Reel Rumbles #20: “Avatar” vs. “District 9″ | Flickchart: The Blog
"2009 was a banner year for science fiction, one of the best for the genre in recent memory. It brought us franchise resurrections (J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek, McG‘s Terminator Salvation), critically-heralded indie gems (Duncan Jones‘ Moon), and, indeed, Oscar cred with, not one, but two Best Picture nominations. Which brings us to, arguably, two of the best sci-fi movies of the past decade, and this edition of Reel Rumbles: James Cameron‘s Avatar vs. Neill Blomkamp‘s District 9." - Flickchart from Bookmarklet
Moon was better than either. I wasn't overly impressed with either District 9 or Avatar, but District 9 was better science fiction even if the protagonist seemed like Michael Scott from The Office - RAPatton

Flickchart Film School: Pre-1920s | Flickchart: The Blog
"A few years ago, I realized that my knowledge of film history was very limited. My timeline of film began with Back to the Future, and I could tell you more about the films of Pauly Shore than those of Marlon Brando. So, with the acknowledgement that I was missing decades of great films, I decided to start way back at the beginning of film and work my way to the present, learning as much about film and watching as many movies as I could in the quest for cinematic enlightenment. Through this endeavor, I found some of the greatest films ever made, as well as learned an incredible amount about the history of film. I would like to share what I have learned so far in a chronological look at film I like to call “Flickchart Film School”." - Flickchart from Bookmarklet

How To Refashion Your Flickchart Rankings As Ratings | Flickchart: The Blog
"When Jeremy and I came up with the concept for Flickchart, one of the biggest catalysts was that we felt like ratings were never quite good enough to truly describe how much we liked a film using some sort of numerical value. With only 4 or 5 stars, there just wasn’t enough nuance to differentiate from movie to movie. But what about 1-100 scales? Or 10 stars? It was just too arbitrary to pick a value in the middle somewhere, and say concretely that we liked a film exactly 7.7 out of 10, or 64 out of 100. What could we actually point to within ourselves to say that one movie was a 65 out of 100 instead of a 64 out of 100. It just seems too hard to quantify when judging a single movie’s merits on their own, and coming up with a value that represents one’s honest opinion. The rest, as they say, is history…" - Flickchart from Bookmarklet

"...what about shows I was actually around to watch and experience? The preconceived notions I have of this era’s shows will make for a huge hurdle in my presumed enjoyment of such a remake, much as I expect the remakes previously named were tough for older generations to really get into. When all is said and done though, remakes are going to happen, and here are the top 5 remakes I expect to see between the years 2020 and 2040:" - Flickchart from Bookmarklet

Your Flickchart Top 20: Gift or Curse? | Flickchart: The Blog
"In fact, I’d be willing to bet that, for most Flickcharters, the only list that really matters is that one that stares you in the face every time you come to the site: your personal Top 20. It’s the list that’s on-screen every time you rank; either causing you to constantly question it, or reaffirm that yes, yes these are, in fact, my favorite movies of all-time. The cream of the crop. The films that will smack down any others they come against in your Flickchart rankings." - Flickchart from Bookmarklet

"Sure, there’s a Facebook movie coming soon, but there really isn’t much outside of that. A Farmville movie could become our generation’s “Of Mice and Men” or “The Grapes of Wrath,” themselves adaptations of the popular media of the day. The romantic comedy potential in Chatroulette is off the charts. Flickchart is no different, and not as some distasteful Sophie’s Choice parody. It’s been a while since we had a good frustrated-13-year-old-big-sister-yells-at-baby-brother-who-then-get’s-sucked-into-a-computer-and-then-she-has-to-get-him-back-before-mom-gets-home-movie. Kinda like a digital Labyrinth but without all the David Bowie crotch bulge." - Flickchart from Bookmarklet

Empirical Evidence that Flickchart is the Future of Film Criticism | Flickchart: The Blog
"The homepage of Flickchart states “If they’re all 5 star movies, which one is the best?” I put that to the test to determine just how effective their system is, and just how broken traditional rating methods are. I keep a running diary of all the films I watch, complete with date, film, rating, and check marks indicating whether it’s the first time I’ve seen the movie and if I watched it on TCM. There are very few other things to do with the “Latino Images in Film” spiral notebooks I won from TCM a while back. I’m almost positive Cantinflas would have done the same thing. I watch a movie, record it in the diary an hour later after it has sunk in, and then get it on Flickchart when I get the chance. The current book is at over 500 movies since July ‘09. Now, it would make sense that the relationship of the ratings I come up with after seeing a movie and their positions on Flickchart would match, right? Well, no." - Flickchart from Bookmarklet

"I love the purity of impulse involved in duels on Flickchart. Though I certainly can’t speak for everyone, I personally use the “first thought, best thought” principle when it comes to declaring a victor. You know, the method taught to us in school, to survive multiple choice tests you didn’t study for. This principle states that the first answer you think is right, is probably right. Similarly, whichever dueling movie inspires the greatest instinctive rush of affection – on a primal level, divorced from the paralysis of over-thinking – is the correct choice to win the duel. If you suddenly realize this principle is working too well, and Flickchart autopilot has resulted in an errant click, there’s always the Undo button to correct your mistakes." - Flickchart from Bookmarklet

First Impressions Are the Most Important | Flickchart: The Blog
"I’m sure it’s hard to believe, but movie fans haven’t always had the choice between seeing a movie at a theater or waiting to watch it on video. Much has already been made of Disney’s decision to limit its forthcoming Alice in Wonderland to just thirteen weeks of theatrical exhibition, before releasing it on Blu-ray and DVD. Young fans might not know it, but there was indeed a time when you could entirely forget about a movie between its theatrical debut and its home video release. (Then again, knowing the attention spans of some, this is probably still true.) I bring this up because the choice continues to evolve for most movie fans: Go to the theater or wait and see it at home? I’m not going to explore the pros or cons of either environment, but rather I’m interested this time in exploring how where we see a movie impacts our feelings about that movie." - Flickchart from Bookmarklet

"Just when you thought it was safe to head back to the Flickchart Blog, another Reel Rumbles is here to determine once and for all what is scarier: a murderous great white shark on the loose in a small fishing village or a lone member of a mysterious alien race haunting the jungles of Central America? Separated by twelve years and undeniable advancements in special effects, this looks, on paper, to be a match for the ages. But is it really that close? Does testosterone-fueled action and a Die Hard pedigree trump master filmmaking and deep characterization? Read on and find out in Jaws vs. Predator." - Flickchart from Bookmarklet

Ripping me in two. A film that was designed for mass appeal that also weaves game theory into the plot, or multi-level philosophical masterpiece. I think I'm going with Fight Club, but I'm not sure. - Jimminy, CoG of FF
Dark Knight. - Derrick
Ouf.. Fight Club I was more in awe at the time than I was with Dark Knight, but both very good movies. - Zu from AOD
Fight Club was more of a life-changing piece, as with Matrix and American Beauty, giving you a rise in acting, thinking differently, as Batman was more living the experience of the situations people were living, following them, and not some social standing issuer, but that can be alternatively viewed. - Zu from AOD
Just so you know my position on this debate: Fight Club is currently my #7. Dark Knight is currently my #142. :) - Nathan Chase
I watched Fight Club and waited to be amazed in the way that everyone else claimed to be amazed. I'm still waiting. I like it, don't get me wrong, but it DIDN'T CHANGE MY LIFE. - Derrick
Fight Club. Dark Knight was a cool movie, but it didn't move me in any way. - Rah-PM 2012
Well, now out of curiosity, you Fight Club fans, can you explain to me what it is about the movie that makes you love it so? Not trolling, just...not seeing it. *waits patiently* - Derrick
Derrick, it's the philosophical messages that are hidden in the film. Jack spent his life collecting items that he never had time to enjoy, just because that's the way society said we should act - Jimminy, CoG of FF
No, Jimminy, I got that. Fight Club came out when I was in the middle of film school and most of my classmates saw the film three, four, five times. We examined it, picked it apart, etc. I saw it, and I liked it, but...*shrug* I guess I just don't see what everyone else does. - Derrick
I just found it inspiring. The idea of giving up someone elses ideals, and to just embrace every second you're given because it could be your last. Though I find the book much more appealing. - Jimminy, CoG of FF
When I listened to that, for the mental environment I had, was when I was 16 years old. We so started our own Fight Club, and I'm a skinny w/ glasses pal. We were amazed by the ideas transgressed, how the twisted storyline and sense of being with Tyler being given hot tips and knowledge. Having watched that film empowered us, that's how I saw it as a teenager, the frenzy didn't take too... more... - Zu from AOD
Clearly, I'm just an old man. - Derrick
User experience I suppose, I see 'loving a movie' as meaning it changed something in me, ideas, purpose, dreams, attitudes, it's when there's so much positive "conceptualized uploading" that I feel the movie really was enjoyable, because of the "Movie Mind-Share" number of items that are new to other visualized projects. Thanks for making me think of that Derrick, interesting topic. - Zu from AOD
I think it's interesting that it kind of...unlocked all of these things in people and got them to think. My disconnect stems from seeing that I think I'd already thought about a lot of these things, had experienced a lot to see things from my own skewed point of view. Some people go through life from A to B to C, graduate college, get married, have kids, etc. I think any time one is... more... - Derrick
Fight Club. To be honest, I think I like it mostly just because of all the memorable lines. - Victor Ganata from iPod
That's freaky, since I saw the FriendFeed convergence video, I now hear you speak/talk at the same time when I read your stuff. That's how powerful it is to see people for so much time without a certain type of data. (I quote the pause you did with "it kind of... unlocked" hehehe) - Zu from AOD
Heh. I very much write/talk in the same voice. I will give Fight Club kudos for having some eye candy and I don't even like Brad Pitt. - Derrick
8) There you go, that's my man hehe, think of Bob. He was an interesting character for the story. - Zu from AOD
It's on Blu-ray and I'll pick it up cheap. I like Fincher...people don't really talk about Zodiac but I really, really liked it. - Derrick
Derrick, for me FIGHT CLUB has a number of really great elements: the really inventive use of CG for some shots (trashcan, apartment explosion - see http://www.digitalpostproduction.com/Htm...), the great usage of well-cast actors (Helena Bonham Carter, Meat Loaf, Ed Norton, Brad Pitt, Jared Leto as the "beautiful face"), the cool twist you could have seen coming... more... - Nathan Chase
It could be that most of us watched it at a key point in our lives. I was still pretty young. It had an effect on my perspective about what we think is important in life. It's one of the few movies where I was actually surprised by the twist. There are too many specifics to go into. Bob. Destroying something beautiful. The twisted romantic relationship. The leadership qualities illustrated by Tyler sheerly by the passion of his ideas. - Rah-PM 2012
Also, what Nathan said. I remembered Ed Norton from American History X, but he became one of my fav actors after this movie. I actually didn't like Brad much, but this movie changed my opinion of him as well. - Rah-PM 2012
I hear all of these things and they make me want to like Fight Club more than I do. I just don't. Oh well. - Derrick
One last reason I love FIGHT CLUB? The Dust Brothers. What a soundtrack. I keep hoping they'll do another feature film score, cause like John Williams did for STAR WARS, the soundtrack was a huge part of what makes FIGHT CLUB stick in your mind. The music is just so well fit to the picture. - Nathan Chase
I do like the music. The Dust Bros. are the business. *raises white flag* - Derrick

I hafta say, though, not a single non-English film in there? And only one non-American (Shaun of the Dead). I've got to be skeptical about that. Is the algorithm tweaked to account for films that haven't been ranked by that many people, but are highly ranked by everyone who has ranked it? - Jandy
Jandy, this isn't a statement about the quality of the films so much as the users of flikchart; these are the best loved films as determined by theses users; rotten tomatoes would have a different list based on the people that it uses as data for the system - RAPatton from iPhone
That's a good point, RAP. I just think it's the downfall of lists created based on majority vote - it's necessarily biased toward films that most people have seen. It is interesting to see Flickchart's fanboy bias, though - lots of comic book and geek films on there. - Jandy
I would think that for the most part the films would follow the box office, indexed for inflation and then factored by the box office demographics. The interesting ones would be the ones that did well on DVD, but not at the BO, and trying to divine why. - RAPatton from iPhone
It's accurate in that it's a true reflection of the users' rankings, where the films fall on their lists, and how prolific a user they are. The more each user ranks, the more accurate each user's list becomes. If more people highly ranked indie films, foreign films, etc. and were also prolific users of Flickchart, those film's rankings would rise higher in the aggregate. - Nathan Chase
My top movie of the decade is my favourite movie ever (so far); Sunshine was awesome in the true sense of the word. I agree with Memento, Children of Men and The Departed (which were 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively on my top 20 of the 2000s). I thought the likes of The Incredibles were just OK. Kill Bill didn't impress me and the Lord of the Ring's were too much for me - edit them to half the length and they would be a lot higher in my charts. - Kol Tregaskes
Iron Man is the best superhero movie so far and Batman Begins is the best Batman movie so I don't agree Dark Knight should be anywhere near the top spot. It was very good but not a top 20 movie, the only parts I liked from the movie were when Heath Ledger was on screen. I really like Christian Bale but he over-the-top husky Batman voice was too much and too comically. - Kol Tregaskes
Shame the Million Dollar Baby didn't reach the top 20 and I loved Saw (only the first one though). And no Pirates of the Caribbean's? Here's my top 20 of the noughties: http://www.flickchart.com/Charts... - Kol Tregaskes
dark knight was good because it doesnt rely on batman as the main part of the movie.. if they had problems getting the rights for batman, this still would of made a good film i think...` - Terry O'Fee
Would the Joker be included in the rights of Batman though? So if they didn't get the rights to Batman they wouldn't get the Joker? Or are they separate. If there was no Batman then the Joker would still need a good guy to fight. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
joker yes, but you know what i mean? heath playing an equally mad psychotic guy?? - Terry O'Fee
OK. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
My top twenty of the 2000s, according to Flickchart right now: 20) Dogville, 19) Catch Me If You Can, 18) Ocean's Eleven, 17) Garden State, 16) City of God, 15) Up in the Air, 14) The Incredibles, 13) 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days, 12) Amelie, 11) Wall-E, 10) Inglourious Basterds, 9) Hot Fuzz, 8) Kill Bill Vol. 1, 7) Lost in Translation, 6) The Royal Tenenbaums, 5) Brick, 4) O Brother... more... - Jandy
Jandy, Ocean's Eleven is a good shout. That should be higher on my list. Wall-E was great too. And I really liked Brick, more people need to watch that. - Kol Tregaskes
best actor Lager - Robi
