FFholic.com currently tracks 300,280 users and 25,060 rooms on FriendFeed. And this data is shown on the main page. You can check it out anytime you like ;)
Now we need stats on what percentage of users are passive (i.e., no discussion).
- Mitch
Too much. It's so senseless. BTW. I don't follow people with private feeds generally. It's too dangerous, that i reshare something, or put it in another service like twitter. So, I better not following those, because I don't want to "uncover" their postings. But a lot of people do, so it's senseless in many ways.
- Ryo / Fuck Facebook
i'm not sure - on the 'active rooms' - the 3rd most active room is called "Science21" - yet the last bit of activity in there was on Monday! What's going on there FFholic? :)
- Zee.
Your algorithms are pretty good, but they are only serving to fuel my addiction...please make it stop!
- Alex Scoble
where are you seeing the stats on the most active rooms?
- R. Ferguson
Zee, looks like it's probably because there are some conversations on there with over 100 comments each. The algorithm blends number of users, and numbers of likes and comments as well as recency (that's not a word is it?) of posts.
- Laura Norvig
Actually, maybe they don't even take into account how recent the posts are. Hard to tell.
- Laura Norvig
I'd like to know what goes into determining the Most Discussed post.
- DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
Actually we look at the character count total of each post and find posts with more wordly comments. Only comments sent by someone other than the original poster are taken into account.
- Baris Seker
Why are rooms missing from the most active room list? US Politics comes up as #6 in a search, but doesn't appear in the main list.
- Steve Isaacs
You're probably looking at the English rooms list. That room doesn't have a language assigned to it yet and that's why it is only in the All languages room list http://www.ffholic.com/Rooms... and not in English rooms. I admit that it is an issue though and we will get on that.
- Baris Seker
Poll: On FFHolic web pages and RSS feeds, would you rather have a link to the FriendFeed page or to the original post (ex: original blog post)?
FF item gives both a link to the original and additional features (like, comment, reshare). Why settle for less and link to the original?
- ĎÚβĨŐÚŚ Dod
And: I wish the RSS feeds for FFHolic would include the full comments on items, like Friendfeed's Best of Day RSS feed.
- Sean McBride
And yes! Forgot to mention about 155 private rooms we discovered.
- FFholic.com
I have a private room! I have a private room! I have a private room! And ya can't come in! ;0)
- Yolanda
The Ladies Room doesn't show up in room stats, and our room is pretty freaking hopping even though it's private. We are tres offended! :D
- DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
Don't nobody care about y'all private-ass chick room! *runs ass off*
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Poor little Rah. It was nice knowing you. Mo is gonna whoop Sheenybuns.
- Yolanda
FFholic.com's most discussed entries are usually about election in these days which means our system works pretty well. - http://www.ffholic.com/Entries...
There are two screenshots below. One of them is when we are signed in, the other one is when we aren't. Some entries do not show up when we are not signed in which means only we see what we share... We are confused... Is this a bug or what? Any ideas?
It's a good thing that you credited the right Scoble. Thanks for that. :) Of course this brings up the questions, how will you figure out what discussions are high quality?
- Alex Scoble
I don't see you guys responding. It's been over 10mins...LOL. What makes a high-quality discussion?
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
We believe high quality discussions doesn't have 1 word comments like "Wow", "LOL", "HaHa" and etc. Do you think it is true and do you have any suggestions to improve it? And actually do you find the current most discussed entries list useful and high quality?
- FFholic.com
Request: RSS feeds for Most Discussed English Entries on FriendFeed and Most Liked English Entries on FriendFeed.
- Sean McBride
The meaning of "Most Discussed" vs. "Most Commented" is hard to distinguish. I don't think "Most Discussed" is the right label.
- Laura Norvig
FFholic: this entry (one of mine) occupied the number 1 slot on FFholic's Most Discussed English Entries earlier this evening: http://tinyurl.com/42dvdq Later in the evening it disappeared from the list. What happened?
- Sean McBride
Most discussed entries have more wordy comments than average. We have a simple algorithm but I think it is pretty successful at picking out the hottest discussions.
- Baris Seker
Great -- found the icon for the RSS feeds. This is a valuable service you folks have put together. You are doing much of the data mining I requested from Friendfeed a few months ago.
- Sean McBride
Baris: how do you define "more wordy"? Total number of words in the discussion? Total length of the words in the discussion as measured by characters? Vocabulary level of words in the discussion? (I have a special interest in automated methods for measuring the cognitive complexity of texts.) Thanks. Again, love your work here.
- Sean McBride
Do you guys track "most blocked"? Might be doing us all a service.
- Oldengrey (Jay)
Jay -- an even more interesting metric to data mine -- social networks which engage in the most blocking.
- Sean McBride
Baris -- regarding the RSS feed for Most Discussed English Entries: is there any chance you could include in the feed the text of the initial entries, with clickable links to the Friendfeed discussions? Currently the feed only provides clickable access to the links pointed to by the entries.
- Sean McBride
Sean: Internally we were debating whether we should give the original link or the friendfeed link on the entries. I'll post a discussion and see what people think. Thanks
- Baris Seker
Baris -- I for one would like to be able to see both the original and Friendfeed links for entries, as well as all the comments (as in the feed for Friendfeed Best of Day). What do you think?
- Sean McBride
Baris: Might this be possible with FFholic? Rank Friendfeed users by number of links PLUS likes PLUS discussions PLUS subscriptions shared with me. (Shared discussions: users who have made comments under the same entries I have made comments.)
- Sean McBride
FFholic: Make this list for everyone in friendfeed!! : )) For our all subscriptions!
- Erhan Erdogan
Inherent problem with lists. There will always be solid people (and brilliant new people) left off. It's a decent reference for techie followers As for me, I'm following Alex :)
- Charlie Anzman
Cool data analysis - notice the high number of subscriptions AND subscribers...very neat!
- Susan Beebe
Charlie, I totally agree with you, some people will always be left off the list. Given the size of the list, there will be plenty of people missed. Robert also had a caveat to his list, he uses FriendFeed as an aggregator. So there will be people not "active" on FriendFeed, but active on Twitter or some other feed.
- Rob Diana
FFHolic, is there any chance of getting charts like these for everyone? That would be very cool.
- Rob Diana
Any marketers using FF or FB data on their own sites for demographic segmentation? Just wondering if we should ask, are you on FF? or FB? etc.
- Alan Edgett
This also shows Robert is not only following "big name" bloggers. He's following the people he likes, regardless of how popular they are.
- Michael Krigsman
I'd like to know what "Techie" means. It could be subjective. Because most of the people I know ARE techie but they're not on that list.
