Wow, the numbers boggle me. How does the world get so off kilter like this? They have a point, in that many of those people worked hard to get where they are, but wow, I'm speechless. Makes my payments seem small in comparison, but by percentage, they are the same in that regard...

This sounds crazy but the numbers here are actually on the low side, aside from having a driver (most senior bankers I know don't have one.) A $1.5mm apartment is _moderate/avg_ here in Manhattan where price per sq foot can exceed $1500. Apartments on the UES run $4-6mm, in my less desirable neighborhood it's $1mm+ for a 1-bedroom, $2-3mm or more for some 2+ bedrooms. A senior banker would likely have a place in the $5-8mm range. This is why nobody can afford NYC.

Just to add to that, someone just closed on an 870 sq ft, one bedrm apt in my building for $1.3mm. ($1500 / sqft). That's in a down market, the buyer was a surgeon. I know lots of junior bankers who live 40-60 minutes outside of Manhattan because they couldn't afford a place big enough for their kids here in town.

I think a big part of the expense, at least as I read the article, has to do with the fixed costs of real estate and children's education commitments. To divest from the real estate means big losses and giving up a child's school may be one of the hardest things for any parent to do.

@Anika I don't think I could live a life like that either, but it's not entirely their fault that our society dictates that this is the way they need to be to be in that industry. However, if anyone can change the way the industry is, it is those people that are a part of it. It takes guts to stand up and really make a change in a system so long set to these standards. I am just glad that I never wanted to be a big city banker... Or maybe, the atmosphere of the industry is what caused me to not want it.

Do you think that if enough people can't afford to live there, they will [be forced to] leave, and then the costs will lower, because of less demand, and then things will even out, with regards to housing? I'm hoping for a similar scenario in Michigan with the job market, where enough people leave the state (they are leaving in droves), there will be enough jobs left for those that stay.

Sometimes life is difficult, with difficult choices. A financially large compensation package is a reward for a job well done. Since these caps would only be placed on those companies that received some sort of bail-out, it can be argued that these individuals have not done a good job and therefore do not deserves to be financially rewarded.

While I don't personally live in Manhattan, I have friends who do on a lot less than $500k a year. And I'm kind of hoping that the fallout from this brings down prices in the city to the point that someone making what I make can afford a place there...

In today's technology economy, there is no reason they have to live where they live. Move your operation to a place with lower cost of living. Wall Street does not have to be the center of the universe. It's almost all electronic anyway.

It's nice to say "move out of New York" but the other option for a banker is basically London, which isn't any cheaper. Banking is _not_ an electronic business at the senior level - this is investment banking, which is basically client service, not commercial banking, which is what most people think of when you say "bank." Some of these people are going to move, but if you've been a banker for 20 yrs, it's not so easy to just find another job, sell your home in this market, and yank your kids from school.

They need to take their identity out of what they earn and own, and it is not always easy, but they could live nicely in some smaller place for a while until things start rebounding.

Ask yourself, if you had $1MM to invest, do you want to trust it to the guy who looks like he knows how to make money? Or the guy who drives the Honda Civic and has an office in the strip mall next to the Quiznos? The schools, the addresses, the parties, and the vacation homes are all signals that the bankers know how to make money for themselves, and therefore for their clients. If you can afford those things, you must have made a lot of money for other people to get paid like that.

@Ryan, but go back to what Mark VandenBerg said, and should these people be rewarded, if their companies are asking for a bailout? While I agree with you in the sense that the finery is necessary for the right image, I think it can be (and will have to be) done on less, and I do think that those that are in leadership in the companies that are failing (even, and especially, big banks) should be well, for lack of a better word, punished.

@Igor I was not necessarily blaming the banks, but stating that they obviously did not practice good business if they need a bailout, right? I have heard of many smaller banks that practiced good business, and are actually not hurting at all. I think the crises stem from a multitude of happenings from different places, that all coincided at the same time. It's also not just the lower interest rates, really, it's the people that were greedy and thought that they could get rich quick off of house sales.

Yeah, I'm blaming the financial wizards who decided that it wasn't enough to make money on the crap subprime loans they were pushing, but thought up the brilliant idea of floating 20-40 times the value of the mortgage to the market in the form of mortgage backed securities and credit default swaps. The Fed keeping interest rates low had very little to do with this mess. That was a very weak link in the chain of causation.

The problem with investment banks and bankers is that they compete for higher returns. Bankers compensation is tied to higher returns. The more the banks make the more the bankers make. It is in their self interest to take risk. Instead fixing the salaries to a fix number like 500k it is better to fix the salaries to the profits of the banks.

@Igor Right, because if the salaries have a specific set limit (glass ceiling), they won't be as productive, because they know once they hit that limit, there is no reason for them to continue pushing harder. Salesmen on commission work harder, because it is in their hands how much they make. Their bankers "sales" directly influence the success of the bank, and if they have a glass ceiling, then the bank won't do well when the bankers hit that limit.

FriendFeed does behave differently. The listing is dynamic and whatever has the most activity (liked and/or comments) will push other stuff down. Took a bit for me to adjust, especially since FriendFeed doesn't limit posts to only folks you follow. I hear you can change that, but I like the inclusivity I feel when I see interesting bits from a "friend of a friend."

the one thing Twitter has it is that it was first before FF in that space. And that brings name recognition to the "masses" and a large inertia that you have to overcome before you can become a true replacement, no matter what technical advantages you bring to the table. I think all this FF > Twitter discourse is seriously, seriously underestimating the power of Twitter's unparalleled portability. It's 100% usable through SMS and has an iPod-esque ecosystem of third party tools and add-ons that hook into it. These things brought Twitter to its throne, and now you guys aren't even factoring them into the equation because of a little downtime.

i'll post some thoughts on my blog, but one thing that is still annoying is represented in this post... where your friendfeed shows all aggregated iterations of this post here on ff and it just feels silly as i can choose which iteration to leave a comment on. that's an issue. maybe you should turn comments off on the other instances. except that you cannot because its not a feature. also, check out http://friendfeed.com/frendfe... to see some aggregation bugs.

I think the removal of a character limit would hurt twitter more than help it. Twitter was never meant as a conversation platform. I think keeping it small and simple makes it much easier for people to use. One of it's biggest strengths is that it's a short form messaging service, and to take that away would make it something that isn't twitter.

I love the fact that there is no premium linked with the number of connections you have. In twitter the greater the number of connections, the higher you appear in the "following" list of your follower. That has become a reason of spam, lowering the quality of the twitter network. Plus, FF works.

What it comes down to me is *noise*. FriendFeed is just noisy, what with content from all my social media friends all being dumped into one stream with no organization whatsoever. I look at my FF friends page and I can't make any rhyme or reason to what I'm seeing, even with little favicons to identify which service I'm reading from. Twitter, is clean and organized.

I think Center Networks (Allen) has an interesting analysis. I'll be curious to see if the high profile FF users are as interested in commenting on other people's feeds as having their own words commented upon. Twitter just seems like a more democratic forum to me. Personally, I don't care if it is down a couple hours a week. FF only supplements it, it is not an adequate replacement. And I like to write more than 140 characters! Still Twitter is my first choice.

PS... Because I use the Flock browser, I get all my social media updates right from the Media Bar and People Sidebar, without ever having to open Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, Pownce, Digg, etc... Everything I want is right there at the click of an icon. Flock > FF.

I wouldn't underestimate twitter's connection through sms. It makes it the first legit mobile social network, and that is significant for mass adoption and use. Most people don't have internet on their phone to use a web app (iPhone Facebook, Tumblr, etc.) or internet (twitpic, friendfeed, etc.) to send email to update or submit to services. But they are very likely to have sms service, and are used to using it.

I agree to what you say but besides Twitter reliability, its major flaw is really the reply (or conversation) system which is close to be useless. I guess FriendFeed gained a lot of people (at least myself) because of its efficient conversation system.

Jason, I agree with you a lot of the time but not in this case. I think it would be suicide for Twitter to get into a features arms race with FriendFeed. They would lose that battle. Twitter needs to focus on keeping it simple, getting stable, and becoming a short messaging infrastructure - not a destination.

Twitter has become a victim of the success it created for itself. As Twitter gained popularity it naturally creates a market for competition. Its poor performance allowed FF to grow. Many of Twitters power users have begun to migrate communication, and followers to FF wanted to see what it is all about. Twitter has lost its first movers advantage. I would not have been able to even make this post on Twitter. FF invites conversation and dialogue. Sorry Bezos, you may have made the wrong investment.

Agree. Twitter just isn't built for the type of robust sharing and conversations that make FF really interesting. Twitter is like shouting into a canyon, FF is like being at a noisy bar. Sorry, but too many Tweets are just status updates: You're going to Subway for lunch, whoopee! FF gets a lot better when you hide non-commented on Tweets. As for FF enhancements, I'd like a merge function so the same content from various people/feeds are collapsed into one master. That way I can see all comment streams.

Looks like Twitter has lost the first mover advantage, and now FF has the first mover advantage with its features. Though since Twitter was the first mover in the beginning it still has a bunch of people who are on it and not on other sites and also has a familiar interface and more third party applications that are compatible with it than Twitter does. Favorite thing so far about FF is the new Seesmic feature to reply to a seesmic post from within FF, really killer.

Thomas: great question. a) we pay folks who are working for us if they want, b) there are folks with a vested interest in certain pages (i.e. you might care about Canon 5D page or the Thomas Hawk page), c) some folks like to contribute, d) Mahalo is creative commons, so some folks like to contribute to free content projects like Mahalo/wikipedia because it makes the world better, e) some folks hate to see error and get good feeling fixing them.

Andru: excellent question. Mahalo is VERY similar to wikipedia except: a) we have human curated search results with the wikipedia style page, b) we don't do 6,000 word articles we do 200-600 word summaries with fast facts, etc. basically we do scanable wikipedia pages which are more efficient, c) we cover non-encyclopedic information, wikipedia does not (i.e. we both have Paris, but only mahalo has Paris Hotels), d) we fact check our information, wikipedia does not.

Andru Edwards: exactly... our pages are a) better Google/Yahoo result combined with a b) a better wikipedia page. So, we're taking the two best experiences on the planet (google & wikipedia), and putting them on the same page while making each 2x better. I think it's a compelling page to start your research on. Highly recommend going to the homepage an opening up the first couple of pages, then click on a couple of links in the guide note for each page. you'll see its a really cool experience for research.

If I wanted information from an encyclopedia I would actually get one out or find one. I don't see Mahalo as an encyclopedia. I see it as a search engine to find latest news stories, resources on new and social media and the "internet subculture". I am not a Wikipedia user because I never liked the fact the pages can be edited by anyone and, the incorrect edits aren't always caught in time. Mahalo seems to have a better system than Wikipedia when it comes to checking and ensuring user edits are correct.

Candace Holly: actually, our "stub" pages are NOFOLLOW/NOINDEX on Google/Yahoo until they are really built out (i.e. 200-400 original words). So, yes these *might* be good for whitehat SEO for companies, but not in the short term.. only if they become pages of value... which we decide. We thought about that... good you did too! :-)

If a small company/person has something relevant to offer and talk about they could easily have a page on Mahalo. I've just gotta say, the fact that you can create and edit your own page (or the page of your own business) is fantastic. They have people in place to heck for bias, but other than that, you are free to put yourself and your brand(s) on Mahalo? Nice. I know people who tried to correct misinformation on Wikipedia pages about themselves, only to be banned for doing so.

Just saw it with my 9-y-o daughter. Animation was amazing and it was visually attractive. Story was cute, but not great. I think that Monsters Inc., the Incredibles and even Toy Story had better writing. Most interesting thing to me was that more than half the people in the theater were adults with no children. Definitely a bit of a geeky crowd, different than you might expect for a Disney/Pixar flick. All that said, I think it was worth seeing.

It's really good. The story is simple but it was moving in a really good pace, keeping the audience entertained. The animation was well made. Making the robots a bit more humanlike is fun to watch. i have to admit. it's 5 out of 5. You can also say the same about Wanted. The movie worth 5 out of 5 in a different way. Even though some people who idn't like the movie because curving a bullet is not realistic. But I think they were expecting a different movie.Wanted is a comic book movie dammit!

It seems to me this is kind of a moot point. You draw those who follow you into your convesation and if someone makes a comment that continually intriques you all you have to do is simply subscribe to their ff. it isn't going to be a unreliable issue, it'll be a 'reliable other thing' (like friendfeed) issue. when you are certain that enough of 'the conversation' has moved away, and we can get away without twitter, we'll leave. i'm willing to wager it's already happening. the question i ponder is: can twitter regain its footing, or have they permanently lost it? i hope the money/team can make enough impact fast enough...

The thing that bugs me is that it took some time to build an audience on Twitter. I don't want to give that up by hopping to another service. Although if everyone I Twittered with came over to FriendFeed, I'd jump. Right now it's about 33%

FF is a much better place for conversations Rafe. I suspect that someone like you, a prominent tech journalist, would build up an audience here just as large as your audience at Twitter. For what it's worth I haven't been on FF all that long and I've got almost as many people following me here (2,797) as I've got following me at Twitter now (3,177). The audience is growing faster over here than there as well.

Twitter is no where near dead yet. My personal theory is they didn't expect loads of people choosing to massive amounts of others. In the past week, I've had several people with absurd numbers of follows (one with 60k, one with 90k) - that's insane. Twitter has hired some top talent to address these issues and got new rounds of funding to assist. Personally I still love twitter and find it a different and useful complement to Friendfeed.

Twitter indeed has its limitations. It is NOT a replacement for the fluidity of IRC, it is not viable as a live conference tool, at so many junctures it introduces latency, this is all before we touch upon its infrastructure, reliability, and ability to scale. For me the thing the twitter offers is the ability to sms info quickly to a bunch of people. Events like Siggraph twitting about the next events or the results of events as they happen to people at the shows. Imagine if the SF Giants twittered player info at their games or things like that. I do agree that it's horrible for conversation, but one-way info is a perfect use for it.

I have similarly seen a big decrease in Twitter traffic, even for the simple "New Blog Post" updates I'll do. It used to be sending those would get a few dozen curious visitors. Now it's maybe a handful, and instead, the traffic originates from FriendFeed. Either the transition has happened, or it's an early tell and Twitter could get its groove back.

"like" already won't push up old messages (changed a few weeks ago - it will push up messages in your Comments/Likes page, but not in the general "Friends" page. I'm not sure how to describe the behavior if I like something of "user X" on "user X"s home page - it seems to push up very-old articles if that person has very few "liked" articles.). FriendFeed can probably keep adjusting the window for "old" from 1 day to a few hours as FriendFeed grows.

Another variable is the number of people using Hide. Sure you have X subscribers but not all of those see your photos. I hide your Flickr photos because I subscribe to them already via RSS and want to avoid the duplication.

Jamie, certainly "hide" would diminish the effect of subscribers on FF. I'm sure that there are users who hide 100% of flickr photos entirely for instance. Still I suspect the image was seen more times on FF but clicked through more times from Pownce. I suspect that the audience at Pownce might generally prefer digital media content over text content. Certainly the larger size view of the image on Pownce might also contribute to this.

Most of my Flickr traffic still comes from Flickr itself and Yahoo Image Search. Friendfeed traffic is negligible.

The spread of likes is partly impacted by the number of people you follow and interact with. So far, I've kept my audience here medium-sized, while Scoble tends to cast his net wider. That's why Yuvi returns the data he does. Also, I would assume that Shey is following fewer people than me. As for Mitchell, he is a rare example of the elusive FriendFeed likes/comments addict.

Robert, how many do you actually read? I follow far fewer people, but I find that I'm occasionally dipping my toe into the stream, but missing a lot of stuff that happens. Or do you count on interesting stuff rising to the top of the feed?

Ontario: I look at FriendFeed probably 500 times a day. I don't catch everything, but the good stuff does come back up (and there's duplication, which sends me on a search for the original item, too). On a day when I'm really able to stay engaged on FriendFeed? I'd guess I look at 70% of everything that comes through. On the other hand, I'd guess I see 99% of stuff that is important (and I've noticed that 80% or more of what's important to FF'ers gets on TechMeme anyway within about an hour).

Sorry to be so negative but knowing the way FriendFeed (and it's API) work I would like some clarification on how the script works. Consider this situation: user A likes link 1 from user C, user B likes link 1 from user D. IF Yuvi is basing likes on "links" and not "entries" then sure the data makes sense. But if he is basing common likes on "entries" then user A and user B would not be related despite liking the same link. It really depends on what YOU consider "likes" compatibility.

Benjamin: the methodology Hutch and I used, and I have no reason to doubt Yuvi is using, is that a connection counts when you and the other person both like a story. So things you publish that the person likes and things that person publishes that you like don't count (since you can't like things you publish).

@Benjamin: Understandable. I count "Entries", not Links. So, if one person Likes a Delicious link to something and another person likes the original story, they aren't counted as being shared...

@Mark I don't think you get what I mean. Lets say I like this ENTRY and someone else likes another ENTRY which is a share of this LINK. Yuvi's current script would *not* consider that as a connection. There is a big difference between an entry (http://friendfeed.com/e...) and a link (http://thestatbot.com/2008...) in FriendFeed because of it's spread out nature.

I see what you're saying now, Benjamin. That would be somewhat intense to process, based on my knowledge of the API, but not impossible. I think it just highlights one more reason why Friendfeed could really use story aggregation.

I disagree that the big players give twitter most of its "content". I mean it totally depends what you use twitter for. If you use it as a news aggregator from technology evangelists, then you might be right. In my thinking I use it for much more then just seeing what Scoble or techncrunch has to say. What do you think?

I like the blend of "following" (& maybe conversing) with people I don't know yet, and connecting with people I do know. That's why I also like Spock. You can "friend" people that you know, and also "follow" the newsfeeds of others that you don't know (i.e. Politicians, movie stars, famous authors, sports stars). --- P.S. Spock just changed their interface to mimic FriendFeed.

@Joe, I think Raoulpop said that you needed to unsubscribe and then resubscribe your Flickr feed to enable the import of favorites.

@Chris Farrugia, just click through on the link above and you can access a stream of all flickr users on FriendFeed. I go through the stream and look for interesting publishers or favers and then add them as contacts in FriendFeed.

I've found that faves show up sporadically on FF and never include more than 25 faves.

If you want your faves to show up instantly you can refresh your FF Flickr feed manually.
