Nothing beats a great IPA. We had to make our own while we were sailing, Coopers makes a great IPA kit. I'll have to try the Firestone.. I hope it was good!

It's a silly notion of many of these 'techjournalists' that Twitter is the be-all-end-all of the web. Okay it's useful for some, but I can't get ALL my news from Twitter. I use Netvibes for the rest... Why can't these "techjournalists" understand that the two technologies can exist next to eachother, and perhaps even supplement eachother?
- Marcel de Jong
TCP is dead, as is HTTP. RSS can join the ranks of the dead, driving the internet silently in the background. Dave, I'd take this as a badge of honor. People say it's dead because it's "just another thing used to build out systems." You gotta have it, and you don't have to think about it. That's a great thing, I think. :-)
- Rob Fahrni
Thank you Rob. But I still don't like the word. It's ridiculously bad karma.
- Dave Winer
Akiva: Cotweet would be cool. I'm more familiar with TweetRiver. Posterous is a good one!
- Robert Scoble
Facebook... he he he... don't be silly!

Wow, this teaches me to pay more attention to bios: Jalada, I had no idea you were behind Twitterfall. It was used constantly at Gnomedex by everyone.

Hey Robert, I have a $100/mo Rackspace Cloud site, but I'm just a small blog and really can't justify spending that a month, so I'm trying to sell "chunks" of my site starting at $9.95/mo to others who are in similarly in my shoes. I'm doing it as perhaps a business opportunity, but also as a way to stay with the service and not go back to a shared managed host. I wonder how I can market this?
- Stephen Pickering

If you're going to show CoTweet and Seesmic, you definitely should show TweetDeck and HootSuite. It might also be a good idea to show some of the URL shorteners like bit.ly.

I love the "X is Dead" linkbait tactic. Just need to find the next thing to proclaim dead. How about Free? e.g. "Free is Dead"? or "The Long Tail is Dead"? or "The Black Swan is Dead"? or "The Tipping Point is Dead"? Mmmm...tasty.

It's the hardest, but also the most gratifying. I POUND my legs, and I see the results. I need to get off this crazy work schedule so I can go back to my workouts. It's been three weeks of crappy, workouts, that following five weeks off for the back injury. Legs are at zero again. Sigh...
- Rob Fahrni
Better than what I can say. I don't even squat anymore. How can you do legs with out squatting? It's the KING of all leg exercises.
- Jerry Fahrni
I'd switch over to Posterous in a second if I could just get rid of their logo in the header of my site there, tweak the CSS a bit, and use a third party comment system.

Will today be the day Robert discovers Weblogging? Enquiring minds want to know. But seriously, it's just another weblogging system, with a different tagline. You can post to your weblog via e-mail from all kinds of different systems. What makes Posterious different? Does it offer something the others don't? You're also very limited by them, at last check, you can't post to your own...

@Kahlil, that's good, didn't know that. Thanks for the correction, that's a very good thing. How about customizing the look, so you can't tell it's a Posterious weblog? Also, can I post to it from my favorite desktop weblog client, MarsEdit?
- Rob Fahrni
Posterous is so flexible and how they handle media files is just killer. It can be simple or more complex depending on your needs. Love it.
- Gus
I've been playing with Posterous a bit lately since they released the iPhone app. It's limited but will explore further.
- Kenley Neufeld
@Kahlil, is it safe to say Posterous is limited to posting via e-mail? That's what it looks like via the FAQ. That's why people are raving about it. It's VERY easy to post to your weblog from any e-mail service/client. That's nice. So what besides that makes it better than Blogger, WordPress, or many of the other established leading weblog publishing systems? That's the question that...

PicPosterous lets you share video that's longer than the email limit. That's handy.
- Tom Landini
Posterous for a private site is where it really shines. I have both, public and private, and the private one is amazing. Try it.
- Dominic Jones
Ended up ditching my personal WP site for posterous & loving it. @Rob the ease of posting and tweaking how things are disbursed is incredible. You can pick and choose per post which other sites you would like updated. The multiple photo upload is sweetomatic and they embed just about anything in a snap. I'm a fan and I thought I would live and die by WP.
- suecosby
Right now, Posterous = email in + tumblr-like blog + ping.fm-like out (duplicated content I actually find annoying). With more ways to automatically import, better support for discussions, and truly custom themes that I could host on my own subdomain (with my own HTML/CSS/JavaScript), it would have a lot of potential.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Posterous is fantastic, Tumblr too but one is mad to give up a self hosted blog in place those services. Respectively of course Steve Rubel.
- Benjamin Taylor
I've found that views on my Posterous posts have dropped like a ton of bricks. At first (a few weeks ago) I was getting 400-600 views per post. Last week it was more like 100 per post, now I'm hardly going over 10. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
We are actually crowd-sourcing our blog on Mugasha. Mugasha Aux is hosted on Posterous with custom theme (still in private beta). The cool thing about this blog is that the community and the Artists can post content on the blog. Artists can promote their music and events and fans can post stores about events or other music related things. We are terrible bloggers here at Mugasha so we decided why not ask the community to help us out. Posterous is setup really well to hand this. http://aux.mugasha.com/
- Akshay Dodeja
So you can created themes for Posterous?

That's definitely cool... but if they're still going to have that white block in the header with the Posterous logo that http://aux.mugasha.com has, looks like Tumblr will still have them beat in that area.
- Ken Sheppardson
@Ken Actually we decided to leave The Posterous bar on top to give them credit :) You can totally style that in any way you want.
- Akshay Dodeja
Nice, Akshay. Good to hear. Looking forward to seeing them go live with customization.
- Ken Sheppardson
Ken, Akshay, Kahlil -- we've got a revision to that top bar coming. You can expect as good an experience with Posterous as with Tumblr for full customization. Better, if we do it right. Thanks for all your support.
- Garry Tan
I started on posterous thanks to being talked into it (http://pingmicro.com/postero...). Hilariously, so far I don't see it as a challenger to tumblr at all. I do like FF and use it almost every day. @Robert RE "I have enough noise in my life. I don't need to have more" - isn't it a lot of noise having 26K subscriptions and 46K subscribers on your frf account? Folks don't give Frontier it's due respect. It is quite powerful, and with Dave driving it, it's VERY powerful. He's constantly adding new functionality to his toolset without changing Frontiers Engine. Yes, the UI is very minimal, but I think that's half the point. Once you master UserTalk, you can do quite a lot with it. I was just thinking about grabbing the OPML editor last night. I used Radio for a while a few years back, just never got into the scripting engine.
- Rob Fahrni
Thanks Rob. I think you're right about that -- there are so many things in the integration betw the editor and the object database and the scripting and the Internet -- I don't think anyone else has gotten there because it has to be done by a very small team with a drive toward the purpose over years and years. It's really hard to sustain that kind of momentum, but we did, for quite some time with a great team of people. I'm doing a project in there right now. :-)

The interesting thing for me is I think we have lost the definition of what a blog is. Everybody jumped up and down about what Steve Rubel did, but really I see his change as a shift of platform. If he posted that same content on wordpress, nobody would have said a word. Just because he did it on posterous and called it a lifestream, people took issue with it. So, what is our definition then?
- Robert
Dave - I read through the link you sent, thanks for the information. So, in what ways do you think posterous goes against this definition?
- Robert
from email
I think Steve still has a weblog, he's just submitting posts to it in a "different" way. Like Dave's link says a weblog is "... a hierarchy of text, images, media objects and data, arranged chronologically, that can be viewed in an HTML browser." Pretty much sums it up, I think. Steve's post is going to generate attention, and debate, but in the end it's a weblog.
- Rob Fahrni
Robert, I know you're asking Dave a question, but I don't think the Posterious way goes against the definition. If I'm not mistaken Radio could post via e-mail, and I know Blogger supports this feature. Maybe I need to dig into Posterious a bit more but isn't that what it does?
- Rob Fahrni
Rob - That is my point. This in my mind is one of the major problems with looking for a "new name" for these social products. We see it as something different because it is called something different. Posterous, from what I can see so far, allows for the writer to interact with their "weblog" in a different way, just as you said...
- Robert
from email
Dave - I think your "huh?" was towards me... We call Posterous a "life stream", I say it is a blog, that we have given a different name to. That is what I am saying.Rob - I agree with you 100%, and that is my point exactly. I keep reading these post about blogging being dead, or blogging being alive... but those that say they are not "blogging" are still "blogging" Maybe I am not making sense, but I hope I am...
- Robert
from email
Robert - Precisely! I think Posterious is trying to find a why to differentiate their product, so they've coined a new phrase. It's still a weblog, how the data arrives may be different, but it's just a weblog all the same. When I read Steve's story last night, from his new site, I thought I was going to find a link on it to something "new and innovative", then I realized I was AT the actualy site, his "life stream."
- Rob Fahrni
Rob - YES... That is what I am saying... Same with Tumblr in my view, it is a weblog... Blogging is not dead at all in my view...

Blogology is a still too young science, and definitio usually comes when plays are over. What I feel sad for is the lack of opportunity future literature and social behaviour experts will suffer not using post's content ( and graphics ) as sources for studying today's world zeitgeist. It's funny that this sentence and a few lines from Anthony Trollope's autobiography should have crossed paths in my consciousness on the same day, since it's almost the same idea, thrown back two temporal orders of magnitude. Trollope tells of a correspondent, a vicar, who had enjoyed his clerical novels but was upset by Lady Glencors'a contemplation of adultery in the Pallisers series....

This is silly. Blogging isn't defined by the tool, it's defined by who's doing it. Read the piece I pointed to. I don't mean click on the link and hit the Back buttton, click the link and READ.
- Dave Winer
Agreed, Dave. Heck, we blogged back in the day via FTP uploads; that's what moved you towards developing "Edit This Page", in fact (IIRC).

Dave - I did read through it, and I agree that a blog is NOT defined by a tool, I think that is what we have been saying. I do not see where we are at odds on our viewpoints, please expound.

This subject keeps coming back - blogging will never die.

Before Web 1.0 we listened, conversed, collaborated and then we wrote. Writing was the synthesis of all the thinking that occurred in the first steps. In the new medium, the thinking process is the streams, both personal and community. Blogging is the synthesis of this new kind of community thought process.
- Joolio
I think a large percentage of bloggers were really microbloggers, they just didn't have the correct apps to do that. The people that actually have something to say will keep blogging and those that just like to say something small or share something interesting will continue microblogging, or lifestreaming, or whatever variant you want to name it. Blogging is akin to publishing articles...

Question: Of those of you out there who use posterous, do you use it as a replacement of your blog, a mirror of your blog or something different?
- Curt Mercadante
One of the things I like about blogging is the ability to not finish a thought, not to try so hard to say all I have to say or say come to any definite conclusion in a single post. The unfinished thought is what encourages conversation. Let someone else add to your thought. Let others challenge your incomplete premise. I don't know everything, why pretend I do? My thoughts are never finished.
- Jack&Cleo
Wow, you're right Dave, scripting news was indeed VERY much a microblog. Interesting & thanks for pointing that out!
- Rick Cogley
Just because you can finish a thought, doesn't mean people will read it.
- Will Higgins™
Tell me about it. That happened earlier in this very thread. But at least you ca read it yourself.
- Dave Winer
Just as your diary became your journal and then your log, your log has become your stream. The web has become your life..... AND SO IT WAS, that in the year naught-nine, the web-log was renamed to life-stream, dissected, and it's pieces scattered about the hundreds of "cloud" services, from which it could fall as raindrops of thought, pinging here and there in an attempt to spread ideas to where they were needed the most.
- Joel Bennett
There's NOTHING wrong with brevity. There is a time and a place for discussion and lengthy discourse.
- Will Higgins™
Matthew DeVries: that covers definitions 1 and 2, yet the 3rd is an "incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result," where in this case the expected result was to explain how new platforms prevent thoughts from being finished, and the actual result was to the contrary :D

The last time people reacted this way to a famous music star dying was the day Elvis died. I was in elementary school and still remember my neighbors playing his music. Michael meant more to my life than Elvis.
Especially during the Thriller days. If you weren't there, you don't understand how crazy everyone was over MJ.
- Eric - seven eleven
Somehow I'm completely without emotion regarding MJ's death. No idea why.
- Gunnyman™
Same here Mona - I don't remember feeling this way about any celebrity's death before.
- Jesse Stay
Robert, what about John Lennon's death? That was also a huge jolt at the time.
- John E. Bredehoft
from fftogo
I'm sure there are watershed moments for every generation. Elvis passing was more a Baby Boomers thing (IMO) while MJ is probably more a GenX thing. No doubt these things will impact everyone differently. Still, it's odd waking up to such news this morning.
- Threepwood
Is it really that big of a deal? The guy was a freak and a child molester. Sure he was huge in the Thriller days, but his star is not only not as bright, but a little tarnished as well.
- MarkCarras
For me and my crew, the day Jerry Garcia died was met with a similar reaction. For me it was much more profound.
- nicholas einstein
John: yes. I think Elvis was bigger though.
- Robert Scoble
I liked his Thriller album and videos, but after that he seemed to go downhill. And the child molestation thing tainted how I felt about it.
- RobinDotNet
50 is young. But Michael started his professional career at an extremely young age, so he's a true flash.
- Louis Gray
I like his music too, but I don't like his actions.
- Andy
I agree completely with Mona and Jesse, this is the first time that I feel like someone really close died, even though I never got a chance to meet him.
- Diego Espinoza V.
@MarkCarras ...and Elvis died on his toilet or something. So close to his passing most people are choosing to remember the GOOD things he did in his life.
- Bryan Zirkel
I wonder if people will try to whitewash over his history as a child molester and just focus on his fame?
- MarkCarras
I've never understood the way people worshipped him even now, years after he has done anything successful.
- RobinDotNet

- Jason Nunnelley
What about when John Lennon died? Was that bigger than MJ's death?
- Sam Houston
I remember all too well when Elvis died, I was 9 years old, standing on Paige street in Lindsay, California, playing with my friends. Weird, how you remember things like that?
- Rob Fahrni
No disrespect to MJ but I think the same reaction would be happing right now if it was Madonna.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I wonder if Madonna would get more coverage, actually... I preferred her as an artist.
- Tamar Weinberg
I'm too young to really have been a part of the big days of MJ, but I still LOVED his music. I hope he's remembered fondly. lots of stuff in the media about him that's not good. I choose to ignore a lot of it
- Chris Brakebill
Can't believe it really happened. Bigger for me than elvis, lennon, cobain or even diana. I hope people remember him for the brilliant musician that he was and not his other antics.
- Raj Narayan
Folks, the real reason we react with such a deep personal response when a celeb like this dies is that it smacks us in the face with our own mortality. We identify ourselves a little with these celebs, whether we like, approve or even appreciate them as artists. I've been listening to Michael Jackson music since he was a teenager. I don't like seeing artists that were popular when I was a teen dying because it reminds me my time/era is fading just like that of my parents.
- Jason Nunnelley
@MarkCarras what happened to the presumption of innocence? He was never tried on the first case due to lack of evidence, and acquitted on all counts on the second one
- Juan Tarrío
@Helen - I remember the Diana situation too, and all the hype around it.
- Tyson Key
Wow, what a bold statement. Jason, do you know me? Do you know the reason why this hits so close to home for me? What if I told you the very first cassette tape given to me by my dead mom was Michael Jackson's Thriller? Think twice before yapping like a know it all.
- Mona Nomura
i think of john lennon & frank sinatra in comparison to how big a legend michael was. the difference is, i grew up listening to michael jackson. sad day.
- Jim Halligan @jim
Mona, I'm not sure how your statement is incongruous with my own. Sounds like you agree.
- Jason Nunnelley
Juan Tarrio -- I would have felt that way too, if according to papers on the smokinggun from the first child molestation trial (the one he settled out of court) didn't reveal that the kid knew personal specific details about MJ's personal parts. Ick. I can't believe I just typed that.

John Lennons death was under different circumstances, he was murdered and also coming back with a record from what I heard reported on Sky. I was too young for John Lennon so for me the closest comparison is with Princess Diana. RIP
- Joe Dawson
Never an Elvis fan, but I was a huge Beatle fan, so John Lennon's death was a shock to me. I do enjoy Michael Jackson's music.....unfortunately I found the man questionable at best, but also feel sad for him dying at such an early age. At least he no longer has to suffer whatever personal demons drove him.
- Bonnie Foster
People were pretty hung up when Lennon passed. Same with when Aaliyah and Lisa Lefteye Lopez passed away. I sincerely disagree with the sentiment that the last time there was a unified mourning of a musician was Elvis.

Aaliyah dying seemed to have a pretty big impact, even though it was soon overshadowed by 9/11. I remember seeing a lot of baby girls born after 2001 named Aaliyah.

I see several people on this thread wondering why "GenX" is so impacted by MJ's passing, here is a reason why (http://www.youtube.com/watch...). He was hands down the best performer, crowd-puller, the 80s has known. When it comes to celebrities, I like to view the artist separate from the person, and as an artist, he was up there with the very best.

i was having an early dinner at a restaurant when i saw this on the local news....couldnt believe it.....truly sad and socking

I remember that reaction too and some don't seem to understand that Michael was an international superstar, who brings back incredible memories of our childhood. At 45 I literally grew up with his music and am shaken by his death.
- Karen Swim
Like Cristo I remember the day Lennon died. Walked into the student coffee shop on campus and it was like a morgue. Yet, I grew up with Michael. I remember sock hops at lunch time. My first slow dance was with a boy to the Jackson 5 song, I'll Be There. Michael's death makes me face my own mortality. Michael's death is the end of an era.

There's no doubt about Jackson's talent and if it hadn't been for his (for lack of a better word) eccentricities in the last several decades in my opinion there would be an entirely different bent to the epitaphs today. Of course there are 1000s of people who meant more to our lives. The reason we feel a sense of loss when celebrities like MJ pass is because his songs bring back certain memories from our lives. Brings back memories of my childhood. Less about MJ and more about his music and the memories.
- Curt Mercadante
Andy: Are you okay? You don't like his actions...did you ever see the man dance?
- Garin Kilpatrick
There are some people you're just glad that they are gone, not because you dislike them, but exactly because you _do_ like them. The guy was pushed into the showbiz by his dad, had no childhood, had no privacy, and the only people he cared about (i.e. children that lived crappy lives) were used against him to the demise of his career. MJ is far better away from this place we call Earth.

I was a 13 year old on the family trip driving trip that summer that started in connecticut, went through florida, across to arizona and then back across the center of the country. Doubledown_inSL: I don't want to be on any default list by a platform vendor that I didn't earn my way onto and that YOU can't earn your way onto it either. This is not a meritocracy. It's a royalty system. One that picks stars and gifts them huge audiences.

Ahmed: Twitter picked their favorite people and removed anyone that they saw as a threat to their future business model. Me for talking about friendfeed too much. Leo for complaining about the name. - courtney benson
Allen: if you said it's "San Francisco gadflys" or "insiders" then I think you're correct. It's just that Kevin is one that's very visible in that circle. Funny, Howard Lindzen and Jeff Pulver and Fred Wilson are investors in Twitter and they aren't on it. I think all three of them deserve it too. I wonder why they aren't gifted a spot?
- Robert Scoble
Robert: surely having investors on the SUL would be a little too inbred, even for twitter?
- travispuk
Travis: probably. I sure would love to see the thinking that goes on behind the scenes when they decide this list. By the way, I've heard from someone close to the Twitter team that complaining about the list gets you added to a black list where you never will get onto it. Which, funny enough, freed me to complain even more. :-)

I do like his posts. I wish Dave contributed more on Friendfeed though. I think he is a little reluctant because he doesn't want to evangelise FF at all. Robert, I think you're engaging in one of the oldest forms of media self-promotion here: attacking others as a way of drawing attention to yourself. I like you a lot and you're generally very positive. But when you start claiming that twitter "took you off the list" because you promote Friendfeed too much, I think you're playing the same kind of media game that led talk radio and its ilk astray. It doesn't speak well of you.

I wondering if there has been anything showing whether being on the SUL effects a business bottom line, if it does or starts to I definitely can see a problem.

I think, ideally, SUL's would be personalized, based on your interests, your profile(s), your friends, FOF's, etc. We'd all get a different one, that was (hopefully) more tailored to each of us. The web is about micromedia, and the one-SUL-fits-all approach is so mass media that it doesn't fit in very well... as this whole discussion (and the many others on the SUL topic) underscore.
- Fred Davis
Fred: I agree and its a great point. This is almost what Facebook and LinkedIn do to recommend connections.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I thought LinkedIn had a similar issue a few years ago with the number of connections and they capped the visible connections at 500 and evened the playing field. I like that approach. But it seems that acquiring twitter followers is baked into the twitter dna and they would never create a visible cap at 500.

Robert, I love you to death man, but why do you waste so much time and energy on this topic? I certainly don't care who is on the list, it just doesn't matter in the scheme of things. Fred: I'd love a system like that. Sort of like Alltop or WeFollow.com. That would have been the right thing to do. Jim: exactly. I like what Fred said. It really would enhance the service. Tumblr has the right approach, at least in part, on the micro-level with Tumblarity. Each user has their own benchmark. So if there was a revolt and nobody followed people on the SUL who they thought should not be on the SUL, would Twitter leave them on the SUL? - RobinDotNet
Exactly Robert, you work your butt off, and I appreciate you for what you bring to the table. I guess being a z-lister, like myself, leaves me on the outside of understanding why this is such a hot topic? Does this really boil down to money? I'm not trying to be an ass here, I truly don't get why it's so important?
- Rob Fahrni
Isn't it kind of like going to google and searching for something, and the first links that show up are the ones that people have paid google money to give them precedence, and they might not even necessarily be the best search result?
- RobinDotNet
Benjamin: you don't want to see me when I'm angry! Rob Fahrni: absolutely it's about money. And sex. And influence. And other kinds of measuring I won't mention here. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Rob Fahrni: but mostly it's about building a platform that is a meritocracy. I'm an American. I don't like royalty based systems. If you can't earn your way onto this list I don't want any part of it.
- Robert Scoble
Then Google isn't an exact model, because it IS a meritocracy, even though it's based on cash.
- RobinDotNet
Robin: I've never paid to be on Google. So far Google is a pretty darn good example of a good platform vendor that lets the marketplace decide winners and losers.
- Robert Scoble
Don't they have paid links that take precedence? I guess the diff is that though they might have that (and I don't know that they do for sure), they also show everybody else that fits the search criteria.
- RobinDotNet
Robin: absolutely not. The paid links were always separate on Google and never were mixed in with the free ones.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I meant killin me in a good way, I'm grinning ear-to-ear. I see your point but doesn't all this attention, even negative attention, just add to the popularity of the thing you despise? You're one of the good guys Robert, don't let this drag you down. I think this is great fodder for a very long essay on Scobleizer.
- Rob Fahrni
Got it. That's good to know. So the links that best meet the search criteria are on the top. Hmmm. Sounds like meritocracy to me. You're right, not like Twitter's SUL.
- RobinDotNet
derikp: if my son is better at playing soccer and isn't chosen I'd certainly go and talk to the coach and plead his case. But we're not talking about soccer and anyway I'm done discussing this. Onward. I'm glad there are so many people who like royalty based systems and don't understand why meritocracies are important to defend. I guess that's how we end up with countries like Iran and China. Sigh.
- Robert Scoble
Why should there be a list at all? Follow people that interest you. You make twitter what it is.
- Ryan Gerritsen
Bill: You can not like the SUL and still use Twitter. Apples and oranges. I don't like many of the people who live in my town, yet I still live here and like the town.
- Curt Mercadante
oh when will lame twitter SUL get corrected?! *sigh*
- Susan Beebe

And, by the way, it seems like the SUL is being used like the same "mass follower" tools that the Twitter folks are seeking to diminish by killing the accounts of those who use them.
- Curt Mercadante
Reason I still use Twitter, I still get more responses from my Tweets than in FF. Yet I tend to be more engaged in FF these days but I think the FF celebs usually spark the most engaging threads and the rest of us are trying to get that engagement from our posts.

manielse: there's no audience more engaged than one you build yourself by being of service to them. It's tough work and I'll be watching and engaging!
- Robert Scoble
Sorry I wasn't complaining, just saying many of us built that in Twitter and find it a little tougher to get traction on FriendFeed with our posts. I think tools like WeFollow, Twellow (and even #followfriday) help build relevant audiences easier. You can even argue that SUL is even a good starting place for n00bs.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
manielse: yeah, the eco system that's built up around Twitter is quite powerful. On the other hand here all you need to do is follow someone active and they bring other people into your view (every time I click "like" or comment on someone's items I push those items into your view, for instance) so finding new people to follow here is much nicer and much less of a competition. Plus you find new voices that aren't on any list a lot faster here, I've found.
- Robert Scoble
Maybe they could reward early twitter users with a day on the list for every month on twitter before 08. If new social networks would promise props in the future I could live without twitter.
- Greg Birch
Although the SUL is obviously distorting of the natural community growth of Twitter, and does not really fulfill the functions @Ev and @Biz intended, "power users" not on the SUL who criticize it should know: they sound really vain, chippy, and silly.
- Jason Pontin
I don't care who is on the Twitter SUL, and I pay no attention to it. I look for the Twitter feeds that are most interesting to me -- they are not difficult to find, with a bit of searching. I don't understand the preoccupation with that list -- like everything on the Internet, it is simple to route around or ignore entirely.
- Sean McBride
Jason: we know that. If I lived in fear of looking vain, chippy, or silly, I'd just stay off the Internet! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I do not know you or Tim but I do follow and have great respect for you both. IMHO (I am an amateur when compared to you guys), Tim was not saying that he supports the SUL. Do I agree with his comment? Nope. Do I like the SUL? No. But it does happen that if you criticise a list while you mention that you have not been included it can sound like you are "jealous" even if you are not and you do have good reasons for not liking the list... so this can be a tricky one!
- Pablo Melchor
Really, the personalized way is the only good way... I mean, sheesh, Twitter recommends people like Ashlee Simpson to me, ferchrissakes! So most of the people on the SUL are a total waste for me, and I suppose for most people, when you get right down to it... if I had some $ to burn I'd get some outside research firm like Insight Express to scope out how the SUL is actually viewed,...
- Fred Davis
I still think most people find suggested users through word-of-mouth and their own social circles. That's the only way to get the people you really want to follow based on your interests. I've also found that using hashtags properly will get the kind of users you want to follow to you before you get to them.
- Fleagle
If you don't have the 3.0 OS yet, you can get several free and paid apps that do the same thing. I wouldn't buy one tho, cause the 3.0 app is very nice and even allows you to trim the audio file on the phone.
- Donald Forth
And if your in Times Square and want to see a killer view, swing by the Six Flags office. I'll get you some free tickets you can use at the SanFran or LA parks.
- sean andersen
You should go to Winnipeg. Lunch and dinner on me. ;)
- AJ Batac
Going to Israel anytime? I want you to visit EZchip (EZCH). Also, Netlogic (NETL) in Mountain View, CA

Tumblr would be cool... FogCreek is cool too!!
- nickgs
Yes, 65amp is a flash-based mashup application that let everyone mashup their contents. The page is fully customizable, with drag-drop features, rotating, resizing stuffs and changing the styles. The first time you load will take a little while, but subsequent loads will be fast.

UpNext is in NYC. We'd be happy to meet with you! We make very fast, smooth 3d interactive maps of cities. NYC is our first city. Here is a vid of our iPhone product: http://www.vimeo.com/4418454
- vadvani@gmail.com
Robert - we (AdaptiveBlue) are in New York and would love to have you to our office to demo you the new version of Glue (you liked Jeremiah O's review of it yesterday :)
- Fraser
I second Fraser's suggestion of visiting AdaptiveBlue to see Glue. It has come a long way since we first showed it to you (back when it was called BlueOrganizer).
- Andy Roth
Hey Robert, I posted your question on the Gildertech board and George Gilder responded "My two favorite New York companies are Gerson Lehrman (the private Google of consultants rather than URLs) and Boliven, a spinoff that makes finding, creating, and comparing patents and intellectual property simple and lawyer free." - George Gilder
- Stephen Pickering
Oh, Robert, one member of the board, who is a funny guy, said humorously, "Your first question to him is, why would you leave Half Moon bay to go to NYC?........................flop" hehehehehe. I'm not sure what he meant. Just trying to be funny I guess.
- Stephen Pickering
Yes! You should meet with Triton media, they are in NY next week too. They are a one-stop shop for radio stations that offers tools to help them build their digital engagement and drive revenues. Mobile platforms, local search, etc.
- Maya Benyehuda
Are you stopping by at the http://www.web3event.com on T/W by any chance? I'm on the program. All about Semantics. Several Semantic-related companies there.
- William Mougayar
hey robert would love to give you demo of new Aviary.com stuff hit me up what day works for you. text MSG to 50500 for my info
- michael galpert
False, it can and does work better than twitter on its own
- Christian Burns
Christian, not how it works, where it gets content from.
- Dave Winer
friendfeed is a client for more than twitter... does it use rss to grab it's content for all of the 57 services?
- Chris Heath
Almost true... but the comments and like feature make it better and different.
- Benoit Cazenave
And Benoit, what would you be commenting about? Twitter and RSS. So much for Steve Gillmor's grand goodbye to the Beatles. I think he should try to talk the FF guys into the idea that RSS is dead and see how far he gets with that. And convince some FriendFeed users too while you're at it. Just give up your RSS for one week, and let's see what FF looks like. Heh. Twitter with comments.
- Dave Winer
Would it? It's a great aggregator! I don't think you need to defend RSS Dave. People make weird comments about technologies being dead all the time, mainly because they don't understand how that technology is being used.
- Rob Fahrni
When I post a video on youtube, does FF use RSS to fetch the data from youtube to FF as an example?
- David Lloyd
Mark, I don't know. Seems pretty likely to me. :-)
- Dave Winer
I think the real point is that without RSS (aka recently-updated-data-interop standard) FriendFeed wouldn't exist at all. The fact that they have a custom firehose for Twitter or "might" use a custom API call for Youtube is sort of besides the point. They are the EXCEPTION, not the RULE.
- Carter ♥ JS
How come it all happens so fast tho Dave? You know that post you made hours ago about Tech Heroes? It just made it into my google reader. I read it on Friendfeed, liked it, commented on it, and retweeted it on twitter minutes after you posted it. But still its taken hours to get on my google feed.
- David Lloyd
Without RSS, maybe people writing articles will just post links to their articles manually, and maybe have a conversation about it after submitting it in like 10 minutes, it would feel a lot less automatic and more human for me..."but that's just the rant of a teenage Egyptian kid, don't mind me ;) " "oh FF is much better than Twitter when it comes to discussions too, try having a convo. on Twitter, it will end in 5 - 10 tweets max "
- Ahmed
No, we'd still have Atom, comments, Likes, and the API
- Ken Sheppardson
...and we'd probably just have to all move to a webhook-based push system of some sort, so we wouldn't have to wait around for polling.
- Ken Sheppardson
so pretty much Friendfeed FTW even without RSS ;)
- Ahmed
I may be wrong, but Dave is making the point that RSS is important (not dead). He is not making a statement about Twitter vs. FriendFeed. I'm going to assume that for a significant percentage of the services involved, FF grabs that content via RSS. That being the case, one would have to answer True.
- Bill
I'm making the point that people who say FF is great and RSS is dead have their heads up their ass.
- Dave Winer
friendfeed is a forum, built on twitter :)
- Allen Stern
I'm starting to make Twitter an option. There's a wealth of information from other sources like Google reader, StumbleUpon, Tumblr, Facebook, etc. The stuff coming from Twitter is becoming redundant these dayss. (ie. useless)
- Rudy Amid
Uhhh you mean a wealth of information coming from RSS, right? :-)
- Dave Winer
Allen: and YouTube and wordpress and Upcoming and Flickr...
- Robert Scoble
Allen ... all of which arrive via RSS, if I remember right. There's only a few services using SUP or XMPP (which is how Twitter arrives here). Dave: when pundits say something is "dead" they almost always are wrong. Remember, Gillmor said Office was "dead" four years ago. How many billions in profit has that made since? Yeah, really dead.
- Robert Scoble
i don't want to see anything die - all the apps need to live!
- Allen Stern
most times the use of "dead" is just linkbait :)
- Allen Stern
btw robert - i know upcoming is popular out west, over here i never hear anyone mention upcoming or link to it
- Allen Stern
I've been defending RSS more lately than normal but glad that Dave agrees. I have to laugh when people say that X is dead but Y is the greatest thing. Very quickly that person makes Y their next X. Dare I say that this usually happens in Flocks as people want to stay cool. As I just said to Kevin Rose, RSS readers just need smart AI that can learn someone's SPAM/HAM to better sort and filter to the individual. I can argue that FriendFeed has the same challenges ahead.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
True, for Twitter and every other API FriendFeed supports.
- Ben Simanek
That's pretty much true. The whole RSS importing thing (and the picture upload) makes it really practical, but i couldn't imagine how much time would it take to build up a different FF personality than your Twitter-self.
- Ymag
Wrong-headed question designed to provoke debate. (I am happy to join in - debate is good.) Twitter/friendfeed, apples/oranges, false dichotomy. They do different things and if RSS didn't exist another way would be found to satisfy what is a clear need. What is really interesting in the tech world unlike the industrial world we don't know we need things until we have it. But that's another discussion.
- tom murphy
Dave: the most valuable data I get from Friendfeed is the comments about things posted. I feel like about 25% of what I read on Friendfeed is an item imported via RSS, so I say RSS is far from dead. :)
- Christian Burns
On another note, 100% of the audio I consume everyday is delivered via RSS, long live podcasting and time shifting!
- Christian Burns
I've signed up for it, my lovely wife has approved of me going. So, are all people in Atlanta small? The biggest t-shirt size they have is X-Large?
- Rob Fahrni
excellent - we'll have to hook up for dinner or something.
- Steven Vore
Hey there. Why are you scheduling all of the shows for the weekends, now? A lot of the Israeli companies had to abandon their booths for the Sabbath. Kind of sad seeing booths just sitting there, abandoned for 1/4 of the show....
- Steve Lynch
from twhirl
I will do the same, if I get put on the Twitter list.
- Robert Scoble
I think I asked the last time there was a similar conversation - so please excuse the question if it was already asked - but why would you want to be removed? Am I missing something? Since I don't really use Twitter maybe there is something I do not understand.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
LPH: I will refuse to be on this list for three reasons: 1. it's not a meritocracy. That means that my inclusion on it will raise questions about whether I did something behind the scenes to get on the list. 2. It is a gift from a company I would like to cover journalistically in the future. If I got the "gift" of being on the list I could no longer do that and keep my own integrity. 3. Being on the list gets you huge amounts of unenaged followers. I really am not in this game just for numbers.
- Robert Scoble
LPH: Go to TechCrunch's followers. Look at the engagement level. Most of his followers don't even put a picture on their avatars. Now go to mine and compare. The engagement level is HUGELY different. I'm paid to get an engaged audience, not an audience of bots or an audience of people who don't participate in the Internet.
- Robert Scoble
LPH: TechCrunch's followers: http://twitter.com/TechCru... My followers: http://twitter.com/Scoblei... -- what differences do you notice? Look for signs of engagement. What are those? 1. Have the members put a photo on the avatar? 2. Have the members actually done a tweet or two? 3. Have the members actually followed anyone on their own (organic following?)
- Robert Scoble
Robert - now that makes sense. I just don't use Twitter enough and am used to FF engagement. Guess I'm spoiled !
- LPH™ and his dog P™
LPH: now do you see the problem Twitter is facing here? http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsen... -- lots of hype, not enough engagement. It's engagement that advertisers will pay for, not the hype.
- Robert Scoble
Hint: this list is actually making things worse for Twitter's returns and engagement. Here's why: 1. If you get onto Twitter because of a celebrity, that's great, but I've found people get very fickle about celebrities. Go to @oprah, for instance. Is there anything really that interesting there to read day after day after day? I don't see it. But what if your best friend is on Twitter? Yes, I find following my close friends on Twitter day after day IS interesting and DOES get me back to the service.
- Robert Scoble
2. Twitter seems to only endorse "celebrities" on its recommended follower list. Well, that tells normal users that they don't matter to the system as much as celebrities. So they feel less engaged/empowered. Compare this to Facebook where celebrities only can have 5,000 friends. Now everyone is on the same level and the system "feels" more intimate and engaging because of that.
- Robert Scoble
Great point Robert, and that's another reason why sites like Facebook (and in the past MySpace, Friendster, etc) are 'sticky' ... people you actually know are there. Most people will be more engaged with people they actually know - i for one don't engage with celebs on twitter because i know they're not going to engage with me
- Chris Heath
bet that if twitter had a "best-of-the-day" feed like, no celebrity will on it. twitter is becoming less conversational. pity :(
- Shivanand Velmurugan
Chris: right! Plus, this list really penalizes the real users of the service (this is why Allen Stern's points about friendfeed's list being bad are starting to win me over). Those who put the most time into the service should be rewarded by that service. I've been on Twitter 890 days. The fact that someone else is on the recommended list that's only been on for 15 days really pisses me off and makes me more likely to go elsewhere.
- Robert Scoble
Shivanand: right, and it would be a lot better for engagement to have something like http://alltop.com/ which recommends people based on your content interests. If I want to hook into people who are into quilting, why would such a system recommend Mike Arrington to me?
- Robert Scoble
i'm texting scoble from my iphone and it's mangling every goddam word
- Dave Winer
The other thing about 'recommended' is For What? I might like Robert, but not if I'm looking for hollywood dish. same w/ jay, obviously.
- reed price
Dave: the iPhone keyboard does that. (I'm on the phone with him now).
- Robert Scoble
I've never found the suggested users list to be useful, on Twitter or FriendFeed. Frankly, I don't care if you're "just some guy/girl" or if you're God...if you don't say anything that interests me or teaches me something new, I'm not going to look for what you have to say. If you put all the numbers aside and make connections on a one-to-one basis, even though it's accessible one-to-many, that's worth finding.
- Sally - Skyrimmin' It
The celebrity suggested user lists completely miss the point of Twitter, implying it's a broadcast system - which is a minority use case. Services like Mr Tweet are far more apposite. Even random selections might get you started better!
- Tom de Grunwald
A friend of mine joined Twitter and had list of "friends" and she didn't know who they were. It's like moving to a new address and getting a bunch of junk the first time you open the mail box.
- Tom Newman
Tom, they're not really "friends", you're following a person, they may be friends, they may not. I know, picky, picky, picky.
- Rob Fahrni
Reed, i totally agree... suggested lists are a nice thing to have, but only when you know why the suggestion is being made.
- Chris Heath
Maybe a better model for a suggested list would be to look at more than number of subscriptions/follows - look at how many posts/comments - on FF they could also look at how many services or what services - if i post a lot from a service then the suggested list should maybe show me more people from that service ... one thing i will agree is that a suggested list is a hard thing to do because you can't please everyone with your suggestions ... just look where we are now...
- Chris Heath
Even though I respect your reasons, I still can't believe you did it. It's such a huge opportunity. Yes but I do see what Scoble is saying. it would be impossible to criticize them.
- Stephen Pickering
Oh my bad, It was Jay Rosen. I thought it was Dave Winer. Oh well, same difference. I can totally understand him. He's a journalist. What would be interesting to see though is if he remained on the list but remained totally objective and criticized them when it was appropriate and see if they then took him off.
- Stephen Pickering
NICE: @anonymoustom: "celebrity suggested user lists miss the point of Twitter, implies broadcast system, a minority use case"
- .LAG liked that
Dave, why do you think they put you on the list?
- Thomas Hawk
Thomas: Dave wasn't put on the list, Jay Rosen was. I bet he was put on the list because he's one of the best Twitterers around and because he doesn't do anything "negative" in their eyes, like talk about friendfeed or overload users with too many tweets.
- Robert Scoble
Don't forget the fact that there will be no way your followers can all DM you if you're on that list.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse: that's a good point and since I care more about having engaged followers than just a broadcast mechanism, that matters to me too.
- Robert Scoble
When a 'cat who tweets' makes the list, while many worthwhile charitable/educational organizations are ignored, something doesn't smell right. And it isn't just @sockington's litter box.
- Sharon McPherson
How many more requests did you get while 'recommended' versus say a normal day?
- Andrew Leyden
Probably not the same league as Twitter, but Tweetree.com shows you (Dave) and Scobleizer on their front page sometimes.
- Hiro Asari
Jay's decision clearly struck a nerve: Look at all these comments! ... Re: Robert Scoble saying he'd refuse to be listed because (a) it would raise questions about quid pro quo (b) gift would compromise his journalism, and (c) unengaged followers -- I get a & b, and applaud him for it. But I'm not sure I grasp the downside of having 100,000 "unengaged" followers. How do you know how...

My power management issues are cleaned up on my laptop and it is a much slicker experience than 8.10... Installing on a new desktop tonight, hoping for better experience than with the beta [video drivers].
- Ben Hedrington
Your mileage may vary. I'd like to see a non-techie use Ubuntu for a month, it is a very nice Linux distro, I use it, I like it, but it's not for mom and pop. It's still light years out for the casual user. Test #1 for the non-techie user.. Install it on your laptop, and connect to your wireless network. Try that with a MacBook, or Windows laptop. It's the little things that matter.
- Rob Fahrni
Its as slick as either until mom and pop try to install a program like you would windows then at's all over red rover, but I love it!
- Andy
i like simpler/lighter distros, but linux and bsd certainly have come of age on the desktop
- Iphigenie
I think it could become a serious contender but the Linux folks don't really seem to care about that. They're interested in the server, which isn't a bad thing. Apple has proven you can make a serious OS friendly to the average user, and you can get to the horse power under the hood.
- Rob Fahrni
