Can I not just rely on one service to replicate my posts across all these other services using some sorta extensible open api ? Twitter being the biggest whale in this ocean atm would ideally be the primary source of sorts but so lacks in other areas of the social graph ! Looking for a friendfeed in reverse I guess ? Scratch that invert it grrrr how frustrating ! love FF shame it makes regular folk run away in fear brains a melting :) - David Smith
hellotxt if for some reason you don't like ping.fm - K Welch
@David coz a lot of us have different audiences on each service. eg. I am invested in FF and twitter and pownce, in that order and just cross post to jaiku. - Shivanand Velmurugan
Was very impressed with the 'new' Twirl - Using it since Loic posted it last night. Giving this a spin now .... - Charlie Anzman
I particularly dig the Posty screenshot. - Louis Gray
I thought you would Louis :-) Apol for not linking to you, I'd already written the post and screenshots are the last thing I do pre-publication. - Duncan Riley
No problem at all, Duncan. I didn't link to you because my story went first. :-) - Louis Gray
LOL @ Louis - of course you like I like - what's not to like?! :*) I like it! - Susan Beebe
Louis, by a matter of minutes....I'll have to be quicker next time ;-) - Duncan Riley
This is good...I have been a Twitter user for the past couple of months or so. I waiting to see how this will pan out...but from side whatever works is good enough. - Suhit Anantula
@louis actually mine went first - posty got a mention at the bottom. ;) ha ha @duncan thanks for the link :) - Sarah Perez
@Sarah: you're welcome :) but don't click that link now...looks like identi.ca is down... - Trent Olson
@David Smith, the whole point of openmicroblogging is to do that kind of federated network for you. So, YES, but we have to get the other services to sign on. - Evan Prodromou
Seriously though, it seems like identi.ca is just copying everything twitted does with a huge lag. Anything new could have easily been tacked onto twitter as others have done, instead of going to the trouble of creating a whole new posting service to fracture the community. It may have uptime going for it but that is only good while they are small. Will they scale any better? - Ernie Oporto
Ok. Let's start an auction! How much do you bid to receive the notification of the new version Posty TEN minutes before the rest of the group? Place you bid ;) - funkyboy via Posty
Yes, I've had a few people complain about it. Delegated IDs do work, but some people are having problems. Not to be bitchy, but the ones I've investigated, the people having problems weren't delegating correctlly. If you're having an issue, email me at evan@identi.ca and let's step through it to see what's going wrong. - Evan Prodromou
Any hope of getting a more useful error message when this happens? I use this same OpenID on many other sites and don't have problems with it. - Dave Walker
I'm still trying to figure out a reason to use identi.ca. Playing around with it. We'll see. - Dennis Jackson
I don't understand why it was launched WITHOUT a Replies tab in the first place... - Mark Douglass
I agree with Dennis Jackson, minus the "playing around with it" part. - ChaCha Fance
Yes, it lacks some basic features, especially if people are looking at it who are coming from twitter. Not having replies really annoys me, enough not to use it. - jjprojects
GOOD, that is an essential feature... neat to see it growing so quickly - not only with users, but also features - Susan Beebe
Yep - looks like identi.ca has been built correctly so far too. It *appears* to be scaleing up nicely after a few slow days early on. - Jonathan Beckett
@critics: Identi.ca is worth supporting, because it is open source. The very reason means that it has the potential of attracting third-party developers that create plug-ins, improve the platform or simply host their own Identi.ca-installations. That's a huge thing. Think about Firefox: It is based on Mozilla/Netscape's code, which was created. AOL didn't do anything with it, but others came and created Firefox (and Flock, Sunbird, Songbird, etc.) because it is open. That's Identi.ca's biggest feature. - sebmos
sebmos: I'm still learning about Identi.ca. Your comment kind of pushed me back on the site to research it a bit. I can see this going somewhere. :) - Dennis Jackson
Replies tab on Indenti.ca is big. I'd also like to be able to export my subscription lists. Edit/delete would be nice too. - Jeff Evans
Nice to see this feature already. I was talking to the dev yesterday and was asking if I can jump in and provide a solution for it. Cool to see that the guy already did it himself :-). - Alex Popescu via feedalizr
Mark Douglass - Twitter launched without a replies function as well, you know. And it took a lot longer than a few days for it to arrive. - Earle Martin
So if we wildly extrapolate identi.ca's usability increase, it could potentially surpass Twitter in 3 months and Friendfeed in 6. The question then is: will users migrate and become critical mass on the new service? By now we know that critical mass is more important than QoS, as evidenced by the bird and the whale. - µnauta
identi.ca is irrelevant. It's a step backwards from FriendFeed. - Thomas Hawk
Whoa, that must of been some seriously shitty software before now, but still shitty I see? - Andrew Baron
This still is not the distributed version you wanted Dave. And I -with all the respect I owe to its makers- don't think that it will success if all the twitter crowd come in. I hope I'm wrong - directeur via NoiseRiver
I think Replies is a setup in the right direction. In fact. it might be the main step. Awesome. - Andrew Ruess via twhirl
Agree with Alan Le. identi.ca doesn't seem like much of an upgrade. It's a distraction from a better solution - getting everyone over to FriendFeed. - Jon Galloway
Yep, i'm with Jon there... I really don't see the fuss Identi.ca . Why are we getting excited over replies...ridiculous. - Zee from WeDoCreative
These products are all so new. There's plenty or room for experimentation. - Harry Myhre
Thanks, Dave! And thanks to everyone who had comments and critiques. I know that people have a choice in which service to use. I'd like to make sure that a) the software has features equal or better to other µblog sites b) the architecture is truly scalable -- from small commodity web hosting to >1M user megaservices. - Evan Prodromou
Yep. Artifact of the server switchover early Wed morning; it took a lot longer than I anticipated for DNS to propagate out. (If I had any idea of the potential popularity, I would have cranked down the TTL to 5 min before launching, not after!). Now, hewitt redirects to identi.ca again, so nobody should see this URL any more. - Evan Prodromou
So, I absolutely agree that it would have been nice to have some more features and be better ready for the big onslaught than I was. But, all things considered, I'm pretty happy with how things went. The site went live, got on RWW, TechCrunch, Mashable, and Slashdot, got enthusiastic support from Dave Winer and Doc Searls, and shot to 10,000 users in 36 hours. If it wasn't @replies that were missing, it was going to be some other feature, and you just don't know which it's going to be before launch. Anyways: I appreciate your open opinion about this, and I hope that I'll be able to "fill in the gaps" on features and bugs as I've done on servers and scaling. - Evan Prodromou
During the first 48 hours there was no single time that I was unable to access the site, even when users were signing up in their thousands. For that one reason, Identi.ca was instantly superior to Twitter. - Earle Martin
Yes. update@identi.ca is a daemon written in PHP using an alpha-level XMPP library and a platform (Laconica) less than a month old. I'm looking forward to the day when it stays operational for more than 24 hours. - Evan Prodromou
I don't think it's the validation. When I shut down the old server (after moving it several days ago), only FF and BaiduSpider were still hitting it. I think they still have old DNS info, which is why I just sent a feedback email asking that they update it. - Evan Prodromou
I cannot add my feed for the same reason as CDP - Vince DeGeorge
was having the same problem yesterday.. if someone gets it working I'd love to know - Freemor
And I could have had that, Steve, I went for iSteeve to stay consistent. Enjoy! ( I also like those one letter pages, like "S" but don't have any. - Steve P
just what everyone needs, another twitter clone. then we can all talk endlessly about twitter vs friendfeed vs identi.cal ... yay! - Stuart Forsyth via twhirl
directeur, even if it does fail, the code and decentralized service may live on. Any one can grab that code now and host their own service...and they'll all talk to one another. It's liberation day for Microblogging. - Duncan Riley
Duncan: I'm sorry but I don't think so. I haven't studied their code really yet. But do they provide any kind of synchronization betweentwo copies of Laconias. I think their Xmpp is just for talking to one instance of laconia (I think) I mean, I don't think it's that "easy". I may be wrong of course, that was a prediction. I'll study the code :) - directeur via NoiseRiver
@directeur.. you can reshare this thread to room #identica - Naor
They just launched today - we've got to give them a break. Having a completely open book to the community is not a bad thing. The only thing I wonder about is what happens when Twitter starts supporting the OpenMicroblogging platform? Think they ever will? - Jesse Stay
btw, I just msg'd evan, their founder about your issues. We'll see if he responds. - Jesse Stay
Jesse: companies that don't have a good way to contact them via email just seem amateur hour to me. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I agree - they probably launched too soon. That is the essence of OpenSource, for good or for bad. I wonder if they plan to monetize this, or if it is simply just a community project. - Jesse Stay
Robert: it IS amateur hour. it's just a one man pony show, for now. - Matt Albiniak
Can you really call identi.ca a "company"? Running an instance of an open source app, designed to be federated? You know if this is a for-profit effort for them? Seems similar to Noserub. - Ken Sheppardson
Did a whale come up on your screen per chance? (joke- don't throw things!) - Abby Martin
identi.ca is super freakin slow on my iPhone. - Beau Liening
careful, they might not give you your scobleizer name back if you're not nice. ;) - Thomas Hawk
just got a 404 on identi.ca. timeout. - Matt Musgrave
probably is amateur hour, but it's a start. - Duncan Riley
Wait, wait. Jesse, you don't see the irony in a statement about founders of a distributed Open Source system who assign all content to Creative Commons not being an "open book?" - Cyndy
I've gotta say, I find the harshness towards new services like this over the top. I'm biased but almost all of the services we rely on today started as very small organizations with little funding. That's where the good ideas come from. If you don't like something, don't use it. Why spend the extra energy trashing someone else's work, especially when they are giving it away for free? - Ray Grieselhuber
This is going to get only worse...wow... ok where's the OFF button? need more wine to digest this ...hehehe! - Susan Beebe
@Ray, I couldn't agree with you more. If with 20 million in funding things aren't working out then you maybe deserve the heat. Otherwise a grace period should be allowed. - Jon Dillon
Robert: your email bounced because your outgoing server uses a fake DNS name. You may want to look into that; it's a common anti-spam technique to reject mail from non-RFC-compliant servers. I've sent you email from my gmail.com account, so you can correspond with me there if you need it. - Evan Prodromou
“identi.ca does not make a very good first impression to me. Looks pretty much like early beta. Low performance, small featureset. Still like Friendfeed (but hate its noise-ratio).”
