“Do you have an anonymous blog? If not, have you thought about it? I'm pretty careful about my posts online because of privacy/future employment concerns, but every now and then I'm tempted to start a blog and really speak my mind on controversial topics I avoid otherwise.”

I have two.. a personal one and a dating one ;) - Mona N.
I had an anonymous blog until I remembered it was on a shared IP with some of my other sites. I should take this into the Heckle-Yourself FF room. - Chris Baskind
A dating one? What, where you chronicle your dating adventures? ;) - Lindsay Donaghe
i at this point just don't care and will say whatever - Cecil Sandus
I've considered it, but I'm terrible at remembering to log in/out of places. Besides, everyone tells me they'd know me anywhere by my writing style, it would be a lost cause! - eve shot first
Last comment and then I really must sleep or at least try. After an extended google chat followed by a half hour on the phone. I can see why there are reasons to have a anonymous blog and on such a blog full confidentiality. All about sex and entirely NSFW or your mom. I liked it. :-) - Mathew A. Koeneker
still am ;) ..but it's updated once every few months in like lumps LOL - Mona N.
No, and yes, have thought about it. Had a rough period a couple of years back, someone wise suggested to me that an anonymous blog was a great way of letting off steam and dealing with the situation. I wouldn't do it today though, too easy to trace back - Duncan Riley
@Duncan, with things like Posterous.com do you think that would be easy to track who was authoring it? You just email your posts in... Create a fake GMail address to use for it. Am I missing something? - Lindsay Donaghe
I'm down to one single anonymous email. Everything else is pretty much spliced in here on FF. I'm all for 100% transparency. I got nothing to hide. Just don't stalk/lurk/troll on me or else. - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
I used to blog anonymously. I don't any longer. Most days I'm glad; some days I wish I were still anonymous. It's not so much "controversial topics" I worry about.... Rather, I do my best thinking/processing through writing. Were I still anonymous I'd be more likely to write (and hence better think about/process) things which I no longer do because they happen to be personal. - Joanmarie
I thought about this yesterday, then I figured I didn't care if people knew it was me writing these things. I decided that I would probably just use a different blog, not an anonymous one. - ♫ Rahsheen™

There is no such thing as an anonymous blog. - Ontario Emperor
Ontario, that's not true. Except to people who personally knew me, the journals I kept from 1995 until recently were completely anonymous. In fact, they were written in such a way that even my friends had trouble figuring out if I were writing about them or not. - Akiva Moskovitz
I had an anonymous dating blog. I'm married now so like my old lucky futon, it doesn't see any action. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
Good question. I've actually been contemplating writing a new blog that is anonymous that has more about life, love, work and reality. That was my goal for my personal blog, but since I know my gramma reads that one, I tend to leave out all the good details. - Lauren Beyer
Yes. Have had it for years. - Cyndy
I've definitely thought about it -- haven't ruled it out yet. - Shey
I am pretty out in the open, so I have not even thought of starting one. Good topic though. - Ethan Jaynes
Mine's not anonymous but it may take people a second of Googling to connect my Livejournal ID to my name. - Morton Fox
I want to do this- Mainly to talk about intimacy subjects - Angie
This is why Scoble's idea of no anonymous IDs is stupid. This if you cant tell is my anon account. Too bad there isnt a plugin to make it easier to switch identities. - Leather Donut
I blog--er, procrastinate at blogging, rather, semi-anonymously. I don't mention my real name when I'm posting, but I was "outed" long ago, to quote the Father of Inkblogging. I can kind of understand how people get annoyed with what others do anonymously, but I think anonymous bloggers who behave and produce decent content should get close to the same level of consideration that authors with pseudonyms get. - MiɳiMagɘ (Sexy Scimitar) via NoiseRiver

“When starting a new blog, which do you think is a better way to start: 1. Building up your lesser important, but 'newbie' type posts to have a solid foundation of posts. 2. Starting out with a strong pillar type posts and fill in the other needed posts afterwards.”

Neither. Start at the beginning on day one and work forwards with time. - Andy Roberts
I agree that is a natural approach to starting a blog, but say you already know what you want to write about for the next 30 days on a blog. You already have set goals and a writing strategy. What would you spend time doing first? When you go to a blog with an established archive, people may see it a bit differently than seeing the same blog with only a handful of posts. - Louis Ponder via twhirl
I wouldn't want to post a month's worth of stuff at once. I don't think people would read it all and it would be harder to market. I say, if you have the material you should post it at whatever posting schedule you want to maintain and write more as you go (to stay ahead). - Joseph Z.
start with some widgets... social interaction will lead to creativity - ⓃⓄⒶⒽ ⒹⒶⓋⒾⒹ ⓈⒾⓂⓄⓃ
I agree with the last post. Add some widgets its a good start. Also as a beginner myself asking the same questions though. - orionstarr
Really good suggestions everyone, but I guess I'm not looking at it from the same point of view. Treating a blog as a product launch, one could argue that having value to the user at the beginning will keep them around longer. So do you concentrate your efforts before launch on having the foundation posts set. Or do you put your best content first to give users the 'WOW' factor to hook them in. The question isn't really about whether you are new to blogging, or how to start a blog from scratch. More of a marketing question I guess. - Louis Ponder via twhirl
I think you should have all your widgets, banner, setup, beginner posts, about page, etc... set up before you put your great material out on the interweb. You want people to show up and think, " why have I not seen this great blog before". You do not want them to say," This is a good post on an ugly noobie blog". That is just my thought. - Ethan Jaynes
I agree. If you have 30 days worth of posts you should have 30 days worth of design work and be ready to pull the trigger on the social sites as soon as you post anything. Build your contacts and be ready to use them. If your blog looks well-established you'll get people, even if you only have a few posts. After all, if you post consistently it only takes a little while to build up your archives. - Joseph Z.

It depends what you want to do - how much PHP and CSS do you know? How customizable do you want it? Is it for a company or for a personal blog? WordPress is a great way to go, but you just need to know what you want to do with your blog. For both beginners and those who want control, WordPress is often a good choice - Ben Parr
Yes, if you want to take care yourself of hosting and desing (you can easly just pick a premade template). Not if you don't even know how to do an FTP. Have you considered the hosted Wordpress.com ? Give it a try before getting in a self hosted Wordpress script. - Fabrice Epelboin
Personally, I would also start with a wordpress.com blog, just so you get the feel of it. If you like it, get your own site! - J.T Dabbagian
