“Dear R&B Artists who can't sing without Auto-Tune: Enough. Seriously. If you sing like the white girl on Real Housewives of Atlanta, take up carpentry or plumbing. No more of this tomfoolery. Whatever it takes to stop mucking up Pro Tools. Love, Derrick”

This is why I try to find live recordings before committing myself to fandom ;) Duffy sounded blah to me live on Later..., for example. - Michael W. May
I cannot handle all these songs with these people sounding like Soundwave from the Transformers cartoon. CAN'T! - Derrick
Damn Cher, letting that genie out of the bottle... - सत्याग्रह [Bren]
Derrick, I love your letters to people who aren't listening but should. - Jeanine Walters via Alert Thingy
Jeanine, just doing my part, lol. - Derrick
@Zee - yeppers, exact clip too. Sure, she's not godsawful like those Derrick is talking about, but to mine ears, she's really not that great either. - Michael W. May
wow u must have high standards, i thought it was pretty darn impressive - Zee from WeDoCreative
Derrick kills the next meme before it happens - MiɳiMagɘ (Sexy Scimitar)
Most do think so *shrug* I have weird ears. Besides, I heard Adele first and she's phenomenal. - Michael W. May
I thought Duffy was pretty terrible on SNL earlier this year (unlike Adele, who killed it). - Jason Toney
But, back on topic, I don't hate auto-tune. Particularly for artists who I have no desire to see perform live or for artists who are using it as a tool rather than a deception (see Kanye West and Lil' Wayne). - Jason Toney
J. Holiday? Omarion? Who? Name names...LOL. I know a few artists (singers) personally that love some autotune. I've always been of the mindset that, if I can't sound just about exactly like my CD live....not gonna do it. - ♫ Rahsheen™
auto-tune. The 808 drum machine of the '00s. Producers should be over it by now, but we're the idiots who keep forgetting how much we hated it just last week. - Mauricio
Thank you. Thank you. One hopes they are listening! - Abby Martin

McCain's people need to put her in that Hannibal Lechter mask. Jeez... - Mark VandenBerg
Never forget: for decades, neoconservatives have been hatching plans to use American power to attack Iraq, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia -- all on behalf of Israel. And this is why they promoted candidates like Sarah Palin to the forefront of American politics. (William Kristol was Palin's biggest booster in the McCain camp.) They have consistently tried to smear anyone who opposes their policies as antisemites, terrorists and neo-Nazis. McCain and Palin are continuing to push all the leading neoconservative propaganda themes -- they are fulfilling the wishes of their masters. - Sean McBride
What an embarrassment. - j1m
Yikes, she really did say that -- "In her interview with Fox News’ Greta van Susteren last night, Gov. Sarah Palin appeared to claim that the U.S. needs to “win” the non-existent war with Iran: We realize that more and more Americans are starting to see the light there and understand the contrast. And we talk a lot about, OK, we’re confident that we’re going to win on Tuesday, so from there, the first 100 days, how are we going to kick in the plan that will get this economy back on the right track and really shore up the strategies that we need over in Iraq and Iran to win these wars?" - Mike Reynolds

Bonsai Resuscitation Trick #57: Stare It Down
October 29 at 3:19 pm - Link
You can't really see them here, but my Charlie-Brown's-Christmas-tree of a Schefflera bonsai is sprouting bitty little leaves as I stare at it with determination. I decided several weeks ago to get all bonsai-hardcore with it and chopped off several leaves in an attempt to make it sprout more of them. In response almost everything died. But I could see it still had some life in it, so... Now 3 leaves are sprouting in each place where one turned brown and fell off weeks ago :) - Kamilah Gill

"The First Amendment is actually not that complicated. It can be read from start to finish in about 10 seconds. It bars the Government from abridging free speech rights. It doesn't have anything to do with whether you're free to say things without being criticized, or whether you can comment on blogs without being edited, or whether people can bar you from their private planes because they don't like what you've said. If anything, Palin has this exactly backwards, since one thing that the First Amendment does actually guarantee is a free press. Thus, when the press criticizes a political candidate and a Governor such as Palin, that is a classic example of First Amendment rights being exercised, not abridged." - l.m.orchard

You actually listen to the radio when you drive? How retro. :-) - Michael Tefft
Or cellphone ringtones - Glen Campbell
Or the sound of water/beer/any liquid being poured. That NEVER makes me want to drink something. It just makes me have to pee. - Nine
“It should be illegal to make radio ads" There; all fixed... - Mark VandenBerg
Radio4 in the UK is a must listen. Today in the morning on the way to work and PM on the way back. - Rob Brammeld
The radio ads for male enhancement products need to go, too. - April Russo
I hate that too...also ban the ones with "honking" noises...soo lame, come on! - Susan Beebe
Yes, Susan, the honking, too! I hate that. - Trish R
I hate those too. I basically stopped listening to free radio except for XM. - imabonehead
The radio station I listen to now is commercial-free but back when I listened to other radio stations that had commercials, I HATED that. - Rochelle
Through all my years in radio, I never made or permitted to be made a commercial with a siren on it. I took a bunch of 'em off the air, too. I agree: it's not just annoying, it could be dangerous. At least 70% of radio listening happens in cars. - Chris Baskind
Heh, what about songs that have sirens in them? - Victor Ganata
radio marketing morons! - Susan Beebe
Haha! Agreed! - Michael Forian
@Trish There are certain unwritten rules in broadcast and not using sirens in radio ads is one of them. When it does happen the hacks responsible are usually low-rent advertisers who produce their own creative. Times are so hard stations that might have rejected such creative are now taking the money. Sign of the times. - Dave Martin
lol @ how retro. - Monique
Actually, according to the latest stats, broadcast radio has 260 mil weekly uniques. There is some really good radio out there, you just need to find it. - Dave Martin
For good radio, may I suggest the station I just mentioned being commercial free? Live streaming plus archives of past shows: http://kexp.org/ It's also on FM radio in both Seattle and New York. - Rochelle
The only radio I listen to is ad-free, but I mostly listen to my music and I have tons of songs with sirens in them. Some of them are obviously the song, but there's a Wyclef song, that I always wind up checking the rearview for lights. - Anika Malone
I totally agree - Wayne Schulz
No one mentioned crying babies? I *HATE* those! - zoblue (Zulema)
All the more reason to not listen to the radio! DAP + car integration FTW - Sparky
it doesn't help when DJ's integrate sirens into their music either...Public Enemy's 911 is a Joke comes to mind - Pete Delucchi
let's just push for better music and better ads - Anthony K. Valley ©
I didn't notice any sirens in my podcasts. Oh you meant that olde fangled radio thing. - Ernie Oporto

“I haven't turned on FF's new mirror-to-twitter feature.”
November 1 at 3:28 am - Link
I don't want everything going to Twitter, rather I want the ability to send something to Twitter manually. Only a small number of my FF posts belong in my Twitter stream. I'd also like the ability to send someone else's posts to Twitter, a sort of approximation of "Like" applied to Twitter, from FF. - Dave Winer
I think perhaps FF's destiny is to be an editorial system. Or is it a bookmark tool? I use it that way mostly because it has the ability to save a picture along with a text clip. - Dave Winer
I do like the idea of sending stuff to Twitter manually. - Chris Nixon
That is a really interesting idea, having FriendFeed with the ability to "retweet" something. You got my vote. - Rob Diana
It gets even more interesting with an open architecture for pushing stuff to blogs, email, SMS, etc. Twitter isn't the only interesting destination. - Dave Winer
I too would like to control what comments (and content) go to Twitter on a case by case basis. Friendfeed + Twitter = Future Merger partners. And soon imhuo (in my humble uninformed opinion). - Wayne Schulz
Twitter --> FF makes sense, as FF is aggregating my activity. FF --> Twitter feels funny. RSS posts into Twitter feel similarly wrong. Don't like Twitter as newsfeed aggregator. - Marko Bon
How do you turn this functionality on? - Peter Ghosh CISSP
Under your account settings. - Roberto Bonini
I kind of like the new feauture so far. For me its a way of increasing my Tweets. I don't comment to much so I don't feel like its being spammy but I would like to see some more control of how and what gets posted. - Nelson de Witt via twhirl
I've turned ff2twitter on / experimental though, I'd definitely vote for more flexibility, too - schilke
I am trying the Friendfeed-to-Twitter repost feature now - Stowe Boyd
it does get too noisy, especially comments from FF. another vote for the like/retweet function. Although if you reshare it and have ff->twitted that already works. - Paul Arterburn

“Would anyone find utility in a link to bookmark an item (via; delicious and other services) next to the 'like' link?”
October 28 at 3:36 am - Link
hells yeah! - Vincent van Wylick
Yes. Its annoyning to have to friend and bookmark. Though, given that Friendfeed and Del.icio.us cross over to some extent... but I like the idea, because I actually use both. - Greg
Just had an insight: if I subscribe to my "likes" rss-feed, it more or less becomes a bookmarking system. But the delicious use of tagging is so much more advanced and I would really just prefer that + like doesn't automatically mean: remember. - Vincent van Wylick
@Vincent i've actually started using a private room as a bookmark room - works very well so far - Zee from WeDoCreative
I don't know about bookmarking to an external service just b/c it seems like it could get very echo-y in your feed. However, I really wish there was a 'favorite' or 'star' capability similar to Twitter and Google. Would make it SO MUCH EASIER to go back and check on conversations... - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Zee: I just have a number of bookmark feeds in my Netvibes now: Delicious (as a widget that support tags: FTW), Netvibes own bookmarking system, and now the FriendFeed likes feed. I'll see how it goes. - Vincent van Wylick
Agree with Tina on the echo-problem that would arise. FriendFeed should add the 'import tag x only' option for Delicious. - Vincent van Wylick
