"it occurred to me that the whole McDonald's experience had been enormously enriched by our awareness of healthy eating, becoming a communal exercise in chomping through false consciousness. It made me suspect that the entire McLibel business, Fast Food Nation and Super Size Me had all been secretly funded by the corporation in order to impart the pleasing flavour of guilt to its comestibles."

I'd love to see some hard data on this too. For desktop use, I guess the battery will last slightly longer if you take it out. Cycling through the battery completely a few times per day seems like it would be the worst alternative since LiPo's generally lasts about 1K cycles or less.
- Gunnar Östergren
there's a great website, batteryuniversity.com . I think how quickly the battery degrades by leaving it plugged in all the time depends a little on the architecture. In both my HP laptops the battery degraded really quickly. I think it's because the placement of the battery keeps it too warm.

My Pavillion's manual says that one should remove the battery if it is to be used plugged (only) for more than 2 weeks. Anyhow, HP sucks. >:(

I've already reached the end of my macbook pro's second battery. This one only lasted 60 cycles before hitting 30% health and I had it plugged in A LOT. The one before this one lasted a couple hundred cycles and I had it plugged in a bit less.

I keep one crappy old battery that I use around the house when the laptop is plugged in all the time and one for when I actually need the battery. I don't see how leaving it plugging for charging and half charging for years at a time wouldn't screw it up.
- Josh Wilkins
Depends, some laptops have a battery bypass when on AC, in which case it doesn't matter. All laptops should have this feature though laptop makers make a LOT of money on battery replacements so.... If your laptop doesn't have a bypass and will run without a battery when on AC it is probably better to take it out.
