The ColecoVision was released with an initial catalog of 12 titles, with 10 additional titles on the way for 1982. Gnomedex Schomedex - Kyle Lacy
Yeah doing a lot of hiding of all the posts here from my brother and my sister in law, both of whom I love dearly. I think I just don't get conferences in general, but I really have no idea what Gnomedex is really about. I know it's loosely about tech, but beyond that it's inscrutable to me. Then again it's not about computer security, home theater or gaming, which is probably why I have little interest in it. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
I with you. It's the Rejaw of tech conferences. - Mark Trapp
Alex: it's a celebration of geekiness. The talks yesterday were really awesome. You'll probably like what I do next week at the IFA conference (a huge consumer electronics show in Berlin). - Robert Scoble
I'll be honest. I went to gnomedex.com to watch. lol. This woman need to pipe it. - Kyle Lacy
Okay. Honestly. Who cares? Do you really have conferences about the definition of the word blog? - Kyle Lacy
I would blog about PAX while I am there next week, but I will be experiencing expo awesomeness in its purest form and so sadly will not be able to. - J. Phil
Hehe, Kyle...twenty years from now people will still be asking "what's a blog?" - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
Exactly.. I'm just confused about all of this. - Kyle Lacy
Alex, I never heard of Gnomedex, and I thought I was born a geek. I guess this is proof that I'm not. Or perhaps I'm a mutant geek? :) - imabonehead
Alex, "I remember my grandpa said something about blogs.." - Pete Delucchi
I don't even know what Gnomedex is. Isn't GNome still a desktop environment for LInux? I so confuzed... - Rahsheen(isSoAwesome)
Kyle: Gnomedex has always had a lot of bloggers/influentials. So, discussing blogging makes sense. - Robert Scoble
Robert: I understand the concept of talking about blogging and discussing strategy. I'm just confused on the point of arguing over the use of the word "blog". - Kyle Lacy
Gnomedex is Chris Pirillo's personal tech/geek conference. This is the 8th year he's held it. Hopefully Lindsay and I will get to go next year. - Tad - just Tad
I watched Beth Kanter's talk last night and it was pretty cool. Then I went ahead and watched the icanhascheezburger guy too, which was mildly amusing, - Laura Norvig
Chris has said in the past that the opinions of people who attend Gnomedex hold "infinitely more weight" than the people who don't attend Gnomedex, so doubtful you -- or anybody else in this thread that's not there -- will be motivating him to change anything, Alex, see: http://chris.pirillo.com/2007/... - TDavid
It's pretty telling of a person that the only way they'll consider a position is if you pay them 600 dollars. - Mark Trapp
@Tdavid I find it completely rediculous that Chris feels that way. - Kyle Lacy
@MarkTrapp damn straight - Kyle Lacy
I'm not trying to get Chris Pirillo to change Gnomedex. I'm just saying that going to a conference for the sole purpose of celebrating my nerdiness doesn't appeal to me at all. Oh and J. Phil, I'll be at PAX next weekend too. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
@Alex - then what is the point of your comment? To say it bores you and wondering if anybody else is bored? That's it? Heck, I'm bored by a thousand different conferences out there. It doesn't mean that it's not interesting to the people who are attending (or others without the $$$ to attend). As for PAX, will be there too and will be blogging about it :) - TDavid
To start a conversation with other people who have no interest in Gnomedex...and to complain about all the posts in Friendfeed on it that I've had to hide so far :) - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
I also would like to voice an opinion over Chris wearing a backpack... Somebody needs to buy him a man bag. - Kyle Lacy
Alex are you saying you are bored using social media for a good cause? because we raised $3600 to send a young Cambodian woman to college thru. Beth Kanter's talk yesterday. Or are you saying you are bored with impacts of search on privacy because Danny Sullivan was able to call Random attendees on stage and pull bunch of info. on them from the web. or are you saying you are bored with LOLCATS? Or taking good tips on how to take awesome pictures? I am not sure if this is just a case of sour grapes bro. - Maryam Scoble
+1 Maryam :) - Mona N.
I'm not a blogger, but I thoroughly enjoy getting together with others who have like-minded interests, at the very least for the motivation. It looks like a heck of a lot of fun to me, but then I'm a nerd. - Jody C
Another perspective from a Gnomedex attendee: "Last year was my first Gnomedex and I was floored by the quality of people, speakers and attendees. I can say with no hesitation that this year is the best Gnomedex so far, by far." source: http://blog.davemadethat.com/2... - TDavid
But as participators in Social Media, it's interesting to hear about what the speakers are talking about. Is open ID irrelevant to the both of you, Alex and Kyle? - Mona N.
Pretty much, Mona :) - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
And Mark and Kyle: $600 is nothing, compared to a lot of blogging conferences out there, have you guys ever held a conference? Planned an event? :) - Mona N.
I despise it with a passion... Maybe even more than I despise the Blogger comment feature. - Kyle Lacy
Alex and myself do not need OpenID.. we float through websites. - Kyle Lacy
Alex: Don't you want to know more about the services you're utilizing? Or do you just go in blindsided? - Mona N.
Maryam- No, I'm bored of all the contextless twitter posts about how great everything is...and I'm not the type of person who will probably ever watch a video of a conference. - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
Mona- I have my own special way of learning about things...and it usually doesn't involve going to conferences. :) - AlexScoble(Robert'sBro)
-1 Mona. I wasn't talking about the irrelevance of a blogging conference in general. I was talking about a 10 mins section of gnomedex when they were arguing over the use of the word "blog". I thought it was entertaining. -2 Mona. :) - Kyle Lacy
Honestly, I see bits and pieces flying around about Gnomedex, but I haven't really seen anything Official. Like "Here is the Gnomedex homepage" and " Here is a vid of a discussion about panties" or "TUne in live http://here.com to catch a presentation about bleh" - Rahsheen(isSoAwesome)
You can find out about all those technologies without paying 600 dollars to Chris Pirillo. People are talking about those things every single day. The idea that there are only 230 people in the whole world are going to know about technologies that affect the world by paying 600 dollars and attending some conference is inane. Conferences are great: you get to meet and network with people. But the only person you're convincing that it's going to change the world or make the people who pay 600 dollars to attend into "thought leaders" are the people who paid the money to attend. To the rest of the world, it's just another tech conference. - Mark Trapp
Kyle: Fair enough LOL I have minus points. @Alex: Well I think it's awesome Chris is streaming it live, for the people who couldn't be there. To each their own :) @Rah: live.pirillo.com, dude - Mona N.
Mona I agree with that. I think it is awesome we can watch it live. Absolutely! +2 Mona - Kyle Lacy
Mark: you don't need to pay Chris Pirillo anything to learn about what is going on on stage. The entire conference is being streamed live on Ustream. - Robert Scoble
This single moment, seen here on this video, is the reason why Im sad I wasnt there (hard to not appreciate the spirit behind this): http://www.drewolanoff.com/pos... - Andrew Baron
Look guys, nothing against gnomedex, but I'm personally tired of blogging about blogging (or tweeting about twitter or using ff to talk about ff). Just frelling do something cool (tech related or otherwise) and talk about it.We need more content and less comments (I apologize for the irony of this comment). - Sam Levine
What I really want to know is if the attendees are getting cool swag. I'm a swagaholic. Can I haz cuil foam logo [not to be confused with LEGO] maskots and blinkin' pinz, pleez? - MiniMage
The last two sessions have had some really great technologists from the University of Washington. Onscreen now is a vocal joystick. Alex, you might like to see this for its impact on games. - Robert Scoble
Meh. I thought Gnomedex was a directory for gnomes. I was unsure of what gnomes might be, possibly troll-killers. Fail. - WorldofHiglet
What's gnomedex? ;) - Peter Simard
I like Chris, but I agree, and I live in Seattle. - Ryan
It's difficult to be all things to all people at all price points. ;) Duncan Riley's post sums it up quite nicely, I believe - he groks the energy, the concept of shared experiences, etc. - http://www.inquisitr.com/2618/... - can't "get that" online, really. That, and it's too bad nobody here was interested (including locals), because I would have done just about anything (before reading entries in this thread) for you to join us. ;) No joke... - l0ckergn0me

The judging is so inherently subjective that the designers have to at least understand the general basis for sending someone home. Without that, it seems capricious, unfair & random. This year it seems like everyone going home thinks they didn't deserve it, more so than in other seasons. - Liz
I agree. Though it was worth him hanging around an extra week just to watch him sulk as the judges kicked his puppy (which was wearing a cocktail dress). Wow, that's a pretty sobering wake-up call. - .LAGizmoto
Gen X is broke too. The only people with money are the Boomers. - Cyndy
Problem is most X & Y'rs are relying on salary only for their income. Incomes have been stagnant for almost a decade while the cost of living has gone up dramatically. There are also more things to spend money on such as internet access, cell phones, satellite/cable TV that just did not used to exist. With all of the entrepreneurial energy of the X & Y generations, I see few using that ingenuity to create vehicles that generate positive cash flow at a personal level. Many work for a start up for free expecting the big payoff at the end. A rather risky proposition considering only 1 in 10 or less businesses actually succeed. - Jeff P. Henderson
@jeff: great points...i think they all go back to the main thrust of the article: young adults today are not very 'financially literate.' all of the things you bring up describe people who basically have no plan for how to deal with money. that's the problem. - .LAGizmoto
@LAG, Yes and what's even worse is when all of these X & Yr's get to the end of their carriers and are ready to retire. What will they live on without vehicles that provide them with passive income, that they should have been building up over the past 40+ years? All they will have to rely on is their 401k's (Which many are not putting enough $ into) and Social Security if it even exists. The bottom line is that most will end up retiring in poverty or close too it. Many will still be in dept on their primary residence as well as carrying significant revolving debt. This is very scary!! - Jeff P. Henderson
