The big question is if Avatar is ham-handed or ham-fisted.
ham-hammy? - esther

eating a panini that i'm pretty sure is reducing my life expectancy by 3%.
those are the only kind worth eating! - esther

Assholes hate cold weather.
i guess i'm an asshole, but i'm not sorry! just today i realized that i hate wearing layers because it impedes my mobility =T - esther
i love bundling up in layers in the cold! however, i don't like that my bike becomes useless for months at a stretch. talk about impeded mobility. - nate beaty
One thing cold weather is good for: feeling all warm and snuggly underneath piles of blankets! But apart from that: meh! - esther from iPhone

And now for something completely different: Ikea run for dinner.
Meatballs and soft serve ice cream... - Bryan Landers from iPhone
There's Ice Cream!? I brought some frozen meatballs home, so maybe we'll have to do that at home. - Kris Kowal
Oh yes, and soft serve is nice treat after the Ikea experience before heading out into a hot Los Angeles afternoon...the only drawback I remember is that you have to pony up for bags if bought stuff so you aren't trying to hold the melting ice cream in the same hand as the coat hangers, milk frother, patterned napkins, sheepskin rug, and assorted cookware like some kind of comedy sketch! - Bryan Landers
Bryan is a pro! :) I love the soft serve too, and my dad's a sucker for the cinnamon rolls - esther from iPhone

Re: Dorsey's Square, I thought the next move would be we just use our phones as payment devices. Plastic cards are just extra items to tote.
I agree, don't people in Japan already do that sort of thing? But it seems like it'd be a bigger convenience for sellers, who don't need to go thru all the rigmarole of setting up a payment gateway - esther from iPhone
I like everything about it except the hardware and cards. I want the system to just require only the phones! The thing about being easier for merchants - what merchant that thinks it's too much hassle to get setup with a gateway is going to buy a fancy new swiper and an iPod touch or whatever? And for those who don't need the swiper, how is this different from PayPal/Amazon/Google? No plastic required. - Bryan Landers from iPhone
Glad u want phone payments, too, btw ;) - Bryan Landers from iPhone

nobody mentions Buy Nothing Day anymore. - nate beaty
My guess is In this economy, every other day has been Buy Nothing Day for most people - esther from iPhone
I hasten to add that I don't think the practice of buying crap is thus more justified this year, jus saying the mindset may be a little different this year: more hunger for deals, smaller likelihood of overindulgent spending - esther from iPhone
i don't think we're going towards that mindset at all, buying useless things beyond your means is core to The American Way! (typed on my 13" mbp, er...) - nate beaty

i hate it when people have screencasts/video tutorials without a text transcript. it just makes me hate them.
good point. i'll try to remember that. - Bryan Landers
I think what people forget is that three seconds in video time is forever. A six-minute tutorial? Fuggetaboutit! - esther from iPhone

Wow, if a javascript confirm() won't believe you, WHO WILL??? - Micah Wittman
Yup, and 1 chance to pick a username?! Pity the person who makes a typo at this moment. Anytime you resort to this type of language and interaction in your messaging, it should be taken as an indication that your UX has gone crapola. - Bryan Landers
myspace has long been my go-to for what NOT to do in UX. - nate beaty
W/ apologies to anyone who works for them: if you're using myspace, that's a fail =P - esther from iPhone
i said essentially the same thing to a friend the other day, his response: "if you're a band, what else is there?" muxtape.com came to mind, but he's right, it's come down to band pages and It's Too Painful To Migrate Elsewhere users. - nate beaty
Aha. Now this conversation is getting interesting. So, in answer to, "if you're a band, what else is there?" I have too long an answer, but the short version is: EVERYWHERE! I recently helped 2 musician friends with their own destination sites/hubs (artist_name_dot_com), each of which used no less than 5 other web services (Twitter, Flickr, ArtistData, Facebook, MySpace, Vimeo,... more... - Bryan Landers
that sounds like a band that makes money and has some PR muscle! either that or they know a webgeek or are tech-savvy themselves. but you're right, getting yourself out there these days requires one foot in many services. - nate beaty

Doing a slidesprint before the Django meetup so I'll a) have something to share b) will only only partially look like an idiot
curious to hear what you were planning to share. i'm a little bummed i didn't catch you until the very end. i'll put together a blog post re: django project best practices and loop you in on that soon. cheers! - Bryan Landers
i second bryan - hope you will present next time! - esther
I was going to talk about Python package management and specifically using virtualenv and pip. It's a bit of a broad subject to try to hastily cram into a few slides and I wasn't sure what skill levels people would be at. I'm glad I waited because I think adding a few visuals would help out. Next time :) Thanks for the encouragement! - Brian Luft
...also for reminding me I have a friendfeed account. - Brian Luft
+1 to talk about virtualenv and pip. Pinax uses them extensively, and sometimes people are confused about why it installs everything even Django, and where it installs it. - Andrew Kurinnyi
I hope you guys stick around with me on FriendFeed a bit longer (post-Facebook acquisition). There's just a handful of folks I interact with over here, but the conversation and content discovery is great. Follow http://friendfeed.com/ericflo for more Django stuffs and FF activity ;) - Bryan Landers

@greylurk I agree. Also, email is not secure. So, no email, no fax, what then? Drop.io? Post PDF to server?

are there any LA-based Wordpress people out there looking for a freelance gig? lemme know
hey, lmk if you get any responses. one of my goals, now that i'm done with that startup gig, is to build out my referral network so i actually have peeps to throw work at when i can't do it ;) - Bryan Landers
i got one response! from a stranger in portland. hilarious! - esther
nate beaty
@espelina i think i threw my back out cringing so many times during that episode of mad men. lots of "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" moments.
That episode was Uncomfortable. - esther from iPhone
agreed. it's fascinating to me that i love watching a show where so many of the characters do things that drive me crazy. - nate beaty
nate beaty
latest mad men so good. such a monumentally different pace than anything else on tv.
ITA: the show gets better and better - esther
although, I think the lawnmower one is still my favorite from this season - esther
oh man, that moment was unbelievable. i was NOT expecting it at all. rare to induce simultaneous cover-mouth-in-horror alongside laughing-until-stomach-hurts. - nate beaty
No spoilers (yet)! You guys have convinced me to start watching this one... ;) - Bryan Landers from iPhone

it's so funny, because onyl a few years back all the talk made it seem like the relational db was The One True Answer but now everything seems to need structures like this one - esther
True. It's the new content of the real-time web, which didn't exist a few years ago, that these NoSQL solutions are perfect for. People seem to agree this time around that there are different optimal solutions for different uses and storage/performance needs. - Bryan Landers from iPhone

i give up. if other people consistently don't care, i can't force them. - nate beaty
not that this is a huge comfort, but as that guy says in "The Red Shoes," it's better to be someone who is copied from than to to be someone who has to copy =P - esther
thanks esther, haha. it is a comfort, i think. - nate beaty
