“Who were the lame engineers who came up with a system that runs without encryption? Even the graduates of the local high school programming courses know better than to leave to chance an important security hole.” — John Cierra

I had one of these as a kid. I wouldn’t call it a disappointing gift myself because I did play with it on and off for many months. But I quickly learned that I was not destined to be a great cartoonist.

In the past week, I've stopped receiving updates from Amazon. I tried a manual refresh. When I tried to remove and re-add Amazon, I get the 'oops, there was a problem' message.
I reported the bug using the link at the top of the page (doh). I received a quick reply from Ana that the Amazon feed changed and FF is working on a fix.
- Greg Guitarbuster
Is everyone else still experiencing this also?
- Myrrh C.
Just added to Amazon wishlist and the new items are not appearing when I manually refresh the feed here in FriendFeed.
- Scott of Two Countries
I got a note from Ana a couple of weeks ago that Amazon had changed their interface or API or whatever they use and FF was trying to sync back up with them. I also stupidly deleted my account, but it hadn't been updating anyway. I tried again today (9/14) and no luck.

Oct 15, 2009: Still not working. I noticed this after the custom themes were unveiled, for the longest time I assumed my custom theme was to blame. Guilt > Doubt > Curiosity > Annoyance > Procrastination > Pet Peeve > more Procrastination. I finally emailed FriendFeed yesterday, and got a reply from Ana that same day. It seems like they understand what the problem is, but her email wasn't very reassuring beyond that, as she apologetically stated that this is [still] going to take awhile to fix.

Nov 19, 2009: Still not working. Broken for 3 months.
- Greg Guitarbuster
It is really ridiculous that the Amazon feed has been broken this long. I remember when issues like this were quickly resolved. FriendFeed is clearly no longer a primary concern for the developers.

A number of Download Squad readers have been echoing the same sentiment in recent posts about Google's browser: as soon as LastPass is available, we're leaving Firefox for good. Well, gang, grab your parachutes, it's time to bail! The LastPass crew has released an alpha version of their Google Chrome extension, and it rocks. Check out the screens after the break!

Ah, nice. Would be all over it if I needed a password manager.
- Christopher A Carr
Now, I forget another web browser because WebKit is my favorite page renderer & the style of Chrome is being liked by me. I use IE or Firefox because there's many way to sync my passwords here.
- Sachin Shekhar
This is great news. I was a long-time Roboform user, but LastPass is much better in my opinion. Glad to see that I no longer have to use the bookmarklet in Chrome.
- Evan Brown
I'm on phone right now but I swear to having read reports saying that Roboform now works as a Chromium extension.
- Niklas Pivic
from fftogo
Not quite. They are actually offering a custom build of Chromium with Roboform built in.
- Evan Brown
You have to get the Dev channel build of Chrome...
- Paul Whitaker
This is an excellent idea. People still using old versions of IE will be more likely to download a plugin than an entirely new browser (although the plugin secretly is a new browser)..

Not bad ! But, what will be the basic page rendering engine ? We like chrome also due to WebKit. OK !!!
- Sachin Shekhar
The rendering engine will still be IE’s Trident engine by default unless you visit a page containing the X-UA-Compatible meta tag.

I admit I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, especially when it comes to tech issues, but that article made almost no sense at all. The Beatles torrent scenario for example... in that scenario I (who happen to be a huge Beatles fan) am the aggrieved neighbor! Why shouldn't the greedy bastard have to pay a premium for excessive usage like that? Though the amount of a given ISP's...
- Jim Is Not Smart
Are you sure you read the same article I did? I didn’t find any of it to be convoluted. The general idea to me seems to be that if ISPs are no longer permitted the freedom to manage traffic on their own networks as they see fit, they may have to charge high-consumption users a premium in order to keep the networks from being overloaded.

Hmmm… I’m not sure how I feel about this. I really like Mint; it is much better than Quicken in my opinion. I hope that Intuit doesn’t do anything to mess it up.

President Obama stated that 90 percent of health insurance in Alabama “is controlled by just one company” (that would be Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama). He claimed that we need a government-run insurance option to provide competition. But part of the reason there is not more competition in Alabama is BECAUSE of government since nearly all...
Since nearly all state employees (which make up an increasing percent of the population) get their health insurance through the State Insurance Board, which contracts with BCBS.

Doesn't Marvel have deals with Universal Studio's?
- Mark Layton
Yes they do. Expect those deals not to be renewed. I imagine we will be seeing Spider-Man and the Hulk at Disney World before too long.
- Evan Brown
@Evan. Thanks, that is what I was thinking. Universal has a majority of rides and venues themed from Marvel. Should be interesting to see what happens there and at the Disney Parks.
- Mark Layton
Outstanding. More summer blockbuster crap that I don't have to watch.
- Big K
Thanks, Glen. My son said he appreciates that.

That's like complaining that a pastor's graveside ceremony devolves into a call for souls to come to Christ. Politics was the man's life's work -- liberal politics at that. Ignoring everything he worked for and everything he was working for as he died would be pure farce.
- James (@willia4)
James, your comparison is flawed. A funeral is a very appropriate time to talk about eternity. It is an inopportune time to discuss something as fleeting as politics.
- Evan Brown
You could use that argument to silence anything at a funeral that isn't related to infinity. "John was a great father." "No. Too fleeting. His kids will be dead before the universe ends, let alone before eternity ends." So, if one part of the man's fleeting life is okay to talk about, pretending that his entire legacy is too fleeting is just silly.
- James (@willia4)
This is a sketch from the 1946 MGM film Ziegfeld Follies. My family watched this last night, and my seven-year-old son was on the floor laughing so hard that we had to pause the movie.

I wanna say yes but I think I fall more in the "Hell if I know" category. :)
- pea
Yes. But I don't think new features will be implemented.
- imabonehead
FriendFeed with "improvements" ? FriendFeed as we know it today? Or friendfeed.com as a site? Yes, no, yes are my guesses. Two years no, no, no.
- Brian Sullivan
Well, very probably. But I don't think that I'll be here, myself.
- directeur
Yes, it will exist. And it will have more users. But with the expected demographic associated with the anticipated influx, I doubt I will be as interested in the service. For me, I'll wait and see who the Friendfeed community will be before I decide to invest further or cut my losses.
- Lorin Olsen
:) you've said that since Friendfeed launched directeur! :)
- Zee.
Friendfeed has always been about community and dialog. And I used the tool to test/sense the zeitgeist of tech luminaries that I respected. Twitter is a megaphone; Facebook is the shopping mall. I wanted Freindfeed to be the quiet coffee shop. But Friendfeed may now be over-run by a collection of nattering nabobs. If so, I'll go find a quieter shop where I can have deep and meaningful discussions. Disqus, anyone?
- Lorin Olsen
Easily yes, although "here" could mean "the website is still searchable."
- John E. Bredehoft
I fear not. The equation is [FF = (feeds+people+conversation) * interesting]. If interesting people and contents will migrate in another place, all their friends will follow them. Since FF will be not mainstream, no other people will replace them and so maybe there's not reason to let this service open. I'm afraid about this, really, but I think that a cloud architecture could be the right place for early adopters
- Roberto
It will likely still exist but the real question is if it will keep it's popularity.
- Stephen
Yes, in one way or another. The problem is, people are fleeing just because FB bought it...if too many goes away, whats the point keeping it up? Websites like this has to grow bigger and bigger or else they'll die. If FB wouldn't have bought it, I think FF would have died sooner or later anyway.
- Patrik Johansson
Yes, it will probably be around. Will it be recognizable as the Friendfeed we all know and love? I am much less confident about this. :o(
- Seth Greenblatt
Yes, and hopefully with many more users than now, thanks to the fb acquisition.
- Garin Kilpatrick
Yes - still the cleanest way to have intelligent conversations.
- Alan Morris
yes - they serve different markets. Facebook is for keeping in touch with friends. Friendfeed is for sharing ideas with people who share similar interests but who you may have never met.
- Simon Hicks
Yes..It is going to be here as it provides a cusp of Twitter and Facebook.. as i see it so there is a room for it to stay here longer
- Sardar Mohkim Khan
Well I get the impression from Paul that it will be around for a while so I'd say yes but Facebook will gobble it up at some point (whenever the contract states). The team have been split up and thus fewer people are working and maintaining it. Let's hope some sort of FB Lite will accommodate us... but I doubt it.
- Kol Tregaskes
Maybe it will be integrated in facebook, but the innovations that friendfeed have will then move over to facebook, because they are awesome
- alfred westerveld
Friendfeed yes, the need to use it, no.
- Dani Radu
It depends upon the length of the conversation. I stay seated for a quick, informal talk. If it is a more involved discussion, I may stand, or he may sit down.
- Evan Brown
The only time I get uncomfortable is when my boss sits on my lap.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I stay seated. Sometimes she'll pull up a chair and sit too.
- Yolanda
Yeah, I'd rather they came in and sat down, I have chairs for it. What about clients who come in for a quick talk and insist on standing?
- Matthew DeVries
Definitely. This shows that you respect them. You can offer to let them have your chair or another if available. It sends a message that you are here to support them
