"The body is a complex machine. While we like to think that when we work out we'll immediately feel and look better, it's not always that simple. A lot happens in your body when you first start working out, and the longer you work out the less things change. To get a grasp on what's going on, I spoke with Brian Parr from the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of South Carolina Aiken, and Dr. Carly Stewart, Medical Expert at Money Crashers Personal Finance. Here's what you can expect, what's happening, and how you can use that knowledge to improve your workout routine."

"Apparently though for some, and it's mostly men, Naked Yoga classes are very popular. Some classes are co-ed, but most are male-only, and are common in gay communities. Studios that offer naked yoga can be found in cities such as Boston, San Francisco, L.A., and Salt Lake City."

That was sooo London or the UK at least for the most part, I recognised the architecture, but a few looked completely foreign, like those ruins, couldn't suss their locations, unless they too are in the UK somewhere?

1) The effort it takes to jump rope for 10 minutes is the equivalent of running a mile in eight minutes. ~ 2) One hour of rope skipping will burn 1,300 calories. ~ 3) According to the British Rope Skipping Association, 10 minutes of skipping can have the same health benefits as a 45-minute run.

***Skipping is a weightbearing exercise so can help in improving bone density, thus helping stave off osteoporosis.*** Women please take note of this! Please make sure your calcium intake is good and get your levels checked if you can and take supplements as needed! My cousin had poor intake during her adult life, when she got old she suffered horribly, please look after yourselves!
- Halil
I've been seeing a lot of information lately that calcium supplements may not be recommended, so that's definitely an "ask your doctor" sort of thing at this point.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I can believe that, but that's why I said as needed, but dietary calcium isn't that hard these days, even for veggies, you have broccoli, tofu, chickpeas, soy milk and loads of veggies sources.

So, is it better to eat wait +1hr then exercise or exercise then eat? I haven't had brekkie yet, should I go on my treadmill now after 2 coffees or eat, wait +1hr then go on it? Does it matter?
I used to eat before exercising, but now I eat after. Eating before, I was sluggish and had cramps depending on what I ate. Waiting for digestion made no sense to me either, since it just wasted time. Besides, after exercising was hungry again. Still, I don't think there's one blanket answer. We all have different metabolism and reactions to hunger.
- Anika
Thanks Anika, that makes loads of sense, if you eat, then exercise you're bound to get peckish, so better to eat afterwards, I don't really want to waste time eating/waiting either, so think I'll jump on it now.
- Halil
Before I go out on my bike I try to have a cereal bar and to drink some water. I also take a bottle out with me. Barry was very persuasive in the need to drink, drink, drink. Then I eat when I come back.
- Heleninstitches
I usually eat after exercising because I tend to eat less than if I eat, wait, and then exercise.
- imabonehead
I feel like crap if I run out of fuel during exercise, but if I had a late meal the day before I can go for many hours in the morning without eating.
- Eivind
From my experience it's good to "get your body going" in the morning before doing hard exercise. Could be just a glass of buttermilk mixed with vitamin juice etc., but not just coffee. When I recall the recommendations my dad got for his marathons, it's good to give your body something light and easy to burn for the way. But a full tummy sure is bad for training. And yes, of course. We're all different.
- esther
I never eat before my morning treadmill walk. I usually walk 30 min. Just water. EDIT. Also I only have about 6 ounces of coffee 30min before walking, just enough to wake up.

When I first started training I would have absolute crash moments. Little did I know it was the pre-diabetes. My trainer told me to have a small amount of protein prior to my workout. Either a piece of peanut butter toast or simply a glass of milk. You need to see how your body reacts to exercise.
- Janet:#TeamMonique
I didn't in the end, figured I should treadmill 1 day and rest the next and build myself up, rather than over exert myself.
- Halil
It's going to depend largely on what kind of exercise you're doing too. If you're just going to walk a little, don't bother worrying about when you eat. If you're going to be anything that gets your heart rate up, you really ought to have an energy-giving meal about 2 hours beforehand. This provides you with adequate protein and carbs but gives enough time for digestion to begin so that...

I'm trying to do a mini walk (around the block at a quick pace ~5-10 mins) 1 day before going on treadmill for ~10 mins and just walk 1 day. I haven't actually started to jog yet, trying to build up myself for that so I don't keel over having a heart attack in the middle of the street! Thanks for that advice though about a post protein snack.
- Halil
It's probably the distance between your footfalls or something like that.
- Anika
well, Mo said I shouldn't obsess about calorie burns, so now that I can't actually measure my distance with this, it means I can just concentrate on improving my fitness and losing my winter warmer! Thanks Anika.

Those too...although my knees ain't what the used to be and dislike lunges very much
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
I did a three lunges one day last week -- just THREE! -- and was sore for two days after. I need to do more lunges. And squats too.

Dude my ass is killing me after a 30 minute class with squats, lunges and all done on a Bosu ball

However, losing weight can be surprisingly difficult. In fact, national health surveys show Americans in general are getting fatter. Sure, regular runners should be ahead of the pack, but many are still losing the weight-gain war.

"Going to the gym may not be enough to keep off the pounds if you drive to work. That’s the result of a study published recently in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Bike commuters gain less weight than car commuters, an Australian study found. Image: Bikes Belong According to an Australian research team, active commuting is an effective defense against gaining weight. Among a sample of 822 Australian adults tracked over four years, people who walked or biked to work gained about two pounds less, on average, than daily car commuters. Lead researcher Takemi Sugiyama, a behavioral epidemiologist at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, said it may be difficult for people who drive to work to find the extra time to devote to exercise. “In order to achieve the level of physical activity needed to prevent weight gain, it may be more realistic to accumulate physical activity through active transport, rather than adding exercise to weekly leisure-time routines,” she...

:( I just went through this -- hope you feel better soon. What worked for me was getting some insoles and new shoes.
- Stephen Mack #TeamMomo
Yeah I just bought new shoes and I think they are part of the problem.

I can't say enough for the right arch supports and for orthotics. Recently thought I was gonna be in for another major deal, but two days in gel arch supports ended lantar fasciitis after a couple weeks.

Yeah my plan today is to head back to the running shop and have them take a look again at my old shoes and compare the new ones and let them know I haven't had any pain in three years of running and now I do after running in my new kicks only 2 times.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
Do you feel like it prevents you from doing your best? Or as long as you get out there, it's fine?
- Shevonne
I may slow my pace a bit just to accommodate my sore muscles and to avoid a strain but for me my best is getting out there and moving whether it's fast or not.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
Thanks. I'm super sore today (especially in the buttocks and back of my thighs), so was worried that I wouldn't be able to run.
- Shevonne
And to be honest, I switch between weight training and running and I'm finding that weight training one day and running the next helps my muscles recover better/faster. I still take complete rest days (no cardio/weights at all) here and there.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
I think that's what I'm doing wrong. I run, and then I do circuit training. I think I need to do that...switch it up
- Shevonne
I do a light day of cardio (same length as usual just not as intense) to get the blood and lactic acid flowing and lots of water.
- SteVe C
You apparently set up a weekly schedule of workouts, and how much money you want to put on the table. Then people who meet their schedule divide up the money from the pool of those who didn't work out that week. (You can change your schedule on a weekly basis.) To qualify, you have to check into a gym, or use their smart phone app to measure your workout.

"There’s no two ways about it: Running hills sucks. But while it makes you huff and puff like no other, it’s a quick way to improve your race performance, say local running coaches Julie Sapper and Lisa Reichmann of Run Farther and Faster. Hill sprints “help strengthen your legs and improve your speed,” they explain. Plus running sprints uphill actually put less impact on your joints than running on flat surfaces. We’re in the heart of spring race reason, so it’s likely that your training regimen calls for some midweek speed work. Next time, try this hills sprint workout whipped up by Sapper and Reichmann."

"Many of us would probably agree that women have done some amazing things while wearing high heels: Holding high-level political offices, running corporations, even deadlifting big weights, which you will see in a second. While heels undoubtedly can be visually appealing, and can simultaneously give an air of sexuality and power, what exactly is happening to the feet, ankles, shins and calves of the wearer? Let's see what the research says"

Conclusion of study cited in the blog post: "After 10 weeks, both groups of runners received a follow-up M.R.I. There was no evidence of injuries to or changes in the tissues of the lower leg, like the Achilles’ tendon, among any of the runners. But more than half of the runners wearing the minimalist shoes now showed early signs of bone injuries in their feet."

Yeah, I was kind of afraid of that. I know when I just walk bare-footed, my foot bones really hurt. Paving is the issue, I'm sure. Did these people limit their running to dirt roads and meadows?
- Spidra Webster
I've had really good luck with them, but I've also been very cautious. The one injury I've gotten was actually just walking around Tokyo and misstepping on an uneven sidewalk. But like most things, YMMV.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Are you using them for running or walking, Jennifer?
- Spidra Webster
I've mostly used them for walking, but have done a bit of running as well. They made a huge difference in how comfortable running was for me - basically, it hurts too much to run with traditional shoes for more than a very short time. I had to switch out from the 'toe shoe' style (one toe didn't like it,) to Merrill's version. It uses the same Vibram sole, just without the toe separation. There's still lots of room for your toes to move around though.
- Jennifer Dittrich
Oh! I didn't know about this non-toe version. That might work better for me, since my toes never fit toe socks, much less toe shoes.
- Royce's favorite Anna
Basically, you'd just look for the ones labeled 'barefoot' (I think most major brands have something like that.) These are the current version of the shoes I have: http://www.rei.com/product...
- Jennifer Dittrich
I've got the men's version, I think, of what Jennifer has and I like mine. I just use them for walking, though.

PROJECT: Let's Get Tamara To Her Fundraising Goal -- 66% there, she needs $755 more by May 1st. She's running a FULL MARATHON to raise money for cancer research. EDIT: 100%!!!!!!!!! WE DID IT! THANK YOU FRIENDFEED! - http://pages.teamintraining.org/ocie...
Hey beautiful FriendFeeders, Tam is running a FULL MARATHON to raise money for cancer research. But if she doesn't hit her $2,200 goal by May 1st, she can't run and she owes the difference to Team in Training. She's so supportive and loyal and has helped out many of us here, so let's make sure she reaches her goal! Many thanks to those of you who have already donated. Any bright ideas for how we can get her the rest of the way there? http://pages.teamintraining.org/ocie...

I'm at 78%. $475 to go!! Thanks so much, FFers. I love you guys. The donations are awesome and definitely make me and my cause feel supported, but that's not the reason I said I love you. When anyone is in need, whether it be because they've had a bad day, lost a loved one, down on their luck or whatever, this great group of people always rally to comfort and support each other with no expectations in return. Each of you are a gift to this community and I'm glad to be a part of it.

I promise not to let you down and give my all to running this race for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We're funding a cure and that's exciting. Thank you all, again. <3
- Tamara J.
WOW! That is amazing. <3 You go on with your bad self, Tam! You are doing something wonderful and it's hard to not want to support that in some way. :)
