When I first came on to ff today, this is what I saw at the top of the feed. As I leave, it is at the top again. Thus, I both start and end the day smiling.

I'm just gonna go ahead and let this be my embarrassing photo meme entry.

“The measures taken by successive governments to save the politically corrupt, morally bankrupt, physically decrepit giant from collapse have served to only hasten its demise. While the decline has been decades in the making, the acceleration of ruinous policies under the current Administration is leading the United States — and much of the world — to the point of no return,” says Celente. By 2012, even those in denial and still clinging to hope will be forced to face the truth. It will be called “Obamageddon” in America. The rest of the world will call it “The Greatest Depression.”

Just because he forecasts a gloomy future? Time will tell, but he is a genius for many people, including me.
- Michael Forian
No, it's more that many of his previous predictions were either wrong or extraordinarily vague, or so obvious anyone could see it... as mentioned in the two links I just posted.
- Andrew C (✓)
Isn't 2012 when all heck is gonna break loose anyway? I saw it in a movie trailer... :)
- Bill Sodeman
I've never heard of Celente till today, and what I've read of his writings does not fill me with confidence.
- Andrew C (✓)
Andrew, have you seen The Obama Deception? By Alex Jones (Oh no! I mentioned thou' who shall not be named!)? Celente is in 90% of it. Check it out on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Michael Forian
You will not be disappointed to learn that I consider Alex Jones a kook as well. (And the wikipedia page for Celente rightly notes that his more extravagant claims are hard to find verification for. Combine that with his banal or wrong claims and well, no, in my book the evidence for 'genius' is looking mighty slim.)
- Andrew C (✓)
The Wikipedia page showed both sides of the story, not a one sided one. Only time will tell with Celente, again, he is a "future" trends forecaster!
- Michael Forian
Time should already tell! He's been in this game for years now and his predictions to date are either lame in that they're too-vague-or-obvious-to-qualify, wrong, or unverified.
- Andrew C (✓)
So you're telling me that his predictions (I'll take it that you mean the vast majority of them, not all), that were lame in the sense that they're too-vague-or-obvious-to-qualify, wrong, or unverified got him to create the Trends Research Institute? http://www.trendsresearch.com/ - His praisers vastly out weigh his critics. He knows his stuff, and he will point out the obvious, for why...

The more I read about this guy, the more he sounds like a snake oil pitchman. The web site design for that company is straight out of Kook Central. (I know, you can't judge a website by its design) But since his two books (from 1991 and 1999) are available at my local library, I will give them a skim.
- Andrew C (✓)
Go for it. Maybe you'll find something to like about him :-)
- Michael Forian
And I'm sorry, but if you think worthless people don't get paid - and quite well - you have clearly missed the Cramer/CNBC fracas of a few months ago, plus, I dunno, a truckload of other examples.
- Andrew C (✓)
Cramer was gambling with people's money. That's a big no-no with Celente. Him and his institute do not give out financial advice.
- Michael Forian
My _point_ was that just cause the guy has a company and gets paid to make predictions does not mean he is credible.
- Andrew C (✓)
Hundreds of news networks across the globe use him as a credible source, be it CNN or Russia Today. I guess we should all turn off the TV so we can be shielded from Celente's mild errors.
- Michael Forian
Argument from Authority is a logical fallacy. (edit: and so is a strawman argument.)
- Andrew C (✓)
It is. But I was only turning your extremist beliefs about Celente into a pathetic parody. And, I was stating the obvious.
- Michael Forian
"into a pathetic parody" Yeah, /that's what a strawman argument is/.
- Andrew C (✓)
Actually, it's the truth, but I'll let you label my comments to your pleasure ;)
- Michael Forian
*awaits for above comment to be labeled as fallacy... wait, maybe this one will be too?*

Jordan just threatened war of all Arab states if Israel does not agree to negotiate with Abu Mazen. this means that Fatah does not recognize the right of a Jewish state unless it is the unsustainable 1967 border. this means the "2 state" idea does not exist. the PLO is now claiming that Arafat never got the approval from Fatah... let alone Hamas or Hezballah. so as far as logic is...

This is why I'm proud of the Kennedy's— "In the mid-1970s, after Nixon’s fall from grace for attempting to cover-up Watergate, Congress passed the War Powers Act, eliminated the draft, demanded oversight of the CIA, cut the budget for the Pentagon’s Special Operations Forces, and curtailed the ClA’s paramilitary capabilities. “The lesson of Vietnam is that we must throw off the cumbersome mantle of world policeman,” said then senator Edward Kennedy. PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup's annual update on Americans' attitudes toward the environment shows a public that over the last two years has become less worried about the threat of global warming, less convinced that its effects are already happening, and more likely to believe that scientists themselves are uncertain about its occurrence. In response to one key question, 48% of Americans now believe that the seriousness of global warming is generally exaggerated, up from 41% in 2009 and 31% in 1997, when Gallup first asked the question.

Fenton Forian, 1998-2010. We had to have him put down because of growing tumour on his belly and two masses, one near his heart and one near his lungs. We were only informed that he would only have a few days at the most to live, because he was anemic, on Wednesday. My brother, who originally bought the dog, slept over last night to be with him for the last time. This morning, my mother, brother and myself brought him to the vet with tears bursting out onto out faces. We then tried to compose ourselves. They have him a major tranquillizer and we had a good 15 minutes to talk to him. The nice doctor, Madame Claire, started process after that and we had another 5 minutes alone with him. He was really a great dog. Most Golden's are. He past away at exactly 11:00AM this morning.

friendfeed should allow for "liking" comments so top comments can be the ones shown, no matter the chronology. And allow the users to watch comments by likes, threaded or chronologically.

It would be nice if we could pick the number of comments shown at the top and bottom, I'd like to see the first 3 and last 3 for example.
- Kol Tregaskes
I usually read all the comments of something I'm interested in. I don't just read the top and bottom ones so I don't care where I come in. I comment on what I want to because I want to say something. It's nice if the original poster reads/responds to it, but not absolutely necessary. Most of the time the most fun/interaction comes from other commenters.

Being last has one drawback. It makes you a thread-killer. I'm not sure some of us like being that. Sometimes I'd rather see the discussion keep going.

I'm in the market for an entry-level DSLR. These are the 2 that I'm stuck between. All I'm asking for is a basic comparison and which one YOU think is a better choice. If you have an suggestions for a better DSLR, feel free to comment as well!

I had a Sony CyberShot 5 mp that I truly enjoyed and loved. When I stepped up to DSLR I went with the Canon XSi rather than the Sony because of the reviews and image comparisons at http://www.dpreview.com/ Plus I knew the odds of being able to rent lenses before buying were better with something like a Canon or Nikon.
- FFing Enigma
Go with the Canon - without a doubt. I had been looking for a while and I researched. Ended up with the Rebel Xsi and I couldn't be happier with it.
- Holli C. Buck
I don't have the option to bump up to the XSi, so if I were to get a Canon, it would only be the XS.
- Michael Forian
Michael, the site I posted above should still have some decent comparison shots for the XS. In fact, here is where they compare it to several cameras including the A200 (though not the A200k) http://www.dpreview.com/reviews... There are spec and image comparisons, which might help you decide.
- FFing Enigma
Tina! The site helped a lot! I couldn't check it right away due to my teacher being a bit anal about going on non-school related websites :( Again, thanks :) Canon is looking the best right now!
- Michael Forian
Just got the XSi about a week ago. I'm completely in love with it.
- m.0
I wonder if anyone on FriendFeed has the A200?
- Michael Forian
When purchasing a DSLR body you are not so much buying a camera as buying into a line of lenses. Lenses are 100x more important than the body they attach to. So the better question is Canon or Sony lenses. And the answer there is clear: Canon. Buy Canon or Nikon, nothing else.
- Benjamin Golub
Canon XSi. I have one. Great Camera, and as Benjamin says, there are great lenses (such as the Canon L series) that work with it. Even the kit lens is good, much better than previous Canon kit lenses, I'm led to believe.

Oh, come on! Do you really think he was talking about Israel? Paul wouldn't touch Israel, with Stein there, with a 30ft poll while on CNN. He was talking about the states.
- Michael Forian
who used the occupation word? time for Paul to show up at a bar stool next to Mel Gibson. maybe Jimmy Carter can show him how to write a meaningless apology letter. Paul is a moron on most things. you can't create trickle down economics without a vessel that can hold water. our vessel is called a Republic. his internationalist view on Capitalism trickles out.... it doesn't trickle down in
- NoahDavidSimon
to use the word occupied you must look at his language. Israel never occupied Judea, Jerusalem and Samaria. to say that one would have to assume that there was a country that was occupied. a broken treaty became the reason the Jordanians did occupy those lands from 1948 to 1967 and committed ethnic cleansing. to argue these facts as opinion is bias, prejudice. you go in the right circles and gravity itself becomes a mere opinion... the only way to prove otherwise is to diagnose the person making the claim
- NoahDavidSimon
I didn't agree with Ben Stein that Islam was not the cause. It's his analysis and weakness on that issue which brings him into dialog with Paul and Lee. Lee obviously wants more money to be spent, Paul wants no money to be spent... but Ben Stein enables both of them by saying that the reason all of this is so expensive is because we don't say who is attacking us. It really is that...

Hey guys! Long time no chat! So, I was going through the pictures on my Sony digital camera and wanted to see the photos on the internal memory. I took out the memory stick and to my surprise I found 2 pictures that I had never taken in my life! The first being the interior of Future Shop (Canada's Best Buy) and the other being taken of an employee (of Future Shop) inside of Future Shop. Yes, I had purchased the camera at Future Shop, more than a year ago, and I had never checked the internal memory. The guy who sold me the camera for my mom told me that it was "brand new" and never used (I always make sure of this because I hate the fact of someone already "spoiling" the product). So, what should I do? Go to Future Shop and show it to them? Ask them for a total refund? Something more?! WHAT SHOULD I DEMAND!!! :D
- Michael Forian
Show it to them in writing and cc any consumer organizations you know of for Canada. Consumerist is focused on the US but I believe they occasionally publish incidents that have happened in other countries. Before you frame your letter, read other stories on the web to see what those people said and did. I'm pretty sure Consumerist has done stories on products sold as new that turned out not to be.
- Spidra Webster
Before you contact them, though, decide what you're asking for. Are you willing to keep the camera but want a discount that reflects its open box state? Do you want to return or exchange the camera? What do you want them to do? Have that clearly expressed in the letter/email.

As native Venetians flee in droves to the mainland for cheaper housing and easier living, those who have stayed marked their modern-day demise with a mock funeral procession Saturday down the Grand Canal."

60,000 is a large number, unless you consider the infrastructure of the city itself. Built to support a much larger population and with some pretty unique requirements, it takes a lot of full time residents to keep a place like that going - esp. when abandoned buildings have to be kept up, or they'll cause their neighborhood to sink.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I really don't know why it's 60,000... makes me think back to that Muslim Demographics video where they said that any country's population with less than a 2.1% fertility rate is totally screwed.

I am! I am! The thought of people questioning my presence as a critique, because of my nationality, of American politicians did cross my mind while creating the channel (to be honest, I was thinking of doing a mix of Canadian/American politics). US politics are infinitely more interesting when compared to Canadian parliamentarian politics! We have 4 dumb major parties (one of which is only there to strive for Quebec sovereignty) that bicker all day long, form coalitions, end coalitions and get literally nothing done. The last time I was interested in Canadian politics was a few weeks back when a pro-climate change protestor got into Parliament and yelled at the members of parliament. I laughed.

"PRINCETON, NJ -- Conservatives continue to outnumber moderates and liberals in the American populace in 2009, confirming a finding that Gallup first noted in June. Forty percent of Americans describe their political views as conservative, 36% as moderate, and 20% as liberal. This marks a shift from 2005 through 2008, when moderates were tied with conservatives as the most prevalent group."

"President Obama announced in March that he would be sending 21,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. But in an unannounced move, the White House has also authorized -- and the Pentagon is deploying -- at least 13,000 troops beyond that number, according to defense officials. The additional troops are primarily support forces, including engineers, medical personnel, intelligence experts and military police. Their deployment has received little mention by officials at the Pentagon and the White House, who have spoken more publicly about the combat troops who have been sent to Afghanistan."

The modern army is deceptive it has a very long tail and for every combat soldier are several support soldiers in a huge base somewhere and half a dozen truck drivers doing everr more dangerous convoy duty and of course the ever present uncounted mercs security guards and armed private contractors who do much the same tasks as a soldier in other wars but don't go on the tally sheet

Just when you thought TechCrunch could not sink any lower ~ with its latest article looks like Arrington's now using a TECH site to platform a right wingnut political agenda seriously #WTF - "Obama, Does It Take Winning A Nobel To Get An Email From You? What #Obamashould Do." - http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...
"Editor’s note: Below is an open letter to our President from guest author Edo Segal, a concerned web geek who cares about the future of our democracy. It is followed by a proposal and a new website for anyone who thinks they know what #obamashould do (cynics please skip post). Mr President, On the night of your acceptance speech, just before you walked on stage, “you” sent out an email saying “i will be in touch soon”—but you disappeared and all we were left with was the strange feeling you get when your older brother ditches you for his cooler friends. Does it take you winning a Nobel prize to get another direct letter from you? Where’s the attention? The yes-we-can attitude, making us feel we can be good again? It seems that since you made it to the Oval Office you have been too busy at work, and our relationship has really suffered. I recall that as the election results where announced, there was an epiphany that hit the pundits and us web folks at the same time. “He’s going to...

And a not well-informed op-ed at that. Wonder why Arrington et al have decided to post this [drivel]?!

Well after Peace! Obama v. The CrunchPad ~ http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... it's not too irregular now though still pretty raving mad & completely outside the usual orbit of TechCruch's regular articles; political and with a crude right wing tone. As to posting this, the ranter explains rather lamely in a one line ambiguous sentence: as TechCrunch readers grease the wheels of online progress. ????
- The Real sofarsoShawn
It all seems to come from a narrow-minded point of view, a view that excludes the global perspective and a view that completely misses the explanation the Nobel Committee gave for the NPP. And also, where is his entitlement coming from? Is this a form of advertizing? Bad press is still press? Does TechCrunch really need the attention? I know, a lot of questions and no answers ...
- Rene, Pro Button Pusher
Yeah it's strange, though it's still my second favourite tech site after RWW. I like TC's edge
- The Real sofarsoShawn
I'll have Arrington as president over Obama any day.
- Michael Forian
I don't understand how you could call the guest write,r or techcrunch, a wing-nut? He's questioning how Obama is using his valuable information. Especially since he offered that information with the understanding of getting something in return. I don't understand why more people aren't questioning how their trust is being used.

"In a clip played by MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, Black says, "Our two-party system is a bowl of shit looking in the mirror at itself. ... Basically, the last eight years, I feel, the Republicans stood around farting and the Democrats went, 'Ooh, let me smell it.'""

The two-party system is a farce and a disgrace, especially, since both parties are sitting on the same side of the middle, one a bit further to the right than the other. There must be more choice, and choice from a spectrum of sides for a democracy to really represent everyone.

Corporate entities should look to funding smaller political parties like the Libertarian Party, which has a lot of potential if it could get off the ground.
- Michael Forian
A corporate-funded Libertarian Party wouldn't look much different from the current Republican Party.
- John (bird whisperer)
I seem to have more and more issues with libertarianism, because I think it is nothing more than polished anarchism. Choosing to be a libertarian means that whatever any form government does, you disagree with, but the option that you have available to fix the issue is a solution that will never ever be implemented by any government anywhere in the world. So, libertarians are only...

"but the option that you have available to fix the issue is a solution that will never ever be implemented by any government anywhere in the world." Unless you're a glibertarian instead. (they say they're libertarians, but somehow their solutions seem to align with big business a lot of the time...)

"BECK: Of all things, the Nobel Peace Prize should be turned down by Barack Obama and given — you ready for this, oh this one’s going to make headlines — should be give to the Tea Party goers and the 9-12 Project. … Because of the arrogance of the progressives that thought no one would stand in their way. That he would be able to accomplish everything. Two weeks into his presidency, they nominated him for it and said, “oh this is going to be a slam dunk.” Because of the Tea Party goers and the 9-12 Project people that stood in his way and stopped him from accomplishing the things that he thought, “please, I’m the Messiah, I’ll be able to accomplish that.”"

Well, now we know who took Rush's Oxy stash.

Well, Beckie, you should be euthanized ... we can't have it all, can we?!
- Rene, Pro Button Pusher
Stupid. While I DO happen to believe that Obama should turn down the prize, it should DEFINITELY NOT go to anything related to Beck. The Nobel Foundation should have waited until the end of his first term to give it to Obama, giving it to him now is pointless.
- Michael Forian
Whatever Beck's been smoking, I'd love a hit of it.
- Chris Charabaruk
Pardon my saying it but Beck is a fucking moron. He's just pissed because HE wasn't nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
- Prosey BUTTONS!
I'm sure the Nobel Committee can come up with a prize for Douchebag of the Year ...
- Rene, Pro Button Pusher
Beck doesn't realize that Europeans find him and the people who listen to him to be complete and ignorant fools. Of course he knows this, because his viewer base is completely ignorant of that fact as well.
- Rene, Pro Button Pusher
It should go to the Rush/Beck combo. Did you read Rush Limpball's response to this? Gawd, the neocons are frothing like rabid dogs over this.
- Prosey BUTTONS!
Yup, I did. It's true what Rachel Maddow said yesterday: after trying to impeach Obama there is nothing left for the fringers to do. Well, other than actually kill him.
- Rene, Pro Button Pusher
As @alansmurray said: "Nobel goes to 'person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations ....' shall have done". The award is for accomplishments, not intentions.

Most likely. We should ask Forian what the Ukrainian part of his heritage was doing to Jews in Ukraine in 1941, shouldn't we?
- George Hall (Australia)
I think it might be a good idea. hey @FORIAN?
- NoahDavidSimon
I once knew a girl who claimed to be part-Ukrainian...turns out her dad, supposedly Ukrainian, was hiding a WWII real identity as an escaped war criminal. Forian saying his dad was part-Ukrainian now really makes me wonder if the same applies in Forian's dad's case.
- George Hall (Australia)
You guys are fun. Believe it or not, the Polish side of my family brought my father's family from Ukraine to Canada pre-WWII. I wouldn't be here today if it weren't for my Polish great-grandfather :-)
