challenge. The resulting design, built in 2005, set a minimalist, carved-concrete, solar-heated pool almost seamlessly into the meadow, where it is surrounded by seasonal wildflowers and native grasses (planted mainly with seeds collected from the site before construction began) and reflects the surrounding hills like a ground-level mirror. Three years later, the plantings have begun to mature, restoring the property to something close to its original state and providing its weekender owners with low-maintenance natural beauty."

"Then her boyfriend bought himself a natural wood ukulele. She started strumming it, and found it easy to play with little training. Within a month Ms. Kwok had fulfilled a childhood desire to own a pink instrument, acquiring a ukulele in that color and adding it to her act. Her corny jokes (“I don’t understand why they call it lubricant. It should be lubri-can.”) worked better when she strummed. By November, NBC was flying her to Burbank, Calif., to perform for casting directors at a talent showcase. She has since quit her job and is now auditioning for sitcoms and movie parts. “The ukulele is a happy instrument,” she said last week. “People’s eyes light up when I step up with it.”"

That was a pleasant surprise. I had inquiries about this photo a few weeks ago and put it up for sale (prints). I didn't hear back when I responded with that as an option I wasn't really expecting someone to buy a print but someone did! A 20x30 of it. I'm not even sure if it was the people who inquired either... I've never sold a photo before. That's cool.

Anthony Citrano suggested it: http://friendfeed.com/e... So far, so good experience. I am thinking about putting some more out there. I used the free trial for the "real" seller account.

From Tuvie.com: "Nulla is one way of saying “nothing” in Italian. Bradford Waugh named it that way for lack of central hubs or chain-drive, giving it a very minimal visual weight. “Ditch that fancy car and buy a stylish bicycle”, this is what you are going to say once you have this one with you. "

Harvard physicist Kevin Black investigates rumors that the particle accelerator may, in fact, soon be shut down—by ripples from the future. - http://fqxi.org/communi...
"The authors of this paper claim to show that other terms can be added to the quantum mechanical action that are consistent with current theory and experiment. However, some of these possible terms include conditions in the future that need to be taken into account and summed over. That is to say, what happens in the future could (according to this paper) affect what happens in the present. Why the LHC? The authors argue that these sorts of time-violating interactions could be associated with whatever new particles we create at the LHC. For example, the production of a large number of Higgs particles in the future could have a backwards-in-time causal effect on the machine that produced them, stopping the machine from ever running."

I've been thinking about this issue of the future effecting the past for some time. I think it's true, but impossible to prove. I even wrote a blog post about it, but I'm not sure if anyone understood: http://paulbuchheit.blogspot.com/2007...
- Paul Buchheit
This would account for the observer bringing the universe into existence, even though the creation of the universe pre-dates the observer.
- Bret Treasure
It seems like there are some people working on making the future effecting the present possible to prove. Impossible is such a strong word.
- Clare Dibble
Really? There are so many things that have been impossible to prove for so long! But that might not be the same impossible you're thinking of.

so what's the period of time involved here? are we dealing in units of Planck time? do Higgs bosons show up a couple of picoseconds at the target before they are supposed to? Or is the LHC spewing Higgs NOW, before it has been turned on, before it is even finished? What if some CERN janitor holds up a bucket to the LHC, collects all the Higgs bosons before it has even been turned on, and wins the Nobel Prize?
- Karim
Very cool! Science fiction meets real life...
- Mitchell Tsai
also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki.... now i'm wondering if what the janitor is collecting in his bucket is not Higgs bosons, but rather *anti-Higgs* moving *backwards* in time. if mass is a result of Higgs, then does anti-mass and anti-gravity come from an anti-Higgs field? ;-)

lotsa of .swf to ipod converters ,, not free though !
- johnpiercy
Oh wow, thanks Mike! fotographic: I actually tried with an online converter (free) http://media-convert.com/ followed instructions from googling (my results: http://www.google.com/search...)... fortunately, I have a friend who does video editing, who offered to convert it to hi-q for me. She uses Snap-X Pro, I think? (Not free)

just tried Jing.. it's really great, but a 5 minute time limit :(
- Tim Hoeck
It kept crashing on me, like crazy. Took me like 2 hours to record that ONE clip LOL! Btw, please watch on Youtube since the embedded video doesn't show the annotations, plus it's low quality! Thank you :)
- Mona Nomura
thanks @mona .. I have Snaps Pro and IshowU , I'll try the free mediaconvert.com
- johnpiercy
fotographic: If you have Snaps Pro, then record the clip play back from Jing, and when saving the file, compress to mp4, save, then directly upload to youtube! :)
- Mona Nomura
Or you can just record directly from Snapz Pro X.
- Andrew Trinh
Totally, but in the video I mentioned JingProject, since I didn't have the software (yet) :)

Dive Into Python is great. You can read it online (for free) if you'd like, or see how you like it before buying a printed copy.
- DGentry
If you are not able to follow Drive Into Python at first then give A Byte of Python(http://www.ibiblio.org/g2swap...) a try and then continue with Drive Into Python.

I grabbed Learning Python and it seemed pretty decent to me. Dive Into Python, to my untrained eyes, seemed dated?

Lots of good online material for Pyhton, I picked up an O'Reilly pocket reference to supplement when I was exploring Python a year ago.

I'm thinking of learning Python as well. IronPython got me thinking along those lines.
- Roberto Bonini
thanks everyone for the recommendations!
- Rob Diana
@Jason, why do you find Python annoying?
- Rob Diana
Indentation being significant? "self" references needed? The indentation one alone made things like passing multi-line code blocks incredibly cumbersome... They basically painted themselves into a corner then started rationalizing about how the corner was really the best place to be anyway.
- Jason Carreira
I was hoping you would not bring up indentation :)
- Rob Diana
I recently decided to take a look at Python as well and it's been fun and interesting. I picked up a copy of O'Reilly's Learning Python as it seemed fairly current and also picked up a Django book. I've been coding for a while as well and I had some of the same feelings Jason's describing. Being explicit with 'self' seemed a bit strange, and I also was bitten a few times so far with the indentation (though I blame my actual problems with that more on the IDE I was using).

For me it was/is: Learning Python, Core Python Programming (and Wesley's course), Rapid Web Applications with TurboGears, and Google Search...
