http://senseable.mit.edu/copenha... ..... The Copenhagen Wheel isn’t a bike itself but rather wheel built around a smooth disk containing a three-speed internal hub, a battery, a GPS receiver, and a variety of sensors to monitor ambient conditions such as temperature and pollution levels... NO cabling! .... Wheel owners mount their iPhone (or other smart phone) on the handlebars and use it as a controller via a Bluetooth connection to the hub. Use the phone to lock and unlock the Wheel, to change gears, and to collect and view data, such as miles traveled, noise and weather, etc. Because smart phones are also internet devices, this information can be loaded onto the web and shared via social networking applications or compiled with information from other Wheel owners to create a real-time data map of the urban environment.... The Copenhagen Wheel also captures energy from the brakes to recharge the batteries, a feature that seems to have excited a lot of the gadget press.

Electric mile costs 2 to 3 cents, compared to 8 to 20 cents for a gasoline mile, says Felix Kramer, founder of California Cars Initiative, a nonprofit promoter of plug-ins. President Obama's goal of 1 million plug-in hybrids on U.S. roads by 2015. - http://www.latimes.com/busines...
The transmission combines two electric motors and three planetary gearsets into a case that's the same size as the conventional Mercedes seven speed automatic. The hybrid transmission is directly connected to the engine, without a coupling device like a torque converter. This arrangement is possible because the gearbox operates in two modes: As a CVT during low-speed operation and then it engages four fixed ratios at higher speeds. As a full hybrid, the ML450 will drive under electric-only power—up to roughly 30 mph and 1.5 miles—and thus required independent accessory drives. The power-steering pump, vacuum pump for the brake assist, and the air-conditioner compressor all operate off the vehicle's 12-volt system. Electrical power for the accessories comes from the 2.4 KwH nickel metal hydride battery back. Normal battery voltage is 288 volts, but that's stepped down to run the accessories.
