“dear reddit, f*** you. I submit totally reasonable things and I LOSE KARMA?! Dumbass reddit doesn't like art or women (at least with high probability), it turns out. ”

thats too bad. is that a photo of tsunami victims? - bob
No, it's a river in the Philippines. http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/... - ⓞnor
I think everything on reddit automatically gets downvotes because you are competing with spammers. I wonder if submissions from regular people (those who don't know how to game reddit) ever make it to the front page anymore? - Paul Buchheit
I assumed everybody had learned to only use the sub-reddits? Those have a small enough audience that the spammers aren't bothering with them - Adewale Oshineye
I'm sure with the "Like" button on FriendFeed posts, there's some way of sorting friendfeed posts for display by date and votes, in a redditish fashion. - Slippy Lane
actually, they liked the kids floating in trash enough. it was the vase where i got downvoted. - Lilly Irani
Yeah, I don't know how to game reddit. I had no idea the subreddits where the place to be. Now I think I might be addicted. Maybe I'll start a design one. - Lilly Irani
I dropped something there that made the frontpage in January (a review of color pencils) but I'm no expert there, and didn't even know I have karma points :) Yesterday I submitted the Lufthansa jet near crash, and it received a waloping 53 points (didn't make the homepage though I guess). Most other stuff I remember having submitted there flopped though. Then again the same seems to be true [...] - Philipp Lenssen
[continued, comment length restriction] for Digg, Slashdot, CollegeHumor submissions. - Philipp Lenssen
yeah, I think the key is to submit something enough people will like but that angry people won't be offended by. things that are vaguely feminist tend to get downvoted, unless it is deep down in the comments of of something anti-feminist. maybe i'm just assuming because I see lots of anti-feminist stuff make the homepage. - Lilly Irani
We once tried to get something anti-Digg into Digg. We almost made the homepage but then it was down-voted. http://www.diggsoundboard.com - Philipp Lenssen

Nice idea, but unfortunately I find that the social news sites are fundamentally (and perhaps irrevocably) misogynist. Worse yet, these sites tend to reinforce rather than challenge their prevailing consensuses. I've given up on social news entirely. - david hammer
Irrevocably? That's not very optimistic. - ⓞnor

“Can friendfeed give me a way to know when stuff I've posted has comments so I can respond quickly?”

Right now, we only email you comments if you haven't logged in recently. I agree a more aggressive notification mechanism would be a great feature. - Bret Taylor
Maybe an automated chat message for gmail users in addition to normal email? - Derek Collison
+1 to a chat message. I can't imagine wanting notification by email - j1m
Really? I feel like chat might get overwhelming. I think if I haven't pageviewed while logged in in for 24 hours and I have unseen comments, I guess a chat or mail notification would be fine. BUt i've been staying off chat because I have long bouts of reading these days. - Lilly Irani
What about letting us sort our feeds by "most recent comments" so that the posts with new comments appear at the top? - Jesse Hattabaugh
NetNewsWire, http://www.newsgator.com/Indiv... an awesome and free feedreader for OS X, can diff and highlight in red and green the differences between updates on the same item. For FriendFeed, in comparison, Google Reader kinda sucks. I wish its counterpart for Windows, http://www.newsgator.com/Indiv... could do the same. - John Lam
I'd like to see a separate tab on the interface showing me items i've shared that have gotten comments as well as "Likes". An RSS feed can also be provided for this as well for me to follow - Mark Krynsky
Tis possible (even simple - it must be, I've done it) to write a little app that reloads ff every minute (or whatever) and, when it finds a change in the number of comments on your posts, it adds an event to google calendar (which is configured to send sms) and there you have it - instant notification to your cellphone of comments on your ff posts - Slippy Lane
