People gripe at me for solo hiking but I prefer it over being with others (though I'd kick that habit for you and you only :). There's something nice about just being in your own head while you traverse the landscape. Y'know?

I like hiking with company, but being alone makes it easier to focus on birds, the landscape, etc.

I have mixed feelings about hiking with others. I enjoy the company, but if there is a mismatch of hiking ability or style, it can be awkward. I stop and take a lot of photos, which slows me down a lot. I don't like to irritate people with all my stopping, so hiking alone is nice in that regard. Before the bear charging me in Oregon, I almost always hiked alone. Now I get nervous if I am hiking alone on little-used trails. Dan asked me to climb Mummy mountain with him tomorrow, but I didn't feel up to a 14-16 mile hike, so I declined. Six miles feels good for tomorrow. John, company is nice, but it's hard for me to find partners outside of my coworkers. I have signed up for my first organized group hike next Friday- I'm excited! I'll be sure to report back to y'all on how hiking with total strangers went. :D

Well now I want to go hiking tomorrow too. Joshua Tree? Only got to do the whirlwind tour last month. Maybe just someplace up in Griffith Park though. Hmmm...

Do eet! It's so nice to get out on the trail and just leave all the city stuff behind.
