So you have just finished months of grueling investor presentations and due diligence and finally one (or hopefully more) VCs have signaled their interest in negotiating the terms of an investment in your startup. This interest may be in the form of an actual term sheet that they've sent to you or a call/meeting/email indicating they would like to make an offer but want to talk about terms before shooting something over the transom.
- Steve Woda
Congrats! Hopefully now they can celebrate a little as well as post the times for the remaining teams...
- Tim Trueman
Tim, first a little singing and dancing. Give us a few minutes to settle down and catch our breath, then you know we're gonna want to know every detail about the other teams. Actually, I'm already worried about Minnesota. I heard they had another bang incident.
- TC Lambert
Okay, it's been an hour. I'm starting to get curious. Has anyone else crossed the line? I'm thinking Waterloo will be second across the line. How crazy will the Canadian crowd go for that?
- TC Lambert
Out of curiosity, could UM trailer and still win tomorrow? If they've got it locked up, congrats! Now if only I could know if Principia can finish second that would make me very happy :)
- Tim Trueman
Well, the penalty for trailering the entire last stage would be 8:05. Definitely too much of a penalty to finish ahead of Principia unless Principia trailers to Medicine Hat. It might still allow a finish ahead of Bochum, depending on when Bochum arrives today. I would, however, prefer we not test this hypothesis.
- Garrick Williams
According to Alex in the U of M Blog: An update from Medicine Hat: Waterloo rolled in a while ago (I think 3:45pm, but no one should quote me on that) and Minnesota just pulled in (~4:34pm unofficial time). -
- Jose Alvarez
So the question is, where are the Germans and Principia? It looks like trailering to Brandon was the right call
- Jose Alvarez
Nice to hear Minnesota made it, presumably under their own steam. Waterloo didn't trailer either, as far as I know - though I suspect the trailer ride to Brandon was still the right call for some teams. Be interesting to see where Calgary ends up.
- Garrick Williams
C'mon, it's after 6:30 Medicine Hat time. Everybody should be there. Where are Bochum and Principia? Did they have to trailer in?
- TC Lambert
Michigan's car still has a chance to set the race speed record. They still have something to race for. So no talk of trailering. Zip it. Zip it. Zip it.
- TC Lambert
Didn't say they didn't, just sayin' there's a contingency. As in, get it across the line, even if you have to carry it.
- Garrick Williams
It appears that teams are still running Michelin Solar Car Radials. We had received word here in Oz that Michelin withdrew their support from solar car racing prior to the event. What actions did teams take to be allowed to run Michelins in NASC 2008?
I was told by the team that they had to arrange some last minute third party tire testing that NASC said would be sufficient to demonstrate that the tires were safe. Apparently Michigan's approval applies to all teams, but the last minute nature of the testing meant that some teams had already packed up and left for Plano with no Michelins in their trailer.
- Garrick Williams
They also mentioned that Durham has been running on a supply of lightly used Michelins given to them by Michigan.
- Garrick Williams
A related tire question. Back in '97 I had to call a company in either Yugoslavia or Serbia that made a motorcycle racing tire that was going to be our alternate tires for the Michellins. After talking to them about our team and the situation we got a box of tires a couple of weeks later with some stickers for free from the company. I can not remember the name of the company and was...

Jose, they were Savacron tires. The team still uses them. See the July 11th blog entry from qualifying. The only reason they didn't fit in '99 was cause the rim profile was wrong on our wheels. They fit fine in '01.
- Jason Kramb
Savas are still the team's standard track tire. They burn out a lot slower when you're turning/braking a lot.
- Garrick Williams
Ask and so shall you receive! Awesome! Thx for sharing!
- Furqan
Loooks like the team has hit Swift Current, next stop Medicine Hat!
- Jose Alvarez
Like I was getting any work done before.
- TC Lambert
TC Lambert's not the only one, you know most of us would rather look at a logo on a map rather than do real work!
- Maggie Hayes
So on my Internet Explorer the Continuum logo was leaving blue dots every few kilometers on the road. I load it up on Firefox to clear up some IE windows and suddenly the cars moving along in real time ( a la Indiana Jones lineson a map :) )
- Jose Alvarez
From my high-tech measure-distances-between-roads-on-google-maps-and-use-a-stopwatch method, it appears Continuum is zipping along at or near the speed limit. Also, weather reports clear skies at their location. A good day for racing.
- Garrick Williams
Assuming the limit is 100 kph and not 110 kph on this stretch, that is.
- Garrick Williams
I dont know where the stop is in Medicine Hat (is there a Toyota dealership there? :) ) But it looks like the team is about 40-50 miles out.
- Jose Alvarez
The stop is at the Family Leisure Center on the north side of Medicine Hat. I checked the Route entry on NASC's website. You get a .pdf file. Page 14 has a picture of the place. Then with Google maps you can go to the satellite view and see the blue roof and the baseball fields across the street. The internet is fun!
- TC Lambert
Apparently the team decided to stop at the Alberta border for lunch (or at least the GPS unit did!)
- Jose Alvarez
I don't know what happened to the tracker, but they're just outside Medicine Hat now and should be at the checkpoint in about 20 minutes.
- Charles Eichhorst
you were right Garrick, lolcat busted it
- Jose Alvarez
Great story! Wonderful that someone out ot the blue shows up to help.
- TC Lambert
We got an open water sailor when we needed help with our carbon repairs, and Kentucky gets a biker when they need a new suspension rod machined - amazing how lucky you get sometimes...
- Garrick Williams
Boy that makes MREs sounds appetizing!
- Tim Trueman
In WSC our truck driver's wife played team chef. Her lamb kebabs were delicious, as were the salads, steak, smoked sausage, and other delicacies. It was so good it tasted fine even with red dirt and flies constantly blowing into your mouth. So short answer is no.
- Garrick Williams
In 2005 we got pasta donated, we asked for a couple kinds - they gave us vermicelli and thin spaghetti, which are the exact same thing. We had pasta probably 2 out of every 3 nights, at one point we were cooking 10lbs at a time on the grill. I still can't look at spaghetti and red sauce the same... I do remember at least one other team (maybe Rolla or Prin?) using MREs. Furqan, was it...

Ya, the 1990 team had a motorhome-sized chow wagon compliments of GM...
- Furqan
There're a couple where you can actually see my son! He usually jumps out of the way of cameras.
- TC Lambert
TC, I am about to post some pictures links, I have plenty of Doug at work (though he is very dirty in *all* of them), that I would be happy to share with you later.
- Maggie Hayes
Wait - Maggie - you have dirty pictures of Doug??!! -Betsy (Doug's Mom)
- TC Lambert
haha, touche! dirty = grimy. :P I strongly encouraged him to take a shower before someone's mother saw him. Actually, I believe they wear the filth as a badge of honor, I have a picture somewhere of what they were calling the "dirty hands club" YUCK!
- Maggie Hayes
Thanks for the pics, Maggie! I just got back from downloading a lot of them! -Betsy
- TC Lambert
You know you just might be an engineer if, when a pretty girl drives by, you check out her car.
- TC Lambert
Looks like Michigan, Principia, Bochum, Waterloo, Calgary, and Missouri reached Sioux Falls in that order. Minnesota, Red River, Queens, Iowa State, Northwestern, Kentucky, and Arizona still position unknown. Looks like Michigan has extended its lead over Principia, and Principia has extended its lead over Bochum. Waterloo looks like it has closed in on Missouri in elapsed time to challenge for 4th. Anybody know if Minnesota is all right?
- TC Lambert
It would be great to know the running times - like the boards they had up at WSC. Easy for someone to take a picture and fire it online!! Its unfortunate that the NASC site doesn't have more frequent updates! But I suppose there will be so much blogging going on. Or at least have the GPS trackers again. Awsome to see Calgary in the top pack! Way to GO!
- B.J.
According to coomments on a blog post on Minnesota's site it sounds like they stopped 40 miles south of Sioux Falls.
- Jose Alvarez
great shot of Continuum charging by the puddle. I always like explaining that tactic the uninitiated, as well as the other tactic of having the team taking a nap in front of the array while wearing white or bright yellow shirts
