RT @louisgray: How I see it: Google and Apple make news with products and features. Facebook makes news with policy changes. Twitter makes news with bugs.
I'm demoing friendfeed to a bunch of people at Kinnernet. All sorts of tech industry leaders. Say hi. Oh, Jimmy Wales says he'll join friendfeed here. Watch the video we recorded here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel... interesting conversation.
Well, for one thing it is a lot easier to engage in a conversation on FriendFeed and I especially like the idea that you can create a conversation based on any entry or content type posted to FriendFeed. Twitter is touted as more popular but the fact remains it isn't always that easy to track a conversation and the content types you can have a conversation about are severely limited to text and perhaps an image via the likes of TwitPic.
- Paul Jacobson
Hi folks! People from all over the world are having fun, conversation and a good time on FriendFeed. Like me. From The Netherlands.
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
Yo Charbax, have you tried FF on Archos 5 yet?
- Nir Ben Yona
With clever filters, friendfeed real-time could support thousands of people chatting about the same topics at the same time, and filter it to have a meaningfull real-time overview on all topics and all people
- Charbax
@Charbax: I like that: "friendfeed is like ICQ for 21st century" ...that's a good start, but it's more than that and has more potential. just one opinion, of course. ;-)
- .LAG liked that
Yup it works fine on Archos, also the realtime ajax stuff
- Charbax
...please, guys, no "topless" memes... .LOLz
- .LAG liked that
FYI: Kinnernet conference is named after Lake Kinneret in north Israel, where Jesus is claimed to be walking on water.
- Nir Ben Yona
I have to scroll up and click comment to add a message here. I think friendfeed should have the post message box stay there at the bottom by default
- Charbax
friendfeed should perhaps provide chat embed type of feature so this friendfeed "chat" can replace the IRC thing on http://www.ustream.tv/channel...
- Charbax
Don't think $100 laptops can be made out of quality materials.
- Nir Ben Yona
@nir, I don't think netbooks scream quality either
- mjc
Michael: you should have seen my Asus N10 ;) but seriously, there's a big difference between reasonable stuff and crap. Arrington realized that with his tablet device.
- Nir Ben Yona
The major cost of the Android laptop is the screen. The rest is electronic peanuts
- Charbax
@Nir, I just don't see 1024x600 as usable for a non-mobile OS. also failure rates for netbooks are still pretty much unknown
- mjc
Michael: Very usable, besides video editing I literally do everything with this kind of resolution and have no probs. BTW, the N10 community has found a way to upgrade this resolution to 1024 X 768, but it really doesn't matter (except when it comes to games support).
- Nir Ben Yona
@Nir, what about the huge number of crappy windows apps and some Linux ones that assume you have at 768 or more vertical lines? there is a lot of that...
- mjc
Michael: I totally agree about the Linux issue, way too annoying. On the other hand, the number of windows apps that support X600 resolution is increasing and more adjustable than before, still a lot to improve though.
- Nir Ben Yona
The only thing about Israelis is that once they figure out friendfeed, Robert, they'll show you how to do it better.

- Louis Gray
Higlet, this was the right post in which to do it. :)
- Louis Gray
Oh lord. Now you've gone and done it. You've created a black hole in the fabric of the universe and we will all be sucked into an alternate reality. Thankfully we won't notice, because we will still see a reality.
- Jack&Cleo
Pffft. Are you trying to demonstrate that not all browsers are created equal? Not only do I not use FF for FF (you heard) the fact that I did just to make sure highlights a very important point. I discuss that more here: http://beta.friendfeed.com/worldof...

People Can & Will Surprise You! Someone who 'got it' sent me a link to a Britian's Got Talent vid that made me tear up: http://www.youtube.com/watch...
I love these things. Worth watching.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, agreed. I wish the iphone had the ability to send a link to a youtube video quickly so this could be sent to my daughters today
- LPH™ and his dog P™
I wish they tuned down the audience a bit... Could barely hear her at times
- Mark Philpot
this lady certainly has a voice! good for her i say for being brave. :)
- Tatty Gibson
OMG, I'm in tears here. That was lovely and wow that song with all that. Had to favorite it. </sentimental wimp>
- Anika
Is good to see what nature can do. Incredible voice!
- Rafael
That's a magnificent clip, I wish America's Got Talent was so entertaining and surprising.
- Jonathan Coffman
i watched this last night, love her! Her voice is a true gift.
- Laura Zickus
Thanks for sharing that - perfect for this time of year
- Jesse Stay
She's this year's Paul Potts. Great voices, the pair of them.
- Mark H
That was just amazing. And the perfect song for both her situation and to start the waterworks. Now i have to follow the show and see if she wins.
- Kevin Fox
While I absolutely detest these shows, I must say, this woman got to me.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Oh, Duh. Got it, Kevin. This reminds me of the British man who sang opera. It was unbelievable. I think our American shows shoudn't limit the age. I'd love to see what some of the older folks here can do.
- Dawn
Dawn, America's got talent doesn't limit age either
- Jesse Stay
Great! I was thinking of American Idol. Never seen America's Got Talent.
- Dawn
"so you think you can dance" limits at 30 years or so. Such a shame.
- Kevin Fox
"So that's just one side of me!" Hahaha. So nice, she's courageous and willing, good game! So modest to have her walk away after her performance, I'm almost crying.
- Zu from AOD
Wow. I usually avoid all of these types of shows. But that was very cool!
- Louis Gray
As LG said, it's my first view of that. Damn talents' shows, they got me.
- Zu from AOD
Gosh, I think I've watched this video like 50 times already.
- Nir Ben Yona
Just goes to show how synical we all are, and how fast we are to judge people.
- Steve Mactaggart
from twhirl
Not bad! I still prefer this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch... - That said, it was a surprisingly good performance. Not as much as Paul Potts, who was entirely horripilative and transcendent.
- david beckwith
This was a surprise--and lovely, thx
- susan mernit
Awesome performance. I've never seen the look of pleasant surprise on Simon's face before. You could tell that even he enjoyed it. He still needs to get a better haircut though.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
Britain may have talent, but that's more than I can say for Simon Cowell. The man is the Antichrist, as far as i'm concerned.
- Iain Baker
He was a tamed little kitteh for 6 minutes during that performance though.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
Don't know enough about Cowell to make a value judgement on the man. Sometimes (and I don't know if this is the case with Cowell) the a-hole attitude is a public front. It's possibly the case with Gordon Ramsey, and it certainly is with Ann Robinson - I've been to a recording of 'The Weakest Link' at Pinewood Studios, and she switches 'bitch mode' on and off along with the cameras.
- Ian May
Wow! Brings back memories when I first saw paul potts...
- Jorg Jansen
Seriously? This reeks of scripted viral. The show caught (online) fire in '07 with the Paul Potts audition...arguably the hottest shared video of the year. When the show returned last year, there wasn't an act even minutely close to the WOM impact Potts had generated the privious year. Clearly the BGT online buzz strategy for '09... Potts 2.0. #fail
- Zach Lytwyn
ahh, the power of the edit. great job of making her look like a 'cat lady' for the first several minutes. all the more powerful when we find out she's not totally daft.
- MikeAmundsen
That is one courageuos woman with an amazing voice. Goosebumps all over.
- Jochen Lillich
I just started a company, so I'm thinking big — will be good to see you at SXSW: last time I saw you was at SXSW 2005 and the time before that was at a conference you were running and I was speaking at in New Orleans in 2001 so it must be a 4-year thing :-)
- James Tauber
Can't help but recall this quote "Go Big or Go Home!"
- JR
We're thinking BIG here in Aquila TV in Birmingham, England. We're also all about diversifying and collaborative work, because we know that this is where our industry is heading. I'm @melkins on Twitter and will be in Texas next week for SXSW.
- Mars Elkins
Even the thoughts are big in Texas. ;) How about: our work to accelerate the demise of the office building and the rise of the sentient city: http://bit.ly/ehUs
- Sean Savage
@respres & @billlubin have created Social Media Marketing Institute. I think that's got potential for strong growth as a training entity. Might be worth chatting with them. As to tech start-ups, @doverbey with @roost is worth watching. (www.roost.com)

Just chiming in to echo the Uservoice sentiments already expressed here. Go Santa Cruz!

My son-in-law, Saul Griffith, is making the case that the entire economy needs to be turned towards sustainable energy. That's big think.... See http://blog.longnow.org/2009...

Hi Robert, @TugglMatt here, founder of Tuggl.com (very beta!). Our goal is to create a competitive atmosphere around corporate responsibility, rewarding local businesses that are doing good by their customers and their community. By quantifying social responsibility and sending more customers to those businesses doing it the best, we can prove that doing good is good for business. Would love to tell you more about our venture and how we plan on changing local commerce and building better communities.
- Matt Buchanan
Have you ever interviewed Lee and Sachi LeFever of CommonCraft.com? They're big (explanatory) thinkers.
- Darren Barefoot
I hope you get a chance to see what we're up to at Minggl these days, I think you'd agree we are thinking big.
- Marcus Irven
These are all great ideas. We'll have many of them on the SXSW show on Ustream: http://www.ustream.tv/sxsw -- this is going to be a lot of fun, the channel is being done by some very creative people/musicians (Peter Himmelman, for instance) and you'll hear more about it later in the week.
- Robert Scoble
I'm developing a semantic social infrastructure for OpenID that interlocks the relationship graph and activity graph. Users control social identity and privacy for every situation, all while building and managing digital legacy. Our system turns every person, group, network and event into a portable domain that is semantically linked to all associated domains and semantic properties. Result: A social web that reflects our real lives. Would be happy to demo.
- Paul Daigle
Robert - Thanks for tweeting about UStream Studios - You know I'm excited and you know why. Look forward to seeing you there and watching the justSignal Tracker (right side of link Robert put up) fly.
- Brian Roy
Hi Tim. I agree with you about Saul. If you want to see him and many other really big thinkers speak, take a look at a conferece site I launched last night at http://i2i.xprize.org this is exactly what you are looking for Robert I'll bring you program at sxsw
- Mark Krynsky
Does thinking about big (tall) beers count? If so, I'm a 30-minute video for ya - 2 minutes of best beers talk and just 28 minutes for you and Rocky to provide a bit of filler :)
- Patrick Jordan
You should check out @thepoint if you haven't yet. The founder and the CTO were there last year and are attending again.
- Tim Letscher
I'm looking for people who are thinking big about work spaces, what will replace the cubicle, what the office environment will look like in a decade, how we'll be working and how that will impact offices (if we'll even have them). Help is appreciated.
- Chris Stevenson
I think I'm more or less alone in liking the new Google favicon. Yet I hate the new Pepsi logo (but of course, I hate Pepsi, being an Atlantan). There's something about the amorphous asymmetry that annoys me (yes, I know the Google logo is asymmetric as well, but it seems ok somehow).
- Joel Webber
I could learn to like the Google favicon, though the 'vibration' caused by putting bright green and red together, and the altogether Christmasy feel of the right side are hard to ignore.
- Kevin Fox
I also like the new favicon (certainly far more than the lowercase blue-g version, at least). I think the middle image above actually looks more like a piece of the old Pepsi logo than the new one.
- Laurence Gonsalves
Great link between the images. Red and green, never thought of it but I made some observation, there's two sections of blue, which is a bit weird. And a lot of green compared to the yellow and red, probably to fit with those curves. (the bottom left corner of the upper part of the g)
- Zu from AOD
I didn't like the original 'new favicon', but the current new one is so bad I finally started using the 'classic Google favicon' userscript.
- Andrew C (✓)
It would start by taking the MSN butterfly logo and swapping the position of the green and yellow bits...
- Andrew C (✓)
im more annoyed by the change (for no good reason?) than the design. i was so used to the old favicon that for a long time after they changed to the blue one, it took me a few seconds longer every time i was going back to the google results tab in the browser, because i kept looking for the tab with the old favicon every time.
- Lasse Johnsen
I don't think polarizing implies good design nor vice-versa.
- Andrew C (✓)
I actually kinda like the new Google favicon. At least more than the blue lowercase one. And maybe rather than 'like' I should say 'am used to,' since that was the extent of my feelings towards the initial Google favicon, too. I didn't particularly like it. I was just used to it, cuz it was the capital G. That's it.
- Chieze Okoye
Also, I don't think that design is good if and only if it's polarizing. I don't even know that I think that there is a causal relationship in either direction. I could get behind the idea that there is a correlation, but I've seen plenty of designs that are universally thought of as great (no polarization needed).
- Chieze Okoye
