what do you like better about feedly then friendfeed or others? just curious. I'm trying to cut back, not add more tools, great s they might be. i'm exploding!
- washwords
Can I like this 3x. Thanks for a GREAT recommendation, Bwana. My new fave Firefox extension.
- Leo Laporte
Wow, even the screensaver function is cool...I might be leaning to feedly and away from greader...
- Anthony Farrior
Revisited based on a few 'endorsements' here on FF. Wow. Easy, fast, just cool.
- Charlie Anzman
I definitely need to spend more time with it, because on first impression, it's just too much information in one place.
- cecily
What are the implications of "no thanks"? Same as "Mark as read"?
- Andrew Smith
@cecily if you get a chance, go to the feedly dashboard (through dashboard link at the top right of the screen) and click on the star next to the sources you like the most and see if the what's new page looks any better. The other option is to click on the "cover" icon on the top left on the nav bar and see if that view is more diggestable. If you have specific ideas on how to make the interface more appealing let us know!
- Edwin Khodabakchian
@andrew no thanks = mark the article as read + let the feedly recommendation engine know that you did not like this recommendation. This metadata is then used with other criteria to unfluence future recommendations.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
@Bwana Where is Feedly video, I love Bwana TV more than Scobleizer TV : ))
- Erhan Erdogan
Edwin, one main suggestion - use plain language. Why call it "no thanks" when "mark item as read" is more intuitive (and doesn't require guessing)?
- cecily
Hmm... have speed dial already loaded upon feedly install and cannot find feedly anywhere
- Michael W. May
from twhirl
I installed and uninstalled all in 1 minute.
- Aaron Myers
Erhan, thanks :) I need to learn how to utilize it properly before I screencast it...it's coming soon though, I love this thing
- Bwana ☠
I tried it but wasn't that impressed with it.
- BCK
Looks promising, but I'm always suspicious of extensions that don't come from Mozilla addons site...
- João Almeida
What do you guys say to the folks who say Feedly crapped all over their Google Reader (adding feeds to it)?
- David Risley
It's in this thread David: http://friendfeed.com/e... We asked for a bigger warning since the one there is easily missed, the Feedly guys chime in as to why they did it that way. It doesn't "crap" all over your feed, it does create new folders, but they are easily removed. They are working on an undo procedure as well.
- Bwana ☠
iGoogle has been my home page for well over a year and what I have found is that via widgets its generally there for me to either click on gmail or to go into google reader - the other widgets are generally worth an odd glance but thats about it - I've put feedly as my home page and will see how this works out - but first impressions is a clean easy to use interface even if you have a few hundred feeds to juggle..
- Jican
Feedly is awesome: I had a few hiccups after installation, but I re-installed, and it has been a real help in 2 ways: 1) motivated me to clean up my feeds and sort them into a major category 2)motivates me daily to actually skim through and read the content that is closest to my current interests. well done!
- Terri MacMillan
Not dissing Feedly, but didn't experience anything that made me want to give up Google Reader when I tried Feedly a few months ago. Anyone care to explain why I should try again?
- Chris Stevenson
I don't work for them, so I don't see a reason to convince you. Some people like it, some don't.
- Fleagle
Hi Chris: feedly tries to provide a magazine like summary of your google reader. Some users only care about productivity and find the magazine like interface a step backward. Some users like it and use it in concert with their google reader. Some people prefer using the magazine like interface only.
- Edwin Khodabakchian
I just wanted to let him know that there is someplace he could go without seeing me. Thinking of it I am not on Yahoo or AOL much either.
- Robert Scoble
You're not on Classmates.com, are you?
- Robyn Miller
I show up on Plurk once a year to say hi and to collect karma. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I'm pretty sure he isn't on HeavyAsHell.com yet either. :D
- MarkCarras
You should try MySpace, Robert, I'm sure you'd love it ;-)
- Phil Jeudy
I'm pretty sure I haven't seen you on Hello Kitty Online, either. Wait, I mean—never mind.
- Mark Trapp
Robert, the people who want lots of followers follow anyone, hoping the following will be returned. For most people, following fewer people leads to fewer follows, not more.
- Michael Krigsman
I'm friends with a guy who sings in a death metal band and he loves Hello Kitty. Creepy eh? :D Nice guy though.
- MarkCarras
Yes, but what is the quality of those followers? it's all very low quality people who will never respond or converse with you.
- MarkCarras
I don't want the most followers. I want to have conversations with smart people. Which is why I am here and why I follow you.
- Robert Scoble
LOL! Best line I've read all day, Scoble. Well done, sir.
- Steven Perez
I haven't seen you on LinkedIn. If you haven't checked it out recently, you may want to revisit it. Conversations are now supported within LinkedIn groups, and they also have their "Answers" feature. In my case, LinkedIn is more relevant to my job (but FriendFeed is more relevant to my interests).

One thing about LinkedIn - it does have its LIONs who will link to just about anybody. I do link to a few people with more than 500 followers (Chris Brogan being one of them), but try to do this judiciously.

You're missing out on the recent home.live.com launch. Nice aggregation features across other SNs with IM integration. You should check it out.
- Randy Holloway
You used to be a big Live.com fan - back when you worked at Channel 9. Have you given up on Live? ;-)
- Lorin Olsen
I am still checking it out but it hasn't done anything to get me super excited.
- Robert Scoble
I did literally laugh out loud at this.
- Matt Cutts
I blocked Dave Winer to save him the pain of being enslaved by me. Geesssshhhh.
- Robert Scoble
Winer was being a whiner tonight. I like the guy but he was talkin' more smack than normal.
- MarkCarras
More smack than normal? Have you been following Winer long? :)
- Bwana ☠
Ha! Good point. When it flows that heavy how does one tell that it is less or more? :D
- MarkCarras
Maybe Dave should start his own Twitter clone. Then he and the Gillmor Gang can sit all night and discuss why the letter W looks like a M on it's back

:D love to write it that way, but because of the spell check I tended recently to reduce on the number of syllables. hahahaha is usually my level of laugh for the best outta those and hehehe in a more subtle way.

I agree with most of those, except lol is usually between hah and haha and LOL is usually between haha and hahaha. And rofl is around hahaha and ROFL is usually around hahahaha.. but you gotta remember the original... hehe, which is around hah, but in more of a serious laugh. :D

Keep Your Friends Organized: FriendFeed Launches Beta of New Interface [Frderic Lardinois, Read Write Web - 8/25/08] - http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive...
(1) Group your friends into different lists. Adding friends to these lists is done through a nifty text interface that auto-completes names as you type them. Of course, if you can't remember the names, you can also add friends through the subscription sub-menu (see screenshot).
- Mitchell Tsai
(2) See the actual home feeds of other users. This is a great way of discovering new people to follow.
- Mitchell Tsai
(3) Posting directly to FriendFeed has now become a bit easier and the old "Share Something" button has been replaced with a text box at the top of the page (though interestingly, as you search, this box turns into a search box, which is a bit confusing).
- Mitchell Tsai
(4) One nice new feature is that you can now directly upload pictures to FriendFeed. While we really like universal uploaders like Pixelpipe here, sometimes you might just want to send a picture to FriendFeed. This has been possible every since FriendFeed acquired mail2ff.com, but this new posting UI makes it quite a bit easier.
- Mitchell Tsai
(wanted) FriendFeed rooms you subscribe to are always visible, but searching for interesting rooms is still not possible.

A zoning law and blueprint flub were the inspiration for this apartment complex. Dutch housing regulations require apartment construction to provide a certain amount of daylight to their tenants–but MVRDV architects forgot to plan for that. Their solution? To hang thirteen of the 100 units off the north facade of the block. The ingenious design saves ground floor space and allows enough sunlight to enter the east or west facade.

If you look at the images and ignore the arms paying attention to the body though Phelps (except for his arms) is actually in front. His arms are moving though and the other swimmers arms are just pointed forward gliding. It would be interesting to see high speed footage of the next few frames -- the ones between this and the touch (if they exist)
- Brian Sullivan
great photo finish.. i remember that he is the left one so fantastic finish for him :)
- Alp Çoker
is there a hi-res super-slow-motion video of this scene?
- Goktug Gedik
Seems like the key information is between slides 4/8 and 5/8, rendering this frame-by-frame slightly silly. I'm also gonna quibble over the size of SI.com's top banner, forcing me to scroll down with each click. What I do like however is Phelps' arm-speed and rate of approach, awesome final push.
- Marko Bon
Unbelivable. And thanks for that gif paisano.
- Roberto Bonini
Brian, good point. I have seen the photos a few times now and didn't notice how far ahead Phelps was until you pointed out to look at their bodies. I was always focused on their hands.
- Mike Boudreaux

this is a case where traditional photo journalism would be improved with more tech.... the GIF animation is terrific; just wish it could have been done by the folks with access to the super hi-speed images. thx paisano! (& I am Italian ;)
- dave mcclure
Agree Dave. Wondered why they didn't create a high-quality animated gif themselves. It's easy to do and take no time at all. Heck, they could even make it more fun like allow us to zoom in and around the swimmers to view it from different angles...top, side then underneath. heh

Since there are over 24 frames per second even in ordinary video film, and far more than that in high motion film, we certainly could have used a few more images. Although, this is impressive and his last half stroke effort, amazing.
- iSteeve
24 fps gives a picture every .04 seconds or so -- the margin of victory was .001 wasn't it? So we may actually be seing the 24 fps frames here. I am not sure about high speed cameras -- what is the fps for them -- were they actually active and is footage available?
- Brian Sullivan
I used Tivo to slow this down on Saturday and was amazed at how close the finish was. What's even more amazing to me is how little NBC used the underwater cameras they had installed. I would have liked to have seen more footage from below the water - the little that they did use really illustrated the differences in technique used.

I was curious about what settings people are using to upload to Flickr. What quality do you export your RAW files to? I've been experimenting with different sizes, but I find that Flickr's compression can sometimes make it look like I hardly adjusted any saturation/contrast.
In LR 2.0 I export 100% JPEG at 800 px long and they look just fine to me.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
100% JPG, sRGB, 800px with Lightroom (now 2.0). I think Flickr messes around a little with sharpness when it generates thumbnails, but that's the only thing I've ever noticed. Have you turned on color profile support for Firefox 3? That can make a difference as well if they don't look right on the web.
- Eric P
LR2, sRGB, 100% JPEG, No resize at all. I use Flickr as some kind of my favourite photo's backup. I also enabled color profile support in FF3.
- Éric Senterre
LR2: sRGB, JPG quality "8", resize to longest size at 1024px.
- Aaron B. Hockley
Just wanted to thank everyone again for their help. Big improvement on my uploads.
- RyanEs
LR2: sRGB, JPG quality 100%, 240 ppi, full size, no additional sharpening

"The Pianobell is an innovative approach to the old doorbell by Li Jian. As you can see from the picture attached bellow the Pianobell was inspired by a piano. This concept is great because it allows your visitors to perform a short piece of music on this small “instrument”, and is something that you’ve never saw before."

I saw a young woman in the DB ticket station with these. They looked kind of funny, but they looked good on her (she had a body that could show them off) --- and yes, the holes were in the front.

I just finished the first chapter of the excellent Scott Kelby book. It says: "If Your Photos Aren't Sharp, the Rest Doesn't Matter". Apparently I do just about everything wrong. I feel like I wasted the last 2 years (of taking pictures, that is). I almost got the fireworks right this past 4th, having followed Kelby's how-to, but I did not think about turning IS off on the lens when shooting on the tripod. While the fireworks were bright enough and exposure short enough (3 sec) for the vibration not to matter too much, I was amazed at the waves the perfectly stationary city lights made on my 8-15-second test shots when the camera was on the tripod.

Pop-quiz compliments of Mr. Kelby. What aperture should you shoot at for the sharpest photos? The smallest the lens will go? Like f/22 or something? Wrong. According to Scott, it's usually two full stops down from wide open. So if your lens is f/2.8 the sharpest aperture is between f/5.6 and f/8. I suppose I could have figured out the IS on a tripod "gotcha" on my own. But how am I supposed to know stuff like this?
- Alexei Tolkachev
I've read a couple of Scott Kelby's books. His writing style is clear and easy to understand, with a little humor thrown in too. I can't speak to this book directly, but if it is anything like his Photoshop & Lightroom books, it should be an excellent choice for beginner to intermediate photographers.
- Jeff P. Henderson
Alexi: this is a well-known feature of optics. I learned that in high school from my high-school photography teacher. Lenses generally will be 30% sharper when stopped down two to three stops from wide open. But turning off IS? I forget to do that sometimes too (on video). It's amazing when you see things shaking while you are on a tripod.
- Robert Scoble
Nothing worse than coming back from shooting sunsets in Hawaii with results of about 5% good pictures to read Kelby tell me in 2 minutes how to do it better. On the other hand, I got at least one sunset on my own that was good enough to blow up to 20x30 for my wall.
- David Thomas
Nigel, funny how Amazon lists "your" book and "my" book as "Frequently Bought Together". I guess that's a vote of confidence on their part, no? Thanks for the tip.
- Alexei Tolkachev
Robert, I guess I feel better - about the IS-induced shake. My problem is I almost never shoot on a tripod. Scott's recommendation goes: "In a place that won't allow you to use tripod, do this..." It appears he can't even conceive of a photographer who voluntarily forgoes this most basic (in his book) of necessities. No pun intended.
- Alexei Tolkachev
