Why is Twitter shutting down in 2012? - Steve Rubel
Plus it will have lots more (Google) Services added to it :-) - Martin Rix (Mrrix32)
@Steve I don't think it means Twitter is shutting down. I think it means Twitter will bar FriendFeed from using its feed ;-) - Rubin Sfadj

Hilarious - may all come to pass before 2018. - Todd McKinney
Love it. But 2018? I'd except to be able to get Friend.com directly through the HUD in my flying car by then... Only silversurfers (like us) would still use "web browsers" in 2018. - Tony Ruscoe

Hey, I just noticed I'm in the screenshot. :D @Paul: ? What's backwards, where? - Voyagerfan5761
Actually, it missed one important thing - a HUGE ad, taking up the top half of the screen, for a substance that is just as effective as Viagra (which was banned in 2011). - Ontario Emperor

One thing they got wrong: by 2012, Paul will have started his own country southwest of Alaska on an artificial island. It'll be called Free Festivusland, and it'll get the top-level domain “ff”. FriendFeed will then be http://ff/ — no dots or coms or nets or orgs. - Amit Patel

Weird, isn't working for me either... - Jorge Escobar
Jorge: Your FriendFeed profile is configed to take in FF links through the feedbuster thingy, so you won't get this behavior. If you use FF's built-in handling of Google Reader shared items, it'll work. - Brett Slatkin

I got this working with Google Reader but it was not all that easy to find the URL for sharing. Even with the hint from FF, I had to poke around in Google Reader to locate the right address. Maybe a small usability point here but it could make a difference in use of this with Google Reader. - Hans Eisenman

@Jorge - Whoops, sorry 'bout that. I'm working on getting feed-buster to play nice with PSHB :). - Ivan Zuzak
@Brett - I'm actually working on porting feedbuster to PSHB using superfeedr and some of the open-source code from the reference hub implementation. I've exchanged a few e-mail with Julien (from Superfeedr) about the larger issue behind this - RSS/ATOM/PSHB architecture does not support end-user defined insertion of feed processing services (e.g. feed-buster) into the flow of delivering... more... - Ivan Zuzak
Hey Ivan! That sounds like a great topic to research. Would love to have a wiki page devoted to this concept. The idea of composition and filtering works like this: 1) Feedbuster provides a virtual feed which advertises itself as a Hub, 2) User adds the "busted" URL to FriendFeed, 3) FriendFeed requests a subscription for the feed from Feedbuster, 4) feedbuster pulls the original feed,... more... - Brett Slatkin
Another solution is to enable callbacks in the filters themselves, like we saw yesterday with webhooks. Say you have a filter at http://myfilter.com/subscri.... and you want to receive notifications on http://final_client.com. You would then provide the following url to the hub : http://myfilter.com/subscri... The filter would then have to 1: redirect... more... - Julien
@Brett - thanks! I'm glad you think there's something *there*. I'm definitely up for writing a wiki for the concept. :) Also, what you outlined is actually exactly what my idea is for the new feed-buster prototype and what I'm in the process of implementing. Though, what I was trying to stress is - doesn't it seem like a lot of overhead for a conceptually simple thing? Developing a... more... - Ivan Zuzak
I think it would be a reasonable extension to the protocol, but one of our goals here is to keep the core protocol as simple as possible. I'm working on a way to formalize these protocol extensions and keep a catalog of them, as well as discovery. - Brett Slatkin
@Julien - that's a cool idea - hooks-within-hooks. So, in case of FriendFeed and feedbuster, what would be the callback (http://final_client.com/) where the notifications would be sent? Is it the Friendfeed URL for receiving PSHB notifications? - Ivan Zuzak
Hum, that is not very clear to me what you're trying to do. Do you want to post some content to friendfeed through feedbuster? - Julien
@Julien - I'm sorry, let me clarify. Let's say a FF user wants to use feed-buster as a filter in the way you described - she wants to import a feedbuster-processed feed into FriendFeed with pshb support. In order to import a feed, FF asks the user to enter the feed URL, and my question was - what would that full URL be? - Ivan Zuzak
hum... it should be something like http://feedbuster.com/... In this case you wouldn't need the callback, because you can't "control" FF's abililty to receive pings. However, if you add the <atom rel="hub"> link at the top of this generated feed, FF should take that into account and fetch the content right after they receive a notification. (please let's continue this chat somewhere else, since I always forget to come here;)) - Julien
the name itself, PubSubHubbub, triggered my interest. I kind of understood it was about pulling not pushing (or vice-versa) but stayed pretty much at the doorstep. I'm eager to learn more about it though. - lelapin
@Julien - agreed. Let's continue this off FF. - Ivan Zuzak

World’s Biggest Cave Discovered in Vietnam
World’s Biggest Cave Discovered in Vietnam
Show all
"Caves are cavernous and scary places, filled with bats, bottomless pits, and other natural mysteries. In Vietnam, some brave explorers have discovered and mapped the world’s biggest cave. The Son Doong cave is 262 feet wide throughout most of the passage, and features a 1.6 mile long river and 230 feet stalagmites. For a couple of miles of the passage, the cave measures 460 feet wide. A local farmer discovered the cave and led the joint British and Vietnamese exploration team in their April expedition. The team mapping the cave got as far as a 46 foot high wall before they were stymied. “The second team that went in got flooded out,” Adam Spillane, a member of the British Cave Research Association expedition that explored the limestone cavern, said. “We’re going back next year to climb that wall and explore the cave further.” The previous record-holder, Deer Cave on the Malaysian island of Borneo, is 300 feet wide, but it is much shorter than Son Doong. The Vietnamese terrain, which... more... - vijay from Bookmarklet

The ‘Coffin Corner’ and a ‘Mesoscale’ Maw - http://trueslant.com/milesob...
The ‘Coffin Corner’ and a ‘Mesoscale’ Maw
The ‘Coffin Corner’ and a ‘Mesoscale’ Maw
"The doomed Airbus A-330-200 was flying ever so close to its maximum altitude – in a zone pilots call the “Coffin Corner”. It refers to the edge of so-called “flight envelope” of an aircraft. At this altitude, the air is much thinner and that significantly narrows the swath of speed at which the airplane can safely operate. They will stop flying (stall) at a much higher speed (true airspeed) than they would on approach to an airport at sea level. At the other end of the safe speed spectrum is the sound barrier. The wings on an airliner like the A-330 are not designed to break the speed of sound. So you see the squeeze play as a plane flies toward the Coffin Corner: the margin between the between the high and low speed limits gets thinner and thinner (along with the air). Matter of fact, given its estimated weight, altitude and the outside air temperature (which also affects air density), AF 447 was flying through the eye of a speed needle only about 25 knots (28 mph) wide." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
wow - great read there paul, thx! - Chris Heath
such a puzzle. the thing is, the A330 flight computer should "know" when the aircraft is approaching the "Coffin Corner." it is designed to keep the plane from getting into trouble. though it looks like the last ACARS messages from the plane are basically the flight computers saying they are confused, could a human please drive now (autopilot off, autothrottle off, switch to Alternate Law). - Karim

the "Coffin Corner" on a 747: http://digital-nomad.com/gallery... airspeed on the left, altitude on the right. the red/purple bricks starting at 288 knots airspeed & going up indicate the beginning of Mach Critical, where the airflow gets disrupted because the plane is moving too fast. the yellow line starting at 258 kts & going down is the stall speed, where the... more... - Karim
or rather the computer has to keep the airspeed between the two points. :-) if there's a small buffet margin of a few knots (difference between the Mach buffet speed and the stall buffet speed), the greater the chances that a manuever will get the plane into trouble. turning the plane can reduce the airspeed (thus causing it to stall), or pitching the nose down can increase the airspeed (thus causing a "Mach tuck" and pointing the nose down even more...) - Karim
Karim, are you sure that photo is from a 747? Mach .86 at that altitude is 500kts, not 275. That's 275m/s, not knots, which makes the "coffin corner" 60kts, not 30. - Gabe
Gabe, i was assuming the speed was CAS. (does an EFIS display meters/sec.?) the calculator here http://www.newbyte.co.il/calc... shows that, for an altitude of 38,000 ft., temp. of -38 C, and speed of Mach .86, that results in a Calibrated Air Speed (CAS) of 275. - Karim
UAFlt 175 , an alleged 767, according to the video evidence, appeared to travel over 500 mph @ 700 ft., and was not dive-bombing. According to Boeing, that couldn't be. I'd like opinion of pilots on this photo http://www.thewebfairy.com/ the background is a still from a video allegedly taken from Battery Park by M. Hezarkhani, and promoted in various media. - Marg Uerite
i am so relieved to find a thread full of savvy and tech interested pilots. - Marg Uerite
Marg, at 700ft the speed of sound is 764mph, so a plane going Mach .86 could be going 660mph. Of course few jets have the thrust to sustain flight at that height and speed for very long, but you could dive from altitude to build up a speed of over 660mph (your wings probably wouldn't fall off until over 700mph) and go for quite a ways at level flight before drag slowed you down to 500mph. - Gabe
I was not aware that a 767 was able to break the sound barrier. Thank you for your answer that is very helpful. The "plane" in the vids appear to come in level, from at least a mile out. Part of the problem is that different vids show different trajectories. One vid *does show a dive, but does not match the others. http://killtown.911review.org/2nd-hit... - Marg Uerite
No, I never said a 767 could break the sound barrier. It can dive at 91% of the speed of sound, which near sea level is pretty fast. Once it comes out of that dive, it would cover a mile in maybe 10 seconds. - Gabe
Thanks, Gabe. - Marg Uerite

Lew - is healthcare a right? - Robert J Taylor
I ask because in 2004/5 I had no debt until my family suffered 3 hospitalizations. That's when I left being an independent contractor to join a traditional company with benefits. If not the inability for the self-employed to obtain health benefits I'd likely still be independent. - Robert J Taylor
I thought I could easily find some hard facts about the cost of pharmaceuticals in the US vs the cost in other countries. I was wrong. Looks like I will have to go beyond simple Google searches. My suspicion is that US patients fund a disproportionate amount of the R&D for drug development that benefits the entire world. That would be great if we could afford it, but it looks like we can not. - Chip Ramsey
robot, i don't think as a society we are going to sit by and let people die. we don't do it today. emergency rooms are open to anyone. it just is a horrible system that creates higher cost last ditch effort care. and, the personal crisis you discuss is a good example of how resource distortions arise due to the fear of healthcare costs. there has to be a better way. - lew
the US healthcare system is in sad shape yet so many people don't even realize it because they haven't been personally affected by it. hopefully we can turn it around before it gets too much worse. i cringe every time i hear someone say "blah blah blah Socialized Medicine, never!" - Phil Maxwell
The growth of interest payments is not in our national interest. - Mike Seidle
mike, like lew said in the post - the interest is a reflection of the growing costs - cut the costs down and the interest goes down too - Chris Heath
Good link about US healthcare expenses: http://www.nchc.org/facts... - Chip Ramsey
Look at healthcare in places where it has been socialized. Canada, UK, etc. Is their level of care acceptable? Is it acceptable to lose all ability to choose which treatments you are going to receive? If you hand healthcare over to the government, none of us (except the "elites" and those who work for the government) will receive an acceptable level of care. - Stephen M. Otto
healthcare is not a right. Its a choice. If you get health insurance from your employer thats money that they are not paying you. Just like the 7 to 8% they pay to Social Insecurity and Medicare is more money that employers are shelling out that you don't see. Many people who live in New York find that paying over $1,000 a month for family coverage simply is not doable. The programs for lower income people cap out way too low. - Matt Ellsworth

About time! What the heck is DirecTV waiting for with their Internet enabled devices? @boxee is the closest thing i can find to a complete package. i'm projecting a 100" image... I want an appropriate interface, I want my media, and I demand social integration! - Jason Nelson
DirecTV seems to have been all but paralyzed by their on-again/off-again relationship with TiVo and concern over folks ripping video. I'll bet they're getting the same sort of pressure from the networks that led to the Hulu-Boxee Conflict of 2009. It's easy to build an internet TV platform when don't have to deal with folks with content. - Ken Sheppardson
I heard DirecTV and TiVo made up and are seeing each other again. - Josh Haley
Ken Sheppardson: Perhaps. Me thinks DirecTV is distracted with gee wiz features. I also wonder if some of DirecTV's challenges are a side effect of http://www.dbstalk.com/forumdi.... The streaming of DVR programming to PC is nifty, but if I'm already at home, why do I want to use my computer to watch TV? That's what the displays in my living room, bedroom and kitchen are for! What I really want to do is leverage my investment in AV equipment. The set-top is a computer! - Jason Nelson
IIRC, the last and only DirecTV TiVo-powered HD device was the HR10-250, which came out in the spring 2004. Last summer they announced they were back together with TiVo, and that they'd have new devices in the second half of 2009. That's 5 years between devices. BTW, in 1/2006 DirecTV announced a partnership with Microsoft to bring DirecTV to the HTPC. In 12/2008 after many demos and delays, DirecTV pulled the plug on their HTPC tuner. I have no idea what they're planning these days, nor do I think they do. - Ken Sheppardson
Jason: Oh, no... you're not going to get me to go down the HTPC vs. set top box rabbit hole :-) Personally, I don't care how big the box under/next to my TV happens to be, who makes it, or what you call it. I just want local and basic cable network shows on demand, HD sports, HD first run movies, a streaming movie library ala Netflix, any and all video and pictures I've shot myself all available on whichever screens I choose using a single remote to navigate a single, unified UI. First one there wins. - Ken Sheppardson
Ken: I know, I know. But if we don't fall down the rabbit hole from time to time, #boxee and ilk won't receive the promotion and encouragement they deserve. That means if we're not building our own tools, we'll have to wait around longer, right? :-) - Jason Nelson
Roland Reinhart: Agreed on the DirecTV UI over FiOS. Not all upside, though. Whenever DirecTV rolls out an update, the family groans. They simply don't have the curiosity to invest their time in exploring new features until their peers start talking about it. It makes me think of Facebook. For new players, while they don't have the cash flow from legacy customers, they have more freedom to innovate. If they can survive, that's good for us until we move on to the next big thing. - Jason Nelson
Ian D. Nock: Don't you think we're moving toward a blend of lean back and lean forward? If I could interact with what's on TV on my laptop, that would be an advertising coup. Why should I have to use Google to try and search for what I'm thinking when I can see it on the large scree (aka TV) in front of me? For example, if you're watching a home improvement show on TLC, you could copy... more... - Jason Nelson

Eye-Fi to offer direct to YouTube video uploads over WiFi
"Eye-Fi, the makers of the SD cards that fit in your current digital cameras and connect over WiFi to upload pictures without connecting to your computer, announced a new move to offer direct to YouTube video uploads today. The new technology hasn't yet been released, but Eye-Fi will be previewing the technology at CES 2009. Once the technology is released, those interested will be able to buy Eye-Fi SD cards for their digital cameras and upload both photos and videos over WiFi without connecting the device to their computers. Eye-Fi intends to make the technology HD video compatible so that HD videos can be uploaded directly to YouTube over an active WiFi connection. Bill are you going to offer a competitive service? - Steve Gillmor
I think the goal is a sustainable real-time content publishing system of some sort. RSS + ping networks don't get the job done currently. It's easy to create a one-off ping/poll system for a small number of sources, with low latency, much more difficult to do so for a large number. There is no system now that I'm aware of that directly addresses this particular issue. SUP and XMPP are interesting, but nor deployed in a full system yet. - mikepk
mikepk you move from not in google's economic interest to innovators dilemma to not doable technically. Microsoft is licking its chops. google is silent for a reason - Steve Gillmor
Steve, I think the reason that Google is silent might be more that it's a Sunday after the holidays. I pointed some people at Google to this. - Matt Cutts
Steve, innovator's dilemma is the only point I made, I never said it wasn't technically doable. :) The ironiy of the innovator's dilemma is that it *is* in Google's long term economic interest. The central argument is that internal pressure keeps a company from exploring disruptive technologies because they must focus on their short term economic interest above their long term. - mikepk
Also, it's just a "feeling" that I have that google's internal priorities are re-aligning to driving ad-revenue above other pursuits. The pressure on Google is steadily increasing since wall street expects growth. If they miss their growth targets for a quarter it will dramatically increase this pressure. I could be *totally* wrong and only time will tell. - mikepk
matt cutts thx for some real response. I've always liked Feedburner, but in the age of realtime it's hopelessly bad news for routing info around the viral network. Have someone contact me to chat on NewsGang Live tomorrow 1PM PDT - Steve Gillmor

Under the "Publicize" tab, do you have the PingShot feature activated? I think turning on pinging might be the issue in some of these cases. - Matt Cutts
Whether Steve solves his problem or not, I think we need an open source "feed proxy" that could at least give our feeds stats, cache and some kind of throttling. - Panayotis Vryonis
Matt forwarded to Techcrunch engineering. will find out. thx. - Steve Gillmor
Matt Cutts: PingShot was turned on late on Jan 1. - Steve Gillmor
Steve: I've been talking to the FB folks and they're checking into this. They were able to repeat it with TechCrunch IT (not TechCrunch), so they're checking on it. Unfortunately, I'm doing an orientation for a new Google engineer at 1pm, so I won't be able to dial into the chatroom for NewsGang, but people are looking at it on this side. - Matt Cutts

Stuff is not salvation, Anna Quindlen (http://www.newsweek.com/id...) vs. the Wii Christmas kids (http://www.pwnordie.com/videos...). Not sure who wins.

Wii Christmas kids was great, it reminds me of when I got my original Nintendo. I freaked out! I don't think my parents had a video camera though. - Dan Fitek
The Quindlen article is hard to read, because a lot of it is true. I change handsets every 12-months, but I'm a geek. How can a geek exist without gadgets? Ugh. - Christopher J. Utley

Sell Benefits Not Features - http://www.chrisbrogan.com/sell-be...
"Far too often, I hear social media enthusiasts talking about the software from the perspective of its features, but we’ve already proven that features don’t trump benefits. Twitter has fewer features than Pownce and Jaiku, and yet, we’re all on Twitter." Amen! - Brad Coy
Focusing on benefits rather than features will always win in the marketplace, whether it''s digital or bricks and mortar. You could add the original iPod to this list. - Paul M. Banas
When showing friends a new webapp, fequently I get the response "that's nice, but what's it do for me?" - Chris Rogers
The greatest benefit you could provide me is a simple solution, no matter what it is. I would add the Apple store to the list. - Brad Coy

World Record BASE Jump - http://current.com/items...
Burj Dubai - mid construction.jpg
Recently it was discovered that the tallest building in the world - the Burj Dubai - had been the scene for a world record (and highly illegal) BASE jump. 1 British man attempted the jump and was successful, while a second man, a Frenchman, was caught before he could jump. They were both arrested and held in Dubai. What is not known to either the authorities or the world in general, is that 2 men had already succeeded in climbing the tower and base jumping from it without being caught: another Brit and the same Frenchman who was later caught attempting a second jump. They were the first and have gone down as legends in their sport, for claiming the latest jewel in the crown of the sport. This is the story of that jump. video: http://current.com/items... - Cee Bee
