"You could start that service without Fred...use the money from the winning bids to pay an NYU student to hang out at the coffee shop in Union Square each morning and deliver the messages from the winning bids to Fred directly in person once a day ;-)"

"But even if it's 1 in 1,000 emails that he does have time to pay attention to, the odds of it turning into something good for all involved are still better than zero... As long as the disclosure is open and up front (which is what these type of posts are doing), we all know the rules we are playing the game by...and with that knowledge we can choose to play or not..."

"I believe Fred just uses Kik, Twitter, and a few other communication tools for his 'insider' networks...prob. easier than trying to manage multiple accounts that you've either got to log in/out of constantly or merge and figure out a proper sort for..."

"I'm on a super tiny scale compared to Fred, but I actually do live by a version of this...the only thing is I've turned off all my other communication options...so I'm always telling people, if you want to reach me, email me. I keep everything I 'have to deal with' in my inbox...I even email myself tasks and important things all the time. This way, if it's not in my inbox, I don't feel bad about not dealing with it...and I have a complete list of all the open things I need to deal with (it doesn't move out of my inbox until I've dealt with it; and I keep my inbox as clean as possible). What I find is that this process works great for me...it becomes one central communication point that anyone can participate in (it's very easy to find my email address online)...it lets me deal with stuff on my own schedule (instead of everyone elses)...and it's a system I can generally access from anywhere at any time... For your #1 question...I do get push back from people all the time about me not..."

"This is exactly the opposite of my thinking...I treat the phone much like Fred treats email...that is to say, I think it's perfectly fine for anyone to try and call me whenever they want, about anything they want...but just because you call, doesn't mean I'm going to stop doing what I'm doing and take that call...and just because you leave a voicemail doesn't mean I'm going to call you back (especially if you don't give me enough of a reason in your voicemail). I get that there are manners around communication, but people should also remember that when you are reaching out to someone YOU are the one being distractive...I think the receiver is well within their rights to ignore your attempt as they see fit... And by the way, ignoring a communication doesn't mean you want to ignore it...there are lots of legit reasons for needing to ignore a communication request...I think sheer volume is just one of them..."

"Of course Fred already knows this, but that class is just one of the awesome things that Gary and Christina do on the 'street' level for those of us trying to start stuff in NYC...in addition to always being around and responsive to our questions, they also often put together small, focused events for potentially complimentary startups to meet and really dig into what each is doing and how everyone can help. They probably get a few good leads out of the deal here and there, but having gone to at least one of the events, I can honestly say I don't think that's why they do it (or even what they are thinking about when putting it together)...I think they love to learn and they love to help...and so they go do whatever they can, and use whatever resources they can, to do just that."

"I'm hoping Code Academy helps do that for me...you all are still sticking with it right? A few more months and I'll be able to pass around some of these ideas and work. ;-)"

"That's basically how the college football system works...there's a bowl for just about every team to play in. I think the NFL works because of the tournament...it's one of those cases where extremely limited supply helps explode demand and interest."

"Back in '99 I owned a domain called ourfight.com that was supposed to be around that idea...but I never ended up building it (I actually have many more ideas I never build than the ones I do)...I also used to own the domain bar.ackoba.ma during the last election but never did anything with it either...I think basically comes down to the fact that as much as I try, I can't get that interested in politics (to me it seems to always be about the lesser of evils than it is about the 'best' for the people -- and that sucks). In a related thought though...I've been thinking about building super simple mobile app that lets you take two pictures and then send it out as a choice to your friends (a this or that kind of app)...for those situations where you have two choices and really want some friends help in picking between the two (in my vision of the app it would be somewhat like groupme, but specifically for picking between a pre set of options)...guess it's not really all that related to..."

"Heh - sorry about that! I've got OCD for building things...if an idea strikes me, I like to throw a prototype together to flesh it out a bit and see how well it sticks and how interested I remain in the project after releasing a MVP (the best way to get an idea out of my head is to explore it until my questions are answered, and then I can make room for new ideas and questions). So it might seem like I have a lot of projects, but really I've only got 4 or 5 active personal projects at the moment (turfd.com, pu.ly, knowabout.it, and whoclicked.it)...and I have been actively killing the projects that no longer interested me or weren't really going anywhere (conversationlist.com and the old version of pu.ly being two recently killed ones)...of course I've got about 50 other ideas I want to play with when I find time (and of course new ideas hit all the time). Building stuff is what I love to do ;-)"

"They beat the Falcons (and cost me a couple of lunches in doing so -- btw, ping me Dave Pinsen to collect!)...so I'm rooting for the Giants. Overall I think it should be a good game, and probably pretty close, so my prediction is 27-24 Giants. ...and what would a @falicon comment be without a little related, and shameless self-promotion thrown in? Since we are talking sports, I figure it's the perfect opp. to bring up a pet project I've been throwing together -> http://turfd.com (basically it's meant to be "Techmeme for sports")...super early in the project, but as a major sports geek, I think it's already pretty cool. :)"

"Congrats to the whole engag.io team...exciting news and happy to see it continue to evolve. I haven't adopted it yet myself, primarily because the first step requires action by me...I generally don't have a problem staying up with the conversations I've initiated (honestly I don't generate that much conversational content online)...but I do have a bigger problem in finding the quality conversations that I *should* or *want* to be engaging with. I have always had big hopes for Disqus filling that role, but they haven't seemed ready/able to move beyond their initial core/product yet (only so many things they can go after at once). So when engag.io moves into that realm, and start to point out conversations and people around the web that I need to be getting into...then I'll be converted big time (p.s. I don't think what you offer now is that far off from being able to realize this dream -- especially if you are starting to get conversation data at scale, which I'm sure mentions by Fred..."

"If you have a powerful, personalized, filter that you can apply to Twitter there is a TON of value in getting daily email, because it's impossible for a human to catch, read, and understand everything that passes through Twitter...this is a problem of available time to consume, volume, and quality. Computers can help deal with the volume, intelligent algorithms (and a few special tricks) mixed in with a human element (very important) can help deal with the quality...and a daily email can help deal with the time to consume issue....to back up my basic argument, I can say that our knowabout.it daily emails (which are basically doing just what I outline above) see an average open rate of 20%-30% a day...and of those, 30%-40% generate at least one click (and yes, often they click more than one item)...so lots of people are already getting a TON of value out of having Twitter show up in their inbox every day. :-)"

"Twitter has been wanting to do more with email for awhile now, starting with the release of email notifications last summer they are finally making some progress...but I think they realize that the current staff skill set was more on scaling than it was on how to properly do an email product...the Summify acquisition helps bring in email product experts who are also already VERY familiar with Twitter data and have at least a little clue about scaling. The probably haven't explained it much yet, because honestly I think they aren't entirely sure what email product they are actually going to build yet...they saw an opportunity to bring in a bright young, expert team to fill a hole they know they want to fill...so they moved on it. Once they have some time to figure out their roadmap, I suspect we'll start to hear news of their plans...but it's probably at least 6 months away from now."

"Same feelings here...didn't we ditch the glasses in the 80s after jaws? No, we just switched from cardboard to plastic I guess.... And from a kid view, my 8yr old likes the 3d now, but my 5yr old has trouble with it (glasses never fit him and are an uncomfortable exp even if they do)... Given the choice, I go Imax (reg), then reg, then imax 3d, then 3d..."

It's not very refined yet, but I'm already totally addicted to http://turfd.com - catching tons more sports news than I norm. would!
"Love techmeme as well...actually just built http://turfd.com for my own personal sports wants/needs and modeled it very much after techmeme (the core idea is techmeme for sports -- right now it's just a few sources but I'll plug in more over time; and right now it's all just automated but I'll add in more techmeme-like features over time too)."

"Sorry about that...it was around since fall of 2009...was fun while it lasted, but always just a little side project I played with. Some day I might bring back a new and improved version ;-)"
