John: I remembered the flintstones' infant daughter Pebbles Flintstone after your comment. She was using a phone like this Stone, wasn't she? : )
- Erhan Erdogan
Still: the Apple Age 1976-2008. The Stone Age 3 million BC-3000 BC. Steve Jobs ain't gonna be around *that* long (barring major innovations in life prolongation that I'm sure he'd be able to afford.)
- Victor Ganata
For most situations, I prefer the iPhone. I get really bad reception with my rock.. and it's hard to check my stocks and get directions to the pizza joint with it. But it works great as a makeshift mallet for pounding tent stakes when camping! My iPhone's a little to fragile for that. At least my iPhone can double as a flashlight in a pinch!
- Jackson D. Carson
I'm sorry for this post, I wanna delete it now. :-) I had an iPhone gift and I'm very happy with my new Apple. She is really better than stone. http://friendfeed.com/e... :-)
- Erhan Erdogan
...because it has a touchscreen, right? O:-)
- Marcos Marado
In the last 12 hours Alex Scoble has participated in a meme, joined a slightly off-color room, and commented on a last.fm favorites post with the appropriate lyrics of a suggestive song. It's official: he's one of us. We salute you, Alex!
I agree - one of my favorite FriendFeeders. Alex - feel free to lose the (bro) parentheses! - you don't need 'em. :)
- Steve Isaacs
Is it sad that I'm already only 2k likes away from having more likes on friendfeed than my brother? Got a ways to go to beat his comments number though.
- Alex Scoble
Make your brother change his to (AlexScoble's Bro)
- B. Hatin
Good thing ... thought you were stalking him :) Added Alex to my favorites (despite the political stuff :) Still thinkin' about Robert ....
- Charlie Anzman
Alex is one of my favorites on FF. I'm glad his assimilation is complete. :) BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
- Her Lindsay-ness
I think Alex should have a nickname...like Scoblenator :P
- imabonehead
I think Robert should have (Alex'sBro) behind his name on FF...
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Mark: I've tried to change my name, but FriendFeed gives me an error. Let me try again.
- Robert Scoble
I just tried again and FF says that's not a valid name. I try spelling it a number of different ways and it doesn't let me change my name. Sigh.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, make sure you type it where it says 'Name' and not where it says 'Nickname'.
- Corie
Corie: I tried it there and vice versa. Doesn't matter. Doesn't let me change it.
- Robert Scoble
Huh... Well, it was worth a shot to be part of what Tina called "an epic meme!"
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
Hmm, maybe it's a character or word limit.
- Corie
There is a 25 character limit, so Scobilizer(Alex'sBro) would work at 21. I've always had errors trying to change my name in regular FF but no issues in beta...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Yeah, I felt the same way...but apparently some people are even more active than any of us. At least Mona is still on there...if she ever falls, we know the Seventh Seal has been opened.
- Neal Jansons
They reset this somehow within the last 18 hours... the top people did have nearly twice as many points and some people are far lower than they should be.
- Michael W. May
from twhirl
well Mona has dropped a fair few places - she's not in the top 15 users any more. Each page is 15...and Cee Bee LOL.
- Zee.
no way! Zee should definitely be up there!!
- Susan Beebe
lol guys...frankly i really couldn't possibly put more time into this place. I run four rooms actively and I post, comment & like as if my life depended on it...! :)
- Zee.
Wonder if the rooms are counted or if its the public posts only.
- CW™
Zee, you're obviously still getting way too much done AFK
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Lots of bored office people, LOL!!! :D I was up to #44 once. Down to #67. Breathing a little easier, now...
- Helen Sventitsky
As best I recall the points are weighted so that direct FF posts count more than other imported posts, comments count more than likes, and comments on your own threads don't count at all. They used to have a link on their site re: how it was figured.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
it has to be wrong - like outsanity said, how can someone with 0 subscribers be 3rd...
- Zee.
It will settle back into something normal in a little while. I'm assuming some people were very active right around the time the stat reset, so now, things will go back to normal based on actual activity. Call it homeostasis or whatever, but it will "fix" itself.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Wow. Saw my ranking on ffholic snap upwards from 51 to 24 yesterday, just because of 3 videos I posted. Evidently, I need to act goofy on video more often. :)
I find that FF's own Firefox "Add to FriendFeed" link that can be placed on the toolbar is really helpful. I am not sure I need a timer.
- Wayne Schulz
toolbars make me cry, horrible little things that get in the way of your browser!
- alphaxion
I've had it installed for a few weeks but I turned off the actually toolbar bit and just get FFholic stats for everyone while browsing FF. I have enough toolbars on FrF. Shame you cannot move toolbars onto the same line as another. Fire.fm takes up little space and could easily fit along side the StumbleUpon or even Google toolbar. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
I'm using an EEE, the last thing I need is another toolbar taking up valuable screen real-estate :)
- Bec Rowe @d0tski
Apparently there has been some changes on ffholic. Apparently I'm on FF too much and have bumped my way to #5, though RAP is consistently #8. Time to recommend a new obsession.
- Lindsey is Fierce!
from Mento
Because it's giving you the person's rank from all of FF. So CeeBee is now the 2nd most active user, which means the most active user isn't on the English list.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I'm all the way down at 893. I need to comment more instead of just being a lurker
- Alan Simpson
Alan, commenting is (for me at least) the real value of FF. There's almost always a good conversation going on somewhere, and that's what I like =)
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I'm back around 500 now, had a really busy couple of weeks doing stuff, so my rating took a bit of a hit :(
- Iain Baker
I've dropped down to 28th most active; 103rd most followed... too busy at work, but still LOVE FF... job is hectic!
- Susan Beebe
My activity has dropped, too. Do they reset the counters every month or something?
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Tina, the conversation is what I like about FF as well. I just can't bring myself to jump into the conversations sometimes.
- Alan Simpson
Rah, I'm not really sure how it works. I'm guessing they use the API to go back as far as they can in your activity and go from there. For some reason, I'm thinking that's 900 items, so it would be a 'rolling' period of activity and also would be a different time period for everyone. But again, I don't know for sure...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I see people using the Bookmarklet to share videos from YouTubs...mine doesn't work for video. Am I doing something wrong or was the bookmarklet revised at some point?
Yours seem to work for me! Mine don't work, but I've been using KwiClick, 'cause I can't get the Bookmarklet to stay on my toolbar. :(
- Ladybug Heather
Ah - get the FriendFeed Toolbar from FFHolic. That seems to work much better for me.
- Ladybug Heather
Even for FF, I don't think I'm willing to give up Chrome. Bookmarklet works fine for me for images, but not for videos (I have to favorite them in YouTube to get them to show up here.)
- Scott of Two Countries
Is there a time frame? Friday night is quiet. Let's say I post a story/link for friends again, 24 hours later? 48? etc? Thanks a lot! :)
- Ed Shahzade /NextInstinct
also makes monitor duplicate apps in the apps room 10x easier!
- Zee.
How many times a week do you check your stats on FFholic? Me personally, I do so usually once a day. I just like to see where it says I'm at activity wise.
- Zio Burp
- Andrea Rossetti
FFholic - Man, this is making me feel responsible for my own actions ! (No need to worry ... havin' too much fun :) - http://www.ffholic.com/UserSub...
I just looked at 'all' the networks I actually belong to .... I am disconnecting from absolutely all ... and then asking Tina to start a Stupid Blogger Social Network (Look out Zuckerberg ... you're toast kid :)
- Charlie Anzman
HAAahahahahhaaha!!! Why do I get the feeling SBN would be the most meme and cat ridden network in the history of the intertubes? Oh, and with some econ and science thrown in, just to keep people on their toes.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Tina - Instant VC. Period. Just add a dash of Mona !
- Charlie Anzman
What does getting that news 24h early do for you, Robert? I feel the same smug feeling seeing slower outlets sometimes but I'm not always sure I benefit from being so close to the news volcano.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I work for Yahoo! News - I get to see it before it happens....
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
if wsj was smart, it would have known to marry you to its online platform - and you'd be getting it there instead :)
- Patricia
Guy here at work got an SMS on his iphone today from Rogers - USB power adapter recall - quick search in FF showed that tidbit 10 days ago!
- Capn' One Eye - adrift
For all those not in high-tech, Google Reader, Friendfeed, and Techneme isn't an option. Reading the news in the WSJ is the resource.
- Randy Ksar
from twhirl
Robert, buy the WSJ. They cover and write the news. What would happen to aggregators like Google Reader, Friendfeed and others if there were longer anyone doing that?
- Rod Bauer
from twhirl
I glanced over the front page of the NYTimes today on a coffee break and thought to myself, "geez, that's all old news already".
- Brian Ries
The definition of "News" is something that is "New" to the reader. Those not sitting online all day can get a handy filtered, noise free and considered opinion in a portable format. In-depth analysis is missing from "lifestream journalism" and a good newspaper will expand "yesterday's news"
- Michael Rose
The thing that the WSJ can do for someone is add in depth analysis and opinion. Something the social media echo chamber is rapidly showing itself to be HORRIBLE about. We get lots of info on FF / Twitter / Techmeme but much of it is distorted and biased almost beyond use. Don't get me wrong, I think there is HUGE value in FF / Twitter and love them both - but it is becoming clear that more in depth outlets are also needed.
- Soulhuntre
Agreed. It'd be tragic for all if we lost what newspapers bring to the table. People should want to be helping them make the transition, not gleefully clapping their demise. Those are huge entities who supply jobs. Web 2.0 is quick to want the death of all things 'old' but sadly, none ever talk about or create models to replace it. At best, one out of the million blogs will be grown enough to be able to employ 30 people. Conde Nast employs hundreds and thousands. It's just a loss all around.
- Patricia
I love my elitist brethren. And imagine, some people don't get or can't get news AS IT HAPPENS WORLDWIDE.app.php like the rest of the upper class. So yeah, thanks for that.
- Eric Rice
the same with every newspaper in Sweden.
- Svartling
Internet = breaking news, newspaper = backstory
- Alex Nesbitt
This is the same reason I'm letting all my magazine subscriptions lapse. There's nothing in them I hadn't already seen.
- Joey Gibson
There's still something about enjoying a relaxing Sunday morning with the paper, though.
- MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
My wife's allergic to legumes; since most papers are printed with soy-based ink these days, I haven't subscribed to a newspaper since the mid-1980's.
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
that might be true for the news and headlines, but lengthier and more explanatory stuff often requires a bit of digging and some time to weigh and reflect -- there's much more to news than what's on the envelope.
- Adrian Chan
I doubt that everything in the WSJ was in FriendFeed . There are only a few papers in America because most are really part of a homogeneous blob due to all the syndicated stories they pick up. The WSJ does not rely on syndication, and instead produces its own material; it is by far the best newspaper in the states and is interesting all the way through. If you said the NYT or LAT, yes they are all over FriendFeed and have little depth unless they are articles dealing with culture or their local domain
- RAPatton
same here although I still read the WSJ (online only)
- Chris Selland
Nothing new. I have stopped reading newspapers. I have my Google Reader in my mobile to take care of the news. Newspapers are yesterdays story.
- Sidharth Dassani
More than likely, print media will be hybrid models or go digital entirely. expect it in TV as well (already has happened, etc.). the next project i'm considering is a hybrid model in hopes to create an example that can work for both. Don't kill print media!! Just help it become more modern :)
- Patricia
Makes sense. Its not like there's anything interesting going on in finance at the moment.
- john conroy
I'm a fan of the WSJ. They might not be the fastest, but they have some of the best insight I've found. FriendFeed, TechMeme, and Google Reader are better tools for determining what happened. I think the WSJ is better for figuring out the why and how. Different tools for different jobs.
- Aaron Schaub
The most "techie" FriendFeeders: http://scobleizer.com/2008... -- got anyone else who deserves to be on this list? Post their FriendFeed URLs here and I'll consider them. Every one here has been hand picked by me and me alone.
Bora: see my brother for that list. He likes cat photos. :-)
- Robert Scoble
:( i'm so sad...ok, disappointed rather. I run techineurope & the flippin' Apps room! :)
- Zee.
Boy I've come a long from being an ex-banker if I make your list Robert. Thanks for the inclusion.
- Hutch Carpenter
I'm sure it's a lovely list for those who wish to focus on tech. With that said, I opt to not check it as I'm certain I'm not on it, and I see more tech in FF than I know what to do with already: Robert's Likes take care of that =)
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I don't make the list? Aww. I think I am at least as technical (on my blog as well as FF) as a lot of the folks on your list.
- Phil G
I talk about tech that all of you guys are afraid to touch - chiefly an understanding of MS server products and the destruction of the net through the use of DPI (limiting bandwidth or even access to specific sites/applications across the net) and the abuse of DPI (phorm and their ad peddling scum).. do I qualify?
- alphaxion
It's funny since I joined FF I've found that there's so much more to talk about than tech! You might not know it from what I post on here but I am a super tech-head geek.
- Her Lindsay-ness
How in the hell does one even become 'techie' on FriendFeed without just aggravating the echo chamber? When I first came on here, I wanted to post techy stuff. Even got myself a blog on Profy before Profy became Profy but I found myself always nine steps behind everyone else. Seemed like a dead-end rat race to me so I went with just being adorably obnoxious instead.
- Akiva Moskovitz
@akiva niching is your friend.. I seem to be the only one on here that can argue about active directory and the challenges to the core of power for MS that openLDAP and exchange-a-like apps such as zimbra pose instead of looking at a browser and declairing MS dead.
- alphaxion
@alphaxion, I doubt you're the only one that _could_ but you're one of the few that really _wants_ to get into that kind of religious war.
- Her Lindsay-ness
I am a "techie" but like others, I dont bother to post much "techie" around here because of the amount of tech. Not sure this list is even a worthwhile venture because ultimately what value will it provide?
- Scott Jarkoff
Who has the THX home theater? Which brother was a dope and bought the PS3 just to have a BluRay player? And a techie who doesn't game? Boooring!
- Alex Scoble
I don't see it as a religious war.. especially since I'm OS agnostic. I grew up with apples, acorns and amigas, I was introduced to win3.11 in the early 90's and have supported windows server products from NT to 2008. I play around with linux and keep my eyes open. If someone genuinely does something good I'll agree, but I also refuse to fall for the "it's cool to bash MS just cause" camp and will acknowledge when they have done something right.
- alphaxion
Robert, I'm so supposed to be on this list. But before me, Zee for sure.
- Aaron Krug
I'm a techie by trade but social media has really fired up my interest in soft skills instead. I'm also a new father and low on cash so you won't see me ogling gadgets like I used to. I admire your drive to categorize everyone on FF, Robert. Hopefully you'll get some help from FF soon and won't have to compile all of this outside of the system.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
You are now working for linking the names on list, I am one of them; and really thanks for your valuable time! Hope to meet you one day!
- Erhan Erdogan
I wouldn't expect to be on the list, even though I'm probably at least as techie as any of the other PR people or MediaBistro. I'm really most techie as an audio geek, which I don't post about a lot here. Does being able to compose music & do sound design in ProTools, Max and at least a few dozen other geeky apps count? I know, everyone wants to be on the list.;-)
- Cathryn Hrudicka
+1 Cathryn, there are many different kinds of tech, not just I got an iPhone tech. You should be sharing, I'd be most interested in sound tech.
- Eric @ CS Techcast
Just realized i'm on the list. Thanks Robert !!!
- Nir Ben Yona
from twhirl
Robert, out of curiosity how the heck did you put this list together?
- Zee.
Ok wait, I'm calling BS on some of this list. Are you going by who these people are or how actively they post tech related items? Dave Morin is the 5426th most active user on FF. Engadget is 5505th. They aren't really participating.
- Shawn Farner
I was the lead engineer for Yahoo! Tech. Does that count for anything?
- Glen Campbell, B.A.
feel fee to add me if your looking for some geeks :)
- (jeff)isageek
i think Robert may live to regret posting this...:)
- Zee.
And also, note to the others: "Feel Free" to add me ; )
- Erhan Erdogan
Zee: I started about a week ago. I went through all 3300+ people I'm subscribed to (I've been gathering subscribers all year long). Then I added anyone I remembered as sharing something with me that's geeky over the years. I'll write more on the list after I finish building links.
- Robert Scoble
Veronica: big oversight. You're on the list now.
- Robert Scoble
Your page mentions that these are not necessarily "techies", contrary to what your post here suggests. I think your page is right. Nevertheless, great list. I wasn't expecting to see myself there, but that doesn't mean I don't want to ;).
- Vinay | विनय
By the way, I don't care about participation that much. I use FriendFeed as an aggregator first, community tool second. So, if someone is bringing great content in here (like TechCrunch, who is my #1 most "Liked" feed) then I'm perfectly happy recommending that feed to others, even if he/she doesn't participate here.
- Robert Scoble
I scanned the list and it's not "techie", it's more of a "People Who I Recommend" list, Robert. Why not call it what it is? :)
- Mona Nomura
Mona: yeah, there's a few on there who fit that description, but generally they are people who bring me tech news and not much noise.
- Robert Scoble
Thanks for including me, Robert - it's a great honor
- Jesse Stay
Yes, those of us who actually work in enterprise tech don't qualify. ;-) Kidding. I did send you a note re: Pandora though.
- Jennifer Leggio
We've come a long way since the "Elite Bloggers Joining FriendFeed In Droves" post I did six months ago. Good job, guys!
- Louis Gray
good list for social media and tech, a little light on folks who actually “make” real things - if there’s a “web 3.0″ coming i think it will be more about electrons meeting atoms than just facebook apps.
- make
wow, i did a quick scan and already i am seeing major discrepancies in this list including those that you say having feeds that are mostly made up of tweets. but because they are a vc or whatever they are on it. Sorry Robert, Mona's got you pegged. You should really consider renaming this.
- Carlos Ayala
You don't have enough Mark's on the list :)
- Mark Krynsky
Aww, Robert, you didn't have to. I was teasing you. I've just really started harnessing FriendFeed as of late. But it's a great network.
- Jennifer Leggio
Actually I'm not there. heh. Maybe it didn't populate yet.I'm adding a lot of folks I missed.
- Jennifer Leggio
Stirring it up again, my friend? Nice. What about me? I haven't lead you astray before, have I? (Oh, that little Scoblegate thing we had together.) We are on the cusp of a Cambrian Explosion of innovation, driven by the new "open stack." Follow me, so as not to miss any of the action. :)
- John McCrea
Thanks for including me in the list Robert. Honored.
- Mike Doeff
Robert - Please add me: MSCE: plus Security & Messaging; also certified Project Manager (PMP). Currently, I am the Manager over IT Integration and IT Project Management for Nelnet Enrollment Solutions (NNI) - includes Petersons.com, CUnet.com, CollegeandUniversity.net ($10M IT budget) - techie since youth - TRS80 baby just like you! VP of IT for PMIRochester.org. Founder of Rochester Social Media Club. Also highly technical wine enthusiast!
- Susan Beebe
Missed me and Susan? That's it Robert. I'm callin' Alex now
- Charlie Anzman
Thanks for including me on your list Robert!
- Mitchell Tsai
Thanks DeWitt and Charlie! - you guys rock! Robert's list is rich with movers, shakers, influencers, networkers, early adopters, VCs, Execs, startup enterpreneurs, bloggers, software geniuses, and smart FFers!
- Susan Beebe
Thanks for the mediabistro shout out- Seamus from MB
- Seamus Condron
Boo! Where’s the regular people? The ones who ARE NOT “pros, gurus, specialists, masters, professors, etc”…… You forgot about the underdogs who don't get the recognition they deserve. Us little peeps need love too; these "big timers" always get recognized.
- ChaCha Fance
Don't forget Sarah Perez and David Risley
- Jesse Stay
from twhirl
ah, i'd been traveling and wondered where a rash of new subscribers had come from - scoble effect in action, thanks robert :)
- mike "glemak" dunn
This list made me feel incredibly out of touch... of course I AM out of touch, but I don't like to feel that way. (but good list anyway thanks...)
- Trey Ratcliff
follow lots of those, but no me :( I blame scoble!
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
Thanks for putting me on the list - can't believe that I actually made it on there!
- Charlene Li
I really hate these lists... mostly because there's obviously way more than 100 people that are worth following - or we'd all have following lists of 100 or lest. Partially because the first thing we all do is look to see if we're on the list - if so, we breathe a sigh of relief, then worry about 'living up to being interesting', if not, we wonder why not and get sort of hurt and offended (I know I'm in good company, my twitterstream tells me so.)
- Lucretia Pruitt
On the same level tho - they clearly create traffic and conversation - this thread is huge, people on your list are seeing bumps in their follows, and the comments are still coming in on your blog. So they obviously generate something. Unfortunately, some of us walk away feeling like we must be "failing" somehow - and that's such a crappy feeling. I know that I don't use FF sufficiently to make any list like this - but have to wonder about other folks who didn't make the cut. :\
- Lucretia Pruitt
Thanks for the inclusion. My gripe is that there are still only FriendFeed "name claimers" on this list. I know that a few people on it don't use FF at all. And you don't know what blogs I write for, Robert? ;)
- Tamar Weinberg
tamar: ff started as a presence aggregator and it still does a fantastic job of that even for the "name claimers" you dislike - i don't think its a requirement for everyone to be liking and commenting up a storm on ff to bring value to a feed especially if they bring a lot of signal via their included services alone :)
- mike "glemak" dunn
Robert- Crazy girl who ran after you at BWE08....gave you my trading card for http://www.MyTechOpinion.com. I use my super powers for the positive advancement of real estate technology and social media! -Nicole Nicolay "NikNik" @nik_nik
- Nicole Nicolay
@Robert: Nice list—just want to mention that Sanjeev is also a FriendFeed founder as well as a developer.
- Jim Norris
This most have cost some time to do, its hard enough to click on each one and subscribe to them. And it's exactly the kind of action that could lead to more people flocking to FriendFeed. Nice work, but I sometimes wonder whether these services pay you (don't worry, I already know the answer's no).
- Vincent van Wylick
I guess getting all those member interviews doesn't count for much ;-)
- Andrew Feinberg
one thing that is interesting about this or the criteria used, is that what does "interaction on FF" mean? What if someone is creating a ton of interesting content on flickr or podcasting? I am stoked to see the people on this list on it. Many are friends, and most I respect (there is that @technosailor dude). Lists are inherently flawed, the contribution of the people included here are not.
- Micah Baldwin
I'm honored and astonished to have made this list... thanks Robert
- Brian Shields
thanks for having me in this list, even though with the recession I am not sure anybody should spend too much time worrying about that... thanks Robert anyway!
- Loic Le Meur
from twhirl
I use it. I like to check and see where I'm at in the active rankings. I also use it to find some of the popular stuff that I may have missed.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
I'm looking for most liked-discussed entries; especially users like techrunch, mashable.
- Erhan Erdogan
@Erhan Erdogan: Most discussed entries feature is on the way.
- FFholic.com
i still don't get i for i should use. is any one know it?
- Arda Çetin
Typically I don't use it unless someone mentions it. If anything I have used it to see who is "active" that I don't subscribe to. I also check to see if my addiction is getting out of hand. Currently sitting at the 295th most active user. Addiction is definitely getting out of control.
- Rob Diana
I watch it over days sometimes and note down who are the best performers over a period of time. Then I filter them to determine they are creating conversations I find interesting personally e.g. social media. This can find me a new interesting subscription once or twice a week and hopefully they will find me interesting and then I have a bilateral association with a strong conversationalist. Very useful strategy for me to meet, grow and connect.
- Roger Kondrat
