Personally, I buy all my digital music from Amazon, which is cheaper, seems to have a better selection, and has no DRM. I'm guessing, however, that the average user, and even some of you tech aficianados, don't care about the iTunes DRM. So where do you buy your music, and why? Oh, and if you Torrent it all, feel free to add that in as well.
- Cyndy
Not anymore since the RIAA is going to stop suing individuals. Artists now monetize in ways aside from albums anyway. Oh. I think I just admitted to being a pirate. Argh.
- Mona Nomura
I buy iTunes Plus (non-DRM) if it's available (easiest integration with iTunes app), otherwise I'll check Amazon, Amie Street, etc.
- Tinfoil 2.0
I refuse to acknowledge the existence of anything infected by drm. It's why I wouldn't buy spore earlier this year even though I longed to play it.
- alphaxion
When I purchase, I buy directly from the artist (Myspace music is awesome for that - though they're moving into DRM too. wtf)
- Mona Nomura
Yes. I prefer Amazon MP3 or Amie Street to iTunes Plus. I've been annoyed having to burn and re-rip all my iTunes music often enough that I'd rather just start somewhere else first.
- Jandy
I switched to Amazon because of the DRM on iTunes. Got tired of Apple being all up in my face anytime I wanted to move around music that I purchased. I'm one of those suckers who buys Coach handbags. If i had to suddenly start notifying Coach of when I give one of my old bags to someone else or I decided to change the contents of my purse, I wouldn't be buying the damn things anymore.
- Yolanda
I won't buy any more music from iTunes, since I currently can only plan non-iTunes music on most of my macs. Yet my ipod and my laptop work fine.
- Shawn Thompson
I buy from Amazon because of the itunes DRM.
- Steve Olson
Don't know what DRM is, honestly. But I buy from iTunes.
- Just Katie
I don't buy that much music these days... I like to browse on iTunes, but if I do buy it's been from Amazon.
- David Wynn
from fftogo
Absolutely. If I can help it refuse to put a single cent into any digital file that is DRM-infected/crippled. Although I very much longed to, I never bought a song online until the DRM-free Amazon MP3 store came out. Up until then I would buy and rip CDs, avoiding any with copy protection. I was also big into the live music trading scene, following bands that encouraged taping and exchanging shows.
- Tom Harrison
I do care, and it's why Amazon has gotten the bulk of my loot since I discovered it.
- Derrick
Katie: DRM is copy protection. It prevents playback on more than a certain amount of devices, stops you from making backup copies, prevents playback on unapproved devices, etc...
- Tom Harrison
Thanks guys! Yolanda, can I quote you? I love that bit about Coach.
- Cyndy
@Tom: Thank you. Never knew about it. I'm not quite hip with the times :o)
- Just Katie
I stopped using iTunes because of it. I buy primarily Amazon(cdnow) because I want to use it on different mediums, such as SD cards.
- clarke thomas
I don't *care* about it because it's very easy for me to just not buy anything from that store as long as it's using it. Plus Amazon's mp3 store rocks.
- Eric P
I haven't been restricted by it yet, but I would much prefer it if they switched there whole selection over to iTunes + i would be much happier.
- Aaron Hood
Yes, I refuse to buy any music from anywhere that is restricted by DRM. I have yet to buy anything from iTunes. I have been an eMusic member for almost 9 years and have been enjoying 1000's of DRM free, high VBR mp3 files I have acquired from them.
- Jeff P. Henderson
No, as I don't use iTunes... But neither would I get anything that had DRM. Oh, and I use Ubuntu Linux.
- Grant Bierman
Yep. It's one of the reasons I bailed on iTunes and switched to other outlets for music.
- Steven Perez
I'm buying from lala everything I can or Amazon failing that. I won't buy music with DRM ever.
- Devon Campbell
I use iTunes. I buy, extensively, from the iTunes Store. I don't care about DRM. I can count on one hand the number of times its DRM has even remotely affected my playing habits (usually meant just reseting my authorized computer list). DRM is a tempest in a teapot issue.
- Mark Trapp
I won't touch iTunes music -- every time I have gotten a new iPod or changed computers, the only problems I had were with iTunes DRMed tracks.. I buy all my stuff from Amazon and eMusic. if the only way I can get it is DRMed, I'll look to 'other ways'....
- RudĩϐЯaЯïan
Jason, I disagree. All-Mac house here. My kids have iPods, but I don't let them have their own iTunes accounts, which means my laptop is an automatic authorization, as is my iPhone. I also have my husband authorized so we can share music, so that's three off the bat, and I have four kids with Nanos or Shuffles. Who wants to pick the two kids who CAN'T listen to High School Musical 25?
- Cyndy
DRM chaps my hide for a number of reasons, possibly unique to my situation: I teach/ study music. It's common for me to pull purchased music into other software to (for example) slow the tempo or change it's pitch. Additionally, students often show-up to lesson s with iPods whose batteries may not be charged fully--no problem--I hook them to my MacBook--their library displays in my iTunes where it CANNOT be played. Yes--the iPod works now that it's plugged-in--but it just seem an unnecessary inconvenience.
- Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Don't by music online, I buy the CD and rip it to flac for the Squeezebox and then AAC for my ipod. Perhaps if I could buy lossless online I would.
- Andy Davies
I purchased one song from iTunes because it was the only place I could get it at the time. I was so pissed with my experience of having acquired a DRM-infected file that I had to jump through hoops to get into MP3 format without the DRM, I never went back. It's either Amazon Download or I buy the CDs themselves.
- Hookuh Tinypants
Thanks for the help, all! It reinforced what I thought. :) Amanda, LOL at "DRM-infected."
- Cyndy
Yes. I don't buy DRM-infected music.
