Mixpod: Create a Music Playlist!

Just as people mentioned Playlist.com may be on the way out due to having no developer team left around the office [unconfirmed, overheard at a conference type of thing] and imeem.com got sold to Myspace [somewhat confirmed], I just stumbled into another re-implementation of the ‘social playlist’ idea. This seems reasonably well-built, though typically uninspiring and copies Playlist.com pretty closely (which in turn copied imeem.com for most of its existence).

Naturally, all the content comes from your neighborly, local YouTube API without any sight of the video player by default.  You can access the video by clicking a subtle piece of text labeled “video” above the play button.

I am late to the party: the site appears to have been launched in late 2008 [Alexa src], or maybe even in April 2008 [earliest blog post] and experienced serious growth starting February 2009 [Alexa src], likely because MyFlashFetish, a parent site, started heavily featuring Mixpod on their front page.  There are probably other marketing efforts this team engaged in, as it is difficult to determine the full effect or size of MFF [Compete data].

The site appears to be run by users #10 and #11, Bill and Katalyst, respectively.  They seem to be the default contacts you get when you sign up for the service.  If the # of their friends is to be believed, the service may have over 4.7 million registered accounts, though likely more.

Well, that was a fun find.  Teenage playlisters fear not, you are safe!  Yawn.

Where were these guys during Music Hack Day? :P
@MusicBizGuy yeah, I waited too long to book Boltbus and thought to try Greyhound as per pretty bus ad on Boltbus site. (GH operates both)
@parkan boltbus was full, amtrak too expensive for the slow type of rt (tho it is also debatable if Acela is worth it), and an ad seduced me
Total bait and switch on this greyhound. Ad had fancy new bus, I am in an old busted bus. New buses not running on this spec. rt, evidently
Goodbye Boston! Music Hackday here was the best music tech event I've been to, more on this later
Phil from @songkick is about to demo topsecret hype machine API, after @paul_irish's awesome HTML5 audio annotation demo
