I left Twitter for Jaiku. Then Jaiku left me for Google. I moved in with Pownce but it died. I went back to Twitter, but flirted with Plurk, Identica, and Rejaw, and even tried doing it myself with Laconica but it was Twitter I really loved. Twitter finally broke my heart so I left it for Friendfeed. Now Friendfeed is leaving me for Facebook. No...
It reads better than Soap - my roadmap is very similar but I'll forgive FF and live happily ever after with it (for the time being, anyway)
- Nicholas Paul Gordon
from iPhone
You're the best Leo. Canadians are the funniest people.
- Dan Lessard
I'm betting they'll slowly digest it into the Facebook news feed. They claim that Friendfeed is staying put for now, but that won't last.
- Ken Bauer
And we keep following Leo all over the place!
- Robert Scoble
When will we all get in a long term relationship and stop getting our hearts broken?
- Nate Pilling
so what is more important, the medium or the people, hope that FF will let us export our content, and our social netork :) (in my wild dreams)
- abdellah
Need ice cream? I'm new to FF, and kind of sad I didn't jump on the proverbial wagon sooner!
- Elizabeth K. Barone
I hope you leave your standard breadcrumbs so we can find you in the next chapter of social interaction.
- jcunwired
Feels to me like maybe it's time to go back to building a distributed network, rather than hopping from service to service.
- Ken Sheppardson
But where to next? That's the question. Wave sounds great, but the implementation will be a PAIN. So where? Oh LeoMoses...where is our path in the desert?
- ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
Sounds like a hurtin' country song in the making.
- Bill Rodman
Well you can't say that what is happening in the 'social sphere' is boring by any means!
- Matt Cassem
I think Leo's audience is more likely to click "Like" or "comment" than Scoble's is. When Leo and Rob are both posting on FF, Leo gets more likes and comments
- Mark
Didn't you leave a post earlier saying how funny it was that people complain anytime there's a change (referring to the FF buyout)? This sounds like a complaint to me.
- Fleagle
Not complaining - just thinking about the future. I think a little Friendfeed DNA will vastly improve Facebook. And I think Facebook is already the big winner with the general populace. I also think we geeks need a corner somewhere else to hang out in.
- Leo Laporte
And I have no plans to leave Friendfeed. Yet.
- Leo Laporte
I feel more of a personal connection with the FriendFeed team than I have with other services I've left, and that will be a big part of why I will stay as long as possible.
- Louis Gray
^^^ replace "team" with "community" and there's my reason for sticking it out.
- jcunwired
Its also going to take a very long time to go through content and bookmark/store it elsewhere. Evernote is going to be used heavily in the weeks to come.
- jcunwired
The only way to have control is to use your own URL
- Craig Shipp
Wait till you meet Facebook's randy cousin Overly Friendly Book =)
- Cynthia Yildirim
what Louis gray said. I'm going to hang around until the lights go out.
- Jordan Brock
from BuddyFeed
What they said, I don't see any reason to leave FriendFeed unless something actually changes that makes the service worthless to me.
- Craig B.
And many times you cheated Twitter, she was always loyal to you. Thats mean someting!

from f2p
yup me too Louis and I don't know any of them
- Thomas Power
Users today are investors too - only the 'exit' for us is not lucrative.... its the other way sometimes :)
- Mrinal Desai
I just had the idea: wow, how good will Faceboook become though this input? (JUST imagine tagging ppl in FB the way U can Tag them in FF.)
- oliver gassner
I agree with Jonathan Hardesty "It's like the internet version of Days of Our Lives" - And sites keep getting killed off only to come back to life a month later!
- Amy Flynn
very true, however on the other hand, we are getting closer to that one service which everyone will be on... and I dont think twitter is going to be that one
- Bryce Campbell
Facebook buying FriendFeed is like having to MOVE just when you got your house all dressed up and made into a comfy HOME! I don't feel like doing it again!
- Arleen Anderson
Now that Facebook and Friendfeed have married, I'm waiting for Twitfacefeedplebospacening.
- Anthony Marco
Leo, u by your self made two companies (services) out of 3 famous and made Google interested enough to buy 2 of them (Jaiku & FF). Google also tried to flirt with Twitter as well. So which one u choose now? Cause we will follow u :P
- Sam Ehsan
Sounds like some of my past love affairs. Of course, I'm married now. That, um, was prior.

Speaking of Days Of Our Lives: Didn't that show jump the shark when the serial killer was unmasked as Marlena (a character I used to have a mad crush on, and who's now mostly a professional victim)? Then all the "killed" characters came back to life, since they were only what I call "soap opera dead"...
- Dennis Jernberg
And if everyone follows you, then your all having affairs all over the place! LOL
- Sandra Large
I think it's back to the TWiT Army!
- Paul Salzman
It's not like we have proposed Healthcare reform, or anything really important, going on in the U.S.A.
- Steve de Mena
yep. welcome to another episode of; As the Stomach Turns. one big soap opera.
- Scratch5150
I've decided I'm not going to tell ANYONE which site I'm favoring... not even myself! I swear! As soon as I decided that FF was my new place (a couple months ago) THIS happens! It's like magic, but in a bad bad way...
- Mark "DerBingle" J
Why do we all assume this is a bad thing? Maybe the FF Facebook combo will be better??
- Craig Shipp
Maybe they'll keep both open -- FF is the open side, and FB is the closed side.
- John Flinchbaugh

I know exactly how you feel. What's a person to do? I am mad at Twitter for suspending some of my accounts. First, the accounts kept causing the password to reset, then they were suspended, all around the time of the DOS attacks. All I ever used Twitter for was to advertise my businesses, and for fun. Now I don't know where to go.

- Aviva Gabriel
Gotta find one who is a lady in public and a whore in the bedroom. One who looks like a woman, but thinks like a man. One who tells you you're the only person in their world and worships the ground you walk on. One who's from Venus but want's to live on Mars. One who you know will always be there even when the chips are down. One who looks like a movie star, but doesn't bust the credit...

I think a lot of people LOVE to think negatively and don't want to think positively. They think FB is BAD and will ruin FF, but I think if they do it well, FB won't be the bad guy. I think most people who are irked about this are irked because they think the FFers "sold out" to the "man".
- Molly, "sorry"
@Mollyanna - I disagree. I am irked because the future of FF is completely uncertain. It's more likely that FB will let FF flounder and close it down than it is that FB will invest time and resources in maintaining and enhancing FF. FB has other interests and is splitting up the FF dev team. That does not bode well for FF. I don't begrudge the FF devs for taking the money. I would be...

Good news? People like Paul don't usually get in the office so early especially after a lack of sleep, on a Monday morning, if there wasn't a great reason.

Aww Man, see now I am not going to get any sleep tonight! DAMN YOU PAUL and your teasing little smiley face. OK, must go and get some coffee!

Guessing this was about the Facebook announcement?
- Ben Hedrington
Paul, will you respond to this? This is *bad* for FF users. Best case: it continues on, but distracted by Facebook and with stagnated feature development. Worst case: it's gone. Middle of the road: Facebook forces its ads into the timeline and friendfeed starts acting like Facebook by ignoring its users.
- tollie williams
@tollie, I imagine Paul's ability to respond is now constrained, which is just one of the changes we'll see coming. There's new management in town, folks.
- Ken Kennedy
Congratulations Paul - I am very proud of you... no wonder you couldn't sleep! :) Now we know why! As you know, I am a huge fan of your FriendFeed product. I am very happy for you guys and hope you keep your fabulous culture of innovation going strong. This is really amazing.... nice exit! :)

I have been wishing facebook could get more like Friendfeed :) awesome.

Friendfeed is no longer .. all that's left is the flick of the switch.
- John Blanton
It's nice for the FF peeps. They'll see what it's like to deliver new features for a decent size user base.
- mrshl
Mike: I wouldn't worry about FriendFeed. I see it as Facebook's R&D department now. We're the test bunnies for what 300 million people will get! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Now Friendfeed will be able to go head to head with Google wave! So long as the team are allowed to lead from within Facebook how can this possibly be bad?
- Ade Lack
Nice comments. Also looking forward to realtime search and 300M+ users ... watch that in realtime! My screen will melt I guess.
- Peter van Teeseling
I'm only really sad because it completely breaks my on-line life. I'm excited for the FF team and for FB but that's only one aspect and I don't see how it can be merged.
- James Myatt
Mark: can you verify that this is a real account somehow? Tell us something about what we did in Davos together that I didn't share.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, the user name for Zuck misspells his name, just like he misspelled yours.
- Louis Gray
Mark, if that is really you. Please don't let people on FB find users on FF. Some of us are looking for the anti-social web. Private groups and no friend requests from long lost classmates was a big plus over here.
- Chip Ramsey
Robert: from what I can tell most FF users do not share your enthusiasm or optimism. From what I can see FriendFeed team members will be absorbed into Facebook R&D, FriendFeed as a property will whither and most will cash out as soon as they can. Do you have some other information that you can share that supports your optimism?
- Brian Sullivan
Robert: Do you have *any* reason at all to believe that friendfeed will survive as a distinct entity?
- Christopher A Carr
How does everyone know what's going to happen? I prefer Rob's tone of "what should happen" - fear vs possibility

Really interesting perspective you provide here. I was thinking this whole time that this would hit Twitter hard, but I see now that Google might be the real target, because of the whole real-time search. Nonetheless, I love all the Google employees that are hoping facebook becomes more "open" in the process. Something tells me facebook doesn't care about being open, but being a...

Wait I owe Scoble an apology. I read several places that he had a financial interest in Friend Feed. That information , if true, clouded my perception of his commentary of FF. If you believed that true, he comes across as a shill trying to protect his investment IMHO. In his blog post he denounces any financial connection. Now I feel stupid because good practices dictate that he would have disclosed such in his writings. I suck sorry Robert.
- cheapsuits
from iPhone
Hmmm - I keep my FB social, private, and mainly family. I keep FF public and work-oriented only. Will I need two accounts? Or just delicate messing about with privacy controls? I'm not looking forward to shifting - may FF last a long while still. FB is too busy, and FF is lightweight and gives me exactly what I want, with a much cleaner interface. Thanks very much Robert, your blog post is much appreciated!
- Allyson Lister
cheapsuits: Robert has said 1,000 + times that he has no financial interest in ff.
- Christopher A Carr
Robert, how can you say you don't get how FF users are sad and up in arms? FB's attitudes and culture are different enough for this to be a serious shock. In short, lots of people think FF=good, FB=bad, for better or worse. Your own list of cons is enough to get FF users up in arms.
- Don Faulkner
Christopher I see it now. Easy to see what he said when it isn't filtered by FF haters. What more can I say then I suck? I surely am not going to kill myself over it.
- cheapsuits

Thrilled for Paul, but amused that FB's first big land grab is another biz that isn't monetized properly either! Arrogance or Ignorance?
- Jan Simmonds
Jan, FF has some great technology and some great people. It's not about the service itself.
- James Myatt
Here's why people are up in arms: I think it's in the company's best interests to keep the properties existing separately ... especially since like you said, it's a geekier community on FF. Why not integrate the cool *features* FF has within Facebook but keep friendfeed.com as-is?
- Tamar Weinberg
I agree this is more of a play against Google. I think eventually Twitter and Facebook will team up more to provide real time streams of user updates between the two systems. I wonder if the first step is using FF for the collection of these streams and the next step is acquiring the method of pushing these streams or content.
- CodeSamurai
I like the separate sites and maybe they will allow both options, Facebook is too busy for me and Friend Feed cuts to the chase and I hope we don't see "FaceFeed" with everything combined without options.
- MedicalQuack
They got some talented people at FriendFeed.
- Kenneth Yeh
Thrilled for Paul, but amused that FB's first big land grab is another biz that isn't properly monetized either! Arrogance, Ignorance or Clairvoyance?
- Jan Simmonds
Yeah. I'm mostly kidding. Plenty of feed aggregators monetize their sites. It's more the placement that makes it feel like it's 'part of my site'.
- Kevin Fox
Personally I think this is a step way too far! It's one thing putting cras ads next to your social pages which are made up of all your content, but to hijack your brand like this is pretty patronising. If it were me I'd be screaming nails...
- Jan Simmonds
I really feel for the Yahoo! designers. They do fantastic work, but were (and it seems, are) frequently put in the position of 'make this page better, and also incorporate a monster ad above the fold' (yes, 'monster ad' is one of the recognized sizes). If you take out the tacked-on, seemingly non-targeted ads, the new redesign is pretty fresh and clean.
- Kevin Fox
Kevin, I agree, I like this design, purple and all. I wonder how the upper-left image ("No preview available") gets filled in.
- Stephen Mack
I'd just added the site to my Yahoo home page moments before. I assume it's in a queue right now to have the page downloaded and a thumbnail generated.

Maybe @fredwilson would have a good suggestion?

Yes, 65amp is a flash-based mashup application that let everyone mashup their contents. The page is fully customizable, with drag-drop features, rotating, resizing stuffs and changing the styles. The first time you load will take a little while, but subsequent loads will be fast.

Hey Robert, I posted your question on the Gildertech board and George Gilder responded "My two favorite New York companies are Gerson Lehrman (the private Google of consultants rather than URLs) and Boliven, a spinoff that makes finding, creating, and comparing patents and intellectual property simple and lawyer free." - George Gilder
- Stephen Pickering
Oh, Robert, one member of the board, who is a funny guy, said humorously, "Your first question to him is, why would you leave Half Moon bay to go to NYC?........................flop" hehehehehe. I'm not sure what he meant. Just trying to be funny I guess.

Ike Turner was a damn fine guitar player. Talent in one arena doesn't give you a pass on being a dick.

Dvorak. Always have him on please. You and him ARE TWiT. Wil Harris is also very enjoyable. So is Calacanis. Cory Doctorow also.

Dvorak, Curry, Calacanis, Patrick Norton, and yes cigars and wine

Has Curry ever been on TWiT? I'd love to see Worley on, Dvorak possibly, but if you get those two, maybe add some other old TechTV'ers if possible. Calacan would probably be good too.

Molly, Dvorak, WilW, Jason Howell is under exposed, Tom Green, Harry Shearer, Veronica, mix it up Alex A sans Kevin, Merlin, yes please Merlin. And a bit less wine...

Pete Cashmore was cranky and great although probably not popular. Ryan Block and Will Harris are always good. Worley and Molly are very good. Curry would be fun since he is opinionated. Basically choose folks who are very knowledgeable or Type A. No squeeky women who start each sentence with "um" or "well".

Winer, Gilmore, Calacanis and Doctorow - that should be fun.
- Geoff Schaadt
Wil Harris, Andy Walker and some of the old gang from The Lab. Someone to talk the effects of technology in the entertainment field such as theatre and concerts
- Stephen Dean
Looking over the list, 95% of them are already on, or have been on the TWiT network. Lets get a little more imaginative. Like Josh Topolsky though.
- Bill Heslin
Steve Gillmor, Merlin Mann and Jason Calacanis.

Kevin Rose, I know you don't like having him on, but he is nice to see every once and a while. Veronica Belmont would be nice again, Patrick, Maybe John.

Sam Ramji, Open Source Director at MS. Talk about cognitive dissonance! Very smart guy and excellent speaker. I can introduce you if you want.
- John Kordyback
Josh Topoksky, Geoff Farinha (up and coming podcaster)
- Shawn Roberts
I really enjoyed Twit 188 with Becky Worley and Devorak. Calacanis is good too. Not a fan of P Norton

Wil Wheaton and Levar Burton would be awesome.
- Jason Elliott
John C, Rose, Norton, and Worley. Second list is John C, Harris, Swood, and Curry.

Daniel Suarez, author of Daemon… just finished it… awesome.

Molly and Lisa--Star Trek geeks; Brian; and Patrick but, as has been stated, only if he's in the house otherwise he leaves early/gets disconnected/gets called away. No more than four

- Stephan Romeo
Jason Calocanis - Star Trek Guys are a good Idea too
- Shane Burgess
How has no one said Molly Wood? She hasn't been on in a while. She definitely has a great amount of geek cred.
- Chris Kourmoulakis
Chris, Molly has been all over this biz!
- Mike Nayyar
Patrick Norton, Jason Calicanius, Or perhaps Bwana? Levar Burton is always awesome too.
- Crystal Tillman
For selfish purpose, I'd love to come on and talk about how we're using social networking to help America's homeless. But aside from that (and pardon the plug), I like Baron's choice, Trent Reznor would make for an interesting guest given the present circumstances with Apple. I also would love to see Molly Wood.
- Brandon Mendelson
John C. Dvorak of COURSE, Becky Worley (who seems very insightful and is able to hold her own with John) and lots of wine. Do not under any circumstances allow Calacanis on to do any more impressions, god that's annoying.
- Barry Ferg
Love to hear Pogue if you can get him. If not, bring back Brushwood!

Calacanis is always interesting and how about Levar Burton and Sarah Lane Wil Harris too

FriendFeed crew, MG Siegler, Mark Spencer, Scoble, Joshua Schachter, Kevin Rose, Veronica Belmont, Lisa Bettany, Bwana, Jeff Pulver, Dvorak, Brian Brushwood, Gary Vaynerchuk !

I totally think I should be on - I could explain my new theory that explains how dinosaurs aren't actually extinct, but instead exist in a parallel dimension where, among other things, purple is a flavor.
- Chrimmus Tad
Devorak, Shwood, Patrick Norton & Cali Lewis
- Anthony
Shwood, Wil Harris, Robert Heron, and Patrick Norton!
- Brandon Kester
Just get Dvorak and Jason Calacanis together again. Both are insightful, headstrong and controversial.
- Dave Senior
dvorak, calacanis, veronica belmont
- Brian Waters
Interesting to hear what a tech-savvy VC has to say about the state of innovation in tech - what is likely to get funding - who's under presure - where money helps innovate - where VC money offers no advantage etc etc
- Ian Horley
Calacanis, Veronica, Levar and Dvorak of course
- John Gardiner
Still on the VC theme, Guy Kawazaki is a great orator, but not sure how good a pundit he is, or how tech savvy he is http://www.guykawasaki.com/ - I think he s in your neck of teh woods too!

Anyone that will talk about tech and not swine flu. Dvorak, Patrick, Roger, Veronica.
- keith
I would like to hear Bwana again. Also Levar Burton is always good.
- Dylan Newstead
Kate Russell from click in the uk to add new edgy tech? dvorak of course, and any trekkies for the new movie, steve gibson to make seriously nerdy, how about roz on her new row
- Rob Williams
Bring John C. Dvorak and Jason together please! They are both great to hear in the same episode.
- Pigon (Piotr Golebiowski)
Adam Curry, not that bad of a guy Leo... Less Ryan Block, More Calacanis, More Wil Harris
- Jim Edwards
How about a Blast From the Past! A show on the old Computer Chronicles and maybe get Stewart Cheifet as a guest. I know it's history, and not really a new tech idea, but if not on TWiT maybe on another show. Maybe TDoT - These Decades of Tech, history of where it all started, with guests like Steve Jobs, Woz, Gates (he's retired now also) Capt. Crunch etc.. There is a lot of history there! just an idea.
- HamRadioActive
Discuss Apple's rumored acquisition of EA. Good idea/not, why/why not? With Kevin Rose (Apple Fanboy), Dvorak (Not so much of an Apple Fanboy) and Alex Albrecht (gamer, TRS etc).
- Michel
Louis Gray. He should start a podcast of his own. Perhaps, you could encourage him to start one.

Leo - I would be honored and willing to discuss ANY topic you might toss in my direction. Ukiah, Sebastapol, ... all lie near and dear to my heart. any interest in interviewing a 10 year veteran of the enterprise software biz? name the time/place and i'm there. i appreciate everything you do @leo
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Kevin Rose, Sarah Lane, Calacanis, Patrick Norton, Martin Sargent and no Dvorak.
- Michael Sarge
Hey Leo, looked at Square Space thinking about changing but have a question about my domain, i think you said it's not problem to go straight to your www but do they now take over the hosting for the domain and or email, i still would like to use my own domain and my own email extention, and i just signed up with 1and1 to have imap support, does square space have imap support, not sure how that would all work.

How about how the white house could have saved 300k and a job. To do the Air Force One Photo - hire someone to photoshop a pricture of AF1 over the SoL - why did we actually need to take the picture?
- Laurence Gold
Molly. Tom Merritt, Dvorak, Veronica, ... how to choose? Good luck making sense of all the suggestions! Oh, and Jono Bacon! ;)
- Bert Van Vreckem
Dvorak/Norton are the best. Molly Wood/Meritt/Veronica are always great, as is Shwood. Wild card Morgan Webb would be neat, but people have been asking for her for almost too long.

Me. Of course. Bon week-end à tous ; )

I'd really like to see you take it to the next level and turn it into the tech equivalent of the Sunday news shows, ala This Week, Meet the Press, etc. That is, try to get more of the folks who've actually made news in tech this week on the show, combined with analysis of why what's happened this week matters. Just getting a bunch of hosts from TWiT shows and other media outlets talking about who knows whom and promoting their stuff is less appealing to me.
- Ken Sheppardson
Levar Burton - May I also add perhaps an iPhone/BB/C-phone app review/recommendation section of the show - I value the panels input on such things
- Tyler Johnston
Jerry Pournelle, Levar B or Peter Rojas. Spare us the bubble gum ones like iJustine or Lisa Bettany. Shopping exclusively at an Apple Store and being cute != tech expert/panelist.

Always love to hear perspectives from Dvorak, Norton, Calacanis, Belmont, Wheaton & Burton, lets add Adam Curry, Economist Paul Krugman and actor Jeff Goldblum to the mix

Molly Wood & Steve Gibson. It would be rant-astic!

wow... thanks for the love everyone! my favorite guests to be on with are Dvorak and Kevin Rose. I feel like those shows really rock.
- Jason Calacanis
Scoble, Calcanis, Gillmor, Winer and Arrington mud wrestling in pink blancmange! - Make us laugh and then they'll all be friends again!
- Jan Simmonds
Dvoracanis part 2! And Miley Cyrus. Or maybe Paul Thurrott & Andy Ihnatko, plus Kevin Rose.

Or Adam Curry, Alex Jones & Michael Savage. Oh, wait, that would be a special episode of No Agenda. Sorry, my bad.
- Thunderwing

Lisa Bettany, Jason Calacanis and Dvorak. Always. It'd be nice to see Paul Thurrott on TWiT, he's always great and it was a big MS week what with the RC.

I'm demoing friendfeed to a bunch of people at Kinnernet. All sorts of tech industry leaders. Say hi. Oh, Jimmy Wales says he'll join friendfeed here. Watch the video we recorded here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel... interesting conversation.
Well, for one thing it is a lot easier to engage in a conversation on FriendFeed and I especially like the idea that you can create a conversation based on any entry or content type posted to FriendFeed. Twitter is touted as more popular but the fact remains it isn't always that easy to track a conversation and the content types you can have a conversation about are severely limited to text and perhaps an image via the likes of TwitPic.
- Paul Jacobson
Hi folks! People from all over the world are having fun, conversation and a good time on FriendFeed. Like me. From The Netherlands.
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
Hi, folks! Please give generously to libraries! People rely on libraries for internet access & technology assistance, among other things.
- josh neff, geek at large
Hai! to the bunch of people at Kinnernet! \o/

hey everyone! friendfeed is an amazing piece of technology.

Hi everyone! I have just started actively using friendfeed, and the real time updating blows me away. It's so strange to see comments appearing, and seeing my own tweets instantly appear is always surprising. Friendfeed is incredible!
- Sam Guzman
Robert: there are definitely some really smart and talented people there!
- Paul Jacobson
With clever filters, friendfeed real-time could support thousands of people chatting about the same topics at the same time, and filter it to have a meaningfull real-time overview on all topics and all people
- Charbax
Yo Charbax, have you tried FF on Archos 5 yet?
- Nir Ben Yona
@Charbax: I like that: "friendfeed is like ICQ for 21st century" ...that's a good start, but it's more than that and has more potential. just one opinion, of course. ;-)
- .LAG liked that
Yup it works fine on Archos, also the realtime ajax stuff
- Charbax
I would say is the Usenet/mix AOL chat rooms of the 90's.
- Santa CW™
I'd like on friendfeed to type in any topic that I like and get some real-time chat/updates going on in that.
- Charbax
Thanks for sharing this with us Robert. Great conversation to listen in on.
- Bill Heslin
friendfeed is to social media like ctrl-alt-delete is to windows! - indispensable!
- Ryan Gerritsen
Ummm, Robert - I don't know if you follow me, you used to, but I kinda just cursed in a post, so if your demo people are the sensitive type, ummm, yeah, make em look the other way?
- Matthew DeVries
FYI: Kinnernet conference is named after Lake Kinneret in north Israel, where Jesus is claimed to be walking on water.
- Nir Ben Yona
I have to scroll up and click comment to add a message here. I think friendfeed should have the post message box stay there at the bottom by default
- Charbax
friendfeed should perhaps provide chat embed type of feature so this friendfeed "chat" can replace the IRC thing on http://www.ustream.tv/channel...
- Charbax
Don't think $100 laptops can be made out of quality materials.
- Nir Ben Yona
@Nir, they wouldn't be considered quality. It would be throw away machines which is where everything is going.
- Santa CW™
@nir, I don't think netbooks scream quality either
- mjc
Disposable computers. Easy to buy then burn. Kind of like prepaid cell phones.

Friendfeed induces behaviour change. Eg, "Kinnernet who? Friendfeed search..." http://friendfeed.com/search... A few days ago, "Kinnernet who? Google..."
- Andy Bold
Michael: you should have seen my Asus N10 ;) but seriously, there's a big difference between reasonable stuff and crap. Arrington realized that with his tablet device.
- Nir Ben Yona
The major cost of the Android laptop is the screen. The rest is electronic peanuts
- Charbax
@Nir, I just don't see 1024x600 as usable for a non-mobile OS. also failure rates for netbooks are still pretty much unknown
- mjc
Michael: Very usable, besides video editing I literally do everything with this kind of resolution and have no probs. BTW, the N10 community has found a way to upgrade this resolution to 1024 X 768, but it really doesn't matter (except when it comes to games support).
- Nir Ben Yona
@Nir, what about the huge number of crappy windows apps and some Linux ones that assume you have at 768 or more vertical lines? there is a lot of that...
- mjc
Michael: I totally agree about the Linux issue, way too annoying. On the other hand, the number of windows apps that support X600 resolution is increasing and more adjustable than before, still a lot to improve though.
- Nir Ben Yona
The only thing about Israelis is that once they figure out friendfeed, Robert, they'll show you how to do it better.
- George Hall (Australia)
It depends on what you want to do/what sort of riding your going to be doing. Do you want a hard tail(just front suspension) or dual suspension?
- Michael Gross
I've owned several Trek's and have been very happy with all of them.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Michael: dual suspension. I'm getting old and the softer ride is worth it (I've already tested that out).
- Robert Scoble
Michael: I'll be on mostly flat trails, though, but who knows? Even then, though, the dual suspension is something I felt on just street riding and like a lot.
- Robert Scoble
I like my Diamondback - a bit heavier than most, but more solid
- Jason
Vikrum: are there any Santa Cruz in my price range, though?
- Robert Scoble
cannondale is a good bike, Trek also makes some mean mid range bikes, i use this site for info http://www.mtbr.com/
- Adam B
A professional rider today told me that in my price range Specialized and Trek are good to consider.
- Robert Scoble
Giant Trance X2. High quality yet affordable. By all means check out Mountain Bike Review (http://www.mtbr.com) for user reviews, trail ratings, discussions, etc. And then sign up so I can say I was on mtbr.com before you.
- Sue Radd
Cannondale all the way. Depending on how "mountain" you want. You may want to look at a hybrid. Road tires are so much easier to push.
- Hans
Hans: I'm going to be mostly on dirt, but doubt I'll go out in the mud very often, so hybrid might be OK. I like the traction I get with knobby tires, though.
- Robert Scoble
I have had a Specialized for almost twenty years. no shox or special suspension but worked great on bumpy Volcano dirt trails near Bend Oregon last summer.
- Dave Blockhus
Specialized has always been my favorite bike brand
- Jesse Stay
I also vote for canondale I have one that is 15+years old and I am a heavy rider (270) in total time owned other then tune ups 2 repairs shifter and BB axle. AWESOME AMERICAN BIKE CO.
- zac_in_ak
I do have to say that friendfeed is demonstrating something very killer here: real time product feedback. I'm writing a blog post about this.
- Robert Scoble
Sorry, but I have to lobby for the Trance, 'cause that's what I ride. (modded earlier model to add disc brakes and a better Fox fork.) :-) http://tinyurl.com/cl4moa
- Sue Radd
If you're buying new and this year's model, the Trek Fuel EX 5.5. It's on the high end of that range, but it's a great frameset with quality components everywhere. I've ridden it: very comfortable, plenty of suspension travel when you need it, and it will make you feel confident and secure. It's tough to beat Trek on value, and they really stand behind their products. I have four Treks right now, and they all rock. But don't forget used bikes: you can save a pile and still get something nice.
- Chris Baskind
Chris: so now I have to decide whether to go Cannondale or Trek or Specialized. You all are no help! :-)
- Robert Scoble
Man, one could imagine a very slick marketplace integration with services like FF...especially for situations like this.
- Christopher A Carr
I would go with the bike that you feel most comfortable on. It is all a matter of preference. Every rider has a different riding style, body type, etc. I own a trek fuel ex8...good all around bike! I've also have two Kona hardtails, which are bomb proof! Visit your local bike shop and let them know your budget, and the type of riding you will be doing. Try as many as you can...once you sit on the bike, you will know in the first 5min. Like an interview! Ha!
- nilo ayson
Can't go wrong with Specialized and Trek. Heck, go with Trek to feel some solidarity with Lance!
- Troy Malone
I'd recommend a Trek. I've beaten the heck out of those things on the trails, and they just last and ask for more. Seems the 6 series are in your price range http://www.trekbikes.com/us...
- Al
It really depends what you want to do. Where do you want to ride? With friends and family around some trails or do you want to do some more serious cross-country or downhill mountain biking. Either way resist getting something with dual suspention in that price range - it's slow & heavy and junky. Kona's a better value and you might want to look at the speedy street/trail friendly DR DEW http://www.konaworld.com/09_drde... or the more KULA http://www.konaworld.com/09_kula... - PS) Live to ride!
- Adam Horne
I just bought a new Trek 4300. Its a nice cost-for-value solution - they are good for not-yet-professionals, yet hold up nicely even for heavy-set riders (me :))
- Yariv Zur
Victor: why? My friends are here. They aren't on hunch. I trust the people here on friendfeed and Twitter a lot more than on Hunch.
- Robert Scoble
was thinking maybe a used one... but i bought mine from speedgoat.com -- incredible service and best prices online by far. worth a look for sure.
- Vikrum J. Singh
you said great, now you have to pick between a cannondale, a trek, and a specialized mountain bike. That's not a problem, I actually test road all 3 at the sea otter on thursday and they are all great bike companies. The answer to chose between the three is easy. Go to your local friendly neighborhood bike shop and see which one of the three they carry.
- Ilya Rivkin
Agree that all three make very nice bicycles. CL or a local bike shop. Find the best bike for the money that feels good to you...
- Christopher A Carr
Ilya is right: It all starts with a great bike shop. Go visit a few and do exactly what you do with tech companies. The good people will be apparent, and those are the folks you want to buy from.
- Chris Baskind
Look for a Cross Country frame for light trail riding. They're usually lighter and position your body better for longer distances. Dual Suspension often have more aggressive downhill frame geometries.
- timmann
You know, given that every single good MTB is going to have some mix of Shimano and SRAM parts, have suspension from a small group of companies, is made in a small selection of factories in Taiwan, etc. I think it's mostly about which one happens to be available at a nice place with non-asshole salesfolk and happens to fit you the best.
- Wirehead
Oh, and unless you are in the mud, knobby tire traction is an illusion. I've gone through all sorts of bay area mountain biking trails and not once have I said "Gee, the knob between my legs isn't enough. I need a bunch of knobs on my tires!" But, given that most Hybrids are intended to be riden a maximum of 500 miles before being thrown out, you might just want to get a nice MTB and then change the tires out afterwards.
- Wirehead
Ryan: here's th thing about friendfeed, though. If you ask a question and I "like" it, it goes to the same people who would see my own question. So, do you need 90,000 followers or only one follower?
- Robert Scoble
Pretty interesting to see how this worked--asking for feedback. I ride a Trek Fuel EX7--probably above the range you set but not by much. My wife bought it for me asking all her mtb friends. She does XTERRA races. She was told and I agree, it was well worth the extra money to step up from the EX 5.5. And as someone said, Lance rides Treks. He road a Top Fuel at last years Leadville 100.
- Bob McAllaster
I'd go with either Santa Cruz or Scott, they offer real pro bikes in wide range of levels. Oh, and Robert, I'm so waiting for the video of Scoble Doing Downhill.
- Nir Ben Yona
Nir: in the $1,500 level? Trek seems better at that level than the others.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: I was riding pro for many years. With bikes, you can put 5 people in a room and hear 10 different opinions. My first advice would be to go and test each one of the models for yourself. Second, is to get the exact size that fits your body (very important). Third, buy the right accessories. Fourth, join a group at your level. Finally, Trek are good, no doubt, but IMHO Scott are better, but yet again, go and ask for a test ride.
- Nir Ben Yona
One more thing: if you're planning a trail ride, dual suspension won't be good. Make sure you can lock the rear suspension, otherwise it would take extra energy from you.
- Nir Ben Yona
Nir: but it's a lot more comfortable. I tried that out already.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: It is ! but if you ride 20 miles of flat trail, the rear suspension will force you to put more effort, that's why you should buy dual suspension with locking option. As for the gears, you won't need XTR, i think that XT will be enough at this point.
- Nir Ben Yona
Robert, I took this Giant Anthem 1, some crazy places in the European Alps over 2500km and all I got was one flat. http://is.gd/tpjLhttp://is.gd/tplp. If you are after a smooth rolling dual suspension with propedal rear shock for 'widish' forest tracks and 'smoothish' single track I think this would be ideal.
- Jan Zimak
Robert; a hard question to answer without substantially more information. Generally if you stick with the top brands you will get a good bike but, to get one that is best suited to your riding style and terrain the best approach would be to contact your local mountain bike club and ask which are the most reputable bike shops. the go to 2-3 of them to get their advice/recommendation. Word of warning: unless the sales person wants to know a lot about you, your interests and where/how you ride. walk away.
- Wayne Blackshaw
Robert, you definitely want a hard-tail (i.e front suspension only) for flat trail riding. If comfort is an issue, replace the stock saddle with a really good foam-gel-filled model that has a cutaway to reduce pressure on the crotch. Also, padded short/pant liner for added cushioning. Also, I would suggest you get a model with click gear shifters, rather than the twist variety. In my experience, shifting on the fly is much smoother and easier with the click variety.
- Phil Essing
Phil: I'll take another look, but I dramatically liked the ones with dual suspension better.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: well, then, definitely follow the advice of those who suggest a model with a lockable rear-suspension. My advice on saddle replacement and padded short/pant liners stands. For longer duration riding, rear suspension will do nothing to ease the comfort in the crotch and seat-bone areas.
- Phil Essing
Phil: cool. the trail I'll be on most has some up and down, some ruts, 30% asphalt, 70% dirt/gravel. I doubt I'd be riding more than an hour very often. I'm not that kind of guy. Someday, if I really get into it, maybe, but I'm at least two years away from that and probably never. Got two kids, so getting more than an hour for exercise is going to be very tough until they are older.
- Robert Scoble
This is the coolest thread in a while. ;-)
- Chris Baskind
Robert: Sounds like the terrain mix that I mostly ride. One last bit of advice: never ride without an emergency kit. Get a strap on tire pump, and a saddle bag that you can stuff with a multi-tool, two or three tire levers, spare inner-tube, and a pair of latex gloves. Why the gloves? For that inevitable moment when, while shifting, your chain derails. With the gloves, you can quickly get that chain back in place without getting your hands all messed-up with grease.
- Phil Essing
Oh, and if you're the DIY type, here's a site you're going to definitely want to bookmark: http://bicycletutor.com/ Lots of great video tutorials on how to maintain and care for your new trusty steed.
- Phil Essing
Nir Ben Yona: Been lurking on those forums for quite some time. Definitely, another great source of info for the MTB'er.
- Phil Essing
Get a double bike trailer and take your two lovelies along for the ride.
- Ken Oatman
Love my Gary Fisher. Have had it for 15 years. Indestructible.
- Jeff
My top picks are Sta Cruz Blur XC or Giant Trance. You should also look at 29ers (29" wheels instead of 26"). They are all the rage and make riding over obstacles even easier.
- Craig Villamor
You have a lot of good feedback so far. I bought a Trek 4300 (hardtail) 5 years ago and love it. Have upgraded almost all the components, but the lightweight aluminum frame is durable and pretty light. If I was in the market for a new full suspension, I'd look at the Trek FuelEX or Gary Fisher full suspension. You might rethink your hardtail/FS decision. You'll get better components for your $ with a hardtail, and less maintenance. If you go FS you may want to up your budget to $1500 to $2000.
- Charles Hanskat
Many good choices from Specialized, Trek, Cannondale, etc. The key is getting the proper fit. Go to a decent (not high end) independent bike shop like Valencia Cyclery in SF (valenciacyclery.com). If you join the SF Bike Coalition (sfbike.com), most SF bike shops will give you a discount, too. You can often find a great deal on last year's models, too. Bike to Work Day is May 14th, so now is the time....
- Tony Wasserman
Yep...don't even bother with anything other than Santa Cruz. It's what my friend Chris uses and he does 24 hour mountain bike races.
- Alex Scoble
Have a look at the GT 'Force' series or Gary Fisher 'Roscoe' Series. Opt for full suspension along with clip-less pedals/shoes IMHO.
- Walt Ruppar
Robert: I'm in San Mateo and ride Purisima Creek Road (starting from the Skyline Side) pretty frequently. Lots of good riding in MPROSD preserves. DM me if you ever want to ride. I'm slow and non-threatening, I promise.
- Sue Radd
What do you want to ride? Bike path, singletrack, doubletrack, downhill, etc...
- Chris Greene
Robert, looked at your description of trails and riding conditions above and here's my most sage advice. BUY THE BIKE THAT FITS! - Don
- Chris Greene
't listen to anyone that's telling you a model. Go ride some Treks, Specialized, Cannondale whatever features you like and settle on something that fits you and i comfortable.
- Chris Greene
I wouldn't go fancy with suspension (front fork will do). And no need for exotic materials until you start racing (stay away from carbon fiber). If you start to pound singletrack the mainline brands (Trek, Spec, Cannon) will all fall apart on you. Buy something with a good kit (Shimano LX, XT), and again be comfortable and nice fitting. You can only decide this by test riding bikes. Don't mistake mountain biking with a mountain bike.
- Chris Greene
If you are only going to ride the coastal roads in HMB or bike paths, a mountain bike is not the right way to go.
- Chris Greene
Gary Fisher is a Trek brand. They maintain a lot of their traditional character, though. And they're beautifully finished. My Klein road bike is also Trek.
- Chris Baskind
Robert: I know you do. The question is do you really ride them? If yes, then I think a god hardtail THAT FITS with a nice fork is a good choice for you. If you don't ride them and think you might, I would suggest you start off with something better suited to the stuff you do ride. The range of stuff in HMB can go from easy climbs and bike paths to super gnarly stuff on Montara Mtn. that's the kind of things I've ridden with a 50LB dual suspension bike with 10" of travel.
- Chris Greene
Robert: ....my first mtn bike was a aluminum hardtail and was great for a couple of years. When I obsessed about it I upgraded. If I had never gone down the pro road I would have been fine with that simple bike for the rest of my days. The problem was that you can never "make" an expensive or simple bike fit you and it will not be fun.
- Chris Greene
I had a Cannondale. Nearly took my eye out mountainbiking and falling over a cactus, so I stopped.
- Francine Hardaway
forget the mountain bike, buy a euro style bike like the following and ride in normal clothes every day somewhere! Far better to do 1-10km every day than 50km on a sat or sun, I do 10km a day on my swiss bike and am in the best shape ever: http://usa.batavus.com/http://www.civiacycles.com/civiaco... text me if you need further euro bike buying advice :-) ! …Roland +1 604 729 7924
- Roland Tanglao
Hooray for city bikes. I've hardly ridden anything else since buying mine.
- Chris Baskind
Speak to your local bike shop. The support they will provide when things go wrong or you want to upgrade is worthwhile. You can also try the bike which is important. The larger manufacturers can probably get you a better set of components for the money but it will be less unique. Trek, Marin, Specialized are all good in my opinion. How you feel on the bike and the dealer support are more important to a new biker in my opinion, assuming you are fairly new to this?
- Andrew Edwards
Robert: Andrew Edwards comment just above is great advice: find a shop you like and trust, the best result will come from that. Also key, and already said: get a bike that fits, from a shop that understands fit. There aren't many bad bikes made anymore, especially in the $1000 and up price range. That said, I work at Specialized, and follow you on twitter, so DM me if you want to talk more. @matthewscd
- matthewscd
Robert: Specialized Stump Jumper. http://tinyurl.com/owcdfw I have bought this bike 2x ( the first one was stolen out of my garage) It is way more than I will ever use as I like to ride around SF and to the North Bay, but have taken it down nutty trail rides in Tahoe as well. It certainly has the "you know your bikes" quality as whenever I take it to get tunes up the gearheads always...
- Kevin Murray
Well, did you get one??? My advice is similar to a couple others. Work with a local bike shop who works with you to FIT you on a bike. More than anything else, finding a bike and tuning it to your body and riding style will go farther than anything to make it an enjoyable sport.
- Dave Ploch
What type of riding do you want to do? XC or downhill. There's a significant difference in bike design and tech between the two. I'm an XC rider myself and rode a Santa Cruz superlight before switching to a KHS 904r. Both are dual suspension. I would highly recommend dual over a hardtail. Superior handling, climbing and comfort on those 100km rides.
- Troy Forster
Wow Building 43 really is as big as Area 51!
- Jan Simmonds
Cannondale Bay Boy Ultra is what I have. comes with nice road rims and front shock is in the head tube and can be turned on and off and has disc brakes. I bought a separate set of mountain bike rims and they swap on and off easily. Two bikes for the price of 1.5

google ads thought for a good month last fall that I had a huge hardon for tactical surveillance gear. Parabolic mics, night vision spotting scopes..... I'm wondering who bought what with my credit card.
- Matthew DeVries
Well, it did become something you shared on..
- Thomas Bøhm
I only ever see a broken image icon in Facebook ads =) Takes up a lot less space that way too.
- LogEx
Nicholas - Aye, I was jesting. I avoid FB like the plague, regardless of having Friends there; there's no depth of experience on the platform - as demonstrated by the display adverts.
- zeroinfluencer
Since you don't think you need one of these, am I to assume you already have one? :)
- Rob La Gesse
Rob, I don't yet have one. Hmmm... maybe Facebook is on to something.

If I own a wall and invite everyone and anyone to come and write graffiti on it, then what have I actually got? Initially I may have an interesting collage that everyone wants to look at, but at the end of the day, when people have moved on back to quality content, in reality I just have a messy wall. Who’d want to advertise next to that? - More at http://blog.famebook.com

I get all these dating ads and I've specifically selected I'm no on FB for dating, utter useless. Get the targets right it might work but I tend to ignore ads.
- Kol Tregaskes
Nearly every ad I get from Facebook for a local business is in San Francisco. I live in Seattle. I haven't lived in the Bay Area since before I joined Facebook. I've been conducting a little experiment lately, giving a thumbs down to every ad from a business in California, marking them as irrelevant. I have yet to get an ad for a business in Seattle. Their ad system isn't just bad, it's horrendously and completely broken.
- Kevin Pedraja
Kevin - I think (i know) it has to do with WHO places the ads too.
- zeroinfluencer
David: What do you mean? Are local advertisers asking for their ads to be shown to people who live 900 miles away? I don't think I'd want to pay for those clicks if it were me... And how hard is it for Facebook to look at my home address and serve me ads that at least have a slight chance of being relevant. (Sorry, this has been annoying me for a while now... ;))
- Kevin Pedraja
Facebook need to charge a $1 a year the ads are hopeless
- Thomas Power
That's a good point Thomas - 23 million users? It can't be more than 23 million dollars to run that thing
- Matthew DeVries
Looks like she's sitting on the loo...
- Kathy Johnson
I didn't even know there were ads on Facebook. I've only ever used it with Firefox and ABP. Apparently it works pretty well.

Wow, that ad is so bad, I'd think it was a competitor of theirs running it. wtf?

- Louis Gray
Higlet, this was the right post in which to do it. :)
- Louis Gray
Oh lord. Now you've gone and done it. You've created a black hole in the fabric of the universe and we will all be sucked into an alternate reality. Thankfully we won't notice, because we will still see a reality.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
Pffft. Are you trying to demonstrate that not all browsers are created equal? Not only do I not use FF for FF (you heard) the fact that I did just to make sure highlights a very important point. I discuss that more here: http://beta.friendfeed.com/worldof...
- WorldofHiglet
Hi Leo...Maybe I'm being stupid, but I'm in the UK at the moment and even for a night owl like me may peak by 5pm! How can I watch a recording tomorrow? Advice appreciated...
- Jan Simmonds
I can see the linking friends who use two of the same service being useful, but, I enjoy keeping aspects of my social life separated from each other.
- Mike Nayyar
So how is what we've seen different from what Facebook connect already kinda sorta did already?
- Mike Nayyar
The permission sets in Facebook allow you to keep them separate if you want to. You can scope the broadcast of your stream.
- Cliff Gerrish
It's sorta like Facebook Connect for the Major sites.
- Cliff Gerrish
Wow you guys really not keen on twitter round here are you!
- Scott Gould
Scott: Twitter doesn't recommend following me, and I don't recommend following it. I do use it, though, and have for years.
- Robert Scoble
also, it doesn't matter if celebs are on twitter. the best part about twitter is that you only see what you want to see. you don't HAVE to subscribe to the celebs any more than you HAVE to read the tabloids every week.
- girk
girk: I autofollow anyone who follows me so that my followers can send me DMs. Unfortunately that means more and more spammers and robot accounts.
- Robert Scoble
i'm more concerned about all of the illiterates who are joining. it hurts my eyes and my brain and my heart to read all of their terrible excuses for the english language. same solution as before (ie don't follow them), but since my username is @melissa now, i see them a LOT in my @reply tab......
- girk
girk: yeah, luckily I'm safe from the worst of that, although I'm watching a lot of average Tweets just to see what effect the masses are having on Twitter. So far I don't see much of any effect at all. This post was halfway in jest, but it's closer to the truth than you might realize.
- Robert Scoble
I know you do - and it was on your recommendation I started with FriendFeed (albeit, still getting into it)
- Scott Gould
LOL - it's so true. Genuine connections are becoming harder and harder to come by
- Scott Gould
I'm guilty in adding Ashton & Demi. I added them before Ashton had the "war" with CNN though. I also have Brent Spiner (but if he keeps it up, I'm going to unflollow him), LeVar Burton, Anderson Cooper and Stephen Fry. Stephen's tweets are sometimes amusing. *lol* I refuse to add Oprah or any other celeb though.
- Molly, "sorry"
I look back on the time that I spent on Twitter back in mid and late 2007 with mostly fond memories. Now, not so much.
- Chris Parton
The biggest joke to me is Ashton's declaration of the power of social media - whilst being advertised on TV??? Excellent post for those who haven't read it: http://is.gd/sZLi
- Scott Gould
I completely agree - with or without celebs Twitter is what it is and always will be. And, we can use it or not use it accordingly. So what's the big deal?
- Martha
It's just as easy to ignore celebs on Twitter as it is anywhere else!
- Larry Hawes
None of my family members, close friends, or business colleagues use any of these tools (I've always been the resident propeller head), so the crowd on Twitter is actually kind of fun for me. Not at all interested in engaging with the Hollywood celebs, but the the flow of the overall discussion strikes me as worthwhile, probably because I take a pattern recognition approach, and proceed accordingly. For me, the first few go- rounds were less engaging--critical mass lacking.
- Kathy Fitch
I wish Hulu had more content and less restrictions, though its more the networks than Hulu. If all of BSG (mini-series to season 4) was on Hulu you wouldn't see me for a week
- Daniel
Ralph - there are several shows on hulu that I would like to watch that take ages to come over the UK
- Iain
I guess Leo stopped using the Stickam comment system.
- Tokyo Dan
Hulu needs to realize a screen is a screen, and it doesn't matter what device is feeding it.
- Ken Sheppardson
@Jamie I haven't heard of project Kangaroo.. but judging by the tense you used its no longer about?
- ralphsaunders
Friendfeed integration on live.twit.tv is great
- Rod Bauer
Hulu is the future, eventually data will be a utility for me to do with what I please and I will watch what I want and when I want to watch it
- Daniel
@ralph it was shut down by the comeptition commission. it was essentially a collaboration between the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV... and the CC ruled that it would stifle competition in video content creation
- Jamie
It went down right after I clicked this link "http://beta.friendfeed.com/twi... - Ken Sheppardson " It brought the whole FF site up in that little comment window.
- Tokyo Dan
Interesting that its most recently that we've been seeing more news on this sort of thing. Between the malware in the power grid, these fiber sabatoges, and the Chinese GhostNet (Security Now had a great ep on it), its certainly been an interesting cluster of seemingly related events.
- Curtis Schweitzer
Do the MAE-West/Central/East exchanges still serve as the critical aggregation that they used to?
- Ken Sheppardson
If friendfeed had a way to automatically make imaginary friends for all your twiiter contacts that aren't on FF then I'd probably stop going to twitter.
- Ghworg
someone here has to hack the confiker bot net and then ddos micky :p
- Sander
ghworg, you can, but have to add the feeds manually too it
- Chris Heath
agreed ghworg. or at least simply implement a full client access into the site. so that all of your tweets come into FF.
- Jamie

it's standard phising. did it in high school and got everybody's itslearning accounts. basically just edit all the /dir/dir/ to http://twitter.com/dir/dir in the code and implement it. change the user and password boxes scripts to save input and then redirect to twitter.com,
- Jackson Pollock
If you can read this, send help! I'm trapped inside FriendFeed Beta and it's hungry!

phil; don't disrespect. pollock was arguably the best american artist of the 20th century.

i would agree that he was arguably the best artist of the 20th century... and I would be on the side of the argument that says he was not

It wasn't an official statement about Jobs. It was a leak

I'm telling you Jobs is working on the iPub for the Apple campus, Schilller Shots and Jonathan Ive is almost finished crafting the iPint Glass

yeah ghworg, but i can still wish for it

Steve or no Steve. The person running the actual strategy and product development; the identity of Apple, is Jonathan Ive. Steve's entire success can be traced back to Ive' strategy and methodology. Steve and Jony talk once a day. He introduced Apple to the few products - fewer products that has been so successful. As an industrial designer, he changed the way Steve looked at products, materials, process. The white plastic cover of the Ipod, the scroll wheel click, the aluminium unibody.

Howard Stern was granted a private viewing with Palm of the Pre. For an hour and a half he used it, and then passed on it for a Blackberry. He did get the impression that it would be coming out in May, but not worth waiting.
- Jackson Pollock
What's the point? They're all to expensive for me anyway.
- Mike Vierow
Jackson: What I heard was as soon as he found out the Pre won't support Lotus Notes (which he needs) he punted.
- Ken Sheppardson
Howard Stern got a Blackberry because he uses Lotus Notes and niether the Palm Pre or iPhone have great Lotus notes support compared to the Blackberry
- Matthew
ralphsaunders: for most probably the "it's not an iphone"...
- Holger Eilhard
Ken; that wasn't it. it just didn't do anything special. iphone has the browser, the podcasting. Blackberry the lotus notes and the keyboard. The Pre really didn't have anything.
- Jackson Pollock
@ralphsaunders the apps, overall ease of use, etc. are more important than a physical keyboard for me...
- Holger Eilhard
The pre is all about the web, the idea is to sync with the cloud not the desktop. A bad idea in my opinion, but we'll see
- Ghworg
let's be honest. what made the iphone more successful than the others; 1. the design and interaction. 2. the brand and buzz. 3. the marketing and news
- Jackson Pollock
what is the delicious url for this show?

i'm hoping that android will be mature in a year and a half when my iphone contract is up... i'll check in on the phone wars then and no sooner

Jamie - Thats pay as you go which is a total rip off anyway
- Iain
Jackson: In Germany 99 percent of cellphone users I know have voicemail enabled
- Holger Eilhard
I think also in the UK its become very fashionable between (and i hate to use this phrase) the lower class to have the latest phone so that also boosts the market.
- ralphsaunders
I agree Jamie... to facebook deffinately... the more 'plugged in' group of my friends have also moved to twitter although that is a small minority
- ralphsaunders
Holger; Americans expect a box that answers the number they are calling, and that they can leave a message there
- Jackson Pollock
gunther there's a block go to their page and block (next to subscribe)
- Chris Heath
Yeah I can see twitter being next. I think I might get into user interface development in that area... it might become profitable for a short while :P
- ralphsaunders
i'm on roadrunner, and it's fine for now... no cap - afaik if they change the plans it will only affect new subscribers - i'd be grandfathered in

didnt know hosting was so bandwidth intensive..
- Jamie
some people can't afford 150 a month and use that much
- Xenophrenia
How is IPTV going to succeed with this. it's an enormous roadblock
- Jackson Pollock
I don't want to go back to how it was on dial-up when I had a clock by the side of the computer so I didn't spend too much time online and get a huge bill
- Ghworg
Jamie: By definition it's bandwidth intensive :) Hosting = Bandwidth
- Eric Florenzano
Limits cause people to be more conservative in their usage. They will be less likely to try new things, like streaming video.
- Ghworg
Ghworg: Compuserve used to charge by the time and they had a big clock on the top right corner of the app. You could set it to kick you off after a certain duration.
- Eric Florenzano
they are trying to protect their cable tv and prohibit online tv and video
- Xenophrenia
Sure this isn't just a ploy to get people to lock down their Wifi?
- Jackson Pollock
router firmware is the place to put the meter... or even better on the cable modem... then you could check on your account page for the isp
- Chris Heath
$75 bucks a month is a better price for the top tier.
- archaictree
jackson lots of ppl are locking down their wifi here... it's hard for me to get an open ap these days
- Chris Heath
most routers come out of the box locked down
- Jamie
I pay around $55 for 8 down, 2 up. totally unlimited
- Martin Eberhardt
with all media going to the internet, bandwidth caps are going to limit a lot of what you can do
- Matthew
If people have limited bandwidth, they'll put a password on the Wifi and force their neighbors to get their own line.
- Jackson Pollock
they are having an issue with people cancelling their cable and keeping internet and watching their video online ... that's what they are trying to stop
- Xenophrenia
It would be awesome if FriendFeed could figure out how to link an IRC server to FriendFeed conversations. Each conversation could get its own channel.
- Jesse Stay
Here's a request; get the videos of the old episodes hosted. the best twit's by far were 21, 23, 24, and so on, and they were filmed but are no longer hosted. people would love them, but Leo is holding them back, get them out there!
- Jackson Pollock
I like that the bitgravity feed lets you pause and resume without missing anything like the others do.
- Jeff
my favourite was the one after Apple announced the move to Intel.
- Jamie
Jamie; if you read the twit wiki, I listed all the taped live shows, but many are missing hosting, and those who aren't are bad quality mostly. get them really hosted
- Jackson Pollock
actually I think it was the Tech Guy - Leo had John come on to talk about the move to Intel. John said it was a great move, Leo said Apple would die (something like that!)
- Jamie
Jamie; yes that is true. However, early TWiT, the first episode with John on. (I'll check, but around 10) Leo played that interview
- Jackson Pollock
And for those interested. Episodes 15-19 are the best shows they ever made. The I get no spam thing started there, Revision3 early beginning, Kevin talks about first Diggnation shows and so on. Very very very funny.
- Jackson Pollock
I remember listening to them at the time. literally recall when John first said he gets no spam and I think Leo just died laughing
- Jamie
My dad told me he got no spam and then i showed him his spam box :P
- ralphsaunders
Jamie; it was a Steve Gibson - John thing. Steve turned off HTML emails and John yelled at him, saying he got NO SPAM what so ever, with HTML. Steve and John work fantastic together
- Jackson Pollock
yeah John said he had this setup from a friend right?
- Jamie
ralph; sell your pc. if you want to run a program like final cut, a cheap pc won't work. apple is expensive yes, but thats what's needed 90% of the time
- Jackson Pollock
uhhhhh that needs to be Leo's avatar
- Chad DeHaan
I would build my own PC... I'm not stupid :D. But the Apple side of things I think is a bit much for me. It will probably go on a student loan when i go to uni
- ralphsaunders
I thought you didn't have to pay it off till u started earning above a certain amoutn
- ralphsaunders
Gunther; until you want to update it; then you have to format. It's cool in theory, but it does not work. Every update breaks your OS. 10.5 is one download, 10.5.1 is one, and so on. you have to tailor the build for each version. doesn't work
- Jackson Pollock
walt they're going to talk about the diggbar next week
- Chris Heath
they give you a year... then if you earn above £15k you start paying it back. the more you earn the more you pay. I expect them to take out £90 from my salary this month
- Jamie
how about when you tricked Stallman to sing the GNU song
- Jackson Pollock
Although my prefered fields + a few others "User interface designers can make about $86,000 on average each year. Package designers can earn an average annual salary of $82,000." ... although idk if I want to do that full time yet
- ralphsaunders
Jackson: I just don't find him funny. He seems like a smart guy--he should try to do a serious show maybe.
- Eric Florenzano
Oh man, a TWiT meetup for Star Trek would be awesome.
- Eric Florenzano
He's of the Jim Carrey school of broadcasting. But people forget that Carrey is a standup, just being loud and screaming doesn't work
- Jackson Pollock
Plus the show is repeating right now, so it's appropriate

This experiment prompted some feedback to Paul RE how they could make embedding easier.

I wish I could remember which movie it was where the insects all buzz towards the UV light saying ‘it’s so beautiful’….(If someone remembers, please comment!) That’s my own personal take on these once hugely bankable Hollywood brands whose rather asinine online antics are with every tweet or poorly presented profile, becoming just another girl or guy next door. I predict a story arising...

The notifier is my favorite new feature in a long time. Try it out and let me know what you think. (it works on OSX, Windows, and Linux, btw)
- Paul Buchheit
Yes, it is pretty darn great, especially when you have it focus on a short list of people you really must interact with in almost realtime. With it turned on to too many people, it is an overlapping chore. Thanks for the cool apps!
- Josh Haley
I try it ones, but no. Somehow I have come to dislike notifiers... Not my thing, I ratherly use sidebar on firefox :)
- Kristian Salonen
I just did. Thanks for the reminder!
- Robert Scoble
Yes, and <3... wish it was resizeable, though. excellent otherwise.

Nope. Adobe Air sucks huge resources. My Mac only has 4G of RAM and I can't run Air Apps.
- Mistletoe Glen
I love it. It's the least intrusive Air App I've seen. I would like the ability to add my comments and likes and a list. That would really make it easier to keep up with conversations. :)
- Andrew
Glen, Air can be a resource hog, but the notifier seems to use less memory that some other Air apps (on my computer, TweetDeck has a 283MB resident size, by the notifier is only 54MB).
- Paul Buchheit
air... ick... installed, but not too hopeful
- anna sauce
man, i'm wishing i hadn't downloaded. i already have growl notifications and mail notifications ... overwhelmed.
- Lynne d Johnson
This tool is usefull, but not my need. I don't like to be disruptted.

from BuddyFeed
You can have FF and Twitter on your desktop with one app: Thwirl. And, with Thwirl you can turn off ALL notifications.
- Phil Essing
from twhirl
Yes, but only works sometimes and when it works, it's updates popups hell. :)
- Rui Pereira
@JoshHaley I agree, great for a small subset like coworkers or family, but not for your entire feed.
- karl dotter
Ok, a couple thoughts. Once I installed the app I had updates constantly, often one over another so this means #1) I am missing way too much good content, #2) I have a very rich experience on Friendfeed since I seem to want to ignore most Twitter updates but want to click into most FF updates, and #3) if I left this thing on I would get zero work done. This application is too dangerous for me. Sorry guys, i had to turn it off. Good to see you are making the experience flexible for all though. Thanks.
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
The problem I have with AIR is that it wakes up the CPU constantly. air apps + battery life = fail.
- mjc
Phil, Thwirl is a full desktop client, which is great if that's what you're looking for. The notifier is just a very simple and lightweight notifier, which makes it very easy to passively keep up with what's happening on FriendFeed in real-time.
- Paul Buchheit
wish you could disabled comments...otherwise, not bad really not blown away i'm afraid
- Zee.
I installed it. It works just as intended. Then I uninstalled it. Not my cup of tea. But it works great and the installation was flawless.
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
...it seems to work best--and less noisily--if you make a list of favorite FF content (people and/or rooms) and set the notifier to that...
- .LAG liked that
I keep meaning to ask people what they're going on about a FriendFeed notifier. Installing this as soon as I get home.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I use twhirl for FF notifications, works well because I also use it for Twitter when my Tweetdeck api requests run out, and for seesmic
- AJ Leon
from twhirl
Yeah I'd love to use it but Air is a resource hog I just can't deal with.
- EricaJoy
Another thought, I think the X button on the top right could be bigger. I seem to be accidentally opening liks quite a bit when I'm trying to close the pop up.
- Andrew
No, not yet - thank you for the reminder
- Susan Beebe
I did, and promptly removed it after getting pop-ups every second.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
My ADD ass wouldn't be able to handle the distraction.
- Brad Williamson
I installed it but with Twhirl sending me twitter updates and that popping up it get's really confusing of what's going on. Plus Twhirl works fine for me.
- Patrick
from twhirl
Yes, but don't really keep it on. The sheer amount of activity is so high that notifier is a major distraction from whatever I am doing. I only turn it on when I'm browsing FF fulltime.
- Parth Awasthi
I need another popup like a hole in my head.
- TranceMist
Not really interesting. Friendfeed is getting kinda boring tbh.
- Spencer
it's the dreaded ADOBE AIR. avoid it like the plague! :)
- Zio Bonino
Notifier without actual interface=useless to me.
- timedalkat
from twhirl
Just installed it but notifiers without filtering options = popup hell
- MiaD
I like it. It's like the real-time feed without having to take up a whole tab or sidebar. But I could never have it active at work - far too distracting. At home when I can keep an eye down in the corner while doing other things, it's great.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Tried it, liked it but prefer the IM / XMPP interface, that doesn't cost me CPU since I already have a client running, and also gives me more control over the level of distraction.
- Robin Barooah
Still prefer to use Twhirl for my FriendFeed updates... It has a Me tab and a Friends tab and a Everyone tab and a tab to share stuff.
- Patrick
from twhirl
I tried it and it's fun but I realized that all the real-time-ness I need I get from the real-time view in a separate window without the distraction.
- Sam Grover
A famous VC told me this week that Facebook is raising another round of funding at about the $6 billion valuation mark. I wish I could invest! Would you?
not sure I'd invest as the upside would now be relatively limited
- Shannon Clark
He told me he was considering putting in $25 million. Asked me if I would do that with my money, if I had it. I said "yes." Of course it wasn't my money, but Facebook is the success story. Far bigger than Twitter and thanks to Thursday's announcement I can see a way for them to make a ton of money.
- Robert Scoble
I'm still not convinced that they will ever make decent revenue. That being said, if they were public I'd probably pick up a few shares.
- Blake
Blake: I wonder if we thought about that when the yellow pages first came out when the telephone was very new?
- Robert Scoble
Is there information involved in that yes that isn't public? Like what the books look like (how much revenue are they generating anyway?) - What is the burn rate? etc - or just because you think they will "get there"?
- Brian Roy
Brian: he didn't give me any other information than this. I'm just going over their growth rate, they are growing a service the size of Twitter every 10 days or so.
- Robert Scoble
what is their annual profit value? how much of that money would you be likely to get back in real terms - "potential" doesn't count, I would want a real idea on how much money their business is generating before ever considering investing. (I don't have the cash so it'd be a moot point anyway)
- alphaxion
I call Facebook "the velcro of social software services." They have tons of ways to hook you onto the service. Far more sticky than Twitter.
- Robert Scoble
Invest in a company that lost $8 billion from its valuation 16 months ago? No thanks.
- Mark Frost
alphaxion: in 1991 could you have answered that question for Google? No. That's why VC investing is risky.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: 25 million seems small for Facebook, considering their last round was $100M, but of course that is only one VC. Did he tell you how many where in this round?
- Daniel Brusilovsky
Mark: every company has lost billions in values in the past 16 months. That attitude toward investing seems pretty stupid.
- Robert Scoble
Robert - totally agree with the stick factor. My question is how good is the plan to turn lots of users into actual dollars. If that plan is good (in a non-obvious way) I'd invest.
- Brian Roy
Daniel: no, he just told me what he was considering. I'm sure if it's a $6 billion valuation there will be a large pool of folks in there.
- Robert Scoble
Scoble: Good analogy. I'd like to be optimistic about it, but I just feel in my gut that the whole social networking business model still hasn't been perfected. I definitely agree that Facebook will eventually crush Twitter.
- Blake
Brian: you have to read between the lines, but now they are letting brands be full members of the social graph. I see a TON of ways to make money with that.
- Robert Scoble
Brian: here's my audio report from the Facebook announcements this week. http://friendfeed.com/e... -- in there I explain a bit about how I think Facebook will make money.
- Robert Scoble
This doesn't seem like a good idea. $6 billion?! Robert, when you say Facebook's announcement last Thursday are you referring to the new page layout for companies? How much money can that bring in?
- Nidhi Makhija
Robert - agree. But revenue is about execution. So it isn't just seeing how you might/can do it but being able to get to it effectively. That is Google's genius. I'm guessing they have the team/leadership to do it... which is why I'd invest (once I heard the plan).
- Brian Roy
Nidhi: my bet? Over next 10 years? 100's of billions. Look at Google. Facebook is facing an opportunity that's in Google's neighborhood. Of course a lot of implementation is to come and they might not get there. But I see a way that they'll make billions.
- Robert Scoble
If they monetized as well/heavily as Myspace, they would only have $1B revenue. Is he really going to get a 10x return with a $60B exit? Common or preferred?
- Andy Beard
Brian: right. And who is on executive team at Facebook? They are executing pretty damn well. Just go see Sheryl Sandberg. She was an executive at Google and knows the secrets to delivering value.
- Robert Scoble
depends on liquidation prefs, but assuming i got at least 1x preference i'd be an investor for anything south of $10B. at $6B i'd be pretty bullish; that seems like a reasonable number if you look out 3-5 years.
- dave mcclure
A $6 billion valuation would make Facebook more valuable than: Salesforce.com, Sun Microsystems, or NetApp. In fact, you could buy Sun + eTrade + Sirius Radio + TiVo and still have more than a billion in pocket change left over.
- Louis Gray
Not a chance. I'd run screaming from the building before I invested in Facebook. Sticky does not mean profitable. I remember that 1.0 adage "Get the eyeballs first and then monetize". Lots got the eyeballs - few figured out how to monetize.
- AJ Kohn
Andy: the opportunity here is a lot bigger than $1 billion. MySpace is small change compared to what Facebook is going to do.
- Robert Scoble
Andy: When I go to MySpace it tells me NOTHING about my friends' behavior when it comes to other businesses. The social graph is very powerful for businesses. Much better than what MySpace built, which is why key executives are now leaving MySpace.
- Robert Scoble
I would invest. I believe Facebook is the OS for social media and something more. They are the White Pages of the Internet. And with an upside limited only to the imagination.
- Jeff Pulver
Robert - You'd really feel safe investing in a company whose valuation isn't stable though?
- Mark Frost
@Jeff - gawd I hope not .. if that is the case then the net is truly a wasteland
- Steven Hodson
Negative. not at $6bn. We have absolutely no idea what it's worth, let's be honest. Nobody does. It's a straight gamble. I'd prefer spend the cash on buying into cloud-enabling companies like Cisco and server manufacturers, and the best placed players in the cloud ie Google and MS. Maybe...
- john conroy
"going to do" ... Digg, Facebook, Twitter ... they all say they're "going" to figure it out. Show me a profit stream (even a small one) and I'd invest to help scale it but ... until then Cuba Gooding man ... Cuba Gooding.
- AJ Kohn
Mark: that's why it's investing and not a "safe bet." VC is risky. So is buying stocks in companies.
- Robert Scoble
Does anyone know for sure - does Facebook lose money every time they sign up a new user? In other words, is the reason they're raising money because their revenues are not growing to cover the costs of their growth?
- Simon Brocklehurst
...further to my comment above: I guess what I'm really saying is that at $6bn you're talking about a blue-chip, and Facebook isn't a blue chip. It just isn't.
- john conroy
Only tonight I glanced down my 'All Friends' list in Facebook and noticed how many have no status. They have not logged in for 7 days or more. In many cases a lot more. The fascination is on the wane. My money? No chance.
- Darren
Robert: Oh I know that, I'm just speaking as someone with a very light wallet. ^_^
- Mark Frost
Darren: tell me how that is any different from this: http://twitter.com/TechCru... -- I bet your Facebook friends are more engaged with you than these Twitter followers of TechCrunch. Click on 100 followers of Techcrunch. How many have more than one Tweet? 2%? 10%? Not more.
- Robert Scoble
john: Facebook is signing up 700,000 new users PER DAY. They are growing the size of Twitter every 12 days! Blue chip? Absolutely. Just like Google was. (We had the same arguments over Google six years ago).
- Robert Scoble
Sticking the money into GOOG currently would be a better deal, or AMZN - GOOG 2008 revenues were close to $22B http://finance.yahoo.com/q... - based on similar can you see Facebook making $15B yearly revenue? - AMZN is currently worth only 6x gross profit - but then the VC neds to invest his money somewhere, and GOOG and AMZN are not an option - at the end of the day FB is relatively low risk and an easy way to do your job as noone will criticize you for it
- Andy Beard
Andy: you probably said that sticking money into Alta Vista back in 1999 was better than Google. Wrong.
- Robert Scoble
and yet - the fact they are raising money shows that we have not found a revenue model that can cope with the costs they incur - they could self-implode in 1-2 years unless they find an effective route to making break even
- Nick Halstead
Read today in Times magazine an interview with Zuckenberg stating that monetization is not a priority yet while Facebook is not getting break even. By the way, did you notice that the fan pages are changing and look now as profile pages???
- Zack Brandit
Chris: that's wrong. Everyone on my forums were talking about Google in 1999. Google didn't have a business model until 2004.
- Robert Scoble
The problem Facebook has is that people seem to get bored of it. Most people I know are using Facebook less today than they were a year ago. I never saw this pattern with Google.
- Simon Brocklehurst
Scobe: Are you saying that Twitter's model isn't working, so Facebook's will? Twitter v Facebook comparisons are fruitless.
- Darren
Darren: no, I know that Facebook has 175 million who has signed in in the past 30 days. How many does Twitter have?
- Robert Scoble
Chris: OK, I'll grant you the 2003 Google. Same points still hold. You're not feeling it? I look at how addicted my wife is to Facebook (and all her friends). This is the Google of this time.
- Robert Scoble
VC is certainly risky.. but a good VC wouldn't fritter their money away on something that wouldn't give even a little bit of ROI. Otherwise they simply wouldn't be a VC for very long. It's all well and good saying "I can see a lot of ways to make money", but visions and actual money making are 2 different things. So again, please answer the question and say how much they're currently making.
- alphaxion
"Everyone on my forums", is exactly what White said, "hardly anyone" and he is correct.
- coldbrew
I am not saying it is a bad investment, but just imagine Facebook had already IPOed last year, and had managed to figure out their revenue to bring it up to Myspace level, which would then make a $6B valuation on $1B revenue in line with GOOG and AMZN current market valuations. - that isn't necessarily a VC deal - unless they were looking to use the money for a cash purchase of Twitter at a much lower valuation than $500M
- Andy Beard
coldbrew: this whole conversation sounds exactly like the ones we had about Google in 1999-2004.
- Robert Scoble
I seem to remember a company called Netscape was all the rage once.
- Jan Simmonds
@Robert: No, Facebook is not the Google of it's time. Why? Because Google had a very clear business plan. Sell relevant ads on search results. Direct marketers (me) got it and ran with it. It took time to build but it was a clear business plan. Facebook doesn't have that. Unless of course they turn Facebook into a search portal - if they did that then the size and stickiness of the site benefits them. Outside of that, SocNet advertising doesn't seem like a viable business plan.
- AJ Kohn
I have concerns about Google if I'm honest. They too fritter their money away on investments that fizzle out to nothing (look at how many companies they've bought for massive amounts of money), they're limited by the size of the advertising market (think as to why they've been slashing their returns on adwords). Now, their positioning as a content delivery caching network is a far more promising one.
- alphaxion
Robert - "no, I know that Facebook has 175 million who has signed in in the past 30 days. How many does Twitter have? "- you're still doing it! Comparing Facebook favourably to Twitter does not mean Facebook have a good long-term model. I'm not saying they don't, but if a Twitter comparison is the best these dudes can come up with then "I'm out" as they say on Dragons Den. Using your sort of comparison, who is to say that Facebook is now Google 2003, whilst Twitter is Google 2000. Which one has more upside?
- Darren
AJ: you are totally wrong. Google didn't have a clear business model until 2004. I know the guy at Exodus who almost shut down Google because Google couldn't pay its bills.
- Robert Scoble
I think most of you people hang out mostly with technophiles; I do not.
- coldbrew
Chris: I'll never been that rich. I'll buy you a mojito at the Ritz, though!
- Robert Scoble
@Robert: Just because they couldn't pay their bills doesn't mean they didn't have a model or plan. It took time to build the momentum ... the world of search had to 'tip' - and when it did Google was well positioned *because* of their plan. I just don't see that with Facebook. What are they positioning for?
- AJ Kohn
I can say most of my 30-something friends only found FB w/in the last 6 months.
- coldbrew
Facebook fatigue has certainly been kicking in for myself over the last few months whereas as my Twittering has been increasingly steadily; it is just more "useful". That said, they certainly do appear to be functionally converging, so who knows where we'll end up...
- Kevin Bluer
Who cares about Facebook or 6 billion. What are your plans after Fast Company? Is it true they fired you?
- Bruce Curley
Kevin: I can see an argument about why you're right, too. On Gillmor Gang right now is Paul Buchheit of friendfeed and he points out that Twitter's API is far easier to develop on. That ease is turning into all sorts of interesting apps which make Twitter more useful. Well, we'll see. That's why VC is risky.
- Robert Scoble
If I were a VC I would definetly ask for a clear plan of privacy policies before investing. This might be an issue. I would also ask for some guidelines on future updates since FB seems to change its homepage very frequently, which might result in a potential failure.
- denizoktar
Bruce: I was not fired. I resigned my video show to do something else. I still am working part time for Fast Company. I have plans, but will not disclose them in public until SXSW on Monday.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert: BTW - this famous VC you mention ... are *they* investing or not?
- AJ Kohn
AJ: they didn't say, they said they were considering it, but sounded like they were going to the way they were talking.
- Robert Scoble
At this point, I would not invest in anything except gold. Do I sound like a nut? Just check out this video. Actually look at a bunch of his video over the years. Peter Schiff called it all. http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Dan Cornish
I'll point out again that while VC is an inherently risky business, it's still not a case of blindfold and a dartboard. A real VC would do at least a bit of research and see if they're likely to make a return. If not then they're not a real VC and would either be someone who can afford to lose the money as it's merely a diversion (kinda like how some people will play the lottery) or a fool.
- alphaxion
Dan: Gold and Guns sounds like a good investment strategy over next year. Me? I'd rather be in Facebook, but then I have a front-row seat.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert: Interesting. Always appreciate the information and opinion. I disagree and don't see it myself but ... I've been wrong before. Been right before too though ;)
- AJ Kohn
You all need to read this: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... Indie Facebook Developers are making over $700,000 per month. Like I said, there were billions and billions here.
- Robert Scoble
Chris: I do not have any compensation or investments coming from or going to Facebook. I was invited to a press conference on Thursday and I have a front row seat because I know many of the players involved and I read a lot of RSS feeds. :-)
- Robert Scoble
how many of the indie developers are making those figures compared to the rest? also, advertising revenues, again, are the core of it. How about revenues that don't involve advertising, as in real and repeat direct spending of the users not the whim of other companies? And of this, how much money are facebook themselves making, since this money fountain could all vanish should facebook itself fold.
- alphaxion
I bet the sum of the people advertising using Adwrods are making more than Google in total as well - the people using Paypal owned by Ebay are most certainly making bank, but for some reason Ebay isn't even worth 2x their revenue. Facebook developers making $700,000 is nice, great return, invest in the app developers if there is longevity.
- Andy Beard
@chris that's my fault.. I called it adwords in a previous comment - that's what 5 beers does to my word association skills! >.<
- alphaxion
coldbrew: sorry, I just fixed it. NO need to keep an error in my comments here.
- Robert Scoble
Was just watching you on TWiT Live, streaming to my 52" TV via my PS3. Look fwd to seeing more of your stuff on TWiT Live in the future Scoble.
- Jason Cartwright
am I the only one who seems to feel a certain air of "ponzi scheme" when your questions are met with answers of "look at these people, they're making money from it" without actually answering your question? And don't think I'm being snarky for snarks sake. I'm really trying to gain an idea of why people are yelling "buy this!" without really backing their claim up beyond "trust us".
- alphaxion
alphaxion: when you are getting 700,000 new people a day you'll figure out a business model, especially since you know so much about each of those people. People who understand media understand the very real value that Facebook is aggregating.
- Robert Scoble
again with the vague "well, we'll figure something out... just keep pumping us with money" answer. It doesn't matter how many new people you are getting onto your service if there's no tangiable sense of where the money to pay for it all is going to come from. It is very similar to youtube. They were burning through cash, plenty of people were saying "it'll make loads of money somehow" and yet google are *still* looking for ways of making it profitable. It's the kind of economics that leads to bubbles.
- alphaxion
there simply aren't enough people that sit down and ask "so, how much money are you making and how much do you project this to grow realistically". Which is the basic tenet on which all companies have been founded upon.
- alphaxion
@scoble... yes, people who understand media understand the real value that Facebook is aggregating, but not if they understand it in the OLD way. if this just turns out to be another advertising play, because they've 2 billion+ eyes, another way to sell people products they don't need, then, hell, I may as well pull the plug and turn Amish... not really, but all of the stuff I've been hearing so far doesn't make be feel confident that FB will end up being anything we haven't already seen... time will tell.
- .LAG liked that
Robert this question sparked such interesting comment you should ask more like this. FB to me is a fad unless they buy Twitter which with Twitter Search could be a new Google. Agree with Chris White MS-Facebook is a likely outcome. Google must acquire Twitter before Vodafone wise up. Keep leading the debate Rob.
- Thomas Power
What are they spending all that money on? Or is just banking money to survive the future?
- Brian Sullivan
@chris actually, I'd say google was all about weaving themselves into the sites they lead you to and the apps you use to access this info. Having dealt with administrating systems, it's scary just how many apps and system builders integrate their toolbar and desktop apps and how many sites use their services that then collect data on the visitors/users. A question I don't see asked and answered often enough is "why?"
- alphaxion
@ChrisWhite I certainly meant Adwords not Adsense - people advertise to make money (well unless they are Auto manufacturers) - I look on the Facebook App platform in many ways as an advertising platform, though the transaction that takes place between Facebook and the App developers isn't currently a financial one. Maybe things would be different if Facebook had their "FacePal" payment...
- Andy Beard
Chris: that's an interesting question. CEOs should never say never when it comes to future business decisions.
- Robert Scoble
Social networking seems like a commodity to me. Glorified address book + activity stream. Long term, why is it likely that one company will continue to command a proprietary premium on this? Do we not forget the staggering claims for these companies made doing the last bubble? Lots of similar claims by many companies in the 90s about # of user signups, stickiness, etc. If social networking platforms are so valuable, they're gonna get commodified. Wordpress isn't the only way to host RSS now is it?
- Ray Cromwell
I can feel a Metcalf's law retort coming. :) It's like Godwin, but for business model debates.
- Ray Cromwell
Chris: really? I don't agree with you. If you can survive through a depression you'll come out of it with rocket burners on. Google gained steam through the dotcom bust. Facebook is gaining steam through this downturn.
- Robert Scoble
Chris: agreed. Facebook is not going to have an IPO this year. I can assure you of that. The investors will keep them going for two more years at minimum.
- Robert Scoble
@Robert: You're thinking "aggregated rich user data" is going to be the Facebook gold mine? Advertisers and brands I chat with think it's of marginal value. Big brands already have deep databases with multiple reporting lines. Prizm data gets you 75% of the way there most of the time. Facebook might be another reporting line but it's not going to be a game changer. Search re-targeting has more value IMO.
- AJ Kohn
@AJ .. I would have to agree with you. Just think of all the data that things like those Air Miles cards collect, or credit card companies or even national brand shopping cards ... one would think that the data collected that way would be a lot more valuable than anything that FB could produce. Makes one almost think that this whole Social Media as a marketer and advertising goldmine might not turn out to be Fool's Gold
- Steven Hodson
Nope, two reasons. First, I won't invest unless I agree with the core mission of the company. Second, FB may do well in its early times after going public, but it's not at all clear to me that it will be a great company in the 5-10 year range.
- LogEx
@Steven: Exactly! Air Miles. Grocery Cards. Credit Cards. Warranty Information. Rebate Information. (You'd be amazed how many people register their stuff!) It's a bit scary what can be obtained from credit bureaus as well. Facebook is the corner, the stoop - it's where people stop to talk and shoot the breeze. Not much gets sold there. I need to connect with them when they're walking past the mall.
- AJ Kohn
Think about the data a company like Mint.com or Quicken Online collects and compare it to the data that FB has on spending patterns and interests. They know enough (but currently don't use this info) to definitively tell you that you're spending $50 a month on BlockBuster, and could reduce it to $20 a month if you change to Netflix, saving you $30.
- Ray Cromwell
How many more rounds of funding would you expect? It seems like you might get washed out by later rounds.
- Todd Hoff
Everything you hear lately makes it sound like he's had to change that point of view about $15b if he wants capital.
- Hutch Carpenter
Great discussion. Some points: the "No one can monetize this space" argument is false. As an advertiser (and a top 3 one at that), We are. And, quite well. #2--However, I wouldn't discount MySpace just yet. FaceBook is a wonderful white pages, it's possible MySpace will be a wonderful Yellow pages. We'll see. $6B is steep, but one difference this data has from the others mentioned (credit cards, gas cards, etc) is it's voluntarily provided--which is a much different data stream.
- Alan Edgett
I would, in an instant. Many Facebook apps alone have 10 times the number of users Twitter has.
- Jesse Stay
If they gave me a way to keep certain people unaware of my presence, I'd go back
- Aaman (Clone of FF)
If I had the choice, I would rather invest in LinkedIn. Facebook has a phenomenal growth there are still a lot of open questions: You talk about businesses creating pages in facebook. This is probably a good idea in the sort term but in the long term as a company you probably want more control and ownership over your community and like AOL had to open up the walled garden, Facebook will have to do it to or someone else with do it for them. In that more open world, monetizing the graph will become even harde
- Edwin Khodabakchian
Interesting. Most seasoned entrepreneurs will tell you funding isn't an ideal expansion, that multiple rounds is not a good sign. Means it isn't making money. Social networks are nothing more than message boards with different user features - and have always been very hard to monetize. New competition is coming fast into the market from places none of y'all are looking at, and we're...
- Patricia
Patricia: Google had multiple rounds. So did many other big Silicon Valley companies.
- Robert Scoble
Chris: I know all about dilution. The reason Zuckerberg is so smart is he's taken a few rounds without getting diluted much at all. Got $300 million from Microsoft and only gave up, what, 1% or so of Facebook? That's brilliant.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, yes, i know. it can be an asset. it just depends on if they can find a way to make money. google found it. let's hope facebook does too. i root for all businesses to succeed!
- Patricia
still all I am seeing is the taking of money with no idea on how it'll generate money back, which is the whole point of investment. It seems to be the whole mantra of web apps "get users, then figure out how to make money" instead of the way every other industry functions. Do you really think this is a lasting way of doing business or will the web have to mature and show they can make money with their creations before investors will part with large sums of money?
- alphaxion
when thinking about it, it is a particularly Valley way of doing business - I don't see this kind of investment internationally, they demand to see what will happen with their money and how it is likely to generate its own revenue instead of going cap in hand back to the investors.
- alphaxion
and I do agree that this way of investing does lead to some really innovative things that ordinarily wouldn't stand a chance of making it. But, it is a big concern that the sites can't stand on their own without VC's propping them up by pouring round after round into them with nothing more than "it's gonna be huge!" as the reason. It'll only ever be huge if a cogent business plan exists, otherwise the only huge thing will be the bill VC's nurse at the end of it.
- alphaxion
Interesting to note Apple could pony up $6 billion for Facebook and still have some $18 billion left over.
- Mike Reynolds
@Mike .. maybe so but if there is one thing you can say about Steve Jobs is that he is a smart businessman who doesn't like to lose money
- Steven Hodson
well i would not invest, fb has been for sometime now in a few years what ever profit could be made should have been made by now, the next big idea will kill fb forever, with the investment totally sunked in
- briandsouza
UPDATE on this: Investors in Facebook are telling friends of mine that Facebook is not raising another round. It's possible that this is an opportunity that's being offered by someone who has stock already and is looking to get out. I'll try to find out more and report back.
- Robert Scoble
Robert - whoa, "someone ... looking to get out." wow. yes, more info please. What is their rationale?
- Susan Beebe
I wouldn't. I would rather invest in something simpler like twitter or friendfeed.
- Siddharth Mitra
Interesting that the round is at $6 Billion. I heard that Facebook are supposedly only accepting external investors providing they are investing at the valuation of Microsofts investment.
- Nicholas James
I think I'm more or less alone in liking the new Google favicon. Yet I hate the new Pepsi logo (but of course, I hate Pepsi, being an Atlantan). There's something about the amorphous asymmetry that annoys me (yes, I know the Google logo is asymmetric as well, but it seems ok somehow).
- Joel Webber
I could learn to like the Google favicon, though the 'vibration' caused by putting bright green and red together, and the altogether Christmasy feel of the right side are hard to ignore.
- Kevin Fox
I also like the new favicon (certainly far more than the lowercase blue-g version, at least). I think the middle image above actually looks more like a piece of the old Pepsi logo than the new one.
- Laurence Gonsalves
Great link between the images. Red and green, never thought of it but I made some observation, there's two sections of blue, which is a bit weird. And a lot of green compared to the yellow and red, probably to fit with those curves. (the bottom left corner of the upper part of the g)
- ElijahBailey-Zu of FF <0,
I didn't like the original 'new favicon', but the current new one is so bad I finally started using the 'classic Google favicon' userscript.
- Andrew C
It would start by taking the MSN butterfly logo and swapping the position of the green and yellow bits...
- Andrew C
im more annoyed by the change (for no good reason?) than the design. i was so used to the old favicon that for a long time after they changed to the blue one, it took me a few seconds longer every time i was going back to the google results tab in the browser, because i kept looking for the tab with the old favicon every time.
- Lasse Johnsen
I'm of the opinion that good design is polarizing. It provokes conversation and interest. Take Nintendo's "Wii" for example. Almost everyone hated the name when they announced it, but now I can't imagine it being called anything else (and it certainly hasn't hurt sales).
- Jonathan Terleski
I don't think polarizing implies good design nor vice-versa.
- Andrew C
I actually kinda like the new Google favicon. At least more than the blue lowercase one. And maybe rather than 'like' I should say 'am used to,' since that was the extent of my feelings towards the initial Google favicon, too. I didn't particularly like it. I was just used to it, cuz it was the capital G. That's it.
- Chieze Okoye
Also, I don't think that design is good if and only if it's polarizing. I don't even know that I think that there is a causal relationship in either direction. I could get behind the idea that there is a correlation, but I've seen plenty of designs that are universally thought of as great (no polarization needed).
- Chieze Okoye
Thanks William, you have done us an immense service by eloquently alluding to our business model for www.famebook.com.
