It looks as though this is in an unusal file format. I've contacted Dr Willmott to let him know.
- Dr Jo Badge
I'm sorry this is not working at present. As I've said in a previous thread, I've contacted Dr Dickens to try to correct the format - you do not need to access this before writing the report (the information in the lecture is far too detailed for the expt you are writing up)
- Dr Chris Willmott
where do we have to hand in the microbiology practical booklets tomorrow?
Are you using a mac by any chance? apparently there have been reported issues with it. I reckon you would have to install the toolpack on any windows operating system. Hope this was helpful.
- Munaf khamisa
It's not that as I'm using Windows 7, but thanks anyway.

The first week of semester 2 has whizzed by, which is a huge relief because I’m exhausted, the new timetable is definitely going to take a bit of getting used to. Especially Thursday’s! I have a lot less free time then last term, but with the free time I plan to utilise it productively by keeping up-to-date with lecture notes, practical write-ups and so forth, thus not allowing my work load to accumulate, which hopefully should result in a more relaxed stress free weekend. Is there a minimum world limit for #MyDiary entries?

I found this useful link related to Dr Christine Wells’s #BS1015 lectures. You may find it useful for revision as each of the sub-topics have been condensed to one page.

Just looking over the practice questions on Blackboard for the #BS1015 practical exam on Friday. Shouldn't Q3 be 'oxidising NADH' as opposed to reducing?
Go to 'Practicals ('wet' & 'dry'' sessions)' in 'Course Documents', and scroll down.
- Faaiza Museji
You are right. LDH catalyses the conversion of pyruvate to lactate, concomitantly oxidising NADH to NAD+. The latter reaction is accompanied by a decrease in absorbance at 340 nm

Relieved that the #CH1070 multiple-choice exam is now over, and also happy that I passed, but with more preparation I think I could’ve done a lot better. Hopefully this will be the case for the January exams!
I don't think we can resit if we get over 40%. I spoke to my mentor about this a while ago, and we can only retake a test if we fail it. Though, I'm not sure if multiple choice exams work the same way.

Pleased that the #MB1030 presentation is now over. Now on to some Chemistry revision.
We never got to see them next year. The idea of the past papers is to give you an idea of what the exam in January will be like and how the questions are asked.

IMO having access to mark schemes can be a really helpful revision tool and the department should look in to making these available. It certainly helped me during a-levels, as it allows you to grasp the level of detail required for different types of questions and also helps you understand where you are making mistakes. I think it would've been useful to have allowed us to view the...

I think that having to find out the answers for myself made me remember them better in the exam. If you are guessing answers you don't understand the material well enough and need to work on it. If you do that you will know that your answer is right without a mark scheme. The help sessions are there to help with with material that you don't understand.

100% on #BS1010 Molarities & Dilutions Assessment. It was a little tricky, but got there in the end :)
Found this fun and lighthearted video explaining the discovery of RNAi, for which the founders won a Nobel Prize in 2006.This relates well with the #BS1015 Nobel Prize presentations from a few weeks ago. - http://www.youtube.com/watch...
#FridayReflection Google Reader - addiction or annoyance? How many feeds are you subscribed to on Google Reader and how often do you go there? Could you live without it?
Google Reader is neither an addiction nor an annoyance. I think impartial would be a better description of my attitude towards it. Given, I haven’t contributed as much as I’d hoped, partly because I’ve found many of the articles don’t relate to my degree modules or they are too complex. But that is going to change drastically, as I want to improve my current predicted mark for FriendFeed. I plan to achieve this by subscribing to more feeds, as I’m currently only subscribed to 5, this will hopefully broaden the scope of articles and journals available to me that contain information and research that are relevant to my modules.

Try and find some more feeds that suit you better - ask here for help?

Has anyone heard anything about when we receive our marks for the genomics and water essays?
We get the water essay back next week in the tutorial. I'm guessing the genomics essay will be given back to us some time next week too.

The following article relates to the topic I have been allocated for the #MB1030 assessed presentation. Statins are a class of drug that are prescribed to patients with an abnormally high level of cholesterol; they work by reducing cholesterol synthesis in the liver. And although low cholesterol is usually considered a good thing, a recent study shows that a low level of cholesterol could have links to reduced brain function. The study found a link between untreated diabetes (which affects cholesterol synthesis) and the reduction of the amount of cholesterol available to the brain. The study involved monitoring the activity of genes involved in cholesterol production in the hypothalamus of mice with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and comparing results against those of healthy mice. The results showed that brain activity was reduced by 25 per cent in both groups of diabetic mice. But when these were treated with insulin, the effect was reversed. This suggests that drugs that lower...

cholesterol, such as Statins, may also be putting some individuals at risk for cognitive problems.
- Faaiza Museji
wow interesting, so what should we aim for a lower cholesterol level or higher ?? :p
- Syeda Maham Batool
Probably somewhere in the middle, always seems to be the safer option :P I didn't realise just how important cholesterol was to our bodily functions though, the press have a tendency to place a greater emphasis on the damage it does and give very little attention to the negative effect of reduced levels. But research indicates that cholesterol deficit, could affect appetite regulation,...

That was a really interesting article. Although I'm not doing about statins, it is relevant to the lipids topic in #BS1015 as well, especially after the tutorial about cholesterol. I never knew a QUARTER of the body's cholesterol was used in the brain! And myelin sheaths of nerve cells contain two thirds of the CNS's cholesterol.

The #BS1015 tutorial for my group was cancelled this week. Does anyone know if it’s going to be rescheduled?
Mine was too but I don't think that it is going to be rescheduled. We'll probably cover the material that we missed in the next tutorial:)
