How your printer tricks you into buying ink and toner when you don't need it. - By Farhad Manjoo - Slate Magazine - http://www.slate.com/id...
I have an HP Printer sitting next to a Lexmark printer. They both lie, but the Lexmark is more aggressive in its falsehoods. I really really hate paying 5X the cost of the printer per year just for ink. This article gives you one hint and points you toward others. - Frank Derfler from Bookmarklet

Over at the Information Dissemination Blog, a fine Website for any interested in current Naval activity, they are sifting reports that the Russian Missile Cruiser Moskva has put to sea in the face of the NATO naval activity (now apparently including Turkish ships) in the Black Sea off of Georgia. - Frank Derfler from Bookmarklet

This Blog is doing an excellent job of providing multisource information fusion regarding the conflict between Georgia and Russia. This situation could significantly impact our oil prices in the US and it could impact the presidential election... in many ways. When you see Edwards parading his "faith" on stage you realize that there is no end to his egotism. He thinks that no rules apply to him. He "didn't love her" and his wife's cancer was in remission at the time! Oh, so then it's okay! We dodged a bullet ... again. - Frank Derfler from Bookmarklet

BLACKFIVE: US Troops in Georgia not in Harm's Way...Yet - http://www.blackfive.net/main...
Sorry to ruin your weekend, but this situation between Georgia and Russia should be at the top of every news broadcast.. not John Edwards.. This has the potential to drag us into a nasty situation. CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive - Poll: Most Americans want offshore drilling « - Blogs from CNN.com - http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008...
Note that the Blogsphere has attacked this story with hundreds of comments.. mostly negative. CNNPolitics.com thinks that's dandy, of course, because all they want is hits. In fact, offshore drilling WILL impact the price of gas immediately because it will drive away speculators. We are at such a steep point in the hockeystick demand curve that any decrease in speculation will drop the price of oil significantly. Also, the left's argument that oil companies already have plenty of land ignores the fact that there is no oil in most of that land and where there is gas, like Destin Dome, they have been forbidden to take it out. Finally, the pollution argument is pure BS, Texas, LA, & MS have great beaches AND lots of revenue from oil and gas drilling. The beaches of Gulf Shores AL, near drilling rigs, are just as nice as Destin, FL where there is no drilling ... and no income! - Frank Derfler from Bookmarklet

Got my iphone earlier today. Fantastic UI, design, app store. But device is underpowered and I need convincing on the keyboard.
Yea, the keyboard has been one of the things holding me back but I'm almost over it. If the UI or an app allowed for keyboard use in landscape mode I think it would be much better since spacing appears to be the issue for me. - Mark Krynsky
I have the G1 - initially I was waiting for the lines and hype to die down so I could buy a new one in piece, but I'm starting to wonder if it's necessary. I'm hearing lots of battery-life issues, and maybe I'm better off with Edge data and more juice than a mediocre GPS and faster data speeds (when I can pick up 3G) - drs650
And, I don't think the apps are all that compelling. I keep reviewing the list looking for something "good", but all I find are apps that are sort of "half there". For example, the iPod is location-sensitive right? How about an app for runners and bikers that simply gives you distance/time/calories? How about an app for pilots that gives a trip log? These first apps are just not what I had hoped for. - Frank Derfler

Soya-based foods may harm male fertility | Science | The Guardian - http://www.guardian.co.uk/science...
"The study showed men who consumed more than two portions of soya-based foods a week had, on average, 41m fewer sperm per millilitre of semen than men who had never eaten soya products. The apparent fall in sperm count is unlikely to make healthy men infertile, but some experts said it could have a significant impact on those already with lower than average sperm counts. A sperm count of between 80m and 120m per ml is regarded as normal, while men who produce fewer than 20m sperm per ml are regarded as clinically subfertile." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
I am happy to report that my sperm count is in the normal range, and I consume soy milk almost daily with my cereal, and tofu about once a week. What this study fails to mention is the way in which the soy is processed makes a large difference. Soy produced in the traditional asian method, by first boiling the beans, removes many of the bad parts of the soy which can be bad for our health. Many western soy products skip this step. If soy is bad for sperm count, why are there so many Chinese people? - Robert Felty
you know, my vasectomy had the same effect? - Chris Jones from twhirl
"If soy is bad for sperm count, why are there so many Chinese people? "- Bravo -- the best line of the evening! - Frank Derfler
As Rob points out, traditional Asian methods of production may neutralize this problem, so the fertility of the Chinese people does not conflict with the research findings. I've also read claims that Chinese soy consumption is overstated, though I don't know if this is true. - Paul Buchheit
"If soy is bad for sperm count, why are there so many Chinese people?" - actually the question should be how come the Chinese are procreating even less then the generic trends of the rest of world. Was it just becuase of the 1 family child rule or soya ?? maybe the 1 child family rule is just a ruse to hide the true fact of soya !! - k I just made this all up .. but thats the way my mind thinks - LOL - Peter Dawson
The less viable sperm I have, the better! Hand me the soy milk :) - Clint Ecker
It makes sense. Soy is full of isoflavones that emulate female hormones, but it shouldn't be surprising that if soy by-products are used to treat females then it could have adverse effects on males. - Gabe
