"Well, for the past several years I've seen more and more evidence that America is a country to be avoided at all cost. You've all been wound up into a righteous rage. And the results haven't been pretty. You've turned your back on some of the wonderful things that made your country great and embraced some extremely ugly things -- imperialism, resource wars, torture, etc. Our former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau once observed (I'm paraphrasing somewhat): "Living next to America is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, one is affected by every twitch and grunt." That's all fine and well when the elephant is generally even-tempered. But when it's in a foul temper there is little to no protecting yourself from being trampled. As resources become scarcer and I see us sitting on a pile of them and again and again I hear that "the American Way of Life is non-negotiable," I see a higher and higher likelihood that this is all going... - Craig A. From the page: " Second Life is a virtual world with tens of millions of square meters of virtual lands, more than 13 million â€oeresidents,” and a thriving economy. Large numbers of colleges and universitiesâ€"or, in some cases, individual departments or facultyâ€"are active in Second Life, not only for academic purposes but also for campus visits, recruiting activities for prospective students, and fundraising. Second Life lets educators easily build and modify learning spaces to test how different strategies for a physical space affect learning, and a similar approach can be taken toward educational activities in those spaces. The "7 Things You Should Know About..." series from the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) provides concise information on emerging learning technologies. Each brief focuses on a single technology and describes what it is, where it is going, and why it matters to teaching and learning. Use these briefs for a no-jargon, quick overview of a topic and share... - Craig A. Cunningham

From the page: "There are going to be a lot of people who want to balance the budget squarely on the shoulders of the poor and middle class, who are going to, like Mish, decide that if you need a heart transplant and you can't afford one, you should die. Outside of die-hard libertarians everyone knows that tax rates are going to go up significantly to pay for the drunken spending and shooting spree of the last eight years, and to bail out all the executives who made themselves rich by driving the economy and their companies into the gutter. The rule here is the same as in pokerâ€"if you don't know who the sucker is, it's you. And since you, yes you, have been the sucker for the last thirty years, in which time ordinary wage earners haven't had a single pay increase in real terms, while the rich have increased their income and wealth to gilded age levels, odds are you are the sucker. The rich took the money, but they don't intend to get stuck with the bill. " - Craig A. Cunningham

From the page: "The Linden Scripting Language allows residents of the Second Life World to program the three dimensional objects around them. Without this programming objects built in Second Life are motionless and non-interactive. Adding a script enables an object to interact with the world around it. Second Life scripts allow objects such as cars, planes, amusement park rides, weapons and other entertainment devices to be created. This book teaches the beginning Second Life programmer to make use of the basics of the Linden Scripting Language. Language fundamentals, such as variables, loops, lists, events, functions and state machines are covered. The book then moves to more advanced topics such as user interaction and non-physical movement. Later chapters show how to use the Second Life physics engine to create vehicles. " - Craig A. From the page: "Nicholaz Beresford is the name of my virtual personality and some people call me "the mad patcher" because of my work on the open source version of the viewer software of a certain 3D world. In real life, I am now working for many years now as a self employed software developer and together with a friend I am developing and selling our own line of communication software. This blog is about my interest in virtual worlds and my exploration of the life there as well as the source code under it's hood." - Craig A. Cunningham
