it sucks that the photos in Facebook's news feed are so tiny. You can barely even see them.
I agree! - Kreg Steppe
That's the first thing a FriendFeeder would notice. - Vinay | विनय
The whole side of "photos" on Facebook sucks actually which is why I've never really used it. Limiting albums to 200 photos for instance is lame. My neon set on Flickr has almost 3,000 photos in it. Also a lot of my photos from my Canon 5D M2 are above their 15MB file size limit. I just tried to upload a photo to facebook and it didn't work. - Thomas Hawk
That's the problem I'm having with Streamy right now too. Just a tiny bit bigger and they'd be so much more useful. - Jennifer Dittrich
The functionality is just very clunky also, i tend to just use flickr really... - james gray king
There's a script to enlarge them, but I think you mean for others to enjoy them.. - Michael Fidler
I agree, too! - Joao Alves
I mean for me to enjoy them and for others to enjoy them. The thumbnails are so super super tiny. It's hard to see what's even in them vs. the big bold photos that you can attach to a FF post or that the large group of thumbnails that come in from a Flickr upload or a Flickr fav-a-thon. - Thomas Hawk
It's like Facebook hates photographers. - Thomas Hawk
I think they do, we take op too much space. - Lars Clausen
It's a shame FaceBook can't just link to pictures from other sites and then let you tag and sort them (or preserve the sorting from the other site). They already publish Flickr updates to your stream (if you let them) so really it shouldn't be all that hard to create a Photo object that transclusions a remote image, allowing local metadata like tags, likes, comments to be applied. This would be a HUGE feature for me, IMHO. - matthew john ernisse
Yes it is true Matthew - Lars Clausen
but why improve photos when they can just get 10x the number of pageviews with lower bandwidth costs on some sort of little "guess what cartoon character I am" app? - Thomas Hawk
They should take a hint from The Big Picture Blog. - Dane Deasy
all sites should take a hint from The Big Picture Blog. It's an amazing site. - Thomas Hawk
I agree completely Thomas! - Dane Deasy
@Thomas I'd say that they should strive for continual improvement so someone else doesn't come by and steal away their user base (sorta why Google isn't really all that hurt by the daily turn up of new search engines), but I think the sarcasm works better. ;) Also I'm sure FaceBook would want Flickr to pay them for the traffic.... - matthew john ernisse
I feel like they are a lot more compressed too - Johnny

Review: Incase Power Slider battery backup case - http://arstechnica.com/journal...
Review: Incase Power Slider battery backup case
"The accessory market has responded to Apple's challenge of getting an entire day's use out of the iPhone 3G with a range of external batteries. Some function as "dongles" that attach to the bottom, while others are built into protective cases that, upon first glance, look as though their designers were drawing blueprints while under the influence. Incase's Power Slider is neither of these things." - Devon Campbell from Bookmarklet
sexy! Best one yet, props to the team who came up with this :-) - vijay
Looks stunning. This would make a nice case, let alone that it's a battery back up as well. Nice! - Fox Tucker
$99 they say but it adds .4 inches to the width. - Amani
Looks great! Am I just seeing things or is that a standard USB B port at the bottom as well? Useful for just charging with more available cables and other secondary charging sources. Amazing if it enables syncing via that port as well! - Jamie Dool
@Jamie I believe the port either charges the battery or syncs. There is a button on the case that you hold for a few seconds. After that, the data is passed through. - Devon Campbell
I held it today at the Apple store in SF. It's extremely light and has a good fit and finish but it does add a noticeable thickness to the phone that I'm not sure I want in my standard front pocket carrying location. - Jamie Dool
Just bought it and LOVE it. Don't mind the thickness. Much better than carrying around a dead brick! - Ryan Brack
I could NOT use my iPhone without this; otherwise, with all of my "pushing" and surfing and music-ing, my phone did not last past 5PM, and that is no exaggeration. Thus, when I saw this and some positive reviews, it was a no-brainer. Now, I run my phone in the same way I did before but with the brightness cranked to the top, the wireless on at all times and at 5PM I'm usually still at 100% battery. Fantastic product (although I did see some pictures of new, thinner ones out or coming out...)! - Brandon Blattner
I wonder when the new thin ones will come out. I just got a case today but I would spring for the newer thin ones. Any idea? - Amani
Just picked up one of these today as a result of needing to go to the genius bar for something else... can't wait for it to finish charging!!! - Walt Ruppar
Tested the device on the 3GS and it works fine. Actually it will work on all three generations. Prior to OS 3.0, I used to get a message on the 2G when connected 'not made for this device' or something, but haven't seen it again since upgrading to 3.0. However it doesn't really fit the 2G design, as it is really made for the 3G/3GS forma factor, but it will work in a pinch! - Walt Ruppar

Google Reader should have a ton of smarter features, here's why...
I love Google Reader, but given the number of users and feeds it has and the smarts of the team it should be able to: 1) Tell me what other items in my feeds link to the same story: help me manage my attention. 2) Support smart folders: Outlook and Newsgator have 'em. Gmail (via Quick Links) does too. Why not Reader? 3) Search unread items: you can search read items now, but not unread. I want to be able to say search for all items about X and mark them as read. What else? - Steve Rubel
Agree and I have to add that the social features suck currently: sharing by making chat contacts is @#%&*. - Nikos Anagnostou
I would like it to de-duplicate posts that somebody shares which I am already subscribed to. They should mention "this has been shared by ...." on one instnace of the post instead of showing me the post N number of times. - Brian Sloane
I like Reader, but the folks over at Feedly are doing much more to extend and improve the product than the folks at Google. - Robert Clockedile
Steve already mentioned it. But filtering items linking to the same story would be great. I'm getting annoyed when there is one story going around and every blog or website seems to write a post on it. But I know new other reader which is able to do this. Would be really a time saver. - Matthias Faller
Problem is, Rob, you need a plug in. - Steve Rubel from IM
Agreed. It won't work for everybody, but it's got an excellent (and growing) set of features, including beta Ubiquity integration. - Robert Clockedile from twhirl
...I know, I know...another plug in. - Robert Clockedile from twhirl
This is probably a silly question but is there a way to see a list of every reader-article that I've emailed out to either myself or friends?? - Will DeLuca
I love Google Reader. I would like to be able to choose my page view. When I click to read an article the page is adapted for mobile phone, I would like to view in HTML. I know of no way to change this. It would be nice to be able to choose. - Elizabeth
Google has a Digg competitor right in it's midst. I should be able to see most stared and most shared stories for the day, week, month etc. - Tim
The one thing I want with Google Reader is the ability to hide shared items from specific sources (source of that wishlist item? FF, of course). - Tamar Weinberg
I also love reader, but I would *love* to be able to setup rules to mark feeds with certain tags read once they become so old. For instance, I have feeds tagged as news and news-slow. Anything in news is stale after about 6 hours, anything in news-slow after about 2 days. I want to setup those preferences in Reader and have it mark those items as read for me, because going through yesterday's breaking news is a pain in the neck. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I like those suggestion Steve! Some of them are also applicable to feedly and the crowd we are catering. Thanks for kicking off this conversation! (Rob thanks for the support!) - Edwin Khodabakchian
I would love for Google Reader to flag duplicate news stories as well, Steve. - Liana Lehua
I wish they'd add Gtalk like in gmail. And adding friends/sharing has to be improved. I've also been unimpressed with search in greader. - Graham English
Merge Google Reader and Google Bookmarks ! - Stanislas Jourdan
Hmm, I wonder if Google Bookmarks is dying too. It was integrated with Notebook. - Steve Rubel from IM
My guess is that google has hired the founder of delicious to try to do something big and consistent around tagging and bookmarking. Something that could tie together Chrome, Android, Google Bookmarks, Google Reader. At least this is what I am hoping. The fragmentation is pretty painful for the end user. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Bookmarks sync is central to Chrome so somehow I think it will survive and become more social - Steve Rubel from IM
greader and gmail should merge. Both emails and feeds are easy to manage and access with the help of filters and labels. Email is a good tool to share with a wide variety of social networks. - xavier vespa
the shared items doesn't have the proper rss feed format. Can't use it elsewhere without it getting all monkeyed up.. Also a mark as unread option. Themes seems a direction it should soon incorporate. A piping feature like Yahoo Pipes offers. - Mike Skramstad
I love reader, but duplicates haven been driving me NUTS recently. I've recently started using Yahoo Pipes to combine some of of my feeds that commonly duplicate stories into one feed and remove duplicates. - Steve Boerner
Greader needs to be integrated with gmail. - Russ Jackson
one of my most desired options is to be able to sort my feeds by unread count, regardless of what folders they're in... so I get just a big list of all the feeds I'm subscribed to in order from feeds with 1 or 2 unread stories all the way to the feeds with 1000+ unread - I mentioned this to Edwin at Feedly and he seems keen to add into their product soon: http://getsatisfaction.com/feedly... - It's amazing to me that Google Reader doesn't offer that option already. - Nathan Chase
Getting the duplicate stories out will be a little tough - especially if the feed you subscribe to doesn't link back to their source - but it can definitely be done... would just have to do some regex/fuzzy logic-type querying of post title, content, and outbound links on the page to determine a percentage of similarity. You could then have a similarity threshold slider to adjust your "duplicate filter". - Nathan Chase
Are there perhaps other readers which do some of these? - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I use reader heaps, but I'd still love more features! - Will Higgins™
I'd like to save my searches in greader. - Wallace
I, too, would like a pony with my gReader. - David Chartier from BuddyFeed
I would NOT want gmail and greader combined, but better social features in the sidebar would be nice. Also improve tagging and let me set time based rules. I like yahoo pipes, though I'm not sure google would want to add something like it as a feature of reader, but I would like a pony. - John
I agree, the pony seems obvious, and it's certainly within Google's power to provide one for everyone. - Michael C. Harris
The ability to offer 3rd party features is exactly what the purpose of the soon_to_be_launched "Google reader API", as discussed by Niall Kennedy, is. His post: http://www.niallkennedy.com/blog... There is also an unofficial reverse engineering project here: http://code.google.com/p... - coldbrew
Duplicates within Reader are annoying. There is a script that helps with this but it's not great. It's certainly one problem with GR that needs looking at. - Kol Tregaskes
On my Google Reader wish list: 1. smart recommender system for news of personal relevance 2. incremental search of subscriptions in left column 3. incremental search of unread items in right column, both for All items and in each folder 4. rename folders 5. delete folders 6. easier moving of folders and feeds from one location to another (perhaps cut and paste) 7. seamless integration with Friendfeed. - Sean McBride
I'd like greader to be smart enough to know I already read a post - at the site, via an aggregator or ... No time for ponies - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
Plus could it stop letting me subscribe twice to the same feed :) - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
@mcwflint if you are a firefox user and install the feedly extension, you can configure feedly mini to mark articles as read in Google Reader when you visit websites directly. - Edwin Khodabakchian
Thanks. I'll try it on the non iPhone days - MaryAnn Chick Whiteside
This one would be useful: "search for all items about X and mark them as read." I like the search feature in Google Reader. When I notice an interesting news about a subject, I immediately search for it to read what has been said about it in my other feeds. 2 or 3 articles are usually more than enough to know more about it, so it would be really useful to be able to mark all the others as read. - Mehdi Trimech
I'm loving Feedly so far. The fact that it is a plugin is very beneficial when you are generally surfing (not reading RSS), and you auto-discover the relevant conversations to join in on. Obviously Google will do something soon that will take me back to Reader, but for now I'm going to use Feedly - Paul R. Grant
Feedly's picture grid view is awesome, but the fact that I can't mark items as unread keeps me from using it fulltime. Some innovation in the way feeds are displayed would add a lot to Google Reader. Here's some idea - picture grid (ala feedly), timeline, contextual view (grouped by content like videos, links, etc) - Ashish Bogawat

One thing really sucks about Tweetie (very cool iPhone Twitter client): how it does RT's. Why can't it do them like everyone else?
The elitist nature of some iPhone devs? - Gavin
yeah, at the very lease Tweetie should give the option to RT the normal way. But I'll take the flashlight and farting sounds for now ;) - Jeff
i was excited when i saw that tweetie actually had a RT function... but then I tried retweeting... forget that. i sometimes see people on blip.fm do it that way (via @username), but it is still done manually. In fact, the Reblip button duplicates the message and adds the link (reblip) to the end of the message, (linking back to original blip). However the reblip button doesn't include the name of the original blipper, so some people add (via @user). Very strange. - Jaica Kinsman

Heh. Eric, I've been wanting to do something similar with 52clix.com for a while. That is, tie an existing photo sharing/printing service with my community product. Photographers could then have an easy way to sell prints/books/etc. seamlessly through the site. don-put markham in touch w/ exec team. let me know how else i can help. -sigmund@jpg - sig naah
I must say I hadn't really known about it, as I am normally over at dgrin.com, and don't do many tree magazines. I just signed up on the JPG website, which looks great, and if the SmugPeople get behind it, I'll chip in however I can, FWIW. Looks like it'd be a shame to lose such a great resource. - James Schipper
A lot of people have posted at http://www.savejpg.com. It would be great to save it. - ropiku
If SmugMug walks away from the JPG implosion interested in a cheaper asset purchase, 52 Clix is open for discussions. ryan@52clix - Ryan Gillespie

None of this Twitter phishing started until Twply was sold. Just sayin...
Correlation doesn't always imply causation, but if everyone who got phished also signed up with Twply...Hmmm - Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
Exaclty Bwana! But then, selling a business is really "normal". So it's up to the user to care for his data I think - directeur
It's made me think twice about signing into twitpic, too..... - WorldofHiglet
Damn...that is a very keen observation, sir. Did the sale of Twply cause the Phishing problems? - Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Rahsheen, I don't think so... phishing will always be as long as there is bad AND naive people. IMO. - directeur
I don't have any solid evidence of course, but the coincidence is there... makes you think - Bwana ☠
I thought the same thing. If nothing else, it told the spammers that lots of people were willing to give away their credentials without a moment's thought... - Sprague D

We're going to see a lot more of this in 2009 - and it's healthy. People will invest in their own homes, not the watering holes where they hang. - Steve Rubel
+1 @Dominic...nothing wrong with just being part of the hoi polloi - .LAG liked that
I thought Twitter was basically just a place to redirect FF posts to no? - Thomas Hawk
@ Steve Rubel, that certainly makes sense. Most of our readers are not here, but for some good discourse with people who will challenge your thinking, I find FF very stimulating. - Dominic Jones
Oops, I think I just insulted my blog's readers. I meant to say coming here is refreshing and interesting because it's more diverse. My blog is about one thing, and it gets a little tedious. - Dominic Jones
I had this problem with Plurk, being on it 24/7. What I've learned and love about Twitter, even with its flaws, is that you don't owe anyone anything. Update at your leisure. Twitter has the one thing many other services don't have: mobility. That's what keeps me on it. - Allen S.
@Thomas I see what you did, there... - MVB (Curmudgeon of FF)
I had similar thoughts and wrote about them here: http://bit.ly/PZgk . I guess it depends on how or what you use Twitter for, but for the big conversation, Friendfeed is built much better. - Wallace Wilson
A must read if you have been 'on twitter' too much lately. Funny thing is the coincidence that I also started to use FriendFeed (& check SocialMedian) a couple of days ago for the same reasons. My conclusion is to push messages to t. but to microblog in a personal way on identi.ca/markusmerz and to follow and comment on FF. Twitter just doesn't taste good anymore. - Markus Merz
I'm still using Twitter a lot but have decided to take more time for FriendFeed as well in '09. I've had an account for several months and wasn't really doing much besides checking in every once in a while. But, now I'm using it a lot more and loving the experience. - Justin Levy

More often than I'd like. It's one of those things I'm constantly working on. Dealing with an anxiety disorder causes me to react this way sometimes so I have to be cognizant of why I'm afraid of the unfamiliar and not let it run my life. -

For 2009 I am going to try to go the whole year using Safari. It's fast. I am using its RSS more for some feeds. Plus the snapback rocks.
whats good about safari.. i mean what makes it worth using.. like the add ons with frefox... ;o) - Rob Sellen :o)
I'm going to try use IE 8 more. - Dominic Jones
@Rob I find the extensions add unnecessary load and 9x out of 10 I can do what I need to with bookmarkets. Less is more. But to each his/her own. The rendering engine in Safari is better. - Steve Rubel
Thanks... never tried it myself... i get a bit pissed off with firefox at times.. hangs sometimes. :o( google chrome is neat, in the "less is more" sense.. :o) - Rob Sellen :o)
I'll join you, Steve. Firefox only for web dev testing, extensions like Firebug - Matt Harwood
Good luck trying. - Amit Morson
FF hung a lot on my old 512MB PC. No problems now on a 4GB notebook. Chrome badly needs RSS and better bookmarking. I use it mainly for monitoring social networking sites and FF as the work horse. - Bob Morris (polizeros)
Thanks, Steve. I am going to do the same. The "productivity" add-ons I started using Firefox for are not optimal for me. Because FF takes so long to load sometimes, I'm waiting longer to use an add-on than it would take me to go to another app, input my data and move to my next task/activity. - Liana Lehua
Instead of Safari, perhaps you guys may want to use Webkit as this is what Safari is based on? They do have nightly builds so it's updated daily. - Allen S.
I like safari, but the RSS reader is slow. Strangely, apple's Mail app fares much better for RSS feeds. - stretta from twhirl
