@pwcarey if you use an image in an article, then the article is a derivative of the image
@pwcarey i'm talking about a particular part of CC which not all CC images use
@pwcarey depends on the licenses for the photos
@pwcarey if you use an image with share alike CC, then you are placing your text in the same CC license
@pwcarey you can use some CC images without worry, but you need to check which CC license they are using
@pwcarey if you want to keep your copyright on words, then just don't use images with "Share alike" provisions
@pwcarey it is most likely the case they have no clue what they are doing and just don't realize the consequences
@pwcarey sites that rely on Flickr images piss me off b/c they usually don't bother to read licenses.
@pwcarey yes i do. and i've found non-CC images on Matador. they seem to think anything on Flickr is fair game
@pwcarey you can't just say CC as a blanket term. there are different CC licenses. some it would be yes, some it would be no
@pen4hire article is not text. article is words + images
@pwcarey most writers just think of images as an after thought or as a garnish.
@pwcarey you are missing the concept of "derivative work"
@pen4hire i'm talking about a particular use of Creative Commons and how it affects articles that use those images
@pwcarey the article is a derivative work of the images
@pwcarey an article is word + images just like a song is lyrics + music
@pwcarey if you use an image with a "share alike" http://creativecommons.org/license...
@pwcarey in theory you are right, but if you are using images with "share alike" license, then you are putting the text in CC also
@TheWorldCalls it depends on what CC license you are using.
@pwcarey if you make something new with someone pre-existing, then it is a derivative work.
@davidhfe if you are using an cc image that is "share alike" then the text HAS to be cc, else you can't use the image
