If you want old Japan - Tokyo will not have it, US bombed it away in WWII. I was there in 2005 and saw Kobe, Osaka and Nara and the Himeji castle - well worth seeing the non-bombed areas that have the ancient buildings. Also stayed in a bed and breakfast with rice paper walls, building was 600 years old and a bamboo forest on the grounds :)
- Janet
i would like to visit tokyo as well someday.
- (jeff)isageek
Josh, totally. Though I still have Last.fm (no comments or likes) hidden. Might have to change that up.
- Steve Isaacs
I love watching the songs trickle down my feed. I don't even have to click on any of them, because the music instantly starts in my head. I end up typing lyrics to the ones I know, which doesn't make any sense, yet I feel compelled. *sigh* Music owns me.
- Josh Haley
Some folks do go a bit nuts on the likes on last.fm, but the FF post is usually very brief. Helps remind me of music I'd like to hear again from time to time. So, mine are not hidden.
- Kenley Neufeld
me three or 10...Though I do not utilize it as well and I should.
- Anna Lynn M.
when i started using it back in march, i hated it and ran back to pandora's arms. now, when i'm working i much prefer last.fm, but still for new music/artists, pandora's got that on lockdown.
- Anika
What I can't figure out is those with private feeds who subscribe to you and then won't let you subscribe to their feed. What's that about?
-
I don't understand it, either. I used to wonder the same thing about twitter until someone told me they made their feed private because of their employer. Maybe that's why some people do it on FF, too.
- Trish R
Some people only want to listen/read about what others are saying and/or aggregate for their own private archive.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I would guess that they plan to use FF only to communicate with family and IRL friends, much as some people use twitter or Facebook or Myspace. I don't see anything wrong with that, it's just not what I use FF for.
- Laura Norvig
I guess that makes sense. They can still have two-way communication w/o sharing their own feed.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach of FF
Makes sense Laura. Didn't think of that because none of my real life friends is very tech savvy or interested in social networking.
-
It's like the safety on a gun, those with private feeds just have their safety on most of the time. Watch out when they come gunnin' for ya though.
- Pete Delucchi
I had a private feed for alittle while but that was cause I was trying to get rid of some one from viewing my feed. They are gone now so I reopened my feed about a month ago.
- Colide81 (James)
you def wouldn't get the whole experience...but i get how some folks are freaked out by the whole SNing thing...some need to be eased in...experience positive benefits first...i remember how scared i was when i first started blogging!
- Lauren P
I never cared much for Jazz my whole life until this year. Now I usually have the Pandora Miles Davis station on while working. Very nice think music.
- Steve Isaacs
I really like Bill Evans - Live at the Village Vanguard for working/studying. It's jazz.
- Aaron Hood
what exactly about music are you studying? accidentals? Chords? harmony?
- Maria
thanks guys! i am from new orleans, so i love jazz! but i like all kinds of music...i just started a masters so i am reading and writing all of the time....so i guess i need music...that doesn't make me want to sing along and break focus...been listening to lot of radiohead, dylan, sigur ros here's my last.fm prof http://www.last.fm/user...
- Lauren P
Honestly, there's one place i'll never forget which made me feel calmer than I ever have before. It was on an empty beach in Boroqay in the Phillipines. My word, what a beautiful experience it was...

I haven't traveled much (yet), but I fell in love with California when I was there last summer.

Uninhabited island I spent a day hiking on in the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia, Argentina.

So far, the Brooks Range in Alaska...with my husband and dogs.

I don't know about favorite, but, I really loved the French Quarter in New Orleans. The other spot was Santa Rosa Beach (Pensacola), Florida, I think. The sand and water were so beautiful.
- Yolanda
Hard to pick a favorite, but Lugano, Switzerland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...) is on the short list. The whole place is Swiss tidy, but Italian laid-back... and very beautiful. Hills and palm trees and lakes. It's like the Artist's Conception in the marketing brochure for Planet Earth. Or possibly some other planet -- I think that part of the world is where George Lucas shot footage of the "lake country" on the planet Naboo.

Shoal Bay East, Anguilla. Right in front of Selma's restaurant.

Anywhere back home where my friends are. And Los Angeles, the Griffith Park observatory in particular.

Mona - Are you just pulling the iPhone Twitter location? Is that an IP? BTW - I LOVE all the responses. Interesting to note that there are VERY few repeat answers... a few New Orleans votes, tho.. :)
- Steve Isaacs
anywhere with you! but particularly anywhere on the mediterranean or in waianapanapa, or in a field of sunflowers in france, on the amalfi coast, or montreal ;), or in a piazza in poland, or just somewhere like on a boat in the middle of the florida straits.
- Melissa Maskevich
In my limited travels I have yet to find my favorite place on earth. I have been to Negril Jamaica and it is nice. Btw an IP to Geo conversion tells us Mona's is San Francisco.
- Mark Krynsky
Italy...anywhere close to the insanely gorgeous coastlines. On our side of the world, Twin Peaks in San Fran on a clear night, and the unbelievably green forests in Eastern Oregon, I've never felt more in love with nature than when I was in those forests...
- Amber Horner
I don't get like.fm/last.fm. I just want it to take a song and start playing stuff based on that. I don't want to create a library or choose stuff to listen to. So I play with it for 5 minutes and then switch back to Pandora and think "much better."
One hand hand, if I need to hear a particular song, that's a good place. On the other, you heard that song and then it stops. Not so great. So, I end up going back to Pandora as well.
- Yolanda
I use last.fm more for its database component. I like having data of my listening habits out in the cloud that I can pull down, remix and trend. I find it fascinating.
- Brooks Bishop
I've not used Like.fm, but when I play Last.fm I know it's going to play music I like. When Pandora WAS available here in the UK, it would play a couple of song I liked, then go off on some strange tangent of music I had never heard of. I always felt it's catalogue was extremely small and US-centric.
- Chris Nixon
Chris- as far as I can tell like.fm and last.fm are the same thing, just different pointers to the same site.
- Alex Scoble
The two are fundementaly different in that regard: Last.fm recommends based on what is in your library, eg what you've played already, whereas Pandora is all about a simple seed and it then does all work. BUT... guess what? Last.fm can do that too. http://www.last.fm/home type in an artist, genre/tag, or username and get all sorts of options for it play stuff for you without any work at all.
- Michael W. May
Alex, you need to pay the $3 and download their software. As a subscriber you get to create your own personalized streaming radio stations just like Pandora, or you can listen to your friends Radio streams based on the songs they listen to. But if you're not a paid subscriber it doesn't function much more than a database with snippets of the music you and your friends are listening to. This is probably why they're not in the same boat with the RIAA as Pandora.
- Adam Turetzky
Question is how does the software do the streaming? If it streams using anything other than HTTP over port 80 then I can't use it at work. The site at least is doing that, but not sure about the software.
- Alex Scoble
I agree. I have tried it multiple times, but find last.fm cryptic and annoying. Haven't tried since the recent redesign, but I do love Pandora.
- Steve Isaacs
I've been playing around with blip.fm - http://blip.fm/nicefishfilms you can create a playlist and let it stream through the songs you've put in there. Like it so far.
- michael sean wright
last.fm's algorithm works way better for my taste...you don't have to make playlists or choose to stuff to listen to...all you have to do is enter a song, and it will create a station for you based on that song..of course, the more you use features, the stronger your musical profile becomes --> thus the music it feeds is more likely to suit. i agree that the interface can be annoying. the recent redesign is a pretty big improvement!
- Lauren P
Those are so different it depends on your mood. Only you can choose. For me, Americanos if I am in a hurry and don't have time to steam milk. I've never bought one from Starbucks
- Mattb4rd
What’s up with Oreo Cookies? Is it their chocolate wafer that doesn’t even taste like chocolate? Is it their vanilla filling that just tastes like sugar? I don’t know, but what I know is that when you eat an oreo cookie they taste like… well, they taste like Oreo… I think what’s up with them is that they’ve created the a new flavour: the oreo flavour! And let’s face it, oreo flavour tastes good!

If John McCain is elected in November, I'm moving to Canada, and I plan on sleeping on Susan Sarandon's couch while Tim Robbins, Alec Baldwin and I start a punk band.
I doubt McCain can win either. And when Obama wins, I won't whine or make false promises to move out of the country, even though he's a slightly worse choice than McCain.

from fftogo
The Canada move has crossed my mind a number of times over the past few years. Seriously. Nova Scotia is nice and not too far away (I'm in NH). And Canadians don't seem to make a habit out of invading other countries. *shrugs*
- Joanmarie
Well if Barack Obama is elected I'm moving to Canada.
- Jim Williams
Jim, please let us know where we can forward your mail. :)
- R. Ferguson
To those who think McCain will lose no he won't we just must mobilize and explain how wrong Obama would be.
- Cecil Sandus
Looks like we get new citizens no matter who wins in November. Don't forget, mortgages are not tax deductible here -- but lottery winnings are tax free. Sweet deal eh?
- David Muir
McCain will win after everyone figures out that Obama is a socialist.
- Barbara Davis
I don't really want Obama or McCain to win, so where does that leave me? But I think it will be interesting to see who Obama really is and we won't know that until/if he gets elected. He's kind of like a chameleon.
-
i dont care who wins, as long as we get full frontal nudity at some point.
- Red Lantern Satan-Rage!
if John McCain wins, you can all move in with me!
- Lauren P
Canada really rocks. I love living here. Toronto is sweet since your into big cities.
- Keke
I would never move to Canada. I heard the toilets flush the opposite way, that would just freak me out. Also, their houses have no doors. It's true.
- Pete Delucchi
I'm all aboot Canada. Soory if you don't appreciate it, eh?
