I have to say, I'm quite fond of the FB live feed. It's a bit overwhelming in itself, but paired with a friend group filter, I find it very useful and entertaining :) - Adam Lasnik
that's very interesting adam. I'm going to have to look into this! - Michael Fidler via twhirl
Do you consider live or news feed as a key/necessary feature of any web app? What do you think? - Jan Horna
I saw it, but thought it was a feature that was available all along. I thought i was just overlooking it's an awesome feature though something like that would be awesome on friendfeed, realtime liking and commenting from friends sweeet. - Gordon Swaby
Just got my first comment on a FB livefeed yesterday... not that bad. Considering their audience, they just might win the deal... - Fabrice Epelboin via twhirl
At this point, the only place were FB lags behind FF is with the ability to import feeds from outside sites. Very few choices on FB right now. - Bob Blunk
Bob, I disagree with that. FF still, in my experience, has far more robust and interesting discussions. Most of what I get on FB is "Cute pic!" or "yeah, that was funny! So doing anything for Labor day?" I think FF and FB are inherently different and will remain pretty distinct. I see FB as the place where I learn about what my friends are up to, how they're feeling. In contrast, FF for me is about what my friends find interesting. Very, very different. - Adam Lasnik
For the moment, they have the feeds that matter tho'. How many FB users are using the more niche services. - Ross Bailey

librarians are here too ... are they geeks? .. well, yes, sort of, now that you mention it - Gregory Lent
agree - atalmatal
No. I think Friendfeed has a lot to offer for non-geeks. Just not in it's current early stages (swamped with tech). - Mo Kargas
You mean that normal people have no clue how to process information or work efficiently and be happy with offerings of the like of facebook while geeks do not enjoy as much normal everyday stuff normal people enjoy? Absolutly. - Nicole Simon
Facebook is online presence for [mostly] non-online people. FriendFeed is for those who are able to appreciate the steady flow of information online, mostly geeks. Grasping the concept takes too much time for a non-geek ;-) I agree. - Lech
What if you have both? Am I a geekier version of everyone else? - Shannon
agree until i can only see the people i've added to my friend list and not friends of friends information then i doubt anyone else will care. - Jonathan Jesse
FF geeker than FB:) - Igor Poltavskiy
What if you use the FF application from within Facebook? - Mike Boudreaux via fftogo
Isn't Facebook trying to *be* Friendfeed these days with the new look? I agree here, though, my non-web-wired friends and family are on FB, but not FF :( - Michael Pick via twhirl
in the same way as computers _used to be_ for geeks, agree - Dani Radu
not so agree! - nytreporter
Facebook is for women. Most men will just keep in touch with friends on an ad-hoc basis -- and we're happy enough with that. And what's with all this Relationship Barometer crap, or whatever its called? That's just kooky imo. Like I'm going to advertise the fact that 'Its Complicated'. Rubbish. - john conroy
Agreed. - David Cook via twhirl
I check Facebook regularly and last I checked I wasn't a woman! - Joe Dawson (beta)
Somewhat agree. Facebook has indeed become mainstream, while FriendFeed is currently populated by early-adopters (which many read as "geeks"). - Nick Mutton
FriendFeed is an aggregator and conversation spot for the open Web (which is under attack). Google can get to everything here. It can't get to everything in Facebook. Another way to recast it? FriendFeed is for everyone who wants to be public. Facebook is for everyone who wants to support a walled garden. There's more than geeks here, by the way. Do you want proof? Do some searches. Here's one for quilting: http://beta.friendfeed.com/sea... - Robert Scoble
I'll pay that one Robert, there's more geeks here for now. Do you think it will ever expand out to non-geeks? - Mo Kargas
for now yes. Was facebook for geeks when they only had 100k users? - ouriel
At least I can share a link from FriendFeed with everyone. Can you do that with Facebook? - Orli Yakuel
WOW, I never knew I was a Geek....good to know. - Scot Duke
Agree-I find more sophisticated users here, myspace seems so highschoolish for me always has. - orionstarr
as for the being public issue: people in FB really share everything, and indeed this happens mostly because they're 'non-online' 'low-tech' or whatever you may call them. people in FF still think are in a protected fence since it's geekier and not mainstream yet. the question is: how much do we care about google when we feel we are in a group of friends (or birds of the same feather anyway)? - Elvira
facebook is for college students, myspace is for entertainment, linkedIn is for business, friendfeed is an experiment - paisley via twhirl
Myspace is a dive bar - more fun if you're there for the music or have tattoos and are kind of slutty. Facebook is the posh bar everyone wants to get into - it used to be invite only but now they killed the cover and are letting everyone in. Friendfeed is the LAN party in someone's basement........ - George Smith
I'm really a non-geek. I'm more comfortable with the user interface on Facebook. But, of course, I just used the term "user interface" on FriendFeed -- so maybe I need to rethink my possible geeky-tude. - Cheryl Rice
I hope not. - Vincent van Wylick

Agree. Same with Twitter – which is why I like both, and like to keep them distinct. - Dan Byler
for uber geek, yes... - Fabrice Epelboin via twhirl
I suppose it sort of is at the moment. However, I expect that FriendFeed will eventually become mainstream - perhaps not as mainstream as Facebook, but getting there. I think it's all down to the fact that the usual methods of communication on FF and FB differ quite a bit, and so they cater to different audiences. FB has applications and walls and all that, but FF has discussion. FB has, in my experience, a more personal touch than FF. Could just be, though, that I don't know anyone on FF in real life... - A Bat
Disagree. - Louis Gray
disagree - friendfeed != facebook - Morgan
I was hoping FF rooms would provide a good way to have conversations focused on non-tech topics, but so far they don't seem to be taking off much. - Costa Walcott
I'm using Friendfeed in Facebbok so I'm everyone else's geek! - Mike L
there is anyone else? really? - MAK The Water Boy
There is so little parallel functionality, I wonder why there is the pervasive insistence to group these two together. So, disagree. - JC unwired
I disagree, cause of the fact that there's no FunWalls, SuperWalls doesn't mean it can't go mainstream in the near future. - Tibor Holoda
I use facebook, twitter and friendfeed and linkedin too - what does that make me? A friend to be followed, requested, added to your network maybe... - Julie Watt
disagree: if "geek" stands for complicated and difficult to use, facebook wins over ff - Federica Bellag
FriendFeed is for paople I don't know. Facebook is for my immediate real friends. I put my geeky stuff on FriendFeed/Twitter, etc...and for personal stuff with my more generic friend audience, I put appropriate content on Facebook. - Todd
I don't consider myself a geek, but I love FF. - ::Kristen::
geeks->multiple and extensive online presence and usages->need to aggregate->FF - Hayk
youth and simple folk-> some usage of the Internet-> need to communicate-> some platform where everyone is-> Facebook - Hayk
Disagree. Friendfeed is for everyone. We geeks have a strong presence here, but there are non-geek communities as well. I suppose if you don't know any non-geeks on friendfeed, you won't see many at all. The problem lies in the fact that many non-geeks THINK that friendfeed is for geeks. If more non-geeks came over, those communities would grow. Now, do I win a prize for saying "geeks" the most times in a comment? - Slippy Lane
Disagree. Friendfeed is for real-time topical conversation and more. Facebook is to connect, introduce, sneaky e-mail .... (and not play Scrabble) - Charlie Anzman
i would categorize friendfeed as thought and opinion exchange, while facebook is for networking purposes.. - Stefan Lafloer
Nope, this geek still isn't into Friendfeed. Facebook gets used (finally) with connecting with my RL friends, as well as social media ones, and reconnecting with folks from high school, college and previous places I've worked. Facebook = social exchanges and Friendfeed = idea exchanges and media sharing. But I still rarely use Friendfeed as I find the interface too cumbersome. Back to Twitter..... - Rob Usdin

i'm happy band section still work in muxtape, would be the damn bad if it was not working for us (buzzworkers) - Ben Borges
That one is an easy answer. The crazy thing is, I still see artists spew the same tired RIAA line about down sales = piracy while real innovators are creating their own marketing hype. Many, such as hiphop artists, are moving to labels such as Koch where they press the records/CD's/publish downloads online and let the artist take care of marketing and promotion. This way the artist keeps more money, so they don't have to sell 100K to 500K to break even with the label. What are you paying for anyway? A video no one will see? Payola to radio that no one listens to? When an artist knows how to create buzz, (concerts, you tube, web) they can afford to bypass the ineffective promotion provided by these labels. - Eric @ CS Techcast
protectionism is everywhere ... does it work? seems to ... at least for awhile - Gregory Lent
If the artist is doing their own promotion, what is the point of the record company again? - stretta via twhirl
Interesting post about Pandora on the edge of closeing due to increased royalty fees. http://arstechnica.com/news.ar... - Bryan Thatcher via twhirl
The point of a record company can still be a central distribution point. Some could maybe handle it themselves, but I would image distributing CDs and setting up with digital distributors is still logistical nightmare for a single artist to handle on their own. - Eric @ CS Techcast
Matthew - If the artist is able to produce and master their own music with professional quality, there's little need for the record company since you can always start your own. Many smart artists have done this because it funnel's the bulk of the CD sales into their pockets. - Jim McCusker
Exactly. I was responding to Erics comment. - stretta via twhirl
Eric - there are options for artists. cdbaby will set up digital distribution with dozens of companies. There is no need for a record company between the artist and fans. - stretta via twhirl
Matthew, that's pretty cool, but can they still get you stocked at Target and Best Buy? If they can then cool, but I didn't see anything on their website about that. A label like Koch can. This is why some will still want to go with a label with established ties to retail and distribution. - Eric @ CS Techcast
Eric, getting stocked at Best Buy and Target only make sense if you're undertaking a nation wide promotional campaign, and if you're doing that, you're talking about a huge investment that is way, WAY beyond the scope of the independent artist. If you want to sell a physical product to a nationwide audience, the amazon advantage program is where it is at. - stretta via twhirl
It's quickly becoming a management-based industry, with managers replacing record labels. As artists are able to control their own production, distribution, promotion, etc there becomes the need for someone to help organize and run these aspects. The manager steps in to focus on the business and mechanics, freeing the artist to be 'creative' and/or tour ... which, of course, used to be a purpose the record label served. - M. Donaldson
More simply, getting stocked at Best Buy isn't the issue. Creating the demand that merits getting stocked at Best Buy is, and if you've done that, you don't need Koch. - stretta via twhirl
Having sat on the sidelines and about to embark on my own music career, I'm both excited and scared at the serious flailing about the music industry is doing. I'm confident I can get myself out there without the help/harm of a large record label -- either as an independent or on my own. There is *so much* opportunity to get real music out there that I'm not too worried about the distractions of the RIAA... - Tracy Ruggles
Tracy, this is the best time in history to be an independent musician IMO. I've done a major label stint as well as time on assorted indies and I'm personally having more fun (and making a more consistent living at it) now that I'm on my own. The advantage nowadays goes to the most creative rather than the one with the biggest marketing budget, and that's really exciting. - M. Donaldson
Please tell me that is a rhetorical question right? - John via twhirl
What's a music industry? - Pascal
The recent Bloc Party release is another example of the compromise model that will work for a portion of artists, labels, and consumers... release quality digital format at low cost (not free) ahead of leaks. Release compelling physical product shortly after including extras for top fans. - Amir Gharaat
Bryne and Eno are using the same exact model Amir refers to ... their new album was released digitally yesterday, but won't be out physically until November 30. A special edition of the CD will contain extra tracks. http://www.everythingthathappe... ... it's like the early adopters are putting a down payment on the manufacturing of the final product. - M. Donaldson
My husband is a recording artist, composer and engineer. The industry is so competetive with great talent abounding. However, talent is a dime a dozen. My advice is to do music because you love it and would rather do nothing else. - Taryn Merrick via twhirl

Goal: Backup Blog. I've been doing an 'email backup' for some months, but it's currently not sending the 12mb to my email clients, either the file size is too large (my gmail is relatively empty) or wordpress is having a hard time extracting and sending. I was able to download file to C drive, is webstrategy_wp_20080813_046.sql.gz (12674KB) the right backup file? The file size and extension type would suggest so. - Jeremiah Owyang
there are plugins for that - Allen Stern

@jeremiah, I guess the attachment size limit in GMail is around 10 MB and I guess that is the problem you are getting any email now. The file name and type that you have specified is the right backup file. - Sudar
@Jeremiah, You can also configure the backup Plugin to store the backups in a folder on a server, since the filesize is pretty big. By the way, can I know the number of posts in your blog currently? Your backup files seems to be very big for some reason. - Sudar

Marketing isn’t just about numbers though – brand perception is equally important when looking at an overall campaign. By supplying readymade templates the McCain folks ensure a unified message goes out, but at what expense? The point of social media is the open exchange of many different ideas and viewpoints. A unified army of commenters all posting canned opinions is simply spam, and like the stuff that goes directly to my Junk e-mail folder, social media sites and users will either start blocking it, calling it out for what it is, or simply ignoring it. - alex de carvalho
