Trying to Live on 500K in New York City - NYTimes.com
"“As hard as it is to believe, bankers who are living on the Upper East Side making $2 or $3 million a year have set up a life for themselves in which they are also at zero at the end of the year with credit cards and mortgage bills that are inescapable,” said Holly Peterson, the author of an Upper East Side novel of manners, “The Manny,” and the daughter of Peter G. Peterson, a founder of the equity firm the Blackstone Group. “Five hundred thousand dollars means taking their kids out of private school and selling their home in a fire sale.” Sure, the solution may seem simple: move to Brooklyn or Hoboken, put the children in public schools and buy a MetroCard. But more than a few of the New York-based financial executives who would have their pay limited are men (and they are almost invariably men) whose identities are entwined with living a certain way in a certain neighborhood west of Third Avenue: a life of private schools, summer houses and charity galas that only a seven-figure income can stretch to " - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
Wow, the numbers boggle me. How does the world get so off kilter like this? They have a point, in that many of those people worked hard to get where they are, but wow, I'm speechless. Makes my payments seem small in comparison, but by percentage, they are the same in that regard... - Danielle Closs
This sounds crazy but the numbers here are actually on the low side, aside from having a driver (most senior bankers I know don't have one.) A $1.5mm apartment is _moderate/avg_ here in Manhattan where price per sq foot can exceed $1500. Apartments on the UES run $4-6mm, in my less desirable neighborhood it's $1mm+ for a 1-bedroom, $2-3mm or more for some 2+ bedrooms. A senior banker would likely have a place in the $5-8mm range. This is why nobody can afford NYC. - Tom Karlo
I couldn't live a life that forced to me to keep up appearances just to fit in. I wonder why they feel the need to do so? - Admiral Anika
Just to add to that, someone just closed on an 870 sq ft, one bedrm apt in my building for $1.3mm. ($1500 / sqft). That's in a down market, the buyer was a surgeon. I know lots of junior bankers who live 40-60 minutes outside of Manhattan because they couldn't afford a place big enough for their kids here in town. - Tom Karlo
I think a big part of the expense, at least as I read the article, has to do with the fixed costs of real estate and children's education commitments. To divest from the real estate means big losses and giving up a child's school may be one of the hardest things for any parent to do. - Thomas Hawk
Anika, that is why Friend Feeders are not Bankers! LOL - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I'm just glad and feel very lucky that I've got my four kids in a good public school right now. - Thomas Hawk
@Anika I don't think I could live a life like that either, but it's not entirely their fault that our society dictates that this is the way they need to be to be in that industry. However, if anyone can change the way the industry is, it is those people that are a part of it. It takes guts to stand up and really make a change in a system so long set to these standards. I am just glad that I never wanted to be a big city banker... Or maybe, the atmosphere of the industry is what caused me to not want it. - Danielle Closs
Do you think that if enough people can't afford to live there, they will [be forced to] leave, and then the costs will lower, because of less demand, and then things will even out, with regards to housing? I'm hoping for a similar scenario in Michigan with the job market, where enough people leave the state (they are leaving in droves), there will be enough jobs left for those that stay. - Danielle Closs
Sometimes life is difficult, with difficult choices. A financially large compensation package is a reward for a job well done. Since these caps would only be placed on those companies that received some sort of bail-out, it can be argued that these individuals have not done a good job and therefore do not deserves to be financially rewarded. - MVB (Grinch of FF)
While I don't personally live in Manhattan, I have friends who do on a lot less than $500k a year. And I'm kind of hoping that the fallout from this brings down prices in the city to the point that someone making what I make can afford a place there... - Eric P
In today's technology economy, there is no reason they have to live where they live. Move your operation to a place with lower cost of living. Wall Street does not have to be the center of the universe. It's almost all electronic anyway. - Eric @ CSTechcast.com
MOVE! Sorry if you can't live on the Upper East Side anymore and pay $30K a year for private school for EACH of your kids. Sorry you will have to give up you house in the Hamptons. Sorry you can't park your BMW 7 in a heated garage for $500 a month. Sorry....welcome to the human race! - John Flynn
It's nice to say "move out of New York" but the other option for a banker is basically London, which isn't any cheaper. Banking is _not_ an electronic business at the senior level - this is investment banking, which is basically client service, not commercial banking, which is what most people think of when you say "bank." Some of these people are going to move, but if you've been a banker for 20 yrs, it's not so easy to just find another job, sell your home in this market, and yank your kids from school. - Tom Karlo
They need to take their identity out of what they earn and own, and it is not always easy, but they could live nicely in some smaller place for a while until things start rebounding. - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Ask yourself, if you had $1MM to invest, do you want to trust it to the guy who looks like he knows how to make money? Or the guy who drives the Honda Civic and has an office in the strip mall next to the Quiznos? The schools, the addresses, the parties, and the vacation homes are all signals that the bankers know how to make money for themselves, and therefore for their clients. If you can afford those things, you must have made a lot of money for other people to get paid like that. - Ryan Kuder
If we calculate the rent of the White House and all Obama's servants, he makes more than 500,000 a year. Let Obama move to the projects and bicycle to work everyday! As far as secret service protection goes, Obama can buy a gun and protect himself from terrorists on his way to work! <sarcasm> - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Ryan, but go back to what Mark VandenBerg said, and should these people be rewarded, if their companies are asking for a bailout? While I agree with you in the sense that the finery is necessary for the right image, I think it can be (and will have to be) done on less, and I do think that those that are in leadership in the companies that are failing (even, and especially, big banks) should be well, for lack of a better word, punished. - Danielle Closs
Something has to be done, and I don't envy those that have to make the decisions about what... - Danielle Closs
Yeah, Danielle, you hit the nail on the head. These guys, by and large, don't deserve the posh life because they and their brethren have screwed the pooch in royal fashion. - Alex Scoble
++ Spidra & Alex - Kamilah Gill
All you guys blaming the bankers for the Mortgage crises, but it was the FED that kept the interest rates so low that everyone in USA thought they could become the next millionaire from buying a new house! The banks should have requested a high down payment not almost zero down! - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Oh, the poisonous thoughts that come to mind ....... - Martha
And those of us with conventional 30-year mortgages in modest houses are going to have to pay for all this. - Julie Barrett from twhirl
@Igor I was not necessarily blaming the banks, but stating that they obviously did not practice good business if they need a bailout, right? I have heard of many smaller banks that practiced good business, and are actually not hurting at all. I think the crises stem from a multitude of happenings from different places, that all coincided at the same time. It's also not just the lower interest rates, really, it's the people that were greedy and thought that they could get rich quick off of house sales. - Danielle Closs
Yeah, I'm blaming the financial wizards who decided that it wasn't enough to make money on the crap subprime loans they were pushing, but thought up the brilliant idea of floating 20-40 times the value of the mortgage to the market in the form of mortgage backed securities and credit default swaps. The Fed keeping interest rates low had very little to do with this mess. That was a very weak link in the chain of causation. - Alex Scoble
These financial idiots are the NUMBER EFFING ONE REASON for this mess. Without these guys it would have been like 2000 lb. bombs getting dropped on a few communities, with these guys it was like a nuke was dropped on Las Vegas and New York. - Alex Scoble
@Spidra I agree with you, the cover never tells the whole truth, but society still expects big bankers to be a certain way, as the do expect engineers, geeks, or doctors to be a certain way. We need to change this system of the cover tells the story, as well as fix the economic situation. Fall back and regroup, get back to basics, and just be more genuine, all around... Easier said than done! - Danielle Closs
Of course if we cut their salaries drastically, many of these imbeciles will move to other industries and screw them up as well. Perhaps we should leave them in banking... - MVB (Grinch of FF)
I think they should be put to work holding up lamp posts, Mark. That's about all they are good for. - Alex Scoble
Alex, the derivative market was not regulated at all. The FED should have been regulating it. If you place a pot of gold in the middle of the street and no one watching it, someone will take the pot home! - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Mark, lol! You have a point, but do we want them playing with our money still? Maybe we make them make a mandatory change in industry, as long as it's not something important, like the medical industry. Of course, come to think of it, is there an industry right now that can afford to be screwed up more? - Danielle Closs
The fault still lies with the crooks, Igor and not with the cops missing the crime. You need to stop sticking up for these asshole crooks. It's making you look like an asshole as well. - Alex Scoble
Ryan, I agree with Spidra. If I had a mil, I would invest with the frugal guy driving the old honda with a record of making money for his clients. Not the guy who's leveraged to the hilt and just getting by. - Greg Guitarbuster
The problem with investment banks and bankers is that they compete for higher returns. Bankers compensation is tied to higher returns. The more the banks make the more the bankers make. It is in their self interest to take risk. Instead fixing the salaries to a fix number like 500k it is better to fix the salaries to the profits of the banks. - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Alex, I am not sticking up for them. I would not want to be a banker in the first place. But with capping their pay, we will make the banking problem take longer time to fix. People will not work so hard for so little money. They will go work for Asian and European banks or hedge funds. - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
@Igor Right, because if the salaries have a specific set limit (glass ceiling), they won't be as productive, because they know once they hit that limit, there is no reason for them to continue pushing harder. Salesmen on commission work harder, because it is in their hands how much they make. Their bankers "sales" directly influence the success of the bank, and if they have a glass ceiling, then the bank won't do well when the bankers hit that limit. - Danielle Closs
This seems to me like it's not going to work [to help the economy], except to punish the bankers... - Danielle Closs
Igor, then the banks should be hiring tribal warlords and drug cartels, people that know how to manage risk. Oh wait, the bankers are holding their money already. - Greg Guitarbuster
These banks need to be punished, Danielle. Without accountability there is no trust and without trust there are no markets. - Alex Scoble
This is more a political move by Obama Administration to get support from his constituents. Obama is the president already, what is he trying to prove? He needs to sacrifice some goats for the public? LOL - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Wow, what a nauseating article. - cjmart
@Alex So, this is more about punishing the banks, then about cleaning up the economy. Seems to me that many people have the wrong idea. As long as there is a focus, one way or another. I was [as are many others] under the impression that this was a money-saving tactic... Anyone have figures on how much it might save, if any, or if that part of the equation matters? - Danielle Closs
Greg, Taliban Hamas, Al Qaeda are all available! They have lots of Saudi experience! LMAO - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
This has nothing to do with saving money, in my opinion. We are saying that banks that have taken bailout money don't deserve to pay their employees exorbitant amounts on the US taxpayer's dime. It's punitive. As it should be. - Alex Scoble
Igor, Taliban is not available, they are signing a long term consulting gig with Pete Session, Texas congressman who wants to build a Republican insurgency - Greg Guitarbuster
Alex, the USA government is the biggest investor in these banks now. Is it not in the government interest to hire the best and the brightest to make their investment go up in price? The USA government represents the USA people, so it is the American people investments. But then maybe Alex likes to work for free on Friend Feed! LOL - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Well I guess not many people will be attending business schools over the next decade or so. Better enroll in Medical school and become a doctor. Better pay! - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
These idiots already proved that they aren't the best and the brightest. AND they proved that they aren't worth their pay by doing serious harm to the economy. - Alex Scoble
@Igor We could go back to their education, that would be a good place to start. We all know that our education here is going downhill. Of course, the thing of it is, it happened, let them figure out how to fix it, I don't want to hear any more about how it is costing me money... - Danielle Closs
It's all just a big blame game, and I'm done with that, let's just learn from the past, move on, and try to fix it... - Danielle Closs
They proved that peer pressure defines them! They behaved and did how was expected of them by their shareholders. Maximize returns on investment. If they did not take the risk they would have been fired. - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Ah yes, the cliques from highschool really do still exist in the "real world". - Danielle Closs
Actually the shareholders of the banks are to blame for this mess! They shareholders and the directors should have voiced their discontent with the amount of risk the banks are taking. I personally have been out of the stock market since 2004. I did not believe in the real estate get rich ponzi scheme. I sold all my stocks in 2004 and have my money in bonds, no Lehman. ;-) - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק

Why Brands ABSOLUTELY DO Belong on Twitter
"A Mashable article by Dr. Mark Drapeau was passed around on Twitter this Friday, calling for a ban on brands on Twitter. I respectfully disagree." - ~C4Chaos from Bookmarklet

It was Chinese tea. I don't remember the color other than being usual tan color. - Robert Scoble
It was 108RMB, which comes out to almost $16US. For Chinese that's very overpriced, which explains why there are thousands of touristing Chinese outside, but no one inside. The average wage of Chinese is a few hundred RMB per month. - Robert Scoble

I live near, and have been to, the only Tea Plantation in North America. It was very interesting to see the actual working production line, from the leaves coming in from the fields to the finished product. - Ian May
Looks like a semi-black/oolong. It also looks like the expense comes not from the tea, but the presentation and surroundings. Sort of like a hamburger in Times Square. - stretta
Ian, that's the plantation in Charleston, right? I buy their tea every once in a while. Also have a bag of rice from the grower down there... Would love to take a weekend to visit both. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)

FriendFeed does behave differently. The listing is dynamic and whatever has the most activity (liked and/or comments) will push other stuff down. the one thing Twitter has it is that it was first before FF in that space. And that brings name recognition to the "masses" and a large inertia that you have to overcome before you can become a true replacement, no matter what technical advantages you bring to the table. I have 5 times more followers in Twitter than FF, and sadly a mass migration doesn't seem to be happening for these folks. - Daniel Robitaille
Your post to a given site takes on more life when it hits the pages of friendfeed. It's almost like you weigh where you want to "release" a post first knowing that it will get "picked up" by friendfeed. - todddoubleu
I do not think Twitter will survive as CMS systems that run into message bus systems are the hardest to scale on ruby on rails nd they do not have the money to fight two fronts ruby on rails scalability and new features to stave off competition. - Fred Grott
good link, allen. some additional default choices would be fantastic. read: better discovery mechanisms. having only members of the echo chamber as default choices makes for a duller feed. no offense to present company. ;) - Brooks Bayne
I think all this FF > Twitter discourse is seriously, seriously underestimating the power of Twitter's unparalleled portability. It's 100% usable through SMS and has an iPod-esque ecosystem of third party tools and add-ons that hook into it. These things brought Twitter to its throne, and now you guys aren't even factoring them into the equation because of a little downtime. - David Chartier
i'll post some thoughts on my blog, but one thing that is still annoying is represented in this post... where your friendfeed shows all aggregated iterations of this post here on ff and it just feels silly as i can choose which iteration to leave a comment on. that's an issue. maybe you should turn comments off on the other instances. except that you cannot because its not a feature. also, check out http://friendfeed.com/frendfe... to see some aggregation bugs. - sull
Jason, that's a brilliant "There Will Be Blood" reference. And so true. I'm afraid that Twitter is just a couple of weeks from being bludgeoned with a bowling pin by FF. - Frank Roche
I think the removal of a character limit would hurt twitter more than help it. Twitter was never meant as a conversation platform. I think keeping it small and simple makes it much easier for people to use. One of it's biggest strengths is that it's a short form messaging service, and to take that away would make it something that isn't twitter. - Austin Brown
Jason, I fully agree with what you say here. - Steve Rubel
I love the fact that there is no premium linked with the number of connections you have. In twitter the greater the number of connections, the higher you appear in the "following" list of your follower. That has become a reason of spam, lowering the quality of the twitter network. Plus, FF works. - Marcello Del Bono
I can see how Twitter is useful for people who post via SMS, but while Im at the computer FF is far more useful and also more fun to use - Jeff Hoard from twhirl
I could offer my agreement here on your entry's content, but I'd rather tell you how much I dug the entry's title. - Donna Mugavero
I'll put it this way, i never used twitter because I'm not part of the technorati community, but I do use Friendfeed because it allows me to bring together all my online content and then share it with the people I want. That alone is enough for FF to beat out Twitter for me. - Alfredo Padilla
I think one of the things we have missed carries forward or plays forward a Robert Scoble post, see : http://scobleizer.com/2008... ..let me put it in non tech terms as it pertains to start-ups. FOUNDERS MUST PARTICIPATE IN THE COMMUNITIES THAT FROM AROUND THEIR PRODUCTS! When I state founders I mean also the ones building the product. - Fred Grott
What it comes down to me is *noise*. FriendFeed is just noisy, what with content from all my social media friends all being dumped into one stream with no organization whatsoever. I look at my FF friends page and I can't make any rhyme or reason to what I'm seeing, even with little favicons to identify which service I'm reading from. Twitter, is clean and organized. - Stephen Lopez
School of ALL CAPS is a little loud... ;-) - Mitchell Tsai
I think Center Networks (Allen) has an interesting analysis. I'll be curious to see if the high profile FF users are as interested in commenting on other people's feeds as having their own words commented upon. Twitter just seems like a more democratic forum to me. Personally, I don't care if it is down a couple hours a week. FF only supplements it, it is not an adequate replacement. And I like to write more than 140 characters! Still Twitter is my first choice. - Liz
PS... Because I use the Flock browser, I get all my social media updates right from the Media Bar and People Sidebar, without ever having to open Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, Pownce, Digg, etc... Everything I want is right there at the click of an icon. Flock > FF. - Stephen Lopez
I wouldn't underestimate twitter's connection through sms. It makes it the first legit mobile social network, and that is significant for mass adoption and use. Most people don't have internet on their phone to use a web app (iPhone Facebook, Tumblr, etc.) or internet (twitpic, friendfeed, etc.) to send email to update or submit to services. But they are very likely to have sms service, and are used to using it. - Tony

I agree to what you say but besides Twitter reliability, its major flaw is really the reply (or conversation) system which is close to be useless. I guess FriendFeed gained a lot of people (at least myself) because of its efficient conversation system. - fbrunel
Jason, I agree with you a lot of the time but not in this case. I think it would be suicide for Twitter to get into a features arms race with FriendFeed. They would lose that battle. Twitter needs to focus on keeping it simple, getting stable, and becoming a short messaging infrastructure - not a destination. - Mike Doeff
Mike, I think you're right on. Twitter would do better to solidify its differentiation. - Clay Newton
Agreed. I have flip flopped a couple of times on which service I prefer, but FriendFeed is clearly in the lead. If they launch a great iPhone app next Friday it could be thing that pushes them over the hump. - Scott Watermasysk
Scott: FriendFeed already has a great iPhone app. http://www.friendfeed.com/iphone - Robert Scoble
FF's iPhone web app is fun and all, but a native app could offer a lot more functionality without having to wait for page loads and other clunkiness. I'm hoping for a native app too. - David Chartier
Twitter has become a victim of the success it created for itself. As Twitter gained popularity it naturally creates a market for competition. Its poor performance allowed FF to grow. Many of Twitters power users have begun to migrate communication, and followers to FF wanted to see what it is all about. Twitter has lost its first movers advantage. I would not have been able to even make this post on Twitter. FF invites conversation and dialogue. Sorry Bezos, you may have made the wrong investment. - Fred Neil
Agree. Twitter just isn't built for the type of robust sharing and conversations that make FF really interesting. Twitter is like shouting into a canyon, FF is like being at a noisy bar. Sorry, but too many Tweets are just status updates: You're going to Subway for lunch, whoopee! FF gets a lot better when you hide non-commented on Tweets. As for FF enhancements, I'd like a merge function so the same content from various people/feeds are collapsed into one master. That way I can see all comment streams. - AJ Kohn
I agree. Great post. - jonn
Keep in mind that twitter was not initially made for replies, the whole @ sign reply came from users wanting a way to reply and Twitter then started to support the method - Ray Slakinski from twhirl
Nice way to put it! - ChaCha Fance
Looks like Twitter has lost the first mover advantage, and now FF has the first mover advantage with its features. Though since Twitter was the first mover in the beginning it still has a bunch of people who are on it and not on other sites and also has a familiar interface and more third party applications that are compatible with it than Twitter does. Favorite thing so far about FF is the new Seesmic feature to reply to a seesmic post from within FF, really killer. - Andrew Fielding
I'm still one of the few that want's Jaiku to get back in the game! Google is dropping the ball there!!! - tomit
Jason Calacanis
New Mahalo features: anyone can edit (even if not logged in) and anyone can create a new page (easily) - http://www.calacanis.com/2008...
two new features... let me know what you think! - Jason Calacanis from Bookmarklet
is mahalo basically just a for profit wikipedia? Why would someone want to create a page there? What would be the motivation? - Thomas Hawk
What makes this different from WIkipedia? This seems to make it virtually identical - unless the main feature is that you guys have the paid employees to verify research, and of course, the great Mahalo guide articles. - Andru Edwards
Thomas: great question. a) we pay folks who are working for us if they want, b) there are folks with a vested interest in certain pages (i.e. you might care about Canon 5D page or the Thomas Hawk page), c) some folks like to contribute, d) Mahalo is creative commons, so some folks like to contribute to free content projects like Mahalo/wikipedia because it makes the world better, e) some folks hate to see error and get good feeling fixing them. - Jason Calacanis
Andru: excellent question. Mahalo is VERY similar to wikipedia except: a) we have human curated search results with the wikipedia style page, b) we don't do 6,000 word articles we do 200-600 word summaries with fast facts, etc. basically we do scanable wikipedia pages which are more efficient, c) we cover non-encyclopedic information, wikipedia does not (i.e. we both have Paris, but only mahalo has Paris Hotels), d) we fact check our information, wikipedia does not. - Jason Calacanis
Personally I think it might be better if only registered users could edit (with valid email addresses), to help prevent abuse, etc. - Vincent X
Vincent X: we've had it setup that way for months now. it creates a massive hurdle for people getting involved so we're trying a more open system now. - Jason Calacanis
Hey Jason, great answers. I someone didn't "get" the fact that you guys just have the quick summary as opposed to the huge pages that Wikipedia has sometimes. So even though both allow anyone to edit, and both can be research tools, there is a significant difference between the two. - Andru Edwards
Andru Edwards: exactly... our pages are a) better Google/Yahoo result combined with a b) a better wikipedia page. So, we're taking the two best experiences on the planet (google & wikipedia), and putting them on the same page while making each 2x better. I think it's a compelling page to start your research on. Highly recommend going to the homepage an opening up the first couple of pages, then click on a couple of links in the guide note for each page. you'll see its a really cool experience for research. - Jason Calacanis
If I wanted information from an encyclopedia I would actually get one out or find one. I don't see Mahalo as an encyclopedia. I see it as a search engine to find latest news stories, resources on new and social media and the "internet subculture". I am not a Wikipedia user because I never liked the fact the pages can be edited by anyone and, the incorrect edits aren't always caught in time. Mahalo seems to have a better system than Wikipedia when it comes to checking and ensuring user edits are correct. - Candace
Jason - Are you worried that this might open up Mahalo to being 'gamed' of a sort? I always liked the fact that Mahalo is people-powered, and helps prevent SEO, or 'gaming' of the system. I'm assuming this is the type of thing that eventually the community continues to fix? They will weed out the bad stuff, and leave the good stuff to filter up? - Adam Hosp
I made a Thomas Hawk page but it feels confusing. http://www.mahalo.com/Thomas_... I'm not sure I'm doing it right. I don't know how to get my last name capitalized or to add more biographical information, etc. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas Hawk: yes, it is a little confusing, just like making a wikipedia page is. we're trying to make it easier. You've done a great job so far... add some fast facts and a couple of more links and you've got a great start to a page! - Jason Calacanis
how do I capitalize my last name? - Thomas Hawk
Here's a great place to test the service. The FriendFeed page can use quite a bit of content additions, especially in the Tools area http://www.mahalo.com/FriendF... - Mark Krynsky
Thomas: changing the name of a page is something only we can do... at least right now. we will fix it. Also, check out the additions i made to your page... i added a quote, your stated life goal, and put a citation on it with the <ref> tag - Jason Calacanis
Wait - so I can just go in and create an Andru Edwards page on Mahalo, and that is okay? Unlike how that is against Wikipedia rules? - Andru Edwards
Adam Hosp: i'm not worried at all because Mahalo has 60 full-time fact checkers.... anyone who tries to game the system will get caught really quickly. - Jason Calacanis
hmm... ok, added a few more links as well. Can I upload a photo of me for my Thomas Hawk page? - Thomas Hawk
This is the next step in what I've been saying since day 1 - that Mahalo would have to open up more and more to be able to compete - the question is whether people will actually want to do it. Thomas, once you create your page, it will push up very quickly to the top of google for your name - are you sure you are ok with that? - Allen Stern
Thomas Hawk: we haven't given users the ability to add photos yet... that's coming. - Jason Calacanis
Andru: just created it. http://www.mahalo.com/Andru_e... so, yes, anyone can create any page (within reason). and yes, you can edit your own page (but we will check it for bias of course). - Jason Calacanis
Another question to toss out since you noted almost anyone can make their own pages within reason. Obviously this would push them up to practically the top of search engines. Do you think that could actually become a tool for smaller companies to use for SEO and promoting themselves on the web? - Candace
I am not sure about adding a page but wish you'd clean up the front page a bit; Looks like old style. Consider feedly's look for a way to do the featured stories. - LPH™ and his dog P™
Cool, I'm now Thomas Hawk with a capital "H", thanks Jason. If they can add my profile photo this is the one that I like to use: http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Thomas Hawk
LPH: new homepage coming... i agree 100%!!!! thanks for feedback. - Jason Calacanis
Sure, happy to have a page Allen, what's wrong with having it push to the top of Google? Why would someone not want that? - Thomas Hawk
Candace Holly: actually, our "stub" pages are NOFOLLOW/NOINDEX on Google/Yahoo until they are really built out (i.e. 200-400 original words). So, yes these *might* be good for whitehat SEO for companies, but not in the short term.. only if they become pages of value... which we decide. We thought about that... good you did too! :-) - Jason Calacanis
Do these payed people only check facts? Or do they actually help mahalo grow up (by adding new articles and more content on existing articles)? - Marcos Marado from fftogo
Thanks for the answer.Thinking on my own train of thought here... that could be a pretty good tool. If a small company/person has something relevant to offer and talk about they could easily have a page on Mahalo. This could also cause them to use Mahalo more often knowing it's a bit more "everyone friendly" in terms of user created content. - Candace
Question for Jason - After this dialog, what's your impression of FriendFeed? - Charlie Anzman
Hi :-) Small question: Why are the login and sign up button hidden and require JavaScript to be visible? - Horst Gutmann
Thomas Hawk: I just added your picture it should show up in a few minutes... - C. K. Sample III
Thanks C.K. Looks good! - Thomas Hawk
Horst: looking into it. Candace: we would love to have more people and companies participate and build their pages out in Mahalo. So, yes, it is a great idea for folks to do this (provided they are not hated... then that stuff might get put on your page! :-) - Jason Calacanis
@Jason thank you :-) - Horst Gutmann
I've just gotta say, the fact that you can create and edit your own page (or the page of your own business) is fantastic. They have people in place to heck for bias, but other than that, you are free to put yourself and your brand(s) on Mahalo? Nice. I know people who tried to correct misinformation on Wikipedia pages about themselves, only to be banned for doing so. - Andru Edwards
Jason Calacanis
YOUR Wall-E review: Tell me, is Wall-E really as good as everyone is saying? - http://www.mahalo.com/Wall-e
am seeing at the el capitan at 4. shall report back ...maybe. if I remember. - Erin @queenofspain
Why does this story come second on my FF? - Jason Calacanis
Jason: There must have been some activity on another item in your stream after this post went live. My commenting on this should push it up to your first slot again (I think). - Eric Florenzano
Yes - TDavid
Wall-e is great go!!! This is second on your friendfeed cause friendfeed is trying to do too much in one place. IMHO - Cody Heitschmidt
For sure. I saw it on a digital screen and it was wonderful. I'm going again tonight. ... And tomorrow, - Tommy Vallier
It is remarkably good. The empathy you have for these little robots is unmatched. - Caleb Elston
I think it's the best animated movie I have ever seen. Really. Better than Iron Giant. - JJ Lassberg
Wall-E is a really good movie - not too kid-ish and was getting laughs out of everyone. - Jeremy Tymes
I thought it was fantastic - best Pixar movie yet. Beautiful and heartfelt, and some of the most incredible animation ever done. There's something really special about a robot love story that just can't be put into words. - Tommy S
its supposed to be rates as the best movie fo the decade http://friendfeed.com/e... - Peter Dawson
Taking my daughter in about an hour. Will drop a note after. - Barry Graubart from twhirl
Going to see it with the kids in Director's Hall at The Bridge tomorrow. *so excited* - Dan Parsons
Wall-E is better than everyone is saying. It's Pixar at its finest. - Tony
Yes it is as good as advertised. I just got back from a screening and I am stunned. The best Pixar film yet by far. - Brian Sanderson
It's amazing. Beautiful Story, brilliant attention to detail. Only one complaint. Using live human video footage interspersed with the animation. I give it a 11/10. - Adam Mordecai
Says a lot about our increasingly intimate relationship with technology. - Chris Baskind
Not sure about Wall E but there seems to be a buzz - Jim @TechFrog Alden
Wall E is definitely the best CG movie ever... may be one of the best movies ever. 30 minutes in and I had already laughed, cried, and fell in love with a character that doesn't really speak. See it... see it now. - Kris Kelley
Sweet and Clever... my family all enjoyed it a lot. I think I laughed the hardest (dad). Laughed even harder at the bunny/magician short film before the movie... that was effin hilarious! - Little Guy
Me and my boys loved it, the the short film Presto, before, was drop dead funny. - Anthony Bossuyt
Go see WALL•E! - Brian T. Nakamoto
The trailer looks pretty clever. - Greg
It was wonderful. It is as great as people are saying. - Sawyer
Just saw it with my 9-y-o daughter. Animation was amazing and it was visually attractive. Story was cute, but not great. I think that Monsters Inc., the Incredibles and even Toy Story had better writing. Most interesting thing to me was that more than half the people in the theater were adults with no children. Definitely a bit of a geeky crowd, different than you might expect for a Disney/Pixar flick. All that said, I think it was worth seeing. - Barry Graubart from twhirl
Every Pixar film is enjoyable in its own way. Other Pixar films speak to me more personally, but I enjoyed WALL-E greatly. FYI, it's very much a science fiction film, in the best sense. - Brent Newhall
Echo what everyone else is saying. An amazing, visually stunning work. Well worth your time. - Michael
It's really good. The story is simple but it was moving in a really good pace, keeping the audience entertained. The animation was well made. Making the robots a bit more humanlike is fun to watch. i have to admit. it's 5 out of 5. You can also say the same about Wanted. The movie worth 5 out of 5 in a different way. Even though some people who idn't like the movie because curving a bullet is not realistic. But I think they were expecting a different movie.Wanted is a comic book movie dammit! - excalipoor
Saw it last night. Good film, slaps you in the face with environmentalism the whole time. - E.J. Alcantara
I also enjoyed Wall-E, although it's definitely targeted toward the TV-Y7 younger audience. My daughter called it a "Chick flick with robots." See it in a digital theater if you can. I did enjoy the subtle social commentary about obesity *and* the little Macintosh inside joke. - Dave Dugal

It seems to me this is kind of a moot point. You draw those who follow you into your convesation and if someone makes a comment that continually intriques you all you have to do is simply subscribe to their ff. No need to wage a big dick contest with numbers of followers here. Its all about the conversation. Just an observation at this point.. How unreliable does Twitter have to get before people like me give up on it totally?
Really, really, really unreliable. - Mack D. Male
I have already left for Plurk. I use Feedtweeter to send all my Plurks to twitter. - Jon
it isn't going to be a unreliable issue, it'll be a 'reliable other thing' (like friendfeed) issue. when you are certain that enough of 'the conversation' has moved away, and we can get away without twitter, we'll leave. i'm willing to wager it's already happening. the question i ponder is: can twitter regain its footing, or have they permanently lost it? i hope the money/team can make enough impact fast enough... - Jeremy Toeman
Plurk will have problems soon, too. They're already showing. - Hao Chen
The thing that bugs me is that it took some time to build an audience on Twitter. I don't want to give that up by hopping to another service. Although if everyone I Twittered with came over to FriendFeed, I'd jump. Right now it's about 33% - Rafe Needleman
I hear you, Rafe. As it is right now, I'm using both FF and Twitter, but if they have another major outage, I think a bunch more people will switch. Still, because FF is promiscuous (it reads my Twitter feed) there's no loss to continue to use Twitter while it remains useful. - David Sifry from twhirl
In your case, I'm quite sure your audience will follow you wherever you go - Bwana ☠
Rafe - same for me. I don't want to move to another app and rebuild my community. So, I guess i'll have to suffer through the Twitter growing pains. - Jim Turner
FF is a much better place for conversations Rafe. I suspect that someone like you, a prominent tech journalist, would build up an audience here just as large as your audience at Twitter. For what it's worth I haven't been on FF all that long and I've got almost as many people following me here (2,797) as I've got following me at Twitter now (3,177). The audience is growing faster over here than there as well. - Thomas Hawk
but you are thomas hawk. people follow you, - excalipoor
Bwana & Thomas are right, it won't be a problem to get audience here, You might like it even more here - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Twitter is no where near dead yet. My personal theory is they didn't expect loads of people choosing to massive amounts of others. In the past week, I've had several people with absurd numbers of follows (one with 60k, one with 90k) - that's insane. Twitter has hired some top talent to address these issues and got new rounds of funding to assist. Personally I still love twitter and find it a different and useful complement to Friendfeed. - Doug Brooks
I'm on it less than before, but use Twitter as a gateway to more reliable socnets like FriendFeed, where we can have longer discussions. The community on Twitter still merits having an account there. Can we be hopeful that now that they got another round of funding, they'll FINALLY find ways to make it more reliable? - Cathryn Hrudicka
FriendFeed is certainly a very reliable Twitter client, I'm finding. It's nice to get everything that everybody's doing -- not just what they tweet -- inside a feed as well. - Jared Smith
Twitter peaked during the early primaries, it was an incredible learning and connecting tool. It's not doing anything for me anymore. So have I moved on? Not exactly, because nothing has come along to replace it. FF is very different, and most of the people I connected with on Twitter aren't here. I've always said it's about the people. Nothing else. - Dave Winer
Compared to mobile carriers and cable companies, Twitter does quite well. It's free and works most of the time. I'm sure things will get better given all the $$$ they've raised recently. - Mike Reynolds
As long as it takes for FriendFeed to handle SMS posting. - Rubin Sfadj
I am getting there. - Steve Rubel
As wonky as Twitter is, I'm still preferring it to Plurk. FF is gaining steam with me, but it still seems more static to me somehow. Haven't pulled enough people into my circle here yet, I suppose. - abacab from twhirl
unreliable? I would say unpopular ;) I would leave twitter If I could follow ALL my friends and MORE interesting people in other place :) - Lora Lufark
still on twitter. Not sure when I will move out. - Thejesh GN
Excellent, a Twhinge (Twitter + whinge) thread! In all seriousness... I posted about this situation at Broadcasting Brain today. I am feeling fed up and having the Reply function on the Twitter Web app disabled doesn't help at all. - Mark Dykeman
I prefer Plurk's timeline and threaded comments, but the community doesn't seem to be present quite yet. Once the community exists, I'd be happy to switch. But something like FF will keep me happy in the meantime. - Jason Ziglar
Until Plurk gets more users I'm sticking with Twitter. - Oli from the-iBlog from fftogo
excalipoor, but he is Rafe Needleman, an influential and popular online tech journalist. People will follow him wherever he goes as well. - Thomas Hawk
Have you given it up? Me neither. That's 'cause we forget how much it sux when its working right. - shelisrael1
There have been plenty of opportunities for people to move off Twitter to clones. Since it hasn't happened yet, primarily because it is hard to bring your community with you, I don't expect it to happen ever. - Bob Ngu
Give up? I only just started - Phil Whelan
How expensive does gas have to get before people like me give up driving cars totally? :-) - Bassam Islam from twhirl
Twitter indeed has its limitations. It is NOT a replacement for the fluidity of IRC, it is not viable as a live conference tool, at so many junctures it introduces latency, this is all before we touch upon its infrastructure, reliability, and ability to scale. Perhaps Bezos' infusion of cash will see to thoee last points - David Blumenstein from twhirl
For me the thing the twitter offers is the ability to sms info quickly to a bunch of people. Events like Siggraph twitting about the next events or the results of events as they happen to people at the shows. Imagine if the SF Giants twittered player info at their games or things like that. I do agree that it's horrible for conversation, but one-way info is a perfect use for it. - Doug Brooks
i will never give up on you rafe - Allen Stern
Fortunately it's not too hard for me to move over here. Most of my (and yours, I'd argue) followers on Twitter are ghosts (long gone) or following for reasons other than shear interest. Twitter is still useful for ephemeral exchanges and generally telling the world how undercaffeinated I am. But for interesting links/thoughts and level of conversation this is where I'm now planting my flag. - Jim Stanger
totally agree with Jim Stanger - Giovanni De Stefano
I like FriendFeed more every day. But I miss Twitter. - Rafe Needleman
I don't rely on it for communication. To me it's like graffiti on a wall. I'll keep reading it, but if they repaint the wall, c'est la vie. - Patrick Beard
As long as there is a backup, like FriendFeed, I think Twitter can go out regularly... for me, this works. For all the good Twitter-based projects or business models, Twitter is running out of charm.... - shanebe
5 days continuous ... maybe. People have built huge followings. They're not abandoning them. - Charlie Anzman
New money and new people coming in to Twitter. Users have been through all of this and stayed so far...they will wait it out. Twitter will and must fix the architecture once and for all and conclude on a viable business model and be off to the races. I'm as sick of the flying whale as anyone else but inexplicably I haven't left...and I don't think I will. - Paul Marshall
Once the A-listers leave Twitter, it's over. - Dossy Shiobara
We're all getting tired of the hit/miss feature set and repeated, unplanned downtimes. Twitter management of their app is beyond weak, it's moved over to an untenable business and is completely unreliable at this point. I do think they are taking active steps to rectify the instability of their current app / db environments, but it may be too little, too late. - Susan Beebe
you lot have very short memories - ebay, amazon, google, world of Warcraft all had issues when they hit viral explosive growth - icq, hotmail - I could go on and on. The fact that there is this much heat about it shows that it will get through the hurdles and move on. - Ed Dale
a full week downtime 24/7 - Chris Harris
It's unreliable? Seems to break down often enough to be broken down reliably. - Jim Turner
how unreliable is unreliable is the real question - Loic Le Meur
Having been around the internet block a number of times...crap happens to the best of them at the worst of times - Renee Hendricks

What Drives More Traffic to Flickr Images, Twitter, FriendFeed or Pownce on Flickr - Photo Sharing! - http://www.flickr.com/photos...
What Drives More Traffic to Flickr Images, Twitter, FriendFeed or Pownce on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Interesting how FriendFeed out trafficked Twitter. It must be the added incentive of the thumbnailed visual. - Andrew Dobrow
I have similarly seen a big decrease in Twitter traffic, even for the simple "New Blog Post" updates I'll do. It used to be sending those would get a few dozen curious visitors. Now it's maybe a handful, and instead, the traffic originates from FriendFeed. Either the transition has happened, or it's an early tell and Twitter could get its groove back. - Louis Gray
i think FF will bypass pownce in 3-6 months though. it is so easy to "Like" something and that just pushes an image up so many times on someones friendfeed. - Chris Harris
FriendFeed is my top external referrer to Flickr. I rarely post links to photos on twitter, and I've become inactive on Pownce, so this makes sense. - Andy Roth
I'm not sure how much downtime Twitter has had in the past 16 hours or so that this image has run but that could also have an influence as to the traffic directed from Twitter. - Thomas Hawk
"like" already won't push up old messages (changed a few weeks ago - it will push up messages in your Comments/Likes page, but not in the general "Friends" page. I'm not sure how to describe the behavior if I like something of "user X" on "user X"s home page - it seems to push up very-old articles if that person has very few "liked" articles.). FriendFeed can probably keep adjusting the window for "old" from 1 day to a few hours as FriendFeed grows. - Mitchell Tsai
My stats show way more traffic comes from FriendFeed than from Twitter. - Mack D. Male
Another variable is the number of people using Hide. Sure you have X subscribers but not all of those see your photos. I hide your Flickr photos because I subscribe to them already via RSS and want to avoid the duplication. - Jamie
Jamie, certainly "hide" would diminish the effect of subscribers on FF. I'm sure that there are users who hide 100% of flickr photos entirely for instance. Still I suspect the image was seen more times on FF but clicked through more times from Pownce. I suspect that the audience at Pownce might generally prefer digital media content over text content. Certainly the larger size view of the image on Pownce might also contribute to this. - Thomas Hawk
Most of my Flickr traffic still comes from Flickr itself and Yahoo Image Search. Friendfeed traffic is negligible. - Morton Fox
i love the community that's a part of flickr but am also liking that i see flickr images in the ff flow from folks that i may not have as contacts on flickr yet - good overlap... - mike "glemak" dunn
Traffic comes from social site where *you* invest time. FF works for Thomas 'cuz it allows flickr visuals to be seen unlike others in list. Again, spend time @ socnet site, see traffic. Pretty simple. Really :) - Barbara K. Baker
Morton, agreed on that. Far more traffic is derived organically from inside Flickr, but I suspect that as services like Pownce, Twitter and FriendFeed gain popularity that they will become a larger factor. - Thomas Hawk
Other things to consider is format. Twitter=link FF=small Pownce=medium and exposure. I see more "noise" here and Twitter vs the very few people I follow on Pownce - Andrew Smith
semantic tag: trend; Friendfeed+ Twitter- - Sean McBride
Still a continuing increase here from Friendfeed. Wednesday's piece (on Friendfeed) took over 135 hits +/- from right here. Not shabby - Charlie Anzman
My FF traffic to Flickr is small but it will soon rise to Top 10 status in a stream that is 3 yrs old. - Russellreno
Are people using your images on their Tumblr? If so, how do you feel about that? - Shey, Jamaican of FF
A very interesting comparison, Thomas, which leads me to reconsider my limited use of Pownce, although I think you may attract more traffic with your photos than many of us would attract for a blog post or other type of non-photo linked URL, but that's a hunch—I'm tempted to try the same study with blog posts, audio links, video, and other types of linked URLs.. - Cathryn Hrudicka
Thomas Hawk

OK, when I took a photo from Baker Beach at night, I got locked in the park. Embarrassing for a while, but at least I got my photos. - William Beem

FriendFeed “Likes” Compatibility Index Pre-Pre-Pre Alpha - http://thestatbot.com/2008...
Very nice. It'd be interesting to see what type of statistics community arises out of Friendfeed like it did with Twitter: I can only imagine the stats that would satiate my ego (#15 on Louis Gray and Robert Scoble's list, yes!) - Mark Trapp
Are you sure you didn't forget a "pre"? :) - Bwana ☠
So Shey is the #1 Louis Gray stalker? *runs* - Bwana ☠
Yes! My stalking of Louis Gray is working! - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Good stuff. I'm not too surprised that Scoble 'liked' entries my a wider variety of people.. Robert is all about following an enormous number of folks and finding news in the noise. - Phil G
Mitchell Tsai tops both Scoble and my lists (http://twurl.nl/x1lnzh): just who is Mitchell Tsai? - Mark Trapp
Submitted my FLCI calculation request via blog comments. - Ontario Emperor
I'm ahead of Scoble? Impossible! ;-) - Hutch Carpenter
Yuvi is at it again, doing the best analysis of our behaviors I've seen. Interesting. What's real interesting is that I'm following 2,500 people, yet only a small number of those actually do anything that get me to "like" their posts. - Robert Scoble
I just love to like that's all :-) - Dobromir Hadzhiev
I don't "Like" content nearly as much as I should, obviously. - Nathaniel Payne
Great stuff as always Yuvi! Thanks for sharing it. - Thomas Hawk
The spread of likes is partly impacted by the number of people you follow and interact with. So far, I've kept my audience here medium-sized, while Scoble tends to cast his net wider. That's why Yuvi returns the data he does. Also, I would assume that Shey is following fewer people than me. As for Mitchell, he is a rare example of the elusive FriendFeed likes/comments addict. - Louis Gray
Robert, how many do you actually read? I follow far fewer people, but I find that I'm occasionally dipping my toe into the stream, but missing a lot of stuff that happens. Or do you count on interesting stuff rising to the top of the feed? - Ontario Emperor
Ontario: I look at FriendFeed probably 500 times a day. I don't catch everything, but the good stuff does come back up (and there's duplication, which sends me on a search for the original item, too). On a day when I'm really able to stay engaged on FriendFeed? I'd guess I look at 70% of everything that comes through. On the other hand, I'd guess I see 99% of stuff that is important (and I've noticed that 80% or more of what's important to FF'ers gets on TechMeme anyway within about an hour). - Robert Scoble
This is the first time I found the stats of the statbot really interesting. I hope to see more! - Meryn Stol
It seems that alot of the names on the lists are some of the most active people on FF. - Thomas Hawk
@Louis I follow 262, I'm sure you follow more - Shey, Jamaican of FF
@ThomasHawk: Your list: http://thestatbot.com/2008... - Yuvi
Sorry to be so negative but knowing the way FriendFeed (and it's API) work I would like some clarification on how the script works. Consider this situation: user A likes link 1 from user C, user B likes link 1 from user D. IF Yuvi is basing likes on "links" and not "entries" then sure the data makes sense. But if he is basing common likes on "entries" then user A and user B would not be related despite liking the same link. It really depends on what YOU consider "likes" compatibility. - Benjamin Golub
Great stuff Yuvi. I made Scoble's Like list. Yay :-) - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Benjamin: the methodology Hutch and I used, and I have no reason to doubt Yuvi is using, is that a connection counts when you and the other person both like a story. So things you publish that the person likes and things that person publishes that you like don't count (since you can't like things you publish). - Mark Trapp
@Benjamin: Understandable. I count "Entries", not Links. So, if one person Likes a Delicious link to something and another person likes the original story, they aren't counted as being shared... - Yuvi
Really nice... Post the code. - Alex Sauceda
man I want this as a feature. - Tim Hoeck
Ontario Emperor's: http://thestatbot.com/2008... (Aside: Everytime I hear that name, the "Emperor has no clothes!" somehow makes it's way into my mind... ;)) - Yuvi
@Mark I don't think you get what I mean. Lets say I like this ENTRY and someone else likes another ENTRY which is a share of this LINK. Yuvi's current script would *not* consider that as a connection. There is a big difference between an entry (http://friendfeed.com/e...) and a link (http://thestatbot.com/2008...) in FriendFeed because of it's spread out nature. - Benjamin Golub
Awesome Yuvi, thanks! I seem to be near the top of most lists so far. What does it mean? - Shey, Jamaican of FF
I see what you're saying now, Benjamin. That would be somewhat intense to process, based on my knowledge of the API, but not impossible. I think it just highlights one more reason why Friendfeed could really use story aggregation. - Mark Trapp
@Shey: It means that you like things a lot (or rather, like a lot of things). Maybe you're a bot? :P - Yuvi
@Benjamin - You raise a good point. It kind of cycles back to the duplicate links issue. Maybe as Yuvi iterates through this, he can collect common Likes across duplicate links. But this is a great start Yuvi! - Hutch Carpenter
The method Benjamin suggests would be more accurate, but yes, more "complex" to process (since we can't get all the entries someone has liked, and we can't get all the entries with a particular link) Friendfeed, is this only-300-items bug getting fixed or not? - Yuvi
I will spare people - no nude pictures. Thanks. - Ontario Emperor
I'll have to check it later. For some reason (probably corporate's IE6 mandate), the comments aren't displaying properly. - Ontario Emperor
This doesn't display in IE6? Gotta look into that... - Yuvi
ALSO, IE6? Not even the way better IE7? - Yuvi
Me a bot? noooo.... - Shey, Jamaican of FF
Scoble is more social than Louis...interesting conclusion. - Duncan Riley
Mark: I'm a retired traveller/dancer, old-school geek circa 1976 (1st startup in 1987), and read a ridiculous amount (when in the reading mood. used to subscribe to 30-50+ magazines), but new to blogs. Mar 28, I shifted my personal bookmarks on-line to Del.icio.us (1,138 in 61 days, 19/day), which accounts for the vast majority of my "comments". I have two itsy-bitsy blogs, but those aren't mass-market - just for (1) spiritual entrepreneurs, esp. women & minorities (2) travel & dance for personal friends. - Mitchell Tsai

@ev, if it's people like me, with large follower numbers, that are breaking Twitter, I will willingly withdraw.

What's "large" ... if this baby's gonna scale... you'll eventually have hundreds of thousands or millions of followers... if it can't scale now what about the future? - paul terry walhus from Alert Thingy
@ev - Remember, if Leo, Scoble and Arrington get off of twitter, then twitter would lose some important value!! Thus I disagree. - Susan Beebe
BTW, when did you get over your brand name objections? Do you have a post on how your resolved the Twitter vs. TWiT issue? - Michael Markman
I disagree that the big players give twitter most of its "content". I mean it totally depends what you use twitter for. If you use it as a news aggregator from technology evangelists, then you might be right. In my thinking I use it for much more then just seeing what Scoble or techncrunch has to say. What do you think? - Akshay Dodeja
I like the blend of "following" (& maybe conversing) with people I don't know yet, and connecting with people I do know. That's why I also like Spock. You can "friend" people that you know, and also "follow" the newsfeeds of others that you don't know (i.e. Politicians, movie stars, famous authors, sports stars). --- P.S. Spock just changed their interface to mimic FriendFeed. - Mitchell Tsai

I have added a couple of favourites on Flickr recently but they haven't shown up here! - Joe Dawson
From where do you access such a specific feed on FriendFeed? - Chris Farrugia
@Joe, I think Raoulpop said that you needed to unsubscribe and then resubscribe your Flickr feed to enable the import of favorites. - roel
@Joe Like @roel said, but I've also found there is a little bit of a delay on when the favs appear in the friendfeed stream. This is really getting to be my most used part of friendfeed, to see what other people fav to discover new photos and photogs. - Jeremy Hall
Watching your Fav stream show up in FriendFeed has actually gotten me to Fav more photos. Having that show up in FF seems like a real bonus. - TranceMist
Heh, I had forgotten I was even streaming to this account. Thanks. - Tim Cooper
